We humans have been changing the environment around us for a very long time. A recent study found that humans in Africa may have used fire to prevent forest regrowth as early as 85,000 years ago. We change the animals around us, too. Most famously turning wild wolves into dogs, maybe as early as 40,000 years ago.
And our effect on animals hasn’t stopped, right up to the present day. Because as we change the world, animals have to change if they want to survive.
For one example, consider how the roads we drive on could be changing the birds that fly over them. A study of swallows(燕子) in Nebraska found that, from 1983 to 2022, the birds’ wings got shorter — probably because having smaller wings made them better at avoiding cars. Ivory hunting may also have led elephants to be born without tusks (the teeth of the elephants). Both male and female African elephants usually have tusks. But half of the female elephants were born without tusks, unlike those before. Living close to humans may even make some animals smarter. City raccoons（浣熊）are better than country ones at opening bottles to get food. City raccoons have also learned to keep smaller fields so they don’t have to cross major roads, where they’re in greater danger!
As we see these changes in animals，we’re reminded that animals are adapting to（适应）our world. What about trying to adapt, too? Maybe slow down on roads for crossing animals, or leave part of our gardens for wildlife. The earth belongs to all of us — let’s share it！

Air pollution! Plastic waste! Desertification (沙漠化)! Such things happen everywhere on the planet, which is terrifying. But actually, such big problems can be solved by small steps.
First, remember to turn off lights and unused devices (设备) when leaving a room. An interesting fact is that the energy saved by unplugging a phone charger (取下手机充电器) can be used to power a lamp for 3 hours. Also, try to take shorter showers and fix leaking taps (漏水的水龙头) as soon as possible.
Second, sort and recycle trash. Separate paper, plastic, and glass before throwing them away. Besides, using items again, like bottles or bags, also cuts down trash. For example, bring a water bottle you can use again to school instead of buying plastic ones.
Moreover, protect green spaces. Planting trees or growing flowers at home makes the air cleaner. Joining community clean-up activities, such as picking up rubbish in parks, keeps our surroundings tidy.
Lastly, it’s not enough to depend on just one person to make a difference. Sharing ideas that are good for the environment with friends and family and starting a “Green Club” at school to organize monthly clean-up events are effective ways to get more attention and actions. Even small changes, like using cloth bags, can encourage others.
