I first saw this world on a cold night 20 years ago. I opened my eyes to the light. From then on, it was all history. Then I went to school and opened my eyes to this big, big world with all these different colours. In primary school, I was one of the few Asians. I felt lonely sometimes with my black hair and yellow skin.
I am now a college student. And I wonder where this cultural difference lies.People ask me whether I feel any difference because of the colour of my skin. I say,“No, I don't feel any difference from others.” At Stanford, we are all the same. But it really depends on whether the individual wants to feel the same as others. There are Asians on campus who make themselves cloistered(与世隔绝的). That's their choice.
I' ll never forget about my roots in China. But the fact is that I grow up in America. It's my home. I talk like Americans. Most of the time, I think like Americans. There is always a large part of me that is“white”. However, because I am raised in a Chinese family, many of my beliefs are traditionally Chinese:treatment of the elderly, manners in public, etc. I can never and will never forget about my Chinese background, my sweet home in Harbin.

There are many English proverbs(谚语) about“home” Here are some of the best.
There's no place like home. | This proverb comes from the song“Home Sweet Home”.It simply means home is always the best place. Maybe it's not that comfortable, but it's where love and family can be found. After being away for so long, you will always find there's no place like home. So if you have been elsewhere for a long time, you can say“There's no place like home” as soon as you arrive home to show how you miss your home and parents. |
The longest way round is the shortest way home. | Though this proverb also has the word“home”, its meaning is not about“home” but about working and studying skills. Sometimes some students do their homework in a really quick way. They may think it' ll save time if they do it as fast as they can. However, if they only care about the speed(速度), it's easy to make mistakes(出错), and more time will be spent redoing the task. So slow down; slow is fast. |
| Home doesn't have to be the building that you live in. It is where you most want to be. Most people have their“home” in their mind. It may be the same city they live in now, the city where they grew up, the house where their parents live in, or the place where they are raisıng their family. |
