Kitty knew this would not be right,so she hurried after the man.Touching him on the arm,she said,"Please, sir. You
dropped your wallet.""Thank you, dear,"said the gentleman, taking the wallet. Then, noticing how poorly dressed she was,
he said,"Why didn't you keep the wallet,my child?""That would be stealing,"replied Kitty."But,"she continued honestly,
"before I thought I must give it back to you,I did wish I could keep it,for then I could buy Mamma a red apple."Hearing
this, the man handed her a dollar and said,"You are a good girl.Take the dollar so that you can buy your mother a red
apple."Then, the man said goodbye to Kitty and left. With the dollar,Kitty happily ran to the store.
The store owner saw the familiar girl rushing in,one dollar in hand.He quickly picked out the biggest, roundest, and
reddest apple and gave it to Kitty.Taking the apple,Kitty was very happy and handed the dollar to the owner. But the
owner didn't take it,saying."You keep it and the apple is free."Kitty was so pleased and thanked the kind store owner.
Then, she went back home. Her mother was surprised to see the apple and the dollar.Kitty told her mother the whole story.

In 2006,as a 10-year-old living in one of Delhi's busiest markets,I would often run downstairs to
buy milk, eggs or vegetables for my mother. The shopkeepers knew me by face and often guessed my
order before I even spoke. These small market runs taught me more than I realised at the time-quick
mental maths, conversations with strangers, and backup plans when a shop was shut.So much
unintentional learning.
Over time, these routines became daily comfort.Whether it was me or my mother,we enjoyed the
smiles, brief chats, and snacks along the way-small moments that quietly held our lives together.
Now,things are different.With Blinkit,Zepto,and Instamart,groceries arrive in 10 minutes.While I
still enjoy shopping in the market after work,my mother begins her day by comparing prices on apps and
ordering everything with a few taps ()The grocery trips that once lifted her mood, improved her
health, and helped her stay connected with the neighbourhood have disappeared. The joy of being known,
of interacting,is dying.
And it's not just her. Many of us now rely more on apps and less on people. Our growing reliance on
instant delivery is reducing those everyday moments of interaction. There's the financial cost too. When
you're too tired or too busy to plan your groceries, you end up ordering in pieces-adding things you
don't need just to hit the free-delivery minimum.
Of course, these apps are a gift on tough days when we're sick or short on time. But next time you
feel like opening a grocery app,try walking to your local shop instead. You might come back with more
than just groceries-a smile,a quick chat, and a sense of connection.Sometimes, the cost of convenience
isn't what you pay. It's what you miss.
24.What does the author think of early market runs?
A.Adventurous.
B.Valuable.
C.Tiring.
D.Complex
25.How did the author's mother change her shopping habit later?
A.She turned to online shopping.
B.She visited groceries with neighbours.
C.She cared about discounts in stores.
D.She ordered whatever lifted her mood.
26.What concerns the author about instant delivery?
A.It takes away small social moments.
B.It involves paying extra service fees.
C.It results in poor physical condition
D.It makes people addicted to shopping.
27.What is implied in the last paragraph?
A.A shared gift doubles its joy.
B.Convenience comes at a cost.
C.A smile is free but worth a lot.
D.Rush breaks human connection.

Many dog owners believe their pets understand and respond not only to commands such as"sit"
and "stay, but also to words referring to their favorite objects."Bring me your ball"will often result in
exactly that. But science has had trouble determining whether dogs really activate ()a mental image
in their minds when they hear the name of an object.
A new study has found that beyond being able to respond to commands like "roll over,"dogs can
learn to connect words with specific objects -a relationship with language called referential
understanding that had been unproven in dogs until now.
The study involved 18 dogs and a procedure using electrodes (attached to dogs'heads to
measure brain activity and register brain waves.Dog owners participating in the study would play a voice
recording in which they said the name of their dog's toy-like "ball"-and then they would show the
dog an object. The researchers measured the dogs'brain activity when the object in the recording matched
the object that was displayed, and also when it differed.
"We expected that if a dog really understands the meaning of the object's word,it will expect to see
that object. And if the owner shows a different one, there will be a so-called surprise reaction in the brain,"
Boros said.
The study found a different brain pattern when the dogs were shown an object that matched the
word, compared to when it didn't-suggesting the animals formed a mental image of an object based on
hearing the word for it.The study supports"theories of language evolution (which actually say that
referential understanding is not necessarily unique to humans,"added Magyari,an associate professor at
the University of Stavanger in Norway.
While the study has received praise, some experts have expressed doubts about its findings.
Behavioral scientist and professor of psychology,Clive Wynne, said in a post onFacebook that he believes
that all the study shows is that dogs respond to stimuli ()-but that they don't actually understand
the meaning of specific words.
28.What has puzzled scientists about dogs?
A.How dogs activate mental images in mind.
B.How dogs respond to their favorite objects.
C.Whether dogs can connect words with objects.D.Whether dogs can truly understand commands.
29.How did the researchers conduct the study of dogs?
A.By observing their interactions with owners.
B.By training them to identify specific objects.
C.By monitoring their brain waves in different situations.
D.By comparing their reactions to different human voices.
30.In the study, surprise reactions in dog's brain are caused by a mismatch between
A.what they want and what they are given
B.what they hear and what they are shown
C.what they are trained to do and what is tested
D.what they are familiar with and what is displayed
31.What is Clive Wynne's attitude toward the study's findings?
A.Doubtful.B.Indifferent.
C.Objective.
D.Supportive.

One windy day in March,Kitty Miller was on her way to school when she glanced into a store
window and saw a great pile of lovely red apples..“Oh!'she exclaimed(惊叫).“How lovely! If only
Mamma could have one!"Immediately, the store owner recognized the familiar girl and asked her to pick
one.Kitty just shook her head and ran away shyly.
Kitty's mother was extremely poor. She had been a dressmaker ever since Kitty's father died, and had
to work hard to earn a living for herself and Kitty.Unfortunately, she had recently become very sick and
had to lie in bed all day long. When Kitty was away at school, the house was incredibly cold and cheerless.
She missed her little angel-that is what she called Kitty.Kitty took great care of her mother. She cooked
her food, mostly soup. They could not afford fresh fruit.Kitty would even sing to her mother at night.
When Kitty reached the school that day,her thoughts were full of her sick mother and the lovely red
apples. She was usually an excellent student, but that day she made so many mistakes that the teacher
looked at her in surprise. The little girl could only sit at her desk, with her book before her,and dream of
those red apples.
When the class was dismissed,Kitty started homeward slowly. She had walked only a short distance
when she saw a man in front of her drop his wallet.Running quickly forward, she picked it up.The wallet
felt quite heavy in Kitty's little hand.
"There must be a good deal of money in it,"thought Kitty."How I wish I could keep it,so that I
would then be able to purchase a red apple for Mamma, and so many other things she needs."
