阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Today I’m talking to 16-year-old Rick who works as a volunteer at an animal rescue centre.
Interviewer: Rick, why do you volunteer at the centre?
Rick: My friends and I often do volunteer work during holidays. My dream is to become an animal doctor, so I think this would be a great chance to get some experience of working with animals.
Interviewer: What do you think is the most interesting part of the work?
Rick: There are over 100 dogs here and we help train them by playing with them. When people come and if they want to give a home to an animal, it’s interesting to talk to them. I also learn a lot about how to care for sick animals.
Interviewer: Is there anything that you find hard?
Rick: We have to take the dogs out for a walk, and it can be really hard to control them, so that’s the most challenging thing.
Interviewer: And how do you feel about animals being left without a home by people?
Rick: Well, I would never do it, but I think that sometimes people just can’t manage to look after an animal—maybe they can’t afford the food or feel they don’t have any other choices.
Interviewer: Well, Rick, I agree with you. Thanks for your joining.

Imagine you’re in a sci-fi world, and you video call your friend. You might see them in a three-dimensional (3D) way—or in holograms (全息影像). Although this isn’t possible in real life yet, researchers recently made holograms easier to create, said a new study.
To take a 3D photo of a person most holographic technologies need special cameras. They record how the person looks from different angles (角度) under different lights. The researchers from Chiba University in Japan made a new computer program. It can turn normal pictures we take into 3D holograms.
Their program uses a technology called deep neural networks (深度神经网络). First, it receives information from an image taken by a normal camera and then predicts (预测) the depth (深度) of things in the image. For example, in a 3D photo, the background should be deeper than the person.
With all the information, the program creates a 3D hologram. But it can look strange at first. The program will then check the hologram to fix problems and make it look more real.
The program can be used to create holograms in VR headsets (头显设备). If it’s used in cars, drivers can see information, such as road signs, in 3D. This makes it easier for drivers to see and makes sure that they won’t miss important information.
In the future, when holograms become more common, they can also help doctors. Medical students can learn quickly by looking at 3D images of the human body, and doctors can better understand a patient’s illness.
4. What does the new program use to create a hologram?
A. A special camera. B. A normal picture.
C. Recordings from different angles. D. Recordings under different lights.
5. In what order does the new program work?
a. Receive a normal photo.
b. Create the final 3D hologram.
c. Check and correct the 3D hologram again.
d. Create the first 3D hologram.
e. Predict the depth of things in the photo.

6. How do holograms in cars help drivers?
A. They make driving more enjoyable.
B. They will help predict dangers and traffic.
C. They can control the car instead of drivers.
D. They help drivers find more road information easily.
7. What does the last paragraph tell us?
A. Holograms might be used in medical fields.
B. We can live in a 3D world earlier than expected.
C. Patients won’t suffer during treatment with holograms.
D. Doctors won’t make mistakes anymore with holograms.

Floods, droughts, storms, hot days…extreme (极端的) weather is becoming more and more common all over the world.
This is caused by greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放) from human activities, reported China Daily.
This summer big storms hit areas of Europe. At least 13 people had died in Austria, France and Italy by August 19th. In Portugal and Spain, huge wildfires have forced thousands to leave their homes.
In the US, more than 80 percent of the West is in drought, up from just 20 percent in 2021. Three-quarters of farmers in these areas have stopped growing food.

Extreme weather events are not only killing people and destroying homes, but also driving more people into hunger. Millions in East Africa have little food to eat today, according to the World Health Organization. For four years, there hasn’t been enough rain during its rainy seasons and the land has been too dry to grow food.
Extreme weather has also made 218 of the known 375 infectious diseases (传染病) more serious, including malaria (疟疾), cholera (霍乱) and anthrax (炭疽), according to the journal Nature Climate Change. As viruses try to adapt to (适应) higher temperatures, they become stronger and harder to kill.

B. The effects of extreme weather in different areas.
C. The number of people who died from extreme weather.
D. The countries which suffer from extreme weather the most.

A. Because the land is too dry to farm.
B. Because it didn’t rain at all this year.
C. Because wildfires destroyed their crops.
D. Because extreme weather killed many farmers.
10. How does extreme weather make diseases more serious?
A. It weakens people’s health.
B. It causes viruses to become stronger.
C. It increases the number of infectious diseases.
D. It offers more food to viruses and serious diseases.
11. What might the author write after the last paragraph?
A. How extreme weather happens.
B. What we can do to have less extreme weather.
C. The groups who get benefits from extreme weather.
D. The countries that are not affected by extreme weather.

Dear Wang Ping,
I’m sorry to hear that you are having problems with your parents because of using WeChat. In my opinion, communication is the key to solving the problem. Your parents may worry that spending too much time on WeChat will influence your studies. First, you should have a calm talk with them to break the ice. It is not wise to keep the “cold war”. Second, try to make a rule with your parents. You can promise to use WeChat only on weekends or for necessary communication. Most importantly, remember to ask for their permission before using it next time.
