Harmful garbage
Recyclable garbage
Wet garbage
Dry garbage
Lamps, batteries, nail polish (指甲油) and other things with harmful chemicals.
Paper, books, boxes, glass bottles and newspapers.
Food, vegetables, flowers, leaves and eggshells (蛋壳).
It includes pens, toilet paper, tape, hair and towels (毛巾).
You might not think much about where your garbage goes. But now you might want to know. On July 1, Shanghai introduced a new garbage sorting policy. People there need to put different kinds of garbage —wet, dry, recyclable and harmful, into different dustbins. Other cities in China will do the same soon.
Why is garbage sorting a big problem? It’s because there is too much garbage these days. It is bad for our soil, air and water. Actually we can make use of some garbage again. And first we need to sort our garbage.
For example, if you put an old battery into the “harmful waste” dustbin, people can use it to make new batteries. But if you don’t, the battery will end up somewhere else. Then, it will pollute the environment.
Can’t factories sort garbage for us? Yes, they can. But it takes many workers to do this and costs lots of money. If we all sort our own garbage, things will become much easier.

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (灌溉渠) and other projects began to be built in my village, “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.
Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

The modern world runs on energy. However, in the past human society used very little energy like wind, water and fire could provide. There are many different ways to create energy, but some ways are harmful to the environment.
Fossil fuels (化石燃料) are the most common kind of energy. They include coal, oil, and natural gas. First, people have to dig them from the ground. This can sometimes harm the environment. But when people burn these fossil fuels, they can give off a lot of harmful gases, which is considered to be one of the greatest causes of global warming. This might harm the environment.
Tidal (潮汐) energy is another way to make electricity. It uses the ocean tides to make electricity. But some kinds of tidal energy can kill many fishes and other sea animals. Also dams can create lakes and lots of clean energy, but they change the way that rivers run. So they can do great harm to the balance of nature around the lakes and along the rivers.
