It began with a fondness for Garfield and his adventures, and led to the discovery of a range of comic books like Champak, Tintin, and Archie. They enabled me to enjoy myself in a world without iPads and the Internet ― just like so many of my friends who were fond of reading. While my access to comics as a child was limited to what was printed in the newspaper, this changed once I grew older and started visiting bookstores to buy the books that I wanted to read. Having grown up on a diet of image-heavy books, I found the idea of reading text-only novels quite formidable. As I searched for books that lay somewhere in between, I came across a copy of Bhimayana ― a graphic novel. It felt familiar due to its comic-like theme and design. Plus, understanding complex narratives through pictures was relatively easier and more fun. And so, as I grew older, I found myself transitioning towards graphic novels from childish comic books. Graphic novels dealt with serious topics in a more engaging manner. They would literally show me what was going on. For example when I was reading Joe Sacco’s Palestine, I didn’t have to imagine the ruin caused by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I could actually see it while reading about it. Fast-forward a few years to when I was given a copy of Jonathan Bloomfield’s Palestine: A Novel. Though I was impressed by the compelling (扣人心弦的) nature of storytelling in his book, I am not sure if I would have been able to visualize and enjoy his text-only version so much had I not read Sacco’s Palestine first. Thanks to the graphic novel, I had a “picture” of whatever had happened, and that made it easier and more fun to understand the details of the overall story. From black and white strips and colorful comic books to illustrated graphic novels, this type of storytelling has come a long way. While my romance with comic books is still ongoing, in the long run, my love for graphic novels is more substantial and here to stay. 4. Why did the author turn to comic books as a child? A. He found comic books interesting. B. He had limited access to other books. C. He wanted to be different from his friends. D. He could relax from reading text-only books. 5. Which word can best explain the underlined word “formidable” in paragraph 2? A. Acceptable. B. Natural. C. Scary. D. Appealing. 6. What does the author say about reading Sacco’s Palestine? A. It encouraged him to read more text-only novels. B. It improved his understanding of Bloomfield’s book. C. It introduced him to a compelling style of storytelling. D. It changed his attitude to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. 7. What does the author mainly talk about in the passage? A. Comic books are more than comic. B. Why he loves reading graphic novels. C. Why he turned to serious novels eventually. D. Picture books are here to stay for many reasons. C Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams? Previous studies have shown that exercise can help stimulate the areas of the brain that convert (转换) new information into long-term memory. A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning. Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental function, scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning. Participants — 72 healthy male and female adults — were first asked to perform a computer test that challenged their visual and spatial learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them also exercised. Half of the exercisers did circuit training on an exercise bike for 35 minutes immediately after the test. The other half did the same exercise but not until four hours after they had been tested. Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test, and they were connected to MRI (磁共振成像) machines to assess their brain activity. The participants who exercised four hours after taking the computer test were able to recall what they had learned most accurately. Their brainwaves also showed more consistent levels of activity, indicating that their brains were less taxed to remember what they had learned. According to this research, the best time to exercise to improve learning is four hours after studying. But why? That’s one question the researchers have yet to answer. Another question left unanswered is the level of exercise that might best improve learning. I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout. But the researchers noted that light workouts might not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost to improve learning. 8. What did the new study aim to explore? A. When exercise is best for learning. B. What biochemicals are good for health. C. How brainwaves should be measured. D. Which area of the brain is the most active. 9. What were all the participants asked to do during the experiment? A. Train on bicycles. B. Do mathematics exercises. C. Play computer games. D. Watch films about nature. 10. Why did the participants return to the lab two days later? A. To do a medical examination. B. To have their memory tested. C. To get their workouts recorded. D. To finish their previous tasks. 11. What might the author’s marathon running prove? A. The findings of the study are reliable. B. Long-distance runners are often smart. C. Studies on the marathon are not enough. D. Hard exercise may not sharpen the brain. D Ponds are a rich source of biodiversity, providing natural environments for many rare and endangered species, including plants, insects, birds and bats. Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams. Yet, for a century or so, ponds have been ignored by scientists. Why have we overlooked such a significant part of the natural world? A key reason appears to be the cognitive bias (认知偏见) where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important. Rather than study ponds, biologists in the past typically headed for the largest lake or river they could find. Most of us also devalue ponds because we assume they are human-made habitats and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient origin. Ponds have clearly existed on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have been a long-lasting presence. Ignoring ponds within science has had a big impact on our ability to protect their wildlife. It has created a world view in which policy-makers can simply ignore the big networks of ponds that make up so much of the global water environment. In Europe, for example, the Water Framework Directive mostly excludes any bodies of water smaller than 50 hectares. Fortunately, views are changing. Last year, the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, introduced a resolution (决议) on small wetlands, including ponds, giving more recognition to them. And the European Union-funded PONDERFUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds. However, if we want to make use of the biodiversity power that ponds offer, there remains much to do. In a world where fresh water faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological engineering we can easily achieve to help support biodiversity. 12. What can be learned about ponds from paragraph 1? A. They are difficult to research. B. They fail to get due attention. C. They are too small to support wildlife. D. They have greater importance than rivers. 13. What does the cognitive bias assume? A. Ponds are short-lived. B. Rivers are fully-developed. C. Small things are unimportant. D. Natural habitats are unnoticed. 14. Why is the Water Framework Directive mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To solve a problem. B. To present a fact. C. To prove a point. D. To make a comparison. 15. What does the author imply in the last paragraph? A. Exploring ponds has a long way to go. B. Ecological diversity is easy to realize. C. Fresh water supply can meet our needs. D. Building ponds can promote economy. Forget privacy, young internet users want to be tracked On every smartphone there sits a tracker’s paradise (乐园) of location data ready to be shared. ____16____ And this tech is marketed as convenient, not frightening. What is an acceptable level of online surveillance (监视)? I had assumed we all agreed that the ideal was none. ____17____ A quick enquiry on my friends found that those who were, like me, in their 40s and older either had no idea they could use their phone in this way or had relatively little interest in doing so. But friends a decade or so younger all seem to be tracking one another at will. They don’t find the idea of monitoring or being monitored in this way upsetting. They say it makes them feel safer. ____18____ It is just that they are realistic about the privacy that is available. They know that if you own a smartphone and don’t want to disable useful things like maps, then your location is already being watched. If app creators, smartphone makers and ad companies are already tracking your location, then why not share the information with people you know? If you want to start tracking the people you know, then there are some rules involved. It’s fine to use tracking to check that a friend has got home safely at the end of a night out, for example, but not to surprise them on the street. And think carefully about whom you share data with. ____19____ Location tracking as a safety measure, particularly for elderly parents and children, is appealing. ____20____ Once you grow comfortable sharing your location with your family and friends, perhaps one day you’ll be happy to share it with your employer or even government agencies. A. It is for family and close friends only, not new dates. B. But the truth is how popular it is depends on your age. C. Location sharing has been around for more than a decade. D. The risk is that if you do it too often, it will be hard to turn around. E. After all no one will find it comfortable to be watched all the time. F. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor, and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique (古董), which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back in its place. As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks (裂纹) that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he had broken the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away, no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea. Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished, but, as he had already lied, he decided to deny everything, no matter how angry his mum became. In the study calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one. The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 包九中外国语学校高一年级英语学科调研卷 (2025年3月) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30 分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 How much is the shirt? Having grown up on a diet of image-heavy books, I found the idea of reading text-only novels quite formidable. As I searched for books that lay somewhere in between, I came across a copy of Bhimayana ― a graphic novel. It felt familiar due to its comic-like theme and design. Plus, understanding complex narratives through pictures was relatively easier and more fun. And so, as I grew older, I found myself transitioning towards graphic novels from childish comic books. Graphic novels dealt with serious topics in a more engaging manner. They would literally show me what was going on. For example, when I was reading Joe Sacco’s Palestine, I didn’t have to imagine the ruin caused by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A 5. C 6. B 7. 根据第一段“It began with a fondness for Garfield and his adventures, and led to the discovery of a range of comic books like Champak, Tintin, and Archie. They enabled me to enjoy myself in a world without iPads and the Internet ― just like so many of my friends who were fond of reading.(这一切始于对加菲猫及其冒险的喜爱,由此我发现了一系列漫画书,如《Champak》、《丁丁历险记》和《阿奇漫画》。它们让我在没有iPad和互联网的世界里享受乐趣——就像我的许多喜欢阅读的朋友一样)”可知,作者小时候喜欢漫画书是因为他觉得它们很有趣。故选A项。 根据划线词所在句“While my access to comics as a child was limited to what was printed in the newspaper, this changed once I grew older and started visiting bookstores to buy the books that I wanted to read. Having grown up on a diet of image-heavy books, I found the idea of reading text-only novels quite formidable. (当我还是个孩子的时候,我接触到的漫画仅限于报纸上印刷的内容,但当我长大后开始去书店买我想读的书时,这种情况就改变了。由于我是看着满是图片的书长大的,所以我觉得只读文字的小说这个想法很______。)”以及后文“As I searched for books that lay somewhere in between, I came across a copy of Bhimayana ― a graphic novel.(当我在寻找介于两者之间的书籍时,我偶然发现了一本《Bhimayana》——一本图像小说)”可知,作者从小接触的是满是图片的漫画书,所以当接触到只有文字的小说时,会觉得有些可怕或难以接受,因此才会去寻找介于两者之间的图像小说。 根据第四段“Though I was impressed by the compelling (扣人心弦的) nature of storytelling in his book, I am not sure if I would have been able to visualize and enjoy his text-only version so much had I not read Sacco’s Palestine first. Thanks to the graphic novel, I had a ‘picture’ of whatever had happened, and that made it easier and more fun to understand the details of the overall story. (虽然我被他书中扣人心弦的故事讲述所吸引,但如果我先没有读过Sacco的《Palestine》,我不确定我是否能够如此生动地想象并享受他的纯文本版本。多亏了这本图像小说,我对所发生的事情有了“画面”,这让我更容易也更有趣地理解整个故事的细节)”可知,作者认为读过Sacco的《Palestine》后,他能够更好地理解和享受Bloomfield的纯文本小说。故选B项。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是根据最后一段“From black and white strips and colorful comic books to illustrated graphic novels, this type of storytelling has come a long way. While my romance with comic books is still ongoing, in the long run, my love for graphic novels is more substantial and here to stay. (从黑白条幅、彩色漫画书到插图图像小说,这种讲故事的方式已经走过了很长的路。虽然我对漫画书的热爱仍在继续,但从长远来看,我对图像小说的热爱更加深厚,并将持续下去)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者为什么喜欢阅读图像小说。故选B项。 C Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams? Previous studies have shown that exercise can help stimulate the areas of the brain that convert (转换) new information into long-term memory. A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning. Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental function scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning. 10 Why did the participants return to the lab two days later? A 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning.(一项新的研究更进一步,找到了锻炼有助于最大化学习效果的最佳时间)”可知,新研究旨在探索什么时候锻炼最有利于学习。故选A项。 根据第三段中“After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries(测试后,所有受试者都观看了自然纪录片)”可知,实验要求所有受试者在实验过程中观看自然纪录片。 根据第四段中“Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test(两天后,所有参与者返回实验室进行回忆测试)”可知,参与者两天后返回实验室是为了进行记忆测试。 根据最后一段中“I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout.(我已经跑了足够多的马拉松来证明这样一个事实:在艰苦的锻炼过程中或之后,我的大脑一点也不敏锐)”可知,作者通过自己跑马拉松的经历证明,剧烈的锻炼可能不会使大脑变得敏锐。故选D项。 D Ponds are a rich source of biodiversity, providing natural environments for many rare and endangered species, including plants, insects, birds and bats. 12. B 13. C 14. C 15. ____19____ Location tracking as a safety measure particularly for elderly parents and children, is appealing. D. Known 37. to honor 38. have played 39. a 40. enabling 41. which 42. recognition 43. its 44. to 45. basically 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。 故填to honor。 故填have played。 故填a。 分析句子可知,此处为非限制性定语从句,先行词为前面的整个句子“On the global scale, China has put more effort than any other country”,在从句中充当主语,所以应用关系代词which引导。故填which。 故填its。 故填to。 __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: Dear Fred, I’m taking part in an international English speech contest for middle school students and I’m writing to seek help from you. In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Ben’s face turned red as he stared at the chocolate in his hand. His mother gently touched his head and continued, “You glued the vase carefully, which shows you truly cared about making things right.” She paused, her eyes warm and understanding. “But imagination should help us solve problems, not hide from them.” Ben bit his lip, realizing his mother had known the truth all along. Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. He took a deep breath and whispered, “Mom, I’m sorry. I broke the vase while playing basketball and lied to you.” His mother smiled softly, “I’m proud of you for telling the truth. Mistakes happen, but honesty is more precious than any antique.” She handed him another chocolate, “Let’s fix it together tomorrow, okay?” Ben nodded, holding the chocolate tightly, grateful for his mother’s wisdom and love. 2.续写线索: 母亲用巧克力回应谎言——指出问题所在——Ben态度转变并主动承认错误——母亲接纳并提议共同解决——Ben感受到了母亲的关爱与智慧 词汇激活 行为类 ①盯着:stare at/gaze at ②意识到:realize/be aware of ③发生:happen/occur ④修理:fix/repair 情感类 ①温柔的:gentle/tender ②温暖的:warm/affectionate ③感激的:grateful/thankful 【点睛】[高分句型1] His mother gently touched his head and continued, “You glued the vase carefully, which shows you truly cared about making things right.”(运用了which引导的非限制性定语从句,修饰You glued the vase carefully整个句子) [高分句型2] Ben bit his lip, realizing his mother had known the truth all along.(运用了现在分词短语作伴随状语,且其中包含省略了引导词that的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
