Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the world forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more. Animals are more than just beautiful and interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks, the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice increased quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animals or plants on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.
4. Animals are important to us mainly because ________.
A. they give us a source of food B. they are beautiful and lovely

7. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

Earthquakes strike suddenly at any time of the day or night, but there’s no way to tell when. If an earthquake happens, it may cause many deaths, injuries and damage. So you need a good preparation ahead of time. Decide how and where your family will get together if separated. Choose an out-of-state friend or relative that the family members can call after the quake to report where they are and how they are. Know the safe places in each room: under the strong tables, desks, or against inside walls. Keep enough food, water and other things, including a flashlight, a radio, medicines and clothing.
During the earthquake, you should keep a clear head and never be too nervous to know what to do. Protect your head and neck with your arms. If possible, take a book, a pillow or any other things to protect yourself from falling glass and ruins. If you are indoors, you must immediately lie under any strong furniture. If outdoors, move to an open area away from trees, buildings, walls or power-poles. If you are in a narrow valley, move to the centre of it and look up for falling stones. If you are in a car, move to the side of the road and stop the car. Do not stop near buildings, power lines or on or under bridges. Stay in your car until the shaking stops.
Do not move a badly injured person unless he is in great danger after the earthquake. Do not use the telephone immediately unless there is a serious injury or fire. Turn on your radio for instructions and news reports. Be prepared for aftershocks. If you want to leave your home, post a message inside your home telling your family members where you can be found.
8. To prepare for an earthquake, we should make sure of ________.
A. when an earthquake may happen
B the place where we can find our family
C. how to receive instructions and news reports
D. the money with which we can buy food and water
9. From the passage, we know that during an earthquake ________.
A. we should keep calm and know what to do clearly
B. the trees and walls can protect us if we are outdoors
C. we should protect our necks with a pillow or a book
D. falling glass can be used to help us
10. If we are driving when an earthquake happens, we should ________.
A find a strong building to hide in
B. move to the side of the road and stop there
C go on driving quickly to leave the area
D. leave the car as soon as possible
11. After an earthquake, we should ________.

Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand differently.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger”. The survey, carried out among 1, 002 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.
In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting with their fans about everyday life.
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame and fortune. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.
Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don't necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It's an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm, and is always a learning experience. And that's enough for him.
12. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Most young Britons choose to be vloggers as their job.
B. The Internet is influencing young Britons’ career choice.
C. The Internet is taking the place of traditional studios.
D. Young Britons cannot find jobs without the Internet.
13. Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers?
A. Vloggers can earn greater fame and more money on the Internet.
B. There is too much competition in the traditional show business.
C. The Internet makes it convenient to enter show business.
D. Anyone with a computer will surely become a star.
14. What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?
A. Only a few vloggers can be successful. B. A vlogger cannot earn fame or fortune.
C. People often see the bright side of being a vlogger. D. Dreams will always remain to be dreams.
15. What do young people like David do on the Internet?
A. Learn from others. B. Become an online hit.
C. Hold running races. D. Mix jobs with hobbies.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D

During breakfast, Alan suggested going to the Lego Land to have fun and his mom agreed.
“We’ll stop by the supermarket and buy some snacks and fruits. Now hurry and eat and then we’ll go. It’s going to be a lovely day. Grandma is coming with us. She’ll be here any minute.”
Alan ate his breakfast and then ran into his room to get his shoes. The problem was that he could only find one of them. He looked under his bed, but all he could see were dirty pants. He moved some of his toys out of the way, but still couldn’t find his shoe. After he had checked everywhere in his room, he ran into the kitchen. “Mom, I can’t find my shoe. Will you wait while I look for it?” he asked.
His mom thought about how many times she’d told Alan to clean his room up. She said something to Alan’s grandma in a low voice. Then, she said to Alan,“You will have to stay home. Your dad and I will take your brother Alex to the Lego Land. Grandma will stay at home with you.”
“No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the Lego Land,” Alan cried. “I’m sorry, Alan. I’ve told you a dozen times to clean your room and you did not do it. You can’t find your shoe now. It’s your own fault for not cleaning your room. You will stay home.”
Alan ran into his bedroom, crying. His mom came to the door and said, “Alan, clean that room of yours before I get home. I’ve told Grandma not to give you any sweets until you make your room clean and tidy.” She went out with Alex and the brothers’ dad. After a minute, they drove away.

【答案】One possible version:
Alan sat on his bed and cried for a long time. And then he wiped his tears and started to clean his room. It took him two hours to clean up his room. “I did it!” he said proudly. He even found his missing shoe. He ran to the living room. “Grandma, come and see. I cleaned my room and found my shoe.” Grandma looked at Alan's room and smiled. “If you had kept it this way, you wouldn't have lost your shoe and your mom wouldn't have punished you,” she said.
Alan and his grandma were sitting at the table, eating when his mom,dad and Alex came home. “Well, look at Alan's room! It's clean,” his dad said. “How was the Lego Land? Did you have fun? I wish I could have gone there with you,” Alan said. “If you keep your room clean, we may go to the Lego Land again next month,” his mom said. From then on, Alan tried to keep his room clean.

C. they keep the balance of nature D. they give us a lot of pleasure
5. What has happened to the animals on the earth?

B. Once a certain kind of animals is gone forever, there will never be any more.
C. Killing all rats and mice may cause some problems.
D. People must not kill any animals.
7. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Every person will know the importance of protecting wild animals.
B. Animals in danger will not be killed any more.
C. The number of some animals in danger will increase.
D Animals in danger will be kept away from people.
C
B. the place where we can find our family
C. how to receive instructions and news reports

A. find a strong building to hide in
B. move to the side of the road and stop there
C. go on driving quickly to leave the area
D. leave the car as soon as possible
11. After an earthquake, we should ________.
A. move an injured person quickly
B. use the telephone immediately
C. turn on the TV to get news reports
D. leave a message before leaving home

15 What do young people like David do on the Internet?
A. Learn from others. B. Become an online hit.
C. Hold running races. D. Mix jobs with hobbies.
