[ 时文] PET plastic is a common type of plastic. It makes up 12% of all plastic in the world. Because it does not break down, it causes a lot of pollution. However, scientists at Northwestern University, one of the USA's leading private research and teaching universities, have found a new, cheap, and safe way to recycle PET plastic. This method works on real plastic waste like bottles, clothes, and mixed plastics.
How does the technique work? First, PET plastic is mixed with a cheap chemical and activated(活性化的) carbon. Then, it is heated to break the plastic into small parts. When these parts touch air, they turn into an acid used to make polyesters(聚酯纤维). This acid can be reused or made into other useful things. The only waste to come out of this process is ethanol(乙醇), a chemical used to make perfumes, dyes, rubber, and plastics.
How much plastic is recycled now? Only 9%of plastic in the world is recycled, says the OECD.The other 91% is burned, buried, or lost in nature. There are many reasons for this low recycling rate. Some plastics cannot be recycled;others are not recycled because of poor facilities(设施); It costs more to recycle plastic than to make new plastic; many people do not know how to recycle plastic.
How does plastic waste harm the environment?About 22% of plastic waste is not processed. Some of this plastic goes into the ocean and hurts sea animals. Some plastic breaks into small pieces called microplastics(微塑料). These microplastics pollute the air, soil, and our bodies. Current ways of managing plastic waste also harm the planet.Burning plastic releases harmful gases.
All in all, we need better and cheaper ways to recycle plastic. This new method could help the planet if scientists can make it work on a bigger scale.
4. What is the first step in the new recycling method described in the passage?

A. The advantages of PET plastic. B. The history of plastic pollution.
C. The process of chemical recycling. D. The environmental harm of plastic waste.
7. Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage? (①= Paragraph 1,②= Paragraph2…)
A.①/②③④⑤ B.①②/③④/⑤
C.①/②③④/⑤ D.①/②③/④⑤

[时文]As far back as the Shang Dynasty, people wore carved(雕刻) masks made of bone and shells. They shouted“nuo, nuo” in a loud voice to scare away evil spirits. Though a lot has changed since then, a special class in a middle school in Pingxiang, Jiangxi Province, is taught where students can learn how to recreate these Nuo masks.
They draw outlines on a pumpkin or melon, then carefully carve out the eyes, nose and mouth.“These

exercises are important for anyone who wants to be a Nuo mask maker,” said their teacher, 59-year-old Peng Guolong, who is one of the first-generation inheritors of Nuo mask carving to keep this tradition alive.
Peng said,“Nuo is our traditional culture in Pingxiang. When we were young, we danced the Nuo dance. But it's hard to pass it on.”
The good news is that Nuo masks, known for their intricate(复杂的) designs, are gradually gaining popularity in the market.“These days, they aren't often used in rituals(仪式), but many people buy Nuo masks to display at home as art.I' ve got a lot of them in my house, too,” Peng said.
“I first discovered painting when I was 8. By the time I was 13, my father had taught me the arts of oil painting, Nuo mask carving and embroidery(刺绣),” he said.
When he was 25, he worked in a company in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, as a painter and designer. In 1996, Peng returned to his hometown to set up a Nuo mask carving factory.
At the 2010 Poyang Lake Ecological(生态的) Festival held in Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi,Peng's Nuo masks were a huge success, selling out immediately, and even the masks he created on the spot were pre-ordered by customers.
Since then, his Nuo masks have become popular in cities such as Guangzhou, Shanghai,Hong Kong and Beijing, and have even been exported to the United States and Japan.
Peng believes that ___▲____ . So far, he has trained 30 apprentices(徒弟). He said,“I hope that in the future, with the help of factories, we can increase production and allow more people to discover and appreciate Nuo masks.”
8. Why does the middle school teach students to make Nuo masks?
A. To pass the tradition on. B. To make the students active.
C. To make the class interesting. D. To master a way to scare away evil spirits.
9. From the passage, we can infer Nuo masks are now
A. being displayed in museums B. becoming more and more popular
C. used only in traditional rituals D. mainly sold in Peng's hometown
10. Which of the following can be put into“___▲____”in the last paragraph?
A. ancient skills should be passed down to younger people
B. modern technology is more important than traditional crafts
C. Nuo masks have no practical use in today's society
D. factories should replace traditional workshops completely
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The popularity of Nuo masks B. The history of Jiangxi's Nuo culture
C. Peng Guolong and his Nuo masks D. A special middle school in Pingxiang

[时文] Chinese scientists have built a small robot, and with the help of the robot, they can explore(探索) the deepest place on the earth—— theMariana Trench. The robot weighs only 2.7kilograms, about the same as a large book, and was made by researchers from Beihang University. The research, which was published in the journalScience Robotics in March, helps China join a small group of countries that can study the deepest parts of the ocean.
The project was led by Professor Wen Li and his team, who started designing the robot in 2019and finished building it in 2021. The robot, which is 50 centimeters long, has been used in deep-sea exploration with help from other Chinese research teams.
Zuo Zonghao, a student working on the project, explained that the robot was built to test new technologies for underwater movement.“The most important part of our robot is a tiny soft motor that weighs only 16 grams,” he said. This motor, which uses special materials, allows the robot to swim, move its fins, and even crawl on the seafloor.
So far, the robot has been used 14 times by China's deep-sea submarines(潜艇).These submarines carried the robot down to the seabed, where it was controlled by robotic arms.“It runs on a special battery(电池).During each operation, it worked for more than 20 minutes,”Zuo said.
In 2021, the robot reached a depth of 10,666 meters in the Mariana Trench! In the future, scientists plan to add floating devices, cameras, and sensors(传感器) to the robot. They also want to build a bigger version someday.
Zuo said these robots could help in many ways, like finding underwater resources, studying old shipwrecks, and checking the health of the ocean. This tiny robot, which is helping scientists explore the deep sea, shows how technology can uncover the mysteries of the ocean.
12. Why have Chinese scientists built the small robot?
A. To study the surface of the ocean. B. To learn about the deepest parts of the ocean.
C. To replace human divers in deep-sea tasks. D. To test the special battery technologies.
13. What can we infer about the soft motor mentioned in the passage? .
A. It is too heavy for the robot to swim properly. B. It is the key part that makes the robot move underwater.
C. It was developed by a team from another country. D. It can only work for a few minutes underwater.
14. Why do the scientists plan to add floating devices and cameras to the robot?
A. To make the robot reach much deeper places in water.
B. To help the robot communicate with humans on the surface.
C. To get the robot to perform more tasks in the deep sea.
D. To reduce the weight of the robot for easier swimming.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A small robot exploring the deep sea
B. The development of underwater robots
C. The importance of exploring the Mariana Trench
D. A clever way to change ocean exploration
