High school is a time of great change and growth. For many students, it’s the first time they have to manage their own studies, make new friends, and balance different activities. Here are some practical tips to help you make the most of your high school years.
First, develop good study habits. Unlike middle school, high school courses are more challenging. It’s important to take notes in class, review them regularly, and finish homework on time. You can also create a study schedule to avoid cramming (临时抱佛脚) before exams.
Second, build meaningful relationships. High school is a great place to meet people with similar interests. Join clubs or sports teams that you like. Not only will you make friends, but you’ll also learn teamwork and leadership skills. Remember to be kind and respectful to others — friendships take time to grow.
Finally, take care of yourself. Getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, and exercising regularly are essential for your physical and mental health. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you make mistakes — high school is a learning process, and everyone grows at their own pace.
21. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to succeed in high school exams.
B. Tips for adapting to high school life.
C. The importance of making friends in high school.
D. Ways to improve physical health in high school.
22. According to the passage, what should students do to deal with challenging courses?
A. Cram before exams.
B. Skip difficult classes.
C. Develop good study habits.
D. Ask teachers for help every day.
23. What benefit can students get from joining clubs?
A. They can get better grades.
B. They can learn teamwork skills.
C. They can avoid making mistakes.
D. They can sleep better at night.

When Christina Zimmerman came back to work after having her baby, she struggled with depression. She almost intended to quit her job. But her school’s daycare, just a few rooms away, made all the difference. “I can be a teacher and a mom at the same time,” said Zimmerman, a fourth-grade teacher in Idaho. “Teaching is my dream, but I also want to be with my child. I didn’t want to choose.”
In states such as Idaho and Texas, many schools now provide affordable quality child care for teachers. This helps teachers stay in their jobs, especially women who often leave work to care for their children. It also helps schools keep more good teachers and gives young children a safe place to grow.
In Idaho, Principal Heather Yarbrough started an on-campus daycare at her school after remembering how hard it was to drop off her three-month-old daughter Grace with a caregiver at a faraway daycare center each day. Yarbrough said the feelings still haunt her, even 14 years later. She recalled that she cried every day for weeks, but couldn’t quit her job as a teacher. Today, many teachers at her school use the on-campus daycare, and it helps them stay in their jobs.
“This is a great strategy by which you can support both children, families and then the school’s workforce, and parties concerned welcome the idea,” said Molly Hillier, an instructional coach and mother of a child at the school.
In Texas, the Richardson school district runs two daycares that care for babies as young as six weeks old. Teachers only pay $350 per month, which is much less than regular daycares.
School-based child care not only helps teachers — it helps students, too. Happier teachers stay longer and build better relationships with kids. As one teacher said, “If teachers feel supported, they can give more to their students.”
24. Why did Zimmerman want to quit her teaching job?
A. She failed to get a pay raise. B. She had to take care of her baby.
C. She disliked teaching students. D. She lived far away from her school.
25. Which best explains the underlined word “haunt” in paragraph 3?
A. Cause repeated suffering. B. Bring peace of mind.
C. Show personal preference. D. Take up too much time.
26. What did Hillier say about the on-campus daycare?
A It mainly aims to benefit pupils. B. It enables her to work from home.
C. It is a well-received program. D. It is expensive for most families.
27. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Teachers’ Struggles in Balancing Work and Family
B. Daycare Centers Are Facing Unexpected Hardships
C. Mothers’ Love and Its Impact on Children’s Growth
D. School Daycare Helps Teachers Stay in the Classroom

When people think about surfing, they imagine a young person riding the waves standing on a surfboard. Another special form of surfing, which is easier on your knees, is bodyboarding where the surfer rides a specially designed bodyboard lying on the stomach. This sport is gaining popularity because of its appeal (吸引力) to people of all ages.
As people age, it’s common to lose confidence and develop a sharp sense of fear when beginning physical activities, especially those like surfing. Some surfing programs aim to fight these concerns by providing expert guidance and developing a sense of social connection while offering health benefits to seniors. But they’re about more than just exercise. There’s a social function that is particularly important to seniors. It’s really important to get older people in the water and get them active.
A group of women in Western Australia take to the surf every week. These women who are called Granny Grommets have been riding waves in Albany for 25 years. The group began when founder Kim Buttfield was teaching a mom and daughter to surf, and some older women approached her and curiously asked, “What about us?” Buttfield decided to teach these women bodyboarding because it is easier on aging knees than standing on a surfboard. She said that there are only two requirements for joining: a positive attitude and members that have to be at least 50 years old.
There are now more than 100 women in the group including Glenn Scott who became a member when she was 80. “All you need for a Granny Grommet is a bodyboard and a laugh across your face,” Scott said. Granny Grommets have inspired other senior surfing groups around Australia and even have gone global. There are groups in South Africa and even as far north as France. This shows that all you need is surf, a board, and determination to ride the waves at any age.
28. What makes bodyboarding special?
A. Its speed of surfing. B. Its competition rules.
C. The ages of the participants. D. The position on the skateboard.
29. What do the surfing programs mentioned in paragraph 2 aim to do?
A. Offer expert guidance to professional surfers.
B. Tell the youth about health benefits of surfing.
C. Help older people overcome fears and keep active.
D. Encourage social connections among young surfers.
30. What could we infer about the older women from the question “What about us?”?
A. They disliked surfing. B. They desired to learn surfing.
C. They were fearful of surfing. D. They were experienced in surfing.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Being a Popular Surfer
B. Getting the Elderly into the Surf
C. Joining in Women’s Surfing Programs
D. Pushing Seniors to Attend a Global Surfing Event
D
Before 2021, the typically cool Pacific Northwest and western Canada seemed highly unlikely to get a killer heat wave, but they did. Many in North Carolina figured that hurricanes were a coastal problem until Helene blew in last year. After the deadly flood in central Texas in 1987, some thought they could handle the worst flooding in the future. Then came this month’s terrible flash flood that killed more than 179 people.
Climate change is making extreme weather events more frequent and intense, according to climate data. But experts warn that people and governments are generally living in the past and haven’t accepted that extreme weather is becoming a new norm
“There’s plenty of evidence that we start to experience things that just basically never happened before,” Princeton University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer said" Unfortunately, when these risks are coming right at us like a fast-moving train, we just stand in the tracks. Then, all of a sudden, ‘Boom’”
“Time and again after catastrophic storms and wildfires, people whose lives were runed said they didn’t think they could happen to them again. It’s sort of a psychological mechanism (心理机制) to protect themselves from the terrible stress caused by those disasters But with extreme weather events happening more frequently and in more places, this mindset can prevent them from making proper preparations,” said Kim Klockow McClain, an extreme weather social scientist at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research who studies communicating disaster warnings and risk. “The message needs to be, ‘If you’ re used to some degree of flooding, look at what happened in Texas and realize that this is a shifting baseline.’”
As for future disasters, the country needs to figure out and plan for the worst case instead of looking to the past. It’s obvious that we’ re living into a future where what used to be extreme becomes average, typical, and what used to never occur in a human lifetime or maybe even in a thousand years becomes the new extreme.
32. What message does the author want to convey in the first two paragraphs?
A. It is very difficult to predict natural disasters. B. It is dangerous to take the new situation lightly.
C Cool areas are also affected by climate change. D. Extreme events used to occur more frequently
33. How does Michael Oppenheimer most probably feel about the current situation?
A. Satisfied. B. Regretful. C. Worried. D. Unconcerned.
34. How do the survivors react to similar future disasters, according to paragraph 4?
A. They usually appear to be too optimistic B. They are willing to seek professional advice.
C. They make great efforts to be ready for them. D. They tend to cooperate with the governments.
35. What does the author call on the governments and people to do?
A. Learn from the past B. Get prepared for the worst.
C. Move to safer places. D. Give in to the extreme climate.

Jane was a 10-year-old girl with messy brown hair. She lived with her hardworking mom, a nurse who often came home late. Jane tried to do everything by herself but always seemed to forget something. Her strict science teacher, Mr. Jeff, often got angry with her for being unprepared.
“Late again, Jane!” Mr. Jeff shouted loudly one Monday morning as Jane rushed into class, her shoes untied and books falling from her arms. “Where’s your homework? Still unfinished?”
Jane’s face turned red. “I... I did finish it this time,” she said quietly, searching her bag. Her heart dropped when she pulled out a messy math paper instead. The class laughed.
That night, Jane sat in her room, remembering how embarrassed (尴尬的) she felt “I’ll prove I can do better,” she promised herself. She stayed up late organizing her school things: notes and a homework report, Jane’s mom, coming home late from her nursing job, noticed the extra effort Jane was putting into her schoolwork. Mr. Jeff has been so strict, and I don’t want to disappoint (使失望) him again.” Her mom nodded, understanding the importance of Jane’s efforts. Finally, everything was ready. Jane set two alarms (闹铃).
Unluckily, the next morning the alarms didn’t ring, because Jane had set them wrongly. Her mom knocked on her door and said, “Jane! The school bus is coming soon!” In a hurry to eat breakfast, brush her teeth, and find her shoes, Jane completely forgot her schoolbag by the door.

【原文】M: Hi, I’m Rick Steves. If you’ve been with us from the beginning, you’ll know that we began our tour in Amsterdam, walked our way through Germany and Austria down into Italy. Back up through Switzerland and this week we’re in Paris. We won’t spend much time at the big attractions in a tourist destination like Paris. Even a new traveler knows to see the famous art museums of Paris, and no one misses the Eiffel Tower. But we’re going to some of the places the average tourist misses.
For instance, the best view in town may not be from the top of the Eiffel Tower, but from the top of the Montparnasse Tower. The view includes the Eiffel Tower as well as everything else. It’s cheaper and easier to get up. Here we can join a ride on a public bus. I like the views from line 63, or we can cruise through Paris in one of their river tour boats.
To cover more territory, traffic and streets for you, I ride the subway. Many European cities have subway systems. The one in Paris is really amazing. You can go anywhere in town for a reasonable price. And don’t worry, getting lost is cheap. In fact, you could stay underground all day long on one ticket about the cost of a cup of coffee.

A. It mainly aims to benefit pupils. B. It enables her to work from home.
C. It is a well-received program. D. It is expensive for most families.
27. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Teachers’ Struggles in Balancing Work and Family
B. Daycare Centers Are Facing Unexpected Hardships
C. Mothers’ Love and Its Impact on Children’s Growth
D. School Daycare Helps Teachers Stay in the Classroom
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. D

25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词后文“even 14 years later. She recalled that she cried every day for weeks, but couldn’t quit her job as a teacher.(甚至在 14 年之后。她回忆说,她连续几周每天都哭,但却不能辞去教师的工作)”可推断,这种感觉会导致反复的痛苦,即便14年后,这种感受仍让她困扰,故画线词与Cause repeated suffering的意思最接近,表示“导致反复的痛苦”。故选A。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段““This is a great strategy by which you can support both children, families and then the school’s workforce, and parties concerned welcome the idea,” said Molly Hillier, an instructional coach and mother of a child at the school.(“这是一个非常棒的策略,它能同时照顾到孩子们、家庭以及学校的教职工队伍,而且相关各方都对这一想法表示欢迎。”莫莉·希利尔说道。她是该校的一名教学指导员,同时还是该校一名学生的母亲)”可知,Hillier认为校内托儿服务深受各方欢迎。故选C。

Happier teachers stay longer and build better relationships with kids. As one teacher said, “If teachers feel supported, they can give more to their students. ”(校内儿童托管服务不仅对教师有益,对学生也有益。更快乐的教师会留任更久,并能与孩子们建立更良好的关系。正如一位教师所说:“如果教师感到受到支持,他们就能为学生付出更多。”)”及全文内容可知,文章通过Idaho和Texas的案例,讲述学校提供的托儿服务帮助教师平衡工作与家庭,从而留住更多教师。故选项D“学校托儿有助于教师留在教室授课”能够体现语篇的主旨,适合作本文标题。故选D。

【答案】28. D 29. C 30. B 31. B

【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“As people age, it’s common to lose confidence and develop a sharp sense of fear when beginning physical activities, especially those like surfing. Some surfing programs aim to fight these concerns by providing expert guidance and developing a sense of social connection while offering health benefits to seniors. (随着年龄增长,人们往往会在开始体育活动时失去信心并产生强烈的恐惧感,尤其是像冲浪这类运动时。一些冲浪课程旨在通过提供专业指导、培养社交联系,同时为老年人带来健康益处,来消除这些顾虑)”可知,这些冲浪课程的目标是帮助老年人克服恐惧、保持活跃。故选C项。

【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“This sport is gaining popularity because of its appeal (吸引力) to people of all ages. (这项运动正因其对所有年龄层人群的吸引力而越来越受欢迎)”可知,文章围绕趴板冲浪展开,指出这是一种适合老年人的冲浪方式,并通过Granny Grommets的案例说明冲浪能帮助老年人克服恐惧、保持活力,同时形成社交社群。因此,B项“让老年人参与冲浪”最契合趴板冲浪特别的吸引力,适合作为文章标题。故选B项。

C. Cool areas are also affected by climate change.

An unforgettable misunderstanding
In an English class. I had a rather amusing misunderstanding. When coming across the phrase “a sight for sore eyes”, initially I thought that it meant something unpleasant to look at because of sore eyes. Little did I know that I was completely off track!
After our teacher explained, this phrase turns out to be quite the opposite. It refers to something or someone that is delightful to look at and brings joy. I couldn’t help but laugh at my initial interpretation. It was truly a funny mix-up that left the entire class amused.

She asked Jane to go to bed early. But Jane said. “I really need to do well on this homework.
When she reached the school gate, Jane suddenly stopped. Her hands were empty. “Oh no! My schoolbag!” she cried. She could already imagine Mr. Jeff’s angry face.

With her schoolbag safely in hand, Jane hurried into the school building. She took a deep breath before entering Mr. Jeff’s classroom.
As Jane walked in, Mr. Jeff looked up and said, “Late and no homework again, Jane?” “Sorry I’m late, Mr. Jeff. I had some trouble with my alarms this morning,” she said, placing her homework on his desk. “My report is here.” Mr, Jeff checked Jane’s homework carefully, and then said, “This is... very complete.” For the first time, his serious face softened. “Good job, Jane.” Jane’s face lit up with joy. She felt a sense of accomplishment she hadn’t felt before. “Thank you, Mr, Jeff,” she said, her confidence growing. From that day on, Jane was more careful and organized, knowing that with effort and support, she could overcome her challenges.
