The Arctic has long fascinated people across the world, so it’s no wonder that stories from this region have inspired movies and TV shows. Its frozen landscapes make the perfect setting for stories of survival, showcasing how both people and animals adapt to the ice and cold. Here are four of our favorite Arctic shows and movies.
Nanook of the North (1922)
This silent film from 1922 is a classic story of man versus (与…对抗) nature. It tells the story of an Inuit hunter named Nanook “The Bear” and his family as they struggle to survive in the harsh environment. Audiences also see how the Inuit construct igloos one block at a time into icy, domed structures.
Balto (1995)
Based on a true story, this animated (动画的)movie takes place when a deadly disease strikes the small town of Nome, Alaska, in 1925. I first encountered tai chi in Ottawa’s Chinatown. Men and women gathered in loose formation. Their actions combined to achieve a meditative (冥想的) dance. I was amazed by its beauty and grace. It was like watching a water lily opening.
Yet I couldn’t see the point. I could achieve my fitness goals from exercise classes, swimming and cycling — and moving so slowly didn’t seem to build muscle, my objective for all activities. I chose only to admire this martial art (武术) but kept my distance.
Years later, a recommendation from my doctor brought me to a training group for tai chi beginners led by a caring instructor. I had thought that my goal would be to master the 108 moves. Technically right, but wrong on so many counts.
The class was full of lovely people who glided effortlessly, seemingly never confused about where to move next. They assured me that they had been beginners once too, and that I would be able to remember all the moves within three or four years. Three to four years! Graduate degrees took less time. But I could see they were right. Commit and improve: That was the only path.
Another realization came to me when I attended an advanced class. We began with foundation exercises, and almost immediately, the instructor singled me out for instruction. To be singled out was an honour, but I was mortified. All the others in the class stopped and turned to watch me while the instructor corrected my positioning. “Don’t bend, “he said, and I repeated the movement. “Straighten your back, “he urged, and on it went — probably for only a few minutes, but it seemed like hours.
I couldn’t say, “Yeah, I get it.” I had to show that I did. I concentrated as I had never done before, listening to what the instructor was saying, watching his movement and then willing my body to move in imitation. I was unlearning and learning, overcoming awkwardness to focus. I realized that I was learning a new way of being in the world—truly listening and open to correction.
I don’t know that I will ever master the 108 moves. What I do know is that I have found an activity in my life where change and growth are not just possible but expected, even when my stubborn (固执的) personality tendencies re-emerge at every turn.

B. She stayed focused and followed attentively.

Israeli company Watergen has produced an appliance that can generate (生产)clean, drinkable water out of air. The device, called GENNY, is small enough to be used in a home or office but can generate up to 30 liters of water a day.
GENNY takes air in and passes it through a filter (过滤器)to remove dust and dirt. The filter is powerful enough to work even in areas with high air pollution. The air is directed through GENius, a heating and cooling process which causes water in the air to condense (凝结). This water is then passed through several more filters and minerals are added to improve the flavor of the water. Finally, the water is stored in a tank where it: is continually circulated to keep it fresh. Therefore, the water produced by GENNY is often of a higher quality than water running through filtration systems attached to the city’s water lines.
The technology of GENius is much better than other technologies that generate water from air. It produces four to five times more water per kilowatt-hour. Watergen has other products that use this same technology on a larger scale, the largest of which can produce up to 5,000 liters of water per day.
As an added bonus, during the water generation process; GENNY can emit clean air which is healthier for people to breathe.
At the 2020 Smart home mark of Excellence Awards at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, GENNY was named the Energy Efficient Product of the Year. The award series recognize the world’s top high-tech home products.
As a company, Watergen focuses on dealing with the global water shortage. Last year, Watergen’s large-scale products were donated to authorities in Brazil, Vietnam and India. They also assisted rescue and recovery efforts during the 2018 California wildfires and provided clean, safe water for the residents of Texas and Florida in the aftermath of the devastation caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
Watergen also seeks to help protect the environment by reducing waste generated by plastic water bottles. People are called upon to put the water from GEENY into reusable bottles so that plastic ones don’t get used and thrown away.
46. What does the author tell us in Paragraph 2?
A. How high-quality water is produced.
B. Air will condense through cooling process.
C. Drinkable water can be got directly from air.
D. Polluted water becomes drinkable through filter.
47. What does GENNY accomplish by adding minerals to.the water?
A. It keeps the water fresh. B. It helps kill harmful bacteria.
C. It makes the water taste better. D. It satisfies local water regulations.
48. Which of the following can-best describe GENius?
A. Time-saving. B. Energy-efficient.
C. Ground-breaking. D. Environment-friendly.
49. What does the underlined word “emit” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Blow away. B. Cut down.
C Use up. D. Give off.
50. What can Watergen do using its large-scale products?

Believe it or not, in early May, London’s annual Boring Conference celebrated its seven years of delighting in dullness. The Boring Conference is a one-day celebration of the dull, the ordinary, the obvious and the overlooked. Its subjects are often considered unimportant and pointless, but the tickets sold well. Previous speakers have included Jon Ronson, Robin Ince, Josie Long, Adam Curtis and Peter York.
Boredom is nothing new but it has surprisingly become quite interesting to psychologists lately. One widely accepted definition of boredom in psychology is “the unpleasant experience of wanting, but being unable to engage in satisfying activity.” It has been linked to behavior issues including inattentive driving, mindless snacking, addictive drinking and so on.
In fact, many of us would choose pain over boredom. One team of psychologists discovered that two-thirds of men and a quarter of women would rather self-administer (自我施行) electric shocks than sit alone with their thoughts for 15 minutes. To further prove this phenomenon, another team asked volunteers to watch boring, sad, or neutral (中性的) films, during which they could self-administer electric shocks. The result shows the bored volunteers shocked themselves more and harder than the sad or neutral ones did.
But boredom isn’t all bad. By encouraging self-reflection and daydreaming, it can stimulate activities. An early study gave participants abundant time to complete problem-solving and word-association exercises. Once all the obvious answers were exhausted, participants gave more and more creative answers to avoid boredom. A British study took these findings one step further, asking subjects to complete a creative challenge (coming up with a list of alternative uses for a household item). One group of subjects did a boring activity first, while the others went straight to the creative task. Those who did a boring activity first were more productive.
In our always connected world, boredom may be a hard-to-define state, but it can be helpful. Watch paint dry or water boil, or at least put away our smart phone for a while, and you might unlock your next big idea.
51. Which is true about Boring Conference?
A. It is held once a year. B. It lasts several days.
C. It is not well received. D. It focuses on important issues.
52. According to an accepted psychological definition, when will people experience boredom?
A. Taking an adventurous trip. B. Engaging in some interesting activities.
C. Enjoying the materials they are studying. D. Having no chance to do what they desire to.
53. What can boredom lead to?
A. Harmful behavior. B. Concentration. C. A sudden death. D. Determination.
54. What is the positive thing of boredom?
A. It improves memory. B. It allows time for relaxation.
C. It may promote creative thinking. D. It may inspire independent learning.
55. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A. Make full use of time. B. Stare blankly occasionally.
C. Work hard and dream big. D. Study with the help of a smart phone.

Some people live to climb the highest mountains. Some people live only dreaming about it while others live to avoid ever climbing at all. But one thing is certain, all people encounter mountains in their life.
When I was a little girl, my family moved to a tiny town at the bottom of a big mountain. One day after school, while exploring the green woods of this magnificent mountain, I almost fell on a set of stairs. What could these steps lead to? Curiosity got the best of me as I knew it would be starting to get dark soon. I started climbing up those strangely mysterious steps.
I climbed and climbed. There was nothing but just green bushes and these steps. I had to reach the top! But it was now getting real dark. If I kept going I might not be able to see my way back. My mom would be worried sick if I didn’t come home soon. So I ran back home almost in the dark while trying not to get too scared.
Anxiously I went to bed dreaming about what I would find at the top of this magical mountain. Could there be a castle up there? Maybe I would find a monster(怪物). Maybe I was taking the risk of never coming back home. Or, maybe all I would find was absolutely nothing! But something inside me was going to climb that mountain at all cost. I could hardly wait to try this adventure again.
Now we live in a world surrounded by the "can’t do" attitudes. We all fall down. We all have doubts and regrets. Still we must climb and dream about what’s at the top of our mountain. Monsters may appear or the night will fall. But never ever give up on your dream! Never let anyone tell you, "You can’t." Dream big and climb high!
56. What made the author start to climb up the stairs to the mountain top? (no more than 5 words)

Nanook of the North is one of the earliest documentaries — although some of the scenes were staged. Viewers are invited to witness how the Inuit people live. Audiences also see how the Inuit construct igloos one block at a time into icy, domed structures.
Balto (1995)
Based on a true story, this animated (动画的)movie takes place when a deadly disease strikes the small town of Nome, Alaska, in 1925. A half-wolf dog named Balto must lead a sled-dog team across the snowy expanse (宽阔区域)to deliver life-saving medicine to the town’s citizens hundreds of kilometers away. Balto is not only an inspiring true story but an important look at the difficulties of Arctic travel and the brave people — and animals — that are relied on to save the day when people need them most.
Arctic Tale (2007)
Arctic Tale is a US documentary film about the life of a polar bear and her cubs as well as a walrus and her calves. Footage (素材)used for the film was shot over a 15-year period. The documentary gives an inside look at how these.two Arctic animals grow from babies into adulthood as they learn how to hunt and survive in dangerous conditions. Throughout the film, the narrator reminds viewers that climate change is melting the Arctic ice and threatening the animals living there.
Ice Road Truckers (2007—2017)
This US reality TV series features truck drivers who must cross frozen lakes and rivers in remote Arctic land. They risk their lives to deliver much-needed supplies to small towns, diamond mines and offshore oil rigs (钻塔). The series highlights the dangers of working in the Arctic and subarctic (亚北极的), as well as the bravery it takes to battle the icy storms and freezing temperatures.

41. What was the author’s first impression of tai chi?
A. Pleasant to the eye but not of much use. B. Too slow to be regarded as a martial art.
C. Helpful in accomplishing fitness goals. D. Mysterious and difficult to master.
42. In the beginners’ class, the author realized that mastering tai chi required_________.

At the 2020 Smart home mark of Excellence Awards at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas GENNY was named the Energy Efficient Product of the Year.
A. Blow away. B. Cut down.
C. Use up. D. Give off.
50. What can Watergen do using its large-scale products?
A. Consume plastic waste. B. Test water quality globally.
C. Respond to natural disasters. D. Relieve drought in some countries.
D
A Taking an adventurous trip.

57. Why did the author hurry back home without reaching the top of the mountain? Give two reasons. (no more than 15 words)
