I was waiting in a check-in line at Arlanda International Airport. The man ahead of me was quite a big guy. As an airport baggage handler checked through a customer at the roadside, he accidentally knocked over the man’s luggage. He quickly collected the fallen bags and apologized for his mistake. However, the traveler burst into anger, shouting at the baggage handler for his carelessness.
The baggage handler calmly apologized and smiled all the time. The customer continued to berate(痛斥) the man, even as he turned away and headed for his gate. Through it all the baggage handler smiled and remained calm.
The other customers in line witnessed the incident and admired the baggage handler’s professionalism and self-control. “I have never seen such restraint and humility,” one of the customers sighed, “How do you keep your cool when somebody is attacking you so viciously?”
“It’s easy,” the baggage handler answered. “He’s going to London, but his bags are going to Tokyo.”
I won’t recommend that we use revenge to relieve stress. But let me tell you about one of my friends who has found a way to go through most of his life unaffected by theturbulence that disturbs most people. He is one of the calmest people I’ve ever known and he describes how he keeps his cool no matter how turbulent a situation becomes. He says, “I look at it this way. A traffic jam has no power to make me angry. It just stops my car. And that’s the way I try to look at most of what happens to me.” With that philosophy, this guy goes through life with a calmness I can only envy.
My friend likes to say things like, “A rude customer has no power to make me angry; he just fusses.” And, “A mistake I made has no power to make me upset; it’s just a chance to do better.” He shows how we can truly find calmness in the midst of chaos.

C
High-speed Internet access is provided by fiber-optic cables In fiber-optic systems, light signals are carried over long distances with fibers covered by cables. They have excellent performance, but they also have their own problems. Many parts of the world — especially underdeveloped areas — are not able to afford to build fiber-optic networks. This prevents millions of people across the world from having access to the Internet.
A new system being tested in India and Africa offers a partial solution to this problem. It was developed by Alphabet. Like fiber optics, the system uses light to carry high-speed Internet signals. But the light travels as beams (光束) through the air, without the need for fibers or cables. The beams can transmit (传输) high-speed data between two points with the help of receiving devices attached to structures. The technology is called Free Space Optical Communications (FSOC).
The project is called Taara, using an FSOC system to transmit high-speed data signals between two large African cities — Brazzaville and Kinshasa. The two cities are only 4.8 kilometers apart from each other, separated by the Congo River. The transmission of data signals is possible as long as there is a direct line of sight between the system’s receiving devices.
The system can be affected by some kinds of weather, like heavy fog, or by birds or other animals getting close to the equipment. But the Taara team says it has already made progress in making the system adjust to such environments to avoid any service outages.
After improving its “pointing and tracking” equipment for beam connectivity, Taara said the link provided nearly 700 million bytes (字节) of data in 20 days with 99.9 percent availability. It noted that that amount of data would be equal to that of watching a FIFA World Cup match 270,000 times. Baris Erkmen, the director of engineering for Taara, has reported similar results in tests of the system in India. He said it couldn’t expect to see “perfect reliability” in the system through all kinds of weather and conditions. However, he added, “We believe Taara’s links will continue to deliver similar performance and will play a key role in bringing faster, more affordable connectivity to people living in these cities.”
46. What can we say about fiber-optic systems?
A. Safe and adaptable. B. Complex but popular.
C. Demanding and reusable. D. Effective but expensive.
47. What’s the main difference between the fiber-optic system and the FSOC system?
A. Their signal quality. B. Their coverage area.
C. Their transmission speed. D. Their transmission method.
48. What does the underlined word “outages” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Promotion. B. Updating. C. Failure. D. Exposure.
49. Why does the author present data in the last paragraph?
A. To describe the competitive World Cup match.
B. To show the successful improvement of Taara.
C. To prove the convenience of beam connectivity.
D. To introduce the perfect reliability of the system.
50. What is Baris Erkmen’s attitude towards Taara?
A. Positive. B. Cautious. C. Doubtful. D. Concerned.
D 47. D 48. C 49. B 50. A
根据第一段中“In fiber-optic systems, light signals are carried over long distances with fibers covered by cables. They have excellent performance, but they also have their own problems. Many parts of the world — especially underdeveloped areas — are not able to afford to build fiber-optic networks. (在光纤系统中,光信号通过电缆覆盖的光纤进行长距离传输。它们有优秀的表现,但它们也有自己的问题。世界上许多地方——尤其是欠发达地区——没有能力建设光纤网络)”可推知,光纤系统有效但昂贵。故选D。
【47题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段的“In fiber-optic systems, light signals are carried over long distances with fibers covered by cables. (在光纤系统中,光信号通过电缆覆盖的光纤进行长距离传输)”和第二段中“But the light travels as beams (光束) through the air, without the need for fibers or cables. The beams can transmit (传输) high-speed data between two points with the help of receiving devices attached to structures. (但是光以光束的形式在空气中传播,不需要光纤或电缆。在连接在结构上的接收装置的帮助下,这些光束可以在两点之间传输高速数据)”可知,光纤系统和FSOC系统通过不同的方式传播,因此,它们的主要区别是传播介质。故选D。
【48题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“The system can be affected by some kinds of weather, like heavy fog, or by birds or other animals getting close to the equipment. But the Taara team says it has already made progress in making the system adjust to such environments to avoid (该系统可能会受到某些天气的影响,比如大雾,或者鸟类或其他动物接近设备。但Taara团队表示,他们已经在使系统适应这种环境以避免)”可知,他们已经在使系统适应这种环境以避免任何服务中断方面取得了进展,故可猜测outages的意思是“失败,中断”,与选项C.“Failure(失败,中断)”意思一致。故选C。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“After improving its “pointing and tracking” equipment for beam connectivity, Taara said the link provided nearly 700 million bytes (字节) of data in 20 days with 99.9 percent availability. It noted that that amount of data would be equal to that of watching a FIFA World Cup match 270,000 times. Baris Erkmen, the director of engineering for Taara, has reported similar results in tests of the system in India. (Taara表示,在改善了“指向和跟踪”设备后,该链路在20天内提供了近700tb的数据,可用性为99.9%。它指出,这一数据量相当于观看27万次国际足联世界杯比赛的数据量。Taara的工程总监Baris Erkmen报告了该系统在印度测试的类似结果)”可推知,作者在最后一段展示数据是为了展示Taara成功的改进。故选B。
【50题详解】
推理判断题。由文章最后一段中“However, he added, “We believe Taara’s links will continue to deliver similar performance and will play a key role in bringing faster, more affordable connectivity to people living in these cities.” (然而,他补充道,“我们相信Taara的连接将继续提供类似的性能,并将在为生活在这些城市的人们带来更快、更实惠的连接方面发挥关键作用。”)”可知,Baris Erkmen对Taara持积极态度。故选A。
D
Are you one of those people who can tell when a storm is approaching based on the achy knees? Well, you may think you are. But a study of more than 1.5 million seniors finds no relationship between rainfall and doctor visits for pain. The idea that our bodies are barometers (气压计) for all sorts of weather-related phenomena is not a new one.
Anupam Jena, who led the study said, “If you talk to people, I’d say millions and millions of people probably believe that things like rainfall cause symptoms (症状) of joint pain and stiffness (僵硬). But if you look at the studies, there’s actually been surprisingly little evidence to suggest that joint pain has something to do with rainfall.”
Most of the studies have been quite small. And we were interested in thinking about whether we could approach this question in a big data sort of way. He and his colleagues looked at information collected in more than 11 million visits that older Americans made to their primary care physicians. They compared these records with data on daily rainfall. And what they found is if you look at days when it rained compared with days when it didn’t rain, there is no difference in the proportion (比例) of visits to a doctor that involved a complaint of joint pain or back pain. They saw no “rain effect” even when it poured for seven days straight.
And if you look at the week after a period of heavy rainfall, you still see no relationship. And that doesn’t mean that factors like rainfall or temperature don’t affect joint pain or symptoms of joint stiffness. But in this sort of big data approach, they didn’t find any evidence for it. Of course, it could still be that the pain from rain is not enough to complain. It could be that patients take over-the-counter (不需处方可出售的) painkillers once these symptoms hit, and so when they see their doctor they’re not actually in enough pain to mention it.
51. What do Anupam Jena’s words indicate?
A. Seeing is believing.
B. Truth is in the hands of a few.
C. Belief and truth may be two different things.
D. We should be prepared for a rainy day.
52. How did Anupam Jena carry out his research?
A. By analyzing the “big data” on the Internet.
B. By surveying “rain effect” online.
C. By visiting their primary care physicians.
D. By comparing doctor visits with daily rainfall data.
53. What did Anupam Jena and his colleagues find?
A. Weather can stop people who suffer joint pain from visiting doctors.
B. People go to hospital more frequently on rainy days than on sunny days.
C. It’s hard for patients to make an appointment with doctors on rainy days.
D. There is no evidence in big data to show rainfall has a relationship with joint pain.
54. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Painkillers are not allowed to be used when the pain is not serious.
B. Patients may take painkillers first when they suffer joint pain.
C. Weather-related phenomena have a strong influence on people.
D. Painkillers make patients tell a lie when they see their doctors.
55. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Pain and weather fail to connect.
B. Some people can predict rainfall.
C. The achy knees predict the coming storm.
D. The relationship between pain and rainfall is clear.
C 52. D 53. D 54. B 55. A
根据第二段“Anupam Jena, who led the study said, “If you talk to people, I’d say millions and millions of people probably believe that things like rainfall cause symptoms (症状) of joint pain and stiffness (僵硬). But if you look at the studies, there’s actually been surprisingly little evidence to suggest that joint pain has something to do with rainfall.” (该研究的负责人Anupam Jena说:“如果你和人们交谈,我会说数以百万计的人可能认为降雨会导致关节疼痛和僵硬的症状。但如果你看看这些研究,实际上几乎没有证据表明关节疼痛与降雨有关。”)”可知,Anupam Jena的话表明信念和事实可能是两回事。故选C项。
【52题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“He and his colleagues looked at information collected in more than 11 million visits that older Americans made to their primary care physicians. They compared these records with data on daily rainfall. (他和他的同事们查看了美国老年人在初级保健医生处就诊超过1100万次的信息。他们将这些记录与每日降雨数据进行了比较)”可知,Anupam Jena是通过将看医生的记录与每日降雨数据对比来开展研究的。故选D项。
【53题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“And what they found is if you look at days when it rained compared with days when it didn’t rain, there is no difference in the proportion (比例) of visits to a doctor that involved a complaint of joint pain or back pain. (他们发现,与不下雨的日子相比,在下雨的日子里,因关节疼痛或背痛而看医生的比例没有差异)”可知,Anupam Jena和他的同事发现大数据中没有证据表明降雨与关节疼痛有关。故选D项。
【54题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Of course, it could still be that the pain from rain is not enough to complain. It could be that patients take over-the-counter (不需处方可出售的) painkillers once these symptoms hit, and so when they see their doctor they’re not actually in enough pain to mention it. (当然,也有可能是雨天的疼痛不足以让人抱怨,也有可能是患者一旦出现这些症状就会服用非处方止痛药,所以当他们去看医生时,他们实际上并没有痛到要提到这一点)”可知,患者在关节疼痛时可能会先服用止痛药。故选B项。
【55题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“But a study of more than 1.5 million seniors finds no relationship between rainfall and doctor visits for pain. (但一项对 150 多万老年人的研究发现,降雨和因疼痛就医之间没有关系)”、第二段“there’s actually been surprisingly little evidence to suggest that joint pain has something to do with rainfall (实际上几乎没有证据表明关节疼痛与降雨有关)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了关节疼痛和降雨之间并没有联系。故选A项。
Saving money is easy when you don’t have anything else to spend it on, but what should we do when things pop up that demand some of your hard-earned cash? These are called expenses.
Chances are that most of your basic living expenses — food, shelter, clothing, medical care — are covered by your family. But perhaps you and your family have agreed that you’ll pay for certain other expenses out of your own money, such as cell phone minutes, after-school snacks, clothing and small jewelry, or club dues.
Expenses that happen regularly, like every week or month, are called “fixed” expenses. The good news is that you know when these expenses are coming, and you can plan for them. But life is full of surprises, and sometimes these surprises turn into expenses, too. You might have an emergency like fixing a flat tire on your bike, or just something unusual like the class trip. These are called “unexpected” expenses — and if you’re smart with your money, you’ll plan for these as well.
Here’s a secret when it comes to saving money: if you think of it as a regular expense, it’ll be easier to put a certain amount aside. Tell yourself that the $20.00 you’re trying to save up every month is something you absolutely must do, and there’s no getting around it.
Can you think of any unexpected expenses that you had in the past or you might have in the near future? In this case, you should track your cash flow by creating a cash flow journal in a notebook. That means you keep a record of every amount you earn, spend, and save. Thus we can have a clear idea about our earnings, expenses and savings. And then we can enjoy a sound sleep without any worry.
56. What does the underlined phrase “pop up” in the first paragraph mean in English? (no more than 5 words)
________________________________________________________________________________________
57. How many types does the writer divide expenses into? What are they? (no more than 10 words)
________________________________________________________________________________________
58. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about? (no more than 8 words)
________________________________________________________________________________________
59. For what purpose do we create a cash flow journal? (no more than 12 words)
________________________________________________________________________________________
60. What is your own way to solve the problem with unexpected expenses? (no more than 20 words)
________________________________________________________________________________________
56. Appear suddenly/Occur suddenly/Happen suddenly.
57. Two. Fixed expenses and unexpected expenses.
58. A secret to save money./How to save money.
59. To know clearly about our earnings, expenses and savings.
60. To solve the problem with unexpected expenses I always try to set aside a fixed amount of money.
根据文章第一段“Saving money is easy when you don’t have anything else to spend it on, but what should we do when things pop up that demand some of your hard-earned cash? These are called expenses.(当你没有其他东西可以花的时候,省钱很容易,但当需要你辛苦赚来的钱的事情pop up时,我们该怎么办?这些被称为费用)”可知此处的需要花我们血汗钱的事情是一些没有预料到的事情,即突然出现的事情,所以划线词pop up的意思是Appear suddenly/Occur suddenly/Happen suddenly,故答案为Appear suddenly/Occur suddenly/Happen suddenly.
根据文章第三段“Expenses that happen regularly, like every week or month, are called “fixed” expenses. (每周或每月定期发生的费用称为“固定”费用)”以及“You might have an emergency like fixing a flat tire on your bike, or just something unusual like the class trip. These are called “unexpected” expenses — and if you’re smart with your money, you’ll plan for these as well.(你可能会遇到紧急情况,比如修理自行车爆胎,或者只是一些不寻常的事情,比如课堂旅行。这些被称为“意外”开支——如果你对钱很精明,你也会为这些开支做好计划)”可知作者将费用分成了两类,即固定费用和意外费用。故答案为Two. Fixed expenses and unexpected expenses.
根据文章第四段“Here’s a secret when it comes to saving money: if you think of it as a regular expense, it’ll be easier to put a certain amount aside.(说到省钱,这里有一个秘密:如果你把它看作是一笔常规费用,那么节省一定数额会更容易。)” A secret to save money./How to save money.
根据文章最后一段“That means you keep a record of every amount you earn, spend, and save. Thus we can have a clear idea about our earnings, expenses and savings. And then we can enjoy a sound sleep without any worry.(这意味着你要记录你赚的、花的、存的每一笔钱。因此,我们可以有一个清晰的概念,我们的收入,支出和储蓄。然后我们可以享受一个没有任何担心的好睡眠。)”可知创建一个现金日记账的目的是为了我们可以对自己的收入、开支和储蓄有一个清晰的概念,故答案为To know clearly about our earnings, expenses and savings.
To solve the problem with unexpected expenses I always try to set aside a fixed amount of money.

41. The airport baggage handler remained calm during the customer’s berating because ______.
A. he was good at self-control
B. he wanted to show his professionalism
C. he wanted to revenge the customer
D. he knew well the airport rules
42. What is the author’s attitude towards the baggage handler?
A Appreciative. B. Disapproving.
C. Concerned. D. Sympathetic.
43. Why does the author tell us about his friend?
A. To tell us what is true calmness.
B. To explain a special philosophy.
C. To show his envy to the friend.
D. To advise us to have good manners.
44. What does the underlined word “turbulence” mean?
A. an uneasy or a disturbing state of mind
B. a confusing or uncontrolled situation
C. a person that makes people angry
D. violence that hurts people
45. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?
A. A Clever Baggage Handler
B. Restraint and Humility in Life
C. A Philosophy for Everyone
D. Calmness in Chaos

After improving its “pointing and tracking” equipment for beam connectivity Taara said the link provided nearly 700 million bytes (字节) of data in 20 days with 99.9 percent availability.
A. Positive. B. Cautious. C. Doubtful. D. Concerned.
