As 18,000 hockey fans crowded into Climate Pledge Arena for the Seattle Kraken's first home game,
Brian Hamilton, the assistant equipment manager for the visiting Vancouver Canucks, laid out the team's
hockey sticks,masks and bottled water.As he did so,he didn't notice the woman,Nadia Popovici,who sat
directly behind him.Nor did she pay much attention to him. That would change soon.
Halfway through the action,Popovici's eyes locked onto something peculiar on the man.Through the
glass, she spotted an odd-looking mole (on the back of Hamilton's neck, reddish with an irregular border.
She had seen plenty like it as a hospital volunteer and soon-to-be medical student. It was a melanoma(
瘤)
"It's so uncomfortable to have something on your body pointed out,"she told the Seattle Times. But she

knew she had to say something. As Hamilton walked near the ice between periods,Popovici,in Kraken gear,
knocked hard on the glass, typed a message on her phone and held the screen high enough:"The mole on
the back of your neck looks like cancerous.Go see a doctor!"
Hamilton glanced at the brightly-lit message for only a second. That's weird,he thought.Walking away,
he uneasily rubbed the back of his neck.A few days later,he visited the Canucks's doctor, who agreed that
the mole looked alarming and ordered a biopsy(话组织检查).It came back positive-a stage-Ⅱmalignant
melanoma,life-threatening if left unattended.Hamilton had the cancerous mole removed, and the surgery
was excellent.
She took me out of a slow fire, says Hamilton."The words out of the doctor's mouth were if I
ignored that for four to five years,I wouldn't be here. The two connected at the next Canucks-Kracken
game, where Hamilton was able to thank her in person. No thanks were necessary,Popovici said,It was

Although I am 28 years old,the time when I feel profoundly 48 is when I get nostalgic for
days when people were able to go on holiday without being continually contacted, because the price of
sending a text message was the same as a glass of wine.WhatsApp has changed that.
Unlike social media and email apps, which can be temporarily deleted,WhatsApp is the dominant
method that we use to communicate with our loved ones.It is hard to switch off as a result of the constant
flow of information.Deleting the app even while on holiday doesn't feel like an option, when people use it
5/12

to convey important information alongside everyday dross. And in any case, the problem isn't the app itself,
of course;it's the fact that being available 24/7 means we have lost our sense of boundaries in terms of what
to communicate and when.
"Just don't reply.What's the big deal?"said a friend.Easier said than done!Trying to create those
boundaries can make you feel like a terrible person. It's not just about self-imposed pressure, but the subtext
(of what not replying says.Previously you could blame your silence on high phone network rates or
a poor signal.but now a non-response suggests you don't care.
I have tried a number of tactics to give myself space while on vacation.I turned off read receipts
because being visibly online felt very exposing.Turning off notifications came shortly afterwards. On a trip
to Greece,I trialed a voice notes and video notes ban.Recently I've even gently talked to friends about not
sending me non-urgent messages.
It doesn't matter whether we are leaving the country or holidaying at home, this precious period of quiet
may be the closest thing we have to a break.Although we are getting botter at knowing how to prioritize rest,
there is still a necessity for us to shape our environment to enable this.We also have to consider the role we
play in helping our loved ones to recover and refresh.
28.What does the author actually miss?
A.Traditional ways of communication.
B.The price of text messages in the past.
C.Holidays without constant communication.
D.Experiences of drinking wine with friends.
29.What is the subtext of not replying now according to the author?
A.Too much self-generated pressure.
B.The poor mobile signal in the area.
C.A sign of indifference or lack of concern.
D.High mobile phone communication costs.
30 What does the underlined word "tactics"in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Suggestions.
B.Notices.
C.Reasons.
D.Methods.
31.What does the author try to convey through this text?
A.Be brave enough to say no to unreasonable requests.
B.We should have boundaries when messaging others.
C.It's necessary for people to obey the social manners.
D.A suitable app makes a great difference to our break

In recent years, much of my life,as a consumer has shifted to what I like to call background spending.
6/12
扫描全能王创建
As I've subscribed to more apps and streaming platforms, significant sums of my money tend to slip away
each month without my ever thinking about it.
Think of it as automated trade.Spending without the trouble of spending.Acquisition without action of
thought.
But while this flood of subscriptions was sold to me on the condition that it would make my life more
trouble free, there was a certain shock I felt upon discovering how much I was spending without realizing
each month ($179.45).
You see,the thing about background spending is that it tends to happen, well,in the background without
your full attention. And there lies the point.
"Hand over your credit card details and let us take care of the rest,"these companies promise us.But by
agreeing to this trade,we've become lazy passive consumers. And this laziness breeds more laziness because
most of us can't be bothered with conducting regular reviews of our subscription spending. We're too lazy to
even notice of cancel!
I know it's not just me who is suddenly living life as a smooth-brained subscriber. The average
consumer spends $273 per month on subscriptions, according to a 2021 study of 2,500 by digital services
firm West Monroe. Not a single person surveyed knew what his actual monthly spending was.
It's understandable why this model is so attractive to businesses. As companies questioned traditional
advertising models, subscriptions offered the promise of "selling once and earning forever."And while
subscription services have been around for decades (think Wine of the Month Club).more customers have
been willing to sign up thanks to the widespread availability of smartphones and the increasing ease of home
delivery.
While these subscriptions promise ease and happiness, not all of us are satis fied.Last year.the Keamney
Consumer Institute found 40 percent of consumers believe they have too many subscriptions.Almost half of
us also think we pay too much for streaming video-on-demand subscriptions.
32.What can we know about background spending in paragraph 2?
A.Its purpose.
B.Its feature.
C.Its procedure.
D.Its requirement.
33.What makes it possible for background spending to happen?
A.Its attractive price.
B.Some people's poor habit.
C.Its secure service.
D.Some people's addiction to it.
34.Why is the subscription model appealing to businesses?

For me,it started when I picked up Grant Faulkner's collection of 100-word stories,Finsver.Until that
moment,I had no idea that a story could even be told in so few words.36But I soon ran into tricky
troubles, which taught me valuable lessons. Here are tips I learned the hard way so you won't have to hit the
same roadblocks on your journey of writing micro novels.
Outline the entire story.Much like writing any long story that may dishearten you,you have the options
of building a complete outline of all the events of the story. It helps have an idea of what you want to have
happen over the course of that structure.37
Don't get lost in the details.38 When you write long works, you can find yourself using far more
language than you really need to communicate your ideas. When you write micro novels, you have to write
only what is necessary. The bottom line is that you have to determine how much you need to give the reader
to understand the scene.
3Microfiction can be the twin of prose poetry. Therefore, each word must matter in a micro
novel. So you have to be so selective and get comfortable with language. You might even employ poetic
devices in your language. At last read your work aloud and feel the rhythms of language fitting comfortably
in your mouth.
Start strong and end strong, but don't leave the middle before.40Ideally,you still want your
readers to start the micro novel and refuse to put it down until they reach the last word. After all, each
sentence should carry its own weight as a story.
A.I discovered there were few.
B.Focus on what is most important.
C.Approach each chapter in an exploratory way.
D.After that,I tried my hand at writing micro novels

Dear Mary,
Thank you for sharing your weekend dict list with me.Knowing that you are interested in making your diet
healthier,I'm writing to provide some personalized advice based on your food choices.
Overall.I think your eating habits have room for some adjustments.First and foremost,it's essential to
establish consistent eating habits. What this means is that you should try to have three main meals and a couple
of healthy snacks throughout the day to keep your energy levels stable.Beyond this,it couldn't be better if
you could cut down on your sweet drinks and desserts. There is increasing evidence that the real driver of poor
health is sugar.Instead of reaching for sugary snacks, consider healthier alternatives such as fresh fruit, nuts,
yogurt,or whole grain crackers. These options will satisfy your sweet cravings while providing valuable
nutrients and fiber.
If you have any specific questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.I'm sure you will be on the right
path towards a hcalthier cating lifestyle.
Yours,
Li Hua

The big day for my performance caine. My hands shook slightly as I waited backstage, the embarrassing
memory of that first day flashing through my mind repcatcdly. When the music started,I stepped onto the
stage, eyes fixed on the spotlights.I moved through plies, each step practiced hundreds of times.I danced not
for applause, but for myself, pouring the determination I had built since that first day into the performance.

As I finished the grand plie perfectly, the theater crupted in warm applause. My heart raced with a mixture of
relief and pride.
When I stepped off the stage,Ms.Barton made her way to me smilingly. She placed a firm but gentle
hand on my shoulder."I'm truly impressed,Sarah,"she said, her usual strict tone gone."That was graceful-
you've worked incredibly hard."I stared at her, surprised by her praise I had once thought impossible to earn
from her."Thank you,Ms.Barton,"I replied, grinning. She patted my shoulder softly."Effort and persistence
pay off,"she said.At that moment,I realized her strictness was never cruel,but a push to grow.Ballet,once a
challenge, had become another passion-all thanks to her strict demands and my refusal to back down.
