We just moved into a small apartment. Our old house was beautiful and huge. Our home now? Half the size and crowded. There were still boxes everywhere.
The day after the move, while the kids were in school, I dealt with some boxes and hung the family photo on the wall. But it just didn’t feel like home. Maybe I could make some chocolate biscuits, just like my grandma used to do whenever I needed cheering up. When I added eggs to my mixer, it suddenly stopped working.
“Really?!” I felt like crying. What would my grandma do? During those hard times, she used whatever she had to support her family. I didn’t think Grandma would give up easily. She would find another way. So I ran to the remaining boxes. I found Grandma’s old white mixer there! I turned the switch (开关) on… nothing. Ugh! The old mixer that was broken beyond (无法) repair was just like my life these days.
“Come on! Try again,” a small voice said. I turned the switch back on. To my surprise, the mixer started to work slowly!
Two hours later, the kids opened the door. “Mmmm, cookies! Thank you, Mom,” they said, jumping excitedly. For the first time, our new house felt like home. It even smelled like home, just like Grandma’s house always did.
Maybe this house wasn’t as big as our old one. But then again, maybe home wasn’t where we lived. It was where we shared the sweet moments and the small miracles (奇迹) of every day, like a broken mix er that came back to life when I needed comfort most.

Have you ever wondered why your parents make you eat your vegetables? Do you remember how awful they tasted, but your parents seemed to enjoy them? Do you think your parents loved vegetables when they were children? Well, they probably didn’t! So, what happened?
The truth is that our taste can change over time. As we grow older, taste starts disappearing. That can make some tastes feel weaker, but it might also help us like new foods.
Did you know that an adult usually has between 2,000 and 10,000 taste buds? The more you have, the more tastes you can enjoy. Young children with growing taste may have a more acute sense of taste than adults. That explains why some children might not like broccoli now but could love it when they grow up.
Of course, how food tastes isn’t just about taste—the smell matters a lot, too. If food smells strong, it might turn children away, even if they don’t mind the taste. The good news is that you can learn to like new foods. Sometimes, adding something you love, like cheese, can make a big difference.
Finally, you can come to dislike certain foods you once loved. If you eat too much ice-cream and then get sick, you might not want to eat it for a long time. This dislike can stick around for years!
Your taste in food can change in surprising ways. So, even if you’re not excited about those vegetables today, remember that your body will thank you later. One day, you might even enjoy them!
26. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Foods. B. Friends. C. Children. D. Vegetables.
27. What do the underlined words “more acute” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Older. B. Safer. C. Stronger. D. Stranger.
28. How can we learn to like new foods?
A. We can try them many times. B. We can add something to them.
C. We can eat something nice first. D. We can smell something strong first.
29. What does the writer want to say in the last paragraph?
A. We should eat vegetables. B. Everyone will love vegetables.
C. Vegetables can change your taste. D. Vegetables can make you excited.
30. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Parents always want children to eat vegetables.
B. The smell plays an important role in how food tastes.
C. People’s tastes for food can change in different ways.
D. The number of taste buds makes a difference in how food tastes.

Most people met some difficulties when they started learning a new language and so did I.
English pronunciation was my first difficulty. In English, the same letter has different sounds sometimes. For example, the pronunciation of the letter “a” in “bath” is different from that in “bathe.” The “ou” in “south” is not the same as the “ou” in “southern.” Luckily, my teacher carefully guided me to pronounce English words correctly.
To speak English well, just like native speakers, I often listened to tapes. What’s more, my everyday conversations with the English-speaking people I met on the street helped me a lot.
English grammar wasn’t as difficult as French grammar. But this doesn’t mean I had no difficulty in learning it. To learn it well, I did as many grammar exercises as possible. It was no fun at all.
To do well in English writing, I tried to read popular books by famous American and English writers, like Mark Twain and George Eliot. Also, I kept a diary every day for five years.
After long and hard years of studying English, how happy I feel when I do well in English!

We just moved into a small apartment Our old house was beautiful and huge.
