science fiction(科幻小说). But what makes it so popular?
For one thing, science fiction gives us a chance to imagine what our future will be like. Anything is possible. We can dream big. Some people think there will be flying cars and robot servants(仆人). Others believe we will learn more about strange aliens and other worlds.
Another reason is that sci-fi writers and their work can inspire us to create the future. In 1945, a sci-fi author(作者)named Arthur C. Clarke wrote about a system of space stations. In the article, he predicted the earth of the future would have many TV stations and people would send TV programmes around the world. However, this was before TV was a common item at home! In a short story by Clarke, he suggested people in the future would use a system to talk with others around the world. Amazingly, the short story was actually the inspiration for the internet!
Science fiction is also popular because it can make us think about our world in new ways. Although many sci-fi stories are set in imaginary worlds or societies, they can help us better understand the real world. They can also make us excited when we feel like we are living in a boring world.
What will the future be like? Sci-fi inspires us and helps us to understand what it could be like.
( )48. Who predicted TV stations and the internet?
A. A famous scientist. B. A movie star. C. A sci-fi writer. D. A teacher.
( )49. The underlined word “inspire” in the passage means ______ in Chinese.
- 阻碍 B. 启发 C. 模仿 D. 娱乐
( )50. What makes science fiction so popular?
- It helps us to imagine the future. B. It helps us to create the future.
C. It helps us to think about the world . D. Above all .

Many people believe that by the year 2100, we will live on Mars(火星). Here is what life could be like.
First, transportation should be much better. In 2100, spaceships can travel very fast. 51
Second, humans need food, water and air to live. Scientists should be able to find plants that can grow on Mars. These plants will give us food and air.
52 We might easily jump too high and fly away into space. So humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier.
Life on Mars will be better in many ways. 53 It is possible to live in a large building with many bedrooms. Then, robots will do most of the housework, so we have more time for hobbies.
54 Every student can study and do his or her homework on the computer and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have his or her own online teacher called“e-teacher”.However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on earth today. 55 Meals will probably be in the shape of pills(药丸)and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel sick.
