Honeybees are great dancers, but they don’t just do it for fun. Scientists have long known that honeybees move their bodies. It is their way of sharing information.
When a bee starts dancing, it steps forward. At the same time, it moves side to side. It keeps doing this while it moves around. They dance just like number eight and scientists call this the “waggle dance”. It helps other bees find food. The bee’s position tells them which way to fly. The more a bee moves, the farther away the food is. The longer it repeats these moves, the tastier the food is.
Now a new study shows that honeybees don’t have these dance skills when they are born. Young bees learn them by watching the older bees. In March 2023, scientists from the University of California, San Diego, wrote these findings in a scientific magazine.
The study finds that bees can learn by imitating (模仿) each other. This is called “social learning”. Many animals learn in this way, like monkeys and birds, but most of these animals have bigger brains. Bees have much smaller brains.
To know how bees learn the waggle dance, scientists recorded videos of honeybees in a lab. They compared two groups of young bees which were 10 days old. In the first group, young bees could watch older ones dance. In the second group, young bees could not watch older dancers. They found that the ones in Group 1 were better dancers while the ones in Group 2 were not good at the waggle dance.

What’s your dream job? How much do you know about it? A group of students from Tianjin found a problem among young teenagers: Most of them have few ideas about their career (职业) plans.
To offer teenagers proper career guidance (指导), the students from Tianjin TEDA No. 1 Middle School started a project called “Dian Zhi Cheng Shi”. “Our survey shows that 75 percent of students want to know more about different jobs. Doctors, accountants (会计) and lawyers are the top three,” said Wang Xinran, 16, the project leader.
Based on students’ needs, the team interviewed (采访) 32 experts in different fields and put their interviews online. They shared true stories behind each job, allowing students to learn about the jobs clearly. “We also invited the experts to give speeches in our school in order that students could talk to them face to face,” said Wang.
Team member Lu Jinyan said his most impressive (印象深刻的) interview was with a photographer (摄影师). “I used to think being a photographer was cool. But now I know that they need to deal with lots of problems, such as a sudden change of weather or broken cameras. They also need to communicate (交流) with different people, which is very hard.”
But the project doesn’t mean disappointing students by telling them the truth. “We want to show their good sides rather than the bad sides,” said group member Zhao Yajie. “The project’s name means turning a career into a poem. He didn’t know what to say or how to work with her. But Betty was kind and friendly. She smiled at him and said, “Don’t worry. We can do this together.” Frank felt a little better.
As they worked on the project, Frank started to feel happy. Betty was full of ideas, and Frank found himself enjoying their conversations. They laughed and shared stories. Frank felt like he had a real friend for the first time. But then, something unexpected happened. They lost all their work because of a computer problem. Frank felt so sad and frustrated (沮丧的). He thought they would never finish the project on time. Betty, however, stayed calm and said, “It’s okay. We can start over. We can make it.” Frank was amazed by her strong will and felt encouraged.

You may have experienced the feeling. Your mouth feels like it is on fire. Your eyes start to water. You just ate one of nature’s hottest foods—the chilli pepper (辣椒)!
Chilli peppers, also called chillies, are found in dishes around the world. Chillies come from the capsicum plant (辣椒属植物). They are “hot” because they contain something called capsaicin (辣椒素).
Capsaicin is very good for your health. It helps you breathe better, and it may even help keep you fit. Capsaicin makes you feel less hungry. It also makes your body burn more calories.
We can measure the heat (辣度) of chillies in units called Scoville Heat Units (SHU). The world’s hottest chilli is the Carolina Reaper. It sometimes measures up to 2 million SHU!
Eating a hot chilli can be uncomfortable, but some people love to eat it. In 2009, Anandita Dutta Tamuly, a woman from Assam, India, became famous for eating chillies. She ate 51 hot peppers in just two minutes! The peppers were Nag a Jolokia (“Ghost Peppers”). They grow in Assam and are one of the hottest chillies in the world.
“I found eating chillies was a great way to stay healthy,” said Tamuly. She began eating chillies when she was a child. She ate chillies when she didn’t feel well. “Every time I have a cold or flu, I just eat some chillies and I feel better. To be honest, I hardly notice them now.”
48. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 1?
A. The chilli pepper. B. The feeling. C. Water. D. The mouth.
