But a changing climate and environment are washing away soil and weakening its health. However, most family farmers here, who have owned and worked the land for generations, recognize soil health is crucial in reducing the worst effects of climate change. Wendy Johnson left Iowa to pursue a career in fashion in California in 2002. But when her grandmother passed away, Wendy began thinking about the legacy (家业) of the family farm: She didn’t want to see all the hard work her grandparents and parents put into the land here lost. Thus, in 2010, Wendy returned and began co-managing the family farm, Center View Farm, with her father. Center View Farm was already an early adopter of no-till (免耕) farming then. Tilling the soil actually degrades soil health. Experts estimate the planet loses billions of tons of rich soil each year. This would be a disaster for the world’s food systems unless regenerative agricultural practices, which help fight climate change and grow food while restoring nature, are adopted. For example, in no-till farming, new seeds are planted directly into the residue (残留) of previous crops. But Wendy wanted to do more. Since she moved back, Wendy has been working with Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), a farmer-led nonprofit, to innovate the way her family farms. She managed to plant various cover crops to preserve the richness of the soil. She also attended the field days hosted by PFI that help connect farmers and enable them to learn from each other’s innovations. At one PFI field day, she learned about organic animal raising. Now, while Center View Farm continues to provide the main income stream for her parents, Wendy started Jóia Food & Fiber Farm, a certified organic farm, to test other restorative practices. 4. What motivated Wendy to return to Iowa? A. Her love of her grandmother. B. Her promise to farm with her father. C. Her dream of being a fashion designer. D. Her desire to carry on her family’s work. 5. Why is Center View Farm mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To present a solution to low crop yields. B. To provide a role model for local farmers. C. To introduce a novel way to improve the soil. D. To stress the significance of smart agriculture. 6. What role did Wendy play in the PFI field days? A. An enthusiastic participant. B. A generous sponsor. C. A knowledgeable instructor. D. A responsible organizer. 7. What does Wendy’s practice indicate? A. Cover crops matter a lot. B. Organic change occurs naturally. C. Land is the lasting legacy. D. Sustainable farming is climate action. C Think of evolution (进化), and you might think of Darwin’s natural selection. But according to researchers writing in the journal BioScience, it is not our genes that are determining our current evolutionary journey. It is our culture. “Cultural evolution eats genetic evolution for breakfast,” said Zachary Wood, a researcher in ecology and environmental sciences at the University of Maine. Although genetics drove the most fundamental changes in our evolutionary past, this process is incremental. Cultural evolution, in contrast, can occur within the time it takes to pass a law. Timothy Waring, an associate professor at the University of Maine, said, “Culture solves problems much more rapidly than genetic evolution. This suggests our species is in the middle of a great evolutionary transition.” Cultural practices integrate everything from farming techniques and legal requirements to medical advances. Cultural evolution is not new — the transition to agriculture, for example, has seen humans move from hunter - gatherer societies to permanent settlements. But, Wood and Waring argue, the impact of cultural evolution is growing. When we see increases in our life expectancy, it is less often the result of genes and more likely the product of advancements in healthcare and other related aspects. Still not convinced? “Ask yourself: what matters more for your personal life outcomes, the genes you are born with, or the country where you live?” said Waring. “Today, your wellbeing is determined less and less by your personal biology and more and more by the cultural systems that surround you — your community, your nation, your technologies.” Some experts believe we are heading towards a future where all of humanity will function as a single unit, much like an ant colony (群落) does. Wood and Waring do not believe we are there yet, but predict that in the long term, culture will continue to grow in influence over human evolution until genes become secondary and are ultimately controlled by culture. 8. What does the underlined word “incremental” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Normal. B. Gradual. C. Difficult. D. Short. 9. How does the author show the impact of cultural evolution? A. By giving an example of medical advances. B. By mentioning the origin of human society. C By citing the opinions of different researchers. D. By highlighting cultural practices in various areas. 10. How did Waring sound in paragraph 4? A. Confused. B. Curious. C. Confident. D. Critical. 11. What does the last paragraph focus on? A. The loss of human individuality. B. The speed of cultural change. C. The future dominance of culture. D. The structure of an ant colony. D For some readers, a dictionary opens up a world. Dictionaries contain multiple pleasures, such as settling word-game wars by turning actual pages. For the rest, a dictionary is either outdated or strictly online. In 2012, Encyclopaedia Britannica stopped printing new editions, going digital-only. In his book, Unabridged: The Thrill of (and Threat to) the Modern Dictionary, American journalist Stefan Fatsis writes of the shift brought about by our decade-old dependence on search engines: “Definitions, good and bad, were a click away, and most people didn’t care or couldn’t tell which was which: expert research, scraped data, zombie (僵尸) websites, whatever popped up in a search.” When I was a child, I loved dictionaries, and so did every sensible parent in Calcutta. If your child was literate, one of the 20 volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary or an illustratedCollins was the surest way to keep them happily occupied, setting them off on hunts for lost or forgotten words. Fatsis sees dictionary-making as “a human endeavor (努力) stretching back to the third millennium BCE”. From the Akkadians to Sanskrit scholars, what dictionary makers hoped to do went far beyond the already tricky task of writing definitions: their job was to explain and track “the endless shifts in language”. Change is inevitable though Fatsis also asks what we lose in the name of convenience. He writes, “the job of the dictionary was firmly established… By the time I finished this book, it wasn’t clear how much longer flesh-bone-and-blood lexicographers would be needed to document the march of the English language. Between traditional search engines and AI-enhanced search through LLMs (large language models), the way we look up words, and find meaning in language itself, has changed.” We can’t claim that humanity still needs physical dictionaries. Like encyclopedias and atlases, the best of them have long moved online. Indeed, the starting points of most search engines were the encyclopedias and dictionaries compiled (编纂) by experts. But I plan to hold on to my beloved, dog-eared physical dictionaries — such priceless time capsules, one of the last paradises of freedom from the endless scroll of digital content. 12. What has reduced people’s reliance on physical dictionaries? A. The decline of the print media. B. The convenience of online lookup. C. People’s indifference to accuracy. D. Publishers’ insistence on going digital. 13. What can we infer about the future of real-life lexicographers? A. Their workload will double. B. They will remain in demand. C. Their existence is threatened. D. They need to upgrade their skills. 14. Why does the author stick to physical dictionaries? A. They boost long-term memory. B. They last longer than digital files. C. They offer an escape from screens. D. They give more authoritative definitions. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. A Word in Favor of Dictionaries B. My Love for Looking up Words C. A Best-seller on the Theme of Change D. Due to the high-speed development of economy, families from different backgrounds came here to find a better life. Amanda’s classmate and friend, Rama, was from one of those families. One day after school, Amanda and Rama were chatting and Rama mentioned how much she missed her friends and hometown. “It is hard to leave,” Rama sighed, “but my family needed to be somewhere that is easier to make a living. Holding Rama’s hands, Amanda encouraged her to share more and she knew Rama loved to sing and dance with her friends back in her hometown. After learning about Rama’s story, Amanda started to notice more students like Rama in her school. For the first time she realized that those students looked sad in their eyes. Sometimes because of their different accents, they couldn’t communicate well with others, which made them always sit or stand silently at the back of the classroom. “They are having a hard time, we should show them kindness and love!” she told her mother one day. Amanda asked her mother what she could do to help make them feel welcome. Amanda’s mother suggested, “What about using art? Maybe it will be easier to communicate through art.” Amanda thought for a while and nodded. Like her friend Rama, Amanda loved all forms of art, like painting, singing, dancing, and performing, through which she could tell different stories about her family, and her life. The next day, Amanda went to the Activity Center in her school and proposed her plan of an art show. The officer thought it a great idea. Inspired and excited, Amanda set about her plan with several friends. At the Activity Center they filled a room with paper, paint and pencils. They even made a small stage! Everything ready, they invited all the new students in her school and Amanda encouraged them to share something special about their hometown in any art form. 【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. D 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了美国爱荷华州受气候变化影响土壤受损,温迪为延续家族农场事业返乡,采用免耕法、种植覆盖作物等可持续农业方式,助力应对气候变化。 【4题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“But when her grandmother passed away, Wendy began thinking about the legacy (家业) of the family farm: She didn’t want to see all the hard work her grandparents and parents put into the land here lost. (但当她的祖母去世后,温迪开始思考家庭农场的遗产:她不想看到祖父母和父母在这片土地上付出的所有辛勤劳动付之一篑。)”可知,温迪想继承家族事业的愿望促使她回到爱荷华州。故选D项。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“Center View Farm was already an early adopter of no - till (免耕) farming then. Tilling the soil actually degrades soil health. Experts estimate the planet loses billions of tons of rich soil each year. This would be a disaster for the world’s food systems unless regenerative agricultural practices, which help fight climate change and grow food while restoring nature, are adopted. For example, in no - till farming, new seeds are planted directly into the residue (残留) of previous crops. 根据第四段中“She also attended the field days hosted by PFI that help connect farmers and enable them to learn from each other’s innovations. At one PFI field day, she learned about organic animal raising. (她还参加了由PFI主办的实地日活动,帮助农民建立联系,使他们能够相互学习彼此的创新。在一次PFI实地考察日,她学习了有机动物饲养。)”可知,温迪在PFI领域扮演热心参与者的角色。故选A项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章大意以及第一段“Iowa has long been known as the heartland of farming in the U. S. But a changing climate and environment are washing away soil and weakening its health. However, most family farmers here, who have owned and worked the land for generations, recognize soil health is crucial in reducing the worst effects of climate change. C. By citing the opinions of different researchers. 【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章开篇打破人们对进化的传统认知(达尔文自然选择与基因决定),提出核心观点:当前人类的进化历程由文化而非基因主导。 【8题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段“Although genetics drove the most fundamental changes in our evolutionary past, this process is incremental. Cultural evolution, in contrast, can occur within the time it takes to pass a law. (尽管基因在我们过去的进化中推动了最根本性的变化,但这一过程是incremental。相比之下,文化进化可以在通过一项法律的时间内发生。)”可知,基因进化与文化进化形成鲜明对比,文化进化速度极快,因此“incremental”应表示与“快速”相反的含义。选项B“渐进的”符合对比逻辑,故选B。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“When we see increases in our life expectancy, it is less often the result of genes and more likely the product of advancements in healthcare and other related aspects. (当我们看到预期寿命延长时,这往往不是基因的结果,而更可能是医疗保健和其他相关领域进步的产物。)” 可知,作者通过“医疗进步使人类预期寿命延长”这一具体实例,直观体现了文化进化对人类的重要影响。故选A。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段Waring的提问“Ask yourself: what matters more for your personal life outcomes, the genes you are born with, or the country where you live? (问问自己:对你的个人生活结果而言,你与生俱来的基因和你生活的国家,哪个更重要?)” 以及后续明确结论“Today, your wellbeing is determined less and less by your personal biology and more and more by the cultural systems that surround you (如今,你的福祉越来越少地由个人生理因素决定,越来越多地由你周围的文化系统决定)” 可知,Waring的语气坚定且有说服力,充满自信。故选C。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Some experts believe we are heading towards a future where all of humanity will function as a single unit, much like an ant colony (群落) does. Wood and Waring do not believe we are there yet, but predict that in the long term, culture will continue to grow in influence over human evolution until genes become secondary and are ultimately controlled by culture. (一些专家认为,我们正在走向一个未来,所有的人类将作为一个单一的单位,就像一个蚁群一样。伍德和韦林不相信我们已经到了那个地步,但他们预测,从长远来看,文化对人类进化的影响将继续增长,直到基因成为次要的,最终由文化控制。)” 可知,该段核心聚焦于文化在未来对人类进化的主导地位。故选C。 D For some readers a dictionary opens up a world. Change is inevitable, though Fatsis also asks what we lose in the name of convenience. Human Endeavors in Dictionary-making 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要讨论了数字时代纸质词典的使用减少现象,分析了其原因,探讨了词典编纂者的未来,并表达了作者对纸质词典的珍视。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“In his book, Unabridged: The Thrill of (and Threat to) the Modern Dictionary, American journalist Stefan Fatsis writes of the shift brought about by our decade-old dependence on search engines: “Definitions, good and bad, were a click away, and most people didn’t care or couldn’t tell which was which: expert research, scraped data, zombie (僵尸) websites, whatever popped up in a search.”(美国记者斯蒂芬·法特西斯在其著作《未删节本:现代词典的诱惑与威胁》中,记述了人类对搜索引擎长达十年的依赖所带来的变革:“无论是精良的释义还是粗劣的诠释,皆可一键获取。绝大多数人对此毫不在意,抑或无力辨别——专业研究、抓取数据、僵尸网站,凡是搜索所得皆照单全收。”)”可知,网络搜索的便捷性使人们只需点击一下就能获取定义,从而减少了对纸质词典的依赖。故选B项。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段中“By the time I finished this book, it wasn’t clear how much longer flesh-bone-and-blood lexicographers would be needed to document the march of the English language.(等我写完这本书时,已无法确定,人们还需要有血有肉的词典编纂者多久,来记录英语语言的发展进程)”可知,作者不确定现实中的词典编纂者还能被需要多久,由此可推知,现实生活中的词典编纂者的生存受到了威胁。故选C项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But I plan to hold on to my beloved, dog-eared physical dictionaries — such priceless time capsules, one of the last paradises of freedom from the endless scroll of digital content.(但我仍打算保留我那本心爱的、书页卷角的纸质词典——它就像无比珍贵的时光胶囊,也是摆脱无休无止滚动的数字内容后,仅存的自由天堂之一)”可知,作者坚持使用纸质词典是因为它们提供了从屏幕中解脱出来的机会,是摆脱无休无止滚动的数字内容的天堂。故选C项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段“We can’t claim that humanity still needs physical dictionaries. Like encyclopedias and atlases, the best of them have long moved online. Indeed, the starting points of most search engines were the encyclopedias and dictionaries compiled (编纂) by experts. But I plan to hold on to my beloved, dog-eared physical dictionaries — such priceless time capsules, one of the last paradises of freedom from the endless scroll of digital content.(我们无法断言人类仍需要实体词典。 故选A项。 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Keep Skin Cancer At Bay “You have skin cancer.” No one wants to hear such scary words. Students off the stage clapped their hands loudly as the final note ended. And then, they began to come to the stage and share their stories one by one. The art show lasted for two hours that day and everyone enjoyed it so much. Everything seemed to change after that art show. They began to communicate with others and make new friends.
