“Old wives' tales” are beliefs passed down from one generation to another. For example, most of us remember our parents' telling us to eat more of certain foods or not to do certain things. Is there any truth in these teachings? Some of them agree with present medical thinking, but others have not passed the test of time.
Did your mother ever tell you to eat carrots because they are good for your eyes? Scientists now report that eating carrots can help prevent a serious eye disease called macular degeneration.Eating just one carrot a day can reduce the possibility of getting this disease by 40%.Garlic (蒜) is good for you, too.It can kill the type of virus that causes colds.
Unfortunately, not all of Mom's advice passed the test of medical studies. For example, generations of children have been told not to go swimming within an hour after eating. But research suggests that there is no danger in doing so.Do sweets cause tooth problems? Well, yes and no.Sticky sweets made with grains tend to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars.
Even though science can tell us that some of our traditional beliefs don't hold_water,_there is still a lot of truth in the old wives' tales. After all, much of this knowledge has been accumulated (积累) from thousands of years of experience in family health care.We should respect this body of knowledge even as we search for clear scientific support to prove it true or false.

These days, ice is easy to get. You can walk to your ice maker and have ice fall into your glass. Hundreds or thousands of years ago, ice wasnˈt this easy to be made or to get. In the past, it involved harvesting ice from frozen bodies of water.
People throughout history have known the value of ice. People in ancient China would wait till the winter to make ice blocks from frozen rivers and then they would use ice blocks to keep food cool through warmer months. In ancient cultures, ice was luxury(奢侈品). Royalty would ship ice and then use it for juice drinks and other treats. In an age when there were no ice makers, ice was truly short-in-supply and a sign of power.
Sometimes its translucence(半透明)made it perfect for decorative purposes. Centuries ago, some Chinese villagers would freeze buckets and water, cut a hole in the top and pour out the unfrozen water. Then theyˈd put a
candle into the center. And that is what we call ice lanterns(冰灯)now.
And there are now a lot of big events around the world, some of which result in entire multi-story buildings made from ice, with colored lights that make them look like a frozen fairy tale land.
In 1990, Alaska became the host of the annual World Ice Art Championships, which is now a month-long event that attracts dozens of teams and tens of thousands of visitors. Canada is home to several large ice-based events, including the Ice Magic Festival near Lake Louise and the Deep Freeze Festival in Edmonton.
But the biggest and most mind-blowing event is the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China. When completed, the grounds will turn into a real ice world, full of huge buildings and beautiful art with the best visual effect. The ice world includes many features like the Great Wall of China and the Egyptian pyramids, all quite at home in this city that has a lower temperature in January.
25.What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To show the main idea.
C. To illustrate the background. D. To introduce the way of making ice.
26.Why did the author say the ice was luxury?
A. The ice would only be used in winters. B. The ice was transported by ships.
C. The ice would be made for juice drinks. D. The ice was hard to get in warmer months.
27.What can we learn about the festivals in the last two paragraphs?
A. They are not big enough to be hosted. B. They are only to be seen in Canada.

Last year I went to the carnival in Rio, and it blew my mind. It had been my dream to attend the famous carnival for many years, so I was excited. However, the moment I arrived, I was a little bit nervous because there were so many people on the streets. They said that five or six million people would come to Rio during carnival time and that about two million of them would be on the streets on any given day. Luckily, I had a local guide, my sisterˈs friend Ronnie. He said he would take care of me and show me all the most enjoyable parts. He did not let me down.
Well, the carnival is most certainly all about the samba. Itˈs a style of music and dance whose origins are linked to African drumming music. Lots of Africans were transported to Brazil used as slave labor(奴隶)by the Portuguese, so this mixed culture of African, Latin and European styles is really strong here. Samba music is usually fast and exciting with a lot of drums. Itˈs the kind of music that you canˈt help dancing to, and I learned that as I followed Ronnie through the crowd, my hips and shoulders were swinging almost involuntarily.
Ronnie had got us tickets for the samba parade, which represents Brazilian culture, held inside the Sambadrome where the top samba schools compete for the championship, but we still had a long way to go through the street parties. He said most people enjoy the carnival by making their own parties on the street. About the samba parade, twelve main teams compete for the championship, and if they win, their performance will be talked about for years to come. Ronnie and I spent the day moving from one street party to another. There were more snacks, more drinks and lots of dancing. Do I regret missing the main parade? Not at all. I experienced the carnival like the locals, and it was truly amazing.
29.What made the author nervous in the beginning?
A. The doubts about the visit. B. The crowds on the streets.
C. The inability to find a local guide. D. The worry about visiting a new country.
30.What can we learn about samba from the passage?
A. Samba developed from America. B. Samba has little to do with the carnival.
C. Samba has a long and mixed culture. D. Samba music is usually slow and soft.
31.Why didnˈt the author regret missing the main parade?
A. He met some amazing local people. B. He didnˈt have the tickets for the parade.
C. He celebrated the festival in a local way. D. He enjoyed the carnival by making his own parties.
32.According to the passage, which of the following words can best describe Ronnie?
A. Capable and calm. B. Creative and patient.
C. Confident and dynamic. D. Thoughtful and dependable.

In childhood weˈre told not to talk to strangers. But now weˈve grown up, and itˈs time to forget that, because having a chat with someone we donˈt know could change our whole day.
Gillian Sandstrom, a lecturer in psychology, would often talk with a woman working on a hot dog stand. “I started nodding and smiling at the lady. When she replied, the small connection made me feel seen, safe and part of the community,” says Sandstrom. This positive connection led her to study the effect of simple social communication. She found that people were about 17 percent happier on the days when they started a chat over a coffee machine, or said hi to a neighbour. “My work clearly shows that talking to strangers makes you more positive,” she says. “It also encourages you to trust other people more, which makes the world friendlier and safer.”
The reason is simple. We want to connect with others. The more people we do this with, the happier we are. In fact, according to a study from Harvard Business School, people who talk within more different relationship levels, including friends, family members, co-workers and strangers, are happier than those with a less broad mix of communication.
The problem is that many of us find the idea of beginning a conversation with strangers a bit frightening. Humans are naturally afraid of being refused. As a result, even though we can sense deep down that nothing too bad could happen if we start a conversation with a stranger, a part of us is afraid of getting hurt doing it.
The good news is that what we fear most rarely happens. In Dr Sandstromˈs work, she found that only ten percent of contact received no answers. The more often we speak to people, the easier it becomes, “Doing it time and time again was the key,” says Dr Sandstrom. “The more people talked to strangers, the less worried they felt about being refused and more confident they became in their ability to start and continue a conversation.”
33.What drove Sandstrom to start her study?
A. Her personal experience. B. Her childhood memories.
C. Her interest in social study. D. Her chats with co-workers.
34.What does the study from Harvard Business School suggest people do?
A. Talk more with friends. B. Group different people.
C. Enlarge their social circle. D. Select their favorite partners.
35.Why are many people unwilling to talk with strangers?
A. They fear getting physically injured. B. They are not used to making friends.
C. They worry about being turned down. D. They have no idea how to start a talk.
36.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Skills Necessary for Social Life B. Tips on Leaving Comfort Zones
C. The Key to Building Connections D. The Power of Talking to Strangers

The traditional Chinese solar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Minor Snow, the 20th solar term of the year, ranges from Nov. 22 to around Dec. 6. 37 Here are several things you should know about Minor Snow.
Wearing hats and scarves
In China, starting in Minor Snow, the wind blows from the northeast a lot. 38 But in fact, according to an old Chinese saying, “The head is the place where all passages of the body gather.” Itˈs sensible to keep oneˈs head warm.
Drinking soup
During Minor Snow, indoor heating begins to work. 39 According to practices in traditional Chinese medicine, this accumulation of “inner heat” in oneˈs body can cause physical problems. The solution is to drink more hot soup, such as cabbage and bean curd soup.
Making preserved pork and pickled(腌制的)vegetables
After Minor Snow, the temperature declines sharply and the air becomes dry. 40 In the past, due to the poor storage conditions and inconvenient transportation, people developed many ways to store pork and vegetables. Thus during the Chinese Spring Festival and even in the bitter winter, the whole family could enjoy them.
Avoiding spicy food
41 Spicy food, therefore, is one of the best choices. However, experts say itˈs wise not to eat overly spicy food, since that will increase your inner heat.
A.Then people need to drink soup to keep healthy.
B.It is the best time to start making the salted food.
C.So many people prefer to put on their hats and scarves.
D.On cold dry days, people may need some hot food to keep warm.

But Dr Otto said people should worry 19 about variety and more about diet quality, such as filling half your plate with only one or two vegetables you like. Actually, what 20 is the amount of fruits, vegetables, nuts and other nutritious food you eat, not the variety.

C. They are all festivals about ice. D. They are likely to happen in summer.
28.What can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Usage of Ice B. The Icy Gamesˈ Host
C. The Ice Was Not Cheap in the Past D. The Art and Value of Ice
