Zhai Yuliang becomes extra busy whenever the holidays are around the corner. The Beijinger, in his 60s, has just finished a pair of palace lanterns for a courtyard home in the capital.

"The owner wants every part of them to be done in the old-fashioned way, so that they will fit perfectly with the grand style of their historical house." says Zhai, who has practiced the craft for more than four decades. One of the most popular styles, which is also Zhai's favorite, is the double-layered octagonal(八角形的) palace lantern. It's full of Chinese elements, and features dragon heads and many other specific patterns.

However, he stresses the essential elements to be classified as pa lace lanterns ——hand-painted scenes and Chinese knots as decoration. Most importantly, they must be created using the specific techniques, which require over 100 steps.

To make a palace lantern, a single craftsman had to do everything from the woodwork to the painting. "It takes months to make a palace lantern,"Zhai says. "It requires the skills of a woodworker, the knowledge of a mechanic, an appreciation of classical architecture, poetry, painting and an additional talent for mortise-and-tenon joints(榫卯) by hand before they can create the right carvings and layer combinations.

Zhai has received many invitations from communities and institutes to show the charm of palace lanterns. He particularly enjoys hosting workshops where he teaches people to make lanterns themselves. He is enchanted to see the smiles of children and the expressions of adults when they complete their works under his guidance.

He believes his lifelong devotion to this craft has been worthwhile. His lanterns can be seen in such locations as the Tian' anmen Square and many overseas sites that promote friendship with China. "Wherever you are, when you see page number 0

I love my smartphone — it's my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices and truly communicate with others.

On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule — no laptops, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.

Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There's a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There's no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.

The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course material and the class discussion.

I've been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversations and challenges, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.

I'm not saying that I won't ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I'm sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

8.Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with ____.

A.discussion topics B.the course material

C.the author's class rule D.others' misuse of technology

9.What does the underlined word "engage" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A.Accept. B.Explore. C.Change. D.Reject.

10.According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may ____.

A.affect students' concentration on course evaluations

B.encourage students to have in—depth conversations

C.help students to better understand complex themes

D.keep students from doing independent thinking

11.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.The author is quite stubborn.

B.The author will give up teaching history.

C.The author will change his teaching plan soon.

D.The author values technology-free dialogue in his class.

Begun 30 years ago, the Kubuqi desert greening project has succeeded in not only controlling the fast growth of the seventh-largest desert in China, about the size of Kuwait, but also turning about 6,000 square kilometers of the desert — one-third of it — green.

The desert lies about 800 kilometers to the west of Beijing in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region (自治区) and the greening efforts have also controlled desertification (沙漠化) in the rest of the area.

The project, which began about 30 years ago, can be looked to as an example of efforts to advance green development, in order to create harmony between humans and nature, and leave a better environment for future generations.

The success of the project, which has been praised by the UN Environment Programme as an "eco-pioneer", sets an example for successful desertification control and ecosystem improvement based on effective government policies, page number 1

supported by investment (投资) in the eco-industry and combined with the efforts of local farmers. These three aspects are key to the success of the "Kubuqi model".

Elion, a private ecology (生态) and investment company, has invested about 38billion yuan ($5.82 billion) in the Kubuqi desert-greening project since 1988 helping to lift about 102,000 local farmers out of poverty. For example, the locals grow a drought-tolerant (耐旱) plant, Chinese licorice, which is the most used herb in traditional Chinese medicine. The plant helps enrich the desert soil, with the bacteria around the roots of the plants producing nitrogen(氮气).   Besides, Cistanche, another type of drought-tolerant herb, was introduced after the successful planting of licorice. Under the company's guidance and with the local government's support, the local people benefit from the   "environmental wealth".

More companies should be encouraged to apply the "Kubuqi model" in other desert control projects in Inner Mongolia and neighboring Gansu province, where the climate conditions are similar but not quite the same, so as to further gain experience and enrich the model in practice. Showing it can be successfully applied in other areas will help promote the model worldwide.

12.What do we know about the Kubuqi greening project?

A.It increases the areas of desert.

B.It has turned all of the desert green.

C.It has achieved satisfying results.

D.It is applied all over the world.

13.Which is NOT the reason for the success of the   "Kubuqi model"?

A.Efforts of local farmers.

B.Government policies' support.

C.Investment in the eco-industry.

D.Help from the UN Environment Programme.

14.How does the author develop paragraph 5?

A.By following the time order. B.By giving examples.

C.By giving a definition (定义). D.By making comparisons.

15.What is the author's attitude towards the greening project?

A.Negative. B.Doubtful. C.Supportive. D.Indifferent.

二、阅读理解 第二节

The 80/20 rule is the principle that 20% of what you do results in 80% of your outcomes. 16.       Because so much of your output is determined by a relatively small amount of what you do each day, focusing on the most productive tasks will result in greater output.

You can't use the 80/20 rule to your advantage unless you know what it is you want to focus on. How do you cut out all the background noise and zero in on that 20% that's going to make an extraordinary difference in your life? 17.

Your purpose is the foundation of everything in your life or in your business. 18.       It's that important. Your purpose could be something like having more time with your family, the freedom to live life on your terms, or the money to travel the world. In business, your purpose is your company vision. It's the reason you started the business in the first place.

 19.       Write down five things you could start doing today to help you get to live your purpose. Then prioritize them by how fast they will get you to your goal. The top item — the most meaningful — is your first priority.

You're not done yet. Priorities are nice, but they're not enough to get you over the finish line. You need to create SMART goals: steps you can take that are specific, measurable, Achievable, Realistic and set within a Time Frame. 20.       These specific action items are the real 20% of the 80/20 rule — the things you'll spend 20% of your time doing that will generate the best results.

A. Now it's time to get more specific.

B. It explains why focusing on key tasks matters.

C. Rank your purposes by the level of importance.

D. You can apply the principle to your personal goals.

E. Then you need to hold yourself accountable for them.

F. Follow this equation: Purpose + Priority = Productivity.

G. If you don't know your purpose, you can't create goals or take action.
