Pennine Way, the United Kingdom Stretching 268 miles from the Derbyshire Peak District to the Scottish Borders, the Pennine Way is the United Kingdom’s most famous long-distance path. The entire walk takes around three weeks, passing over wild east of Manchester and through the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, before crossing the ancient border of Hadrian’s Wall and moving on toward Scotland. Camino de Santiago de Compostela, Spain Rather than following a single path, the Camino, also known as the Way of St James, is actually a series of different pilgrimage (朝圣) routes. The most popular modern route follows a line across northern Spain from the French Pyrenees. While some choose to stay at monasteries (修道院) along the way, plenty of operators offer hotel stays and luggage transfers. Appalachian Trail, the United States Extending for 2,200 miles, the Appalachian Trail is billed as the longest hiking-only footpath in the world. It runs from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine, passing through some of the most remote places in the United States. Those keen on comfort can use companies like Go Shenandoah, which offers pre-booked accommodation and packed lunches. The Basho Wayfarer, Japan This self-guided trip follows a route taken by the poet Matsuo Basho over 300 years ago. The six-day hike starts in Sendai and works its way through the northern Toboku region, passing through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hiraizumi and along the ancient Dewa Kaido path, with its wonderful forests, before heading into the mountains of Natagiri-toge and finishing at the temple of Yamadera. 21. Hikers on the two trails can get the desired help. D. Hikers on the two trails may get across two countries. 23. What can a hiker do if he chooses The Basho Wayfarer? A. Stay at a monastery. B. Visit famous ancient sites. C Find a guide to accompany him. D. Pre-book accommodation and lunches. B December 13, 2022, was a normal day in the cafeteria (食堂) for students at West Alexander Middle School. The cafeteria is typically a social place with students having some free talk time and teachers watching from the stage. On this particular day, sixth-grader Jaxen Hubbard, was eating his lunch, including a bag of goldfish crackers. He had the crackers in one hand and in his other hand, he was holding the cap of his water bottle. When Jaxen related the events of this incident, he said he must have put the water bottle lid (盖子) in his mouth with a handful of goldfish. His breathing and speech were affected, but he showed no fear. He was able to communicate his need for help with his body language to teachers. The camera in the cafeteria caught all this on video. Officer Shawtae Watts heard a call on her walkie-talkie (对讲机) that there was an immediate need for help in the cafeteria and she was the first on the scene. She said the teacher on the walkie-talkie said, “We need help in the cafeteria NOW!” She said that when she entered the cafeteria, she could see Jaxen from across the room. She ran to him and could see that he was choking (窒息). She didn’t ask questions and began immediately administering the Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法) in an effort to clear his airway. Watts said it wasn’t long before the water bottle lid was out of Jaxen’s throat. It was a messy procedure, but a successful one. Officer Watts has been the School Resource Officer at West for a little over a year, and she had served in law enforcement since 2008. She said this was the first time in her career that she had to perform the Heimlich maneuver. When asked about Officer Watts, Assistant Principal Miss Jessica Mundy said, “Watts is always first on the scene. She is obviously a valuable resource to the staff and students at West Alexander Middle School.” 24. What happened to Jaxen? A. He got food poisoning. B. He suffered from a stuck lid. C. He was in conflict with other students. D. He began choking after drinking water. 25. How did Jaxen respond to his trouble? A. He tried to take the cap out. B. He was too frightened to move. C. He signaled the teachers to come. D. He turned to the camera for help. 26. How was the rescue? A. Simple. B. Effective. C. Well-planned. D. Time-consuming. 27. What did Jessica say about Watts? A. She is creative. B. She is energetic. C. She is outgoing. D. She is committed. C “I want to work full-time in China, honey.” An overseas call awakened the wife from sound sleep. “Why?” asked the wife with surprise, in a drowsy voice, from the other side of the ocean. In the United States, he had a great future ahead. At the age of 36, he became the youngest professor in the history of the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University, for his academic achievements. At 40, he became a tenured(终身的) chair professor at Princeton. When everything seemed perfect and admirable to others, he firmly decided to say goodbye to Princeton University, to an affluent life in the United States, and return to China. The news spread explosively. Many expressed confusions; many tried to persuade him; many made fun of him; and still many waited to have a good laugh at him. He said patriotism is the plainest feeling of a person. Who doesn’t love his motherland, after all? In his heart, the American dream is already something past; the Chinese dream is rising. After returning to China, he devoted all his energy, worked like crazy, and determined to do something big. He formed a life science research team. Every day, he works 12 to 16 hours at his laboratory. He is Shi Yigong, nicknamed “Da Niu” (someone with extraordinary achievements) by Tsinghua students. His given name, Yigong, comes from an idiom that means “devoted to public interest whole-heartedly”. “So far as I’m concerned, awards are of no special meaning.” Shi says calmly. In his 18 years of study in the United States, he never forgot his Chinese dream. In the next 18 years, the Chinese dream will be more beautiful and greater by the efforts of Shi Yigong and the likes of him. 28. Why was Shi determined to return to China? A. To look for a better career. B. To reunite with his wife. C. To live a quieter life. D. To serve his motherland. 29. What does the underlined word “affluent” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Busy. B. Miserable. C. Wealthy. D. Adventurous. 30. Why is Shi Yigong called “Da Niu” by his Tsinghua students? A. To show his unusual achievements. B. To support his life science research. C. To introduce his endless energy in work. D. To praise his honesty. 31. What can we know about Shi Yigong? A. He doesn’t care much about reputation. B. He is the youngest professor in history. C. His decision was well-received. D. His Chinese dream will be realized in 18 years. D The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea. Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers and finally end up in the sea. In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic(合成的) clothing can produce more than 1, 900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers. This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants. Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution.” Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design-his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one women’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding. 32. What has happened during the past five years? A. Fabric has become much stronger. B. Plastic pollution has been less serious. C. Many plastic bottles have been reused. D. Microfibers have been greatly improved. 33. What does Browne think of washing synthetic clothes? A. It is adding microfibers to the clothes. B. It is worsening environmental problems. C. It is making synthetic clothes last longer. D. It is doing great damage to washing machines. 34. What can be inferred about Browne’s Benign by Design research project? A. It has achieved great success. B. It hasn’t got anything done. C. It is known to very few people. D. It is facing some difficulties. 35. What’s the best title for the text? A It’s important to learn to recycle B. It’s never easy to solve pollution problems C. Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution? D. Are human beings moving forward or backward? 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) Hand gestures can be used to communicate while speaking. W: Today I’ll talk about a great artist, Leonardo da Vinci. He was born in 1452 in the town of Vinci, near Florence, Italy. At 15 Leonardo went to work with a famous artist. At the age of 20 he was already a master painter. Although da Vinci was a great painter, he never gave up his interest in other subjects. For example, he drew a flying machine 400 years before the airplane was invented. In all, da Vinci designed more than 1000 inventions. As a matter of fact, da Vinci started many projects that he never finished. He was always more interested in planning projects than doing them. He often quickly lost interest in one project and couldn’t wait to start another. So, he completed very few paintings. Da Vinci took four years to paint the Mona Lisa. Unfortunately, the man who ordered the painting didn’t like it and refused to pay him. However, 10 years later, da Vinci sold it to the king of France. The king hung it in the Louvre palace in Paris. Today, the Mona Lisa still hangs in the Louvre, which is now a museum. 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) A There are thousands of incredible trails that allow us to get up close to nature and here are 4 of the best hiking trails in the world. 21. 25 How did Jaxen respond to his trouble? A. D 29. C 30. A 31. 根据倒数第二段中“After returning to China, he devoted all his energy, worked like crazy, and determined to do something big. He formed a life science research team. Every day, he works 12 to 16 hours at his laboratory.(回国后,他投入了所有的精力,疯狂地工作,决心做一件大事。他组建了一个生命科学研究小组。他每天在实验室里工作12到16个小时)”可知,施一公回中国是为了为祖国服务。故选D项。 【29题详解】 词义猜测题。根据第二段“In the United States, he had a great future ahead. At the age of 36, he became the youngest professor in the history of the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University, for his academic achievements. At 40, he became a tenured (终身的) chair professor at Princeton.(在美国,他前途无量。 根据倒数第二段中“He is Shi Yigong, nicknamed ‘Da Niu’ (someone with extraordinary achievements) by Tsinghua students.(他就是施一公,被清华大学的学生戏称为‘大牛’(有着非凡成就的人))”可知,他的学生给他取名“大牛”是为了显示他非凡的成就。故选A项。 根据倒数第二段中“‘So far as I’m concerned, awards are of no special meaning.’ Shi says calmly.(‘在我看来,奖项没有什么特别的意义。’ 施一公平静地说)”可知,施一公并不在乎自己获得的奖项,也就是不在乎奖项所代表的名声。故选A项。 D The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. A. It’s important to learn to recycle B. It’s never easy to solve pollution problems C. Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution? D. Are human beings moving forward or backward? C 33. B 34. D 35. 由第一段“During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. ”可知,在过去的五年里,很多制衣公司,企业和环境组织已经开始把塑料转换成纤维来解决环境污染问题。结合上文,企业是用可回收塑料瓶转换成纤维。由此,在这五年会有很多塑料瓶被再次利用,结合选项,故选C。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。由第三段“He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.” Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. 由最后一段“When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design-his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. ”可知,在Browne要求世界知名制衣公司支持把对人类和环境有危害的衣服撤出市场的研究项目时,Browne并没有得到一个令人满意的答案。由此可推知,他的研究项目Benign by Design遇到了难题,结合选项,故选D。 【35题详解】 标题判断题。由第一段“ During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution.”( 在过去的五年里,大量的服装公司、企业和环保组织已经开始将塑料变成织物来处理塑料污染)和第一段“Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.”( 研究显示,微纤维是海洋塑料的最大来源。) 故C项(Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution?) 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) Hand gestures can be used to communicate while speaking. There are many universal hand signs; such as holding up an index finger to speak or interrupt, putting a finger to the lips to ask for silence. ___36___. But there are some hand gestures that might mean something different in another country. Many differences. ___37___. This gesture consists of creating a circle with the thumb and index finger with other fingers extended. In most of the English-speaking cultures, it means ‘ok’. In Australia it means ‘zero’ while in many Western countries it actually means ‘three’ and in China it is a way to indicate ‘seven’. Gestures with variation. This sign has the index and middle finger extend up to make a ‘V’. But there is a big difference in its meaning depending on which way the palm is facing. Palm Facing Out: ___38___ Palm Facing In: The sign is an insult similar to giving the middle finger, particularly in the UK and South Africa. Harmless or offensive? In the USA, the gesture of using your index finger to beckon someone to come to you is not a welcome gesture in Asia.
