People casually describe themselves as people-pleasers as they might describe their hair color or music preference. However, people-pleasing can be a very real mental health problem, often associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (强迫症). Approval-seeking behavior is self-injuring by nature. To satisfy this obsession, we must be inauthentic and reduced versions of ourselves, overly vigilant of the preferences of others.
Essentially, the main cause is avoidance of causing distress in others. Few things make me shake more than a conflict. I see this behavior as a response to my childhood, which was filled with intense fear. My single parent had weekly moments of being angry and abusive. I learned early on that my safety depended on my mother’s view of me. So I began to predict what my mother wanted me to do and say. By the time I was in middle school, over-apologizing and shifting my personality to please others became firmly established in my social behavior.
For most adult people-pleasers, including me, it feels natural to cling on to (依赖) the comfort of agreeability. Even with my own children, I give up my own authority. I recently noticed that my voice takes on an awkward tone whenever I say “no”. I challenge and displease my clients, but only because it is demanded for effective progress.
People-pleasing is clearly holding me back; but what’s the reason for my unwillingness to let go? I am starting to realize that I am shying away from the unpredictability of how others will react. When I am universally likeable, I rarely have to go outside my comfort zone in interpersonal relationships. Authentic interactivity with others requires taking a risk. Displeased people are stressful.
So the key seems to be exposure. The more interactions I experience where I am not pleasing others, the more comfort I gain with this dynamic. As I practice saying “no,” my voice will naturally deepen. Confidence will come with repetition. Yes, people’s negative reactions are uncertain, but not dangerous. The less I people-please, the more I will welcome growth into my interpersonal relationships. The challenge of others is, in fact, a joyous opportunity.
4. What does the underlined word “vigilant” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Mindful. B. Tired. C. Fond. D. Uncertain.
5. Why does the author mention her childhood?
A. To share a pitiful story of her family.
B. To justify her approval-seeking behavior.
C. To emphasize the impact of family education.
D. To explain the reason for her pleasing tendency.
6. What prevents the author from getting rid of people-pleasing?
A. Her dislike of her authentic self. B. Her fear of facing uncertain reactions.
C. Her ignorance of interpersonal skills. D. Her misunderstanding of displeased people.
7. What does the author suggest to deal with people-pleasing?
A. Practice authenticity persistently. B. Be exposed to more people-pleasers.
C. Ignore people’s negative reactions. D. Seek comfort from existing relationships.

On Earth Day — April 22 — the XPrize Foundation, which holds contests that encourage people to come up with new ideas to solve big problems, announced the winners of its Carbon Removal contest. A company called Mati Carbon won the $50 million prize. Their method is simple, but it could remove huge amounts of carbon dioxide and also help farmers grow more food.
The company uses a very common kind of volcanic rock called basalt. Basalt is used worldwide to construct roads and buildings. Companies that break up the basalt often have a fine powder of basalt left over that they can’t use.
Luckily, this is exactly what Mati Carbon needs. The company removes carbon by spreading this rock powder on farm fields. The powder pulls CO2 out of the water in the soil and stores it in a way that will last for thousands of years. Mati’s method of carbon removal is called “enhanced rock weathering”.
The results aren’t just good for the environment — they’re also good for the farmers. Farmers who use the basalt powder on their fields grow roughly 25% more food. In areas with poor soil, farmers can grow as much as 70% more. Mati Carbon is already spreading basalt powder on farms in several countries, including India, Tanzania, and Zambia. The company is focused on working with small farmers in poorer countries, putting the powder on their farmlands for free. To pay for this, the company sells “carbon credits”. Since Mati Carbon is removing pollution, large companies that create pollution buy credits to “offset” their pollution so they can be “carbon neutral”.
One of the things that impressed the XPrize judges is how the company carefully tracks and records the impact it is having. So far, Mati Carbon has removed over 1,000 metric tons of CO2. But the company believes that number will grow rapidly. It is planning to begin work in three more countries soon and allow other companies to use its methods to reach even more areas.
8. What is the material used by the winning company?
A. Construction waste. B. Rare volcanic ashes.
C. Industrial product. D. Farm carbon dioxide.
9. Which words best describe Mati Carbon?
A. Newly-built and conserved. B. Far-sighted and aggressive.
C. Profit-driven and successful. D. Eco-minded and sympathetic.
10. What can we learn about Mati Carbon according to the last paragraph?
A. It has expanded its business across the world.
B. It has developed more methods to remove CO2.
C. It intends to share its patent with other companies.
D. It plans to invite XPrize judges to track its impact.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Joint Effort Pays off in Breaking up the Basalt B. Great Chance Exists in the Green Agriculture
C. Mati Carbon Has More Carbon Credits to Sell D. Powerful Idea Wins Carbon Removal XPrize
D
“Men are from Mars, women from Venus” has become a convenient shorthand for every household debate, from map-reading to loading the dishwasher. Yet beneath the jokes lies a serious question: are the two sexes born with fundamentally different wiring, or have we simply repeated the story until it feels true?
Two high-profile sets of scans appear to offer hard proof of a difference. British psychologist Stuart Ritchie reported in 2012 that male brains are, on average, roughly one-tenth heavier than female brains and contain more white-matter. Three years later, Israeli neuroscientist Daphna Joel added that typical “his” or “her” circuits can be detected with advanced software, even though every head ultimately contains a mix of both — like shades that vary — and never perfectly match passport sex.
Lise Eliot, a neuroscientist at Chicago Medical School, believes such headlines are too dramatic. After re-analyzing thousands of images collected across six countries, she calls the brain “a unisex (不分性别的) organ”. The numeric gap between group averages, she insists, is no wider than the difference between male and female kidneys, and the figures fail to predict how the organ actually processes algebra, empathy or parking instructions. Put simply, size decides nothing.
If body structure is not the real boss, what is? Social experience, argues The Atlantic Classic papers loved eye-catching numbers: a 1970 survey showed boys beating girls thirteen-to-one on the mathematics SAT, a figure once highlighted by former Harvard president Lawrence Summers as proof of natural male scientific talent. When later student groups offered girls equal laboratory hours, encouraged female teachers and rewrote textbooks to include more real-world problems, the ratio fell to three-to-one, suggesting that opportunity, not body part, writes most of the scoreboard.
Margaret McCarthy, a neuropharmacologist at the University of Maryland, applauds Eliot for “forcing the debate forward”. She also notes that wiping out every sex difference would sound an extreme note. Equal, she reminds us, is not identical; biology may still whisper where society shouts.
12. Why does the author mention Ritchie and Joel?
A To stress the risk of inadequate datasets. B. To correct statistical errors in psychology.
C. To provide scan proof of a sex difference. D. To explain boys’ advantage in reading maps.
13. What is implied by Eliot’s re-analysis of brain volume?
A. Males do well in tackling complex tasks. B. Generation gaps outrun between-sex gaps.
C. Brain size can somehow decide sex rules. D. Brain size cannot tell how a person perform.
14. What can we infer from the falling math score gap after 1970?
A. Equal chances narrow the score gap. B. Standardized tests are no longer trusted.
C. Boys are now losing interest in STEM. D. Biology still limits girls’ physics scores.
15. What might be McCarthy’s attitude to erasing sex differences?
A. Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent.

Nostalgia — the warm feeling of longing for the past— is everywhere in today’s culture. Movies like Barbie, Indiana Jones, and Top Gun are drawing huge crowds by bringing back old favorites. ____16____
On the surface, nostalgia simply makes us feel good. ____17____ According to Professor Ziyan Yang from the Institute of Psychology, CAS, nostalgia creates feelings of warmth, belonging, and even a mental escape to the past. During tough times — whether personal struggles or global crises — nostalgia acts like an emotional safety net. Movies and music are powerful triggers because they recreate familiar emotions and experiences.
____18____ First, it gives us a sense of control. Even when life feels unpredictable, reflecting on our past helps us feel more grounded and secure. Second, nostalgia strengthens social bonds. Though it seems like a personal experience, nostalgic memories often remind us of family, friends, and shared moments.
What does nostalgia do to our brains? Mostly good things! Studies show it boosts happiness, creativity, and energy by activating positive emotions. ____19____ This youthful optimism encourages us to take risks and chase our goals. Some researchers suggest nostalgia acts like a “psychological immune system”, helping us cope with stress.
But can too much nostalgia be harmful? In small amounts, it’s healthy. However, if we think about the past too much, it can keep us from moving forward. The key is balance — enjoying memories without losing sight of the present. ____20____ It helps us reconnect with our true selves and remember who we really are.
In short, nostalgia isn’t just about reliving the past — it’s a tool that helps us navigate the present and future with hope.
A. But why do we love nostalgia so much?
B. This is why reunions feel so meaningful to us.
C. Nostalgia also serves key psychological needs.
D. However, psychology experts say there’s more to it.
E. It can even make us feel younger and more optimistic.
F. Remembering happy memories brings comfort and joy.
G. Still, in general, nostalgia is a natural and positive part of life.

On the afternoon of my eighteenth birthday, I was driving around the quiet streets of our small town, feeling absolutely free and excited. I’d just got my driver’s license the week before, and this was my first time driving alone without my dad in the passenger seat. The sun was shining, and the radio hummed with my favorite pop song. Everything felt perfect, like I was finally stepping into adulthood.
As I approached the corner of Maple Street, I made a turn a bit too quickly, and that’s when the worst thing happened. There was a loud, sharp sound of metal scraping against metal — screech, crunch — that made my teeth ache. I applied pressure to the brakes so hard that my body jolted forward against the safety belt. My heart jumped into my throat — I had sideswiped a polished, black Mercedes-Benz parked neatly by the pavement, its paint glittering like it had just been washed.
I killed the engine and sat there for a minute, my hands shaking on the wheel. Unbuckled my seatbelt, I steeled myself to get out of the car to inspect the damage. The street was completely empty, not a soul in sight — no neighbors watering their lawns, no kids riding bikes, no passing cars. A powerful, selfish thought rushed into my head: “Just drive away. No one saw you. No one will ever know.”
I ran a hand over the Mercedes’ door, frowning at the long, deep scratch that snaked all its way on the door. My own car, the old Ford, only had a tiny dent (凹陷) on the side mirror, barely noticeable. Panic seized me as I thought about the money I’d been saving for months — babysitting jobs, mowing lawns, working weekends at the grocery store — all saved up for my first semester of college textbooks and dorm supplies. I knew that repair bill would wipe that savings account clean in an instant. The temptation to jump back in the car and speed off was overwhelming, a heavy weight pressing down on my chest.
1. 写作词数应为150左右;
But then, I closed my eyes and pictured my dad’s face.

For most adult people-pleasers including me, it feels natural to cling on to (依赖) the comfort of agreeability.
A 5. D 6. B 7. A

根据划线词上文“However, people-pleasing can be a very real mental health problem, often associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (强迫症).(然而,讨好型人格可能是一个切实存在的心理健康问题,且往往与强迫症相关)”以及“To satisfy this obsession, we must be inauthentic and reduced versions of ourselves, overly(为了满足这种执念,我们必须伪装自己,变成不真实的、简化版的自己,变得过于……)” 故选A。
根据第二段“Essentially, the main cause is avoidance of causing distress in others. Few things make me shake more than a conflict. I see this behavior as a response to my childhood, which was filled with intense fear. My single parent had weekly moments of being angry and abusive. I learned early on that my safety depended on my mother’s view of me. So I began to predict what my mother wanted me to do and say.(从根本上说,主要原因在于避免给他人带来痛苦。没有什么比冲突更能让我感到不安了。在我看来,这种行为是对我童年经历的一种反应,因为我的童年充满了极度的恐惧。我的单亲母亲每周都会有发怒和施暴的时候。我很早就明白,我的安全取决于母亲对我的看法。所以我就开始预测母亲希望我做什么、说什么)”可知,作者提及她的童年经历是为了解释她这种讨好性格的成因。故选D。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“People-pleasing is clearly holding me back; but what’s the reason for my unwillingness to let go? I am starting to realize that I am shying away from the unpredictability of how others will react.(讨好型人格显然在阻碍着我;但我不愿意放手的原因究竟是什么呢?我开始意识到自己在逃避面对他人反应的不确定性)”可知,导致作者无法摆脱讨好他人这一行为的原因是她害怕面对可能出现的不确定反应。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“So the key seems to be exposure. The more interactions I experience where I am not pleasing others, the more comfort I gain with this dynamic. As I practice saying “no,” my voice will naturally deepen. Confidence will come with repetition. Yes, people’s negative reactions are uncertain, but not dangerous.(所以关键似乎在于多进行一些不讨好他人的交流经历。我经历的这类不愉快的互动越多,就越能适应这种局面。随着我学会说“不”,我的声音也会自然而然地变得低沉。通过不断练习,自信也会随之而来。没错,人们负面的反应难以预料,但并不危险)”可知,作者建议讨好型人格的人坚持做真实的自己。故选A。

A. To stress the risk of inadequate datasets.
C 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据第二段中的“Two high-profile sets of scans appear to offer hard proof of a difference. British psychologist Stuart Ritchie reported in 2012 that male brains are, on average, roughly one-tenth heavier than female brains and contain more white-matter. Three years later, Israeli neuroscientist Daphna Joel added that typical “his” or “her” circuits can be detected with advanced software, even though every head ultimately contains a mix of both — like shades that vary — and never perfectly match passport sex.(两项备受关注的扫描研究似乎为这种性别差异提供了确凿证据。
根据第三段中的“she insists, is no wider than the difference between male and female kidneys, and the figures fail to predict how the organ actually processes algebra, empathy or parking instructions. Put simply, size decides nothing.(她坚称,这种群体平均值之间的数值差距,并不比男女肾脏的差异更大,而且这些数据无法预测大脑这一器官实际处理代数运算、共情或停车指引的能力。简而言之,体积大小说明不了任何问题)”可知,埃利奥特的重新分析暗示,大脑体积无法判断一个人的能力表现。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“a 1970 survey showed boys beating girls thirteen-to-one on the mathematics SAT, a figure once highlighted by former Harvard president Lawrence Summers as proof of natural male scientific talent. When later student groups offered girls equal laboratory hours, encouraged female teachers and rewrote textbooks to include more real-world problems, the ratio fell to three-to-one, suggesting that opportunity, not body part, writes most of the scoreboard.(1970 年的一项调查显示,在学术能力评估测试(SAT)的数学科目中,男生和女生的得分比达到了 13:1。这一数据曾被哈佛前校长劳伦斯・萨默斯援引,作为男性天生具备科研天赋的佐证。后来,相关学生团体为女生提供了同等时长的实验室使用机会、鼓励女教师投身教学,还重新编写教材融入更多现实问题,这一得分比例便降至了 3:1。这一变化表明,决定成绩高低的关键因素是机会,而非生理结构)”可知,1970年后数学成绩差距缩小的现象,能让我们推断出平等的机会可以缩小分数差距。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“She also notes that wiping out every sex difference would sound an extreme note. Equal, she reminds us, is not identical; biology may still whisper where society shouts.(她还指出,消除所有性别差异的说法听起来有些极端。她提醒我们,平等并不等同于完全相同;在社会因素占主导的领域之外,生理因素的影响或许依然存在)”可知,麦卡锡认为消除所有性别差异的观点过于极端,由此可推断她对这一做法的态度是不赞成的。故选B项。

【答案】例文
Dear Jenny,
I’m writing to share with you a memorable incident that happened last week.
In the International Cultural Exchange Program, I was in charge of hosting a British student named Tom on behalf of our school. While having dinner in the canteen, I prepared some Chinese specialty dishes, like braised pork and roast duck. To show my hospitality, I kept piling food onto his plate, hoping he would like it. He hesitated for a long time before taking it awkwardly. Later, I learned that Westerners would rather help themselves than be served like this.
It was not until then that I realized cultural differences really matter in communication. We had better learn more about others’ customs to avoid such misunderstandings.
Have you ever had such interesting stories? Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

1. 写作词数应为150左右;
But then, I closed my eyes and pictured my dad’s face.

I found a piece of paper and a pen in the car glove box.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But then, I closed my eyes and pictured my dad’s face. The one he got when he’d taught me to ride a bike and I’d fallen and wanted to quit, or when I’d lied about breaking his favorite cup as a kid. He’d always told me, “Integrity isn’t about doing the right thing when someone’s watching — it’s about doing it when no one is.” Taking a deep breath, I calmed myself down and resolved to do the right thing. I needed to leave a note with my contact information so that the car owner could reach me.
I found a piece of paper and a pen in the car glove box. With my fingers still trembling, I scribbled down my name, phone number, and a sincere apology, and then tucked the note under the Mercedes’s windscreen wiper. I breathed a sigh of relief. The sun was still shining, but the overwhelming nervousness was gone — replaced instead with a quiet, steady pride. I climbed back into the Ford, fired up the engine, and headed home ready to tell my dad everything, steeling myself to face the consequences of my mistake. After all, honesty is always the best policy.
