Unit 4 Stage and screen Developing ideas:Good Book, Bad Movie? After this period of learning, you are expected to: (1)acquire and state the main idea of this passage and the author’s attitude and opinion through scanning; (2)present the structure of argumentative essays and retell the argumentative based on the mind-map; (3)accurately express your views of adaptation movies, explain your reasons, and support them with examples. Learning objectives: Good Book, Bad Movie? Have you ever read any of these books? Before reading Also called The Story of the Stone, it is one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels. Holmes is a fictional consulting detective(n.侦探) in London created by Scottish author and physician(n.医师) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Written by Lao She, it describes the difficult life of a rickshaw(n.黄包车) puller during the years of warlord turmoil /ˈtɜːmɔɪl/n. Originally written in English, it covers the turbulent(adj. 动荡的) events in China from 1900 to 1938, and it focuses on the lives of several families and people. Set in the Jazz Age of the 1920s, it’s regarded as one of the greatest American novels. The Iliad and The Odyssey are two epic poems from Ancient Greece. They have had an enormous effect on Western culture. Before reading adaptations (movies based on books) Now let’s read the passage to find out the author's opinion. Good Book, Bad Movie? What do you think of these movies? What is the author’s attitude? Good Book,Bad Movie? 1.They say that “a picture is worth a thousand words”,but the briefest look at books and the movies based on them would have anyone questioning this common saying. All too often, great words end up being turned into cinematic turkeys”. 1.be worth sth./doing sth. This problem is worth discussing. This problem is worth discussion. 2.be based on 以...为基础/依据 3.have+宾语+宾补(非谓语动词) He had her go there. He had her standing in the rain for two hours He had his wallet stolen at the railway station. 4.All too often时常;通常 5.end up doing 以做...结束 6.turn into 变成 have sb. do sth. 让某人做某事 have sb. doing sth. 让某人一直做某事 have +宾语+过去分词 让别人做某事/遭遇某种不幸 be worth doing值得做  be worthy to do sth./ be worthy to be done 值得做某事/值得被做  be worthy of doing sth./ be worthy of being done值得做某事/值得被做  It is worthwhile doing sth./ to do sth. The book is worth reading. =The book is worthy of being read. = The book is worthy to be read. =It is worthwhile reading /to read the book. Read for the main idea of paragraph 1 The author puts forward a phenomenon that great words often end up being turned into cinematic “turkeys”. 8 2. Good movies need good stories. If so,why has one of the earliest and greatest works in Western storytelling,Homer’s The Odyssey, never had an equally great movie (based on it)? Movies need strong characters. So why have the movies (based on The Great Gatsby) never been praised as “great”? Movies of course need impressive images,so why has Alice in Wonderland only resulted in movies (best described as “interesting”)? 同样地 3. be praised as 被称赞为…;被誉为是… 4. impressive images给人印象深刻的画面 5. resulted in 导致,造成” 同义短语为 lead to 6. described as 过去分词短语作后置定语 What do good movies need Opposite examples (Books) Details good stories strong characters impressive images The Odyssey The Great Gatsby Alice in Wonderland never equally great never been praised as great best described as interesting Adj 相反的 Read para 2 carefully and complete the chart. The Great Gatsby Leonardo DiCaprio Read the passage again and choose the best answer. 2. What’s the function of Paragraph 2? A.To raise the reader’s cultural awareness. B.To prove good movies need good stories. C. To further confirm that good books always end up being turned into bad movies. D.To show that movies need impressive images. 3. One of the key reasons behind this is (that while a book usually takes a few days to read,a movie typically lasts under two hours). This means (that great books can lose plot details and characters when they move to the big screen). This is something (that even the highly successful Harry Potter movies can’t escape from),(with fans of the books disappointed) not to see some of their favourite characters in the movie versions. 1.that引导表语从句:无成份,无意义 2.while并列连词, “而,然而”(对比) 3. take time to do sth. 典型的 6. with的复合结构(with +宾语+宾补) 7.be disappointed to do sth. Read for the main idea of paragraph 3 One of the reasons is that plot details and characters can be lost. The old man walked (with a stick in his hand). He just sat there (with his mouth open). He fell asleep (with the light on). (With so many people watching her), she felt at a loss. (With his homework finished), he went out playing football with his friends happily. (With so much work to do), the boy can't watch TV. with 后的宾语补足语 With a lot of questions _________, the new president is having a hard time. (settle) 2) In parts of Asia you must not sit with your feet _________ at another person. (point) 3) The murderer was brought in, with his hands ___________ behind his back. (tie) 4) With the time ________by, she came to understand his mother. (pass) to settle pointing tied 即学即练 passing 18 4.Movies also disappoint us when things don’t look the way we imagined them in the books. Take, for example, the epic movie Troy,(which is in part based on Homer’s The Iliad and was met with mixed reviews from the audience). The most questionable issue was the actress (chosen to play the part of Helen). Many people thought she didn’t live up to Helen’s title of “the most beautiful woman in the world”,influencing opinions of the movie to some extent. 1. epic movie史诗电影 2. in part 在某种程度上;部分地=partially 3. meet with 遭受,受到 mixed adj. 标题,称号,头衔 10. influencing 非谓语动词作结果状语 =in a way/to some degree Read for the main idea of paragraph 4 Another reason is that things we expected may disappear in the movies. Troy(特洛伊) Helen Reasons for “bad” movies Supportive examples (Movies) Details a book: a few days a movie: under 2 hours lose plot details and characters highly successful Harry Potter things don’t look the way we imagined them in the books The Iliad Read para 3-4 carefully and complete the chart not to see some of their favorite characters 5.There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Furthermore, books and movies are two different forms of media and therefore have different rules. With this in mind, perhaps we should judge a movie in its own right, and not against its original source. Interestingly, audiences have in recent years turned to television series such as Sherlock or Mad Men,(which can have many characters and gradual plot development). Perhaps, one day, readers(of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most admired work)will find themselves glued to their screens by episodes of The Great Gatsby. 1. Furthermore此外;而且 2. with...in mind 把…… 3. in one’s own right 凭借自身 5. turn to转向 ;求助于 television series 电视连续剧 6. admired work 杰出作品;被赞美的作品 7. find oneself glued to... 深深吸引 be glued to sth. Read for the main idea of paragraph 5 Come to a conclusion that we should judge a movie in its own right. At that time, I found him crying in the street. He found himself surrounded by two dogs. Lucy finds Bob very honest. When he woke up, he found himself in hospital. I find it useful to learn English well. Chinese people find it our duty to help develop African countries along the Belt and Road(一带一路). ①But when the police arrived, they found the door (lock) and all windows closed.  ②Lucy finds the text (difficulty) to understand.  ③With the world becoming a global village, I find it necessary (have) a good command of English. 语境运用 to have locked difficult 27 2026/1/6 Read para 5 carefully and answer the question How should we treat movies and books? Why? What have the audiences turned to? Why? 对比 1. What’s the text type of this passage? Read the passage again.
