Have you ever wondered if your generation is truly prepared to deal with big problems
like climate change and pollution? The Programme for International Student Assessment
(PISA),a major global education study, asked this exact question in a report titled "Are
Students Ready to Take on Environmental Challenges?"Its findings are both encouraging and
a call to action for students like you.
The survey showed a powerful and hopeful finding:nearly 90%of students worldwide are
2025-2026学年度第一学期阶段性学习反馈初三英语第4页
aware of environmental problems and feel anxious about them.More importantly, most of
them believe their actions can make a difference. This feeling-that you can change things-is
called agency(能s动意识),and it is a crucial first step. However, the report also uncovered a
problem. While students are aware and concerned, many lack the specific scientific knowledge
and practical skills needed to fully understand these problems or come up with good solutions.
For example, knowing climate change is bad is different from understanding what causes
it or how we can realistically solve it.
This gap matters because today's environmental problems are interconnected. They are
not single problems, but a network of causes and effects.Solving them requires more than
good wishes; It requires systemic thinking. This means seeing how a choice like buying a
cheap plastic product links to factory pollution, ocean pollution, and harm to wildlife.PISA
suggests that the students most ready to take on these challenges are those who combine (
science with critical thinking. They can tell facts from misinformation, weigh the economic
benefits against the social impact, and offer actions that address root causes, not just surface
problems.
So,what does this mean for you?The message is not that you are unprepared, but that
your education needs to go beyond textbooks. It must connect classroom learning to real-world
problem-solving.Are you discussing environmental issues in your science, geography, and
even economics classes? Are you learning how to research and design projects that can help
your own community? The PISA report argues that readiness comes from combining
knowledge with action.Your generation's worry is the fuel, but building the skills to handle
tough problems is the engine. The future depends on turning your awareness into smart and
effective action.
27.What can we learn from the PISA report?
A.Students have enough knowledge to fully understand environmental problems.
B.Most of the students realize the environmental problems and want to solve them.
C.Most of the students don't believe they can make a change to the environment.
D.Schools have prepared students well to fix real-world environmental challenges.
28.The underline word"address"in Paragrapin 3 probably means
A.to find out
B.to better understand
C.to deal with
D.to give a speech on
29.What is the best title of this passage?
A.Science Education:Why It Is Important for Saving the Planet
B.Environmental Problems:A Network of Causes and Effects
C.The PISA Report:Students Are Ready to Take Environmental Challenges
D.Awareness to Action:What Students Need to Fix Environmental Problems
D
Humans have been practicing over millions of years to respond to certain situations
without thinking too hard.If your ancestors (saw movement in the wild forest, they
would run first and ask questions later. At the same time, the ability to analyse (and to
2025-2026学年度第一学期阶段性学习反馈初三英语第5页
plan is a main difference between people and other animals. The question of when to trust your
instinct (and when to rely on careful analysis-whether to think fast or slow,in the
language of Daniel Kahneman,a psychologist-matters in the office as much as it does in the
flat grassland.
Careful thinking is the feature of a well-run workplace.Long-term planning and budget
discussions are built on rounds of meetings, calculations (and presentations. Many work
processes are increasingly designed to reduce instinctive responses. From hiding names when
choosing workers to closely examining company plans, careful thinking beats instinct.
Yet instinct also has its place. Some decisions are more about emotional responses and
naturally harder to analyse. For example, does a marketing activity really show what your
company is about, say,or would this person work well with other people in a team?In tricky
customer-service situations, instinct is often a better guide to how to behave than a fixed set of
rules.
Instincts can also be improved.Plenty of research has shown that the more experience
people have, the better their instinct becomes. In one well-known experiment in 2012,
volunteers were asked to decide whether some designer handbags were counterfeit or
real. Some were instructed to use their instinct and others to think carefully.Instinct worked
better for those who owned at least three designer handbags;indeed,it outperformed analysis.
The more expert you become, the better your instincts tend to be.
However, the real reason to use fast thinking is that it is,well, fast.Instinctive
decision-making is often the only way to get through the day.Researchers at Cornell
University once found that people make over 200 decisions a day about food alone. The
workplace is nothing but a series of choices,a few big and many small:what to do first, when
to step in,whom to avoid in the lifts and, now, where to work each day.
When to use instinct in the workplace rests on different situations.Does the
decision-maker have real experience in this area?Is this a field in which emotion matters more
than reasoning?Above all,is it worth putting off the decision?Slow thinking is needed to get
the big calls right. But fast thinking is the way to stop careful planning turning to hesitation.
30.Which of the following is an example of using instinct?
A.A manager is carefully checking job applications without seeing names.
B.A teacher notices students'bad emotion in class and decides to comfort them first.
C.A driver chooses the best route by checking real-time traffic data instead of memory.
D.A graduate chooses which university he should go to after discussing with his parents.
31.The experiment in Paragraph 4 wants to tell us
A.Instinct works better with more practical experience.
B.Being an expert is necessary to make right decisions.
C.Careful thinking and analysis brings better performance.
D.Instinct is a born ability and it differs from person to person.
32.Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?
A.Thinking fast results in mistakes and rushed conclusions.
B.Using careful thinking can lead to a smooth and safe day.
2025-2026学年度第一学期阶段性学习反馈初三英语第6页
C.Trusting instinct keeps you from overthinking and being indecisive.
D.Instinct beats detailed analysis both in the office and on the grassland.
33.What is the writer's main purpose in writing the passage?
A.To show the development of different ways of thinking.
B.To explain how people make decisions in their daily life.
C.To compare the importance of instinct and careful thinking.
D.To discuss when people should trust instinct in workplaces
第二部分
本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。
四、阅读表达(34-36题,每题2分;37题4分。共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Be Smart About Your Smartphone
Losing your phone is a bad thing, unless you're careless and break it yourself.Well,I did
just that when I got into a taxi and shut the door hard.I heard a loud crack. The crack was the
sound of my phone's screen breaking. The phone had been in the pocket of my jacket and my
jacket had been caught in the taxi's door.
Apart from the sound ot preaking glass, the other sound I heard was my,own voice saying,
"Oh,no!What have I done?"But I felt relaxed when I lived without a phone.The death of my
phone was less of a tragedy(悲剧)than a comedy(喜剧),because it was my carelessness that
had killed it.
So until I was able to buy a new one tus:next day,I had to live with no phone:no calls,no
texts,no social media.And I discovered that I really didn't miss any of these phone-dependent
services. For that whole day,I was able to stop living in a"virtual"world and start living in the
real”world
Smartphones have changed our lives, because they make it easy to communicate, get
information and have fun.All of these things are good, but too much of these things can also be
bad. There is a chemical i your brain called dopamine ()Activities like looking at
videos or posts cause your brain to let it out.It gives you pleasure. For many people, these
feelings of"pleasure"will increasingly wash over them the more they use their smartphones.
This explains why you may feel upset when you can't use yours. You have,in fact, become
addicted (E)to dopamine. In order to treat this increasingly common addiction, some
places are experimenting with the idea of a“digital detox”(数字戒).In Vadgaon,India, for
example, people are being forced to turn off their phones and TVs from 7:00 to 8:30 every
night.
Smartphones are great, but you should be smart about using them.Put them away in your
pocket for a while and enjoy the real world...but you should still be careful about getting into
taxis.
