For 11-year-old chess talent Reyaansh Chakrabarty, the Netflix show The Queen’s Gambit (《后翼弃兵》) started his love for chess. During the pandemic (流行病), he watched the show, which aroused his interest in chess.
From Western Sydney, Reyaansh, a FIDE master with a 2346 classical rating, has excited Australia’s chess world. Australian Chess Federation’s Paul Power said that Reyaansh shows great promise at a young age, adding that Australia has only 10 Grandmasters (GMs) worldwide and that though it’s hard to predict, Reyaansh is on the right way to possibly get a GM title, which would be a great honor for Australia.
Reyaansh wants to do more than become a Grandmaster — he dreams of being world champion. Though it’s a huge goal, he focuses on improving step by step. As a Year 6 student, he trains five hours each day and eight hours on weekends. His school supports his chess by giving less homework, but he still puts his studies first.
He practices tactics and openings strictly, looking for mistakes in his games, and has face-to-face classes with Polish GM Jacek Stopa at the Sydney Chess Academy. Reyaansh said that Stopa teaches him the careful preparation needed for the GM level and that the puzzles he gives are very hard, making him tired after each class.
Reyaansh has already beaten GMs, including Australian player Darryl Johansen in Melbourne. His first GM win happened when his opponent blundered in a game that was going to end in a draw. He has played in countries like Norway and Singapore and balances chess with reading books by JK Rowling and Dog Man comics.
When talking about what makes chess special, Reyaansh pointed out the game’s intensity, saying that even a game played perfectly can be lost with one mistake. Mr. Power saw more young players joining in, saying the lively interest among primary students is refreshing. Reyaansh’s main advice for others is to find love for the game, because without it, one would get bored.
4. What drew Reyaansh’s interest in chess?
A. A pandemic-related activity. B. A fictional character’s story.
C. A family tradition. D. A local chess competition.
5. What excited Australia’s chess world?
A. Reyaansh’s high rating. B. Reyaansh’s love for chess.
C. Reyaansh’s young age D. Reyaansh’s victory in Melbourne.
6. What can we infer about Reyaansh from paragraph 3?
A. He prioritizes chess over schoolwork. B. He trains more on weekdays than weekends.
C. He follows a strict daily routine. D. He gets tired of long-hour practice.
7 What does the underlined word “blundered” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Made a mistake. B. Gave up easily.
C. Showed confidence. D. Got special permits.

Billions of years ago, water flowed on the surface of Mars. But scientists have an incomplete picture of how the Red Planet’s water cycle worked. That could soon change after two graduate students at The University of Texas at Austin filled a large gap in knowledge about Mars’ water cycle — specifically, the part between surface water and groundwater.
Students Mohammad Afzal Shadab and Eric Hiatt developed a computer model that calculates how long it took for water on early Mars to percolate from the surface down to the aquifer (含水层), which is thought to have been about a mile underground. They found that it took anywhere from 50 to 200 years. On Earth, where the water table in most places is much closer to the surface, the same process typically takes just a few days.
The researchers also determined that the amount of water flowing slowly between surface and aquifer could have been enough to cover Mars with at least 300 feet of water. This was potentially a significant portion of the planet’s total available water. The research helps complete scientists’ understanding of the water cycle on early Mars, said Shadab.
Shadab, the lead author of the study, stated that the goal is to incorporate this into an integrated model illustrating how water and land co-evolved over millions of years to reach their current state. This approach, he explained, would bring researchers closer to solving the mystery of what became of Mars’ water. Currently, Mars is predominantly arid, at least on its surface. However, between 3 and 4 billion years ago, oceans, lakes, and rivers shaped valleys through the planet’s mountains and craters.
Ultimately, Mars’ water mostly locked in the crust (地壳) or was lost to space. The new findings add to an alternative picture; early Mars had little water recycling like Earth. “Once water got into the ground on Mars, it was as good as gone,” said coauthor Hiatt. The water leaking slowly into the crust wasn’t lost to space, which could help future explorers find buried water resources for a Mars settlement.
8. What do we know about early Mars’ water cycle?
A. It recycled water like Earth. B. Groundwater was. easily lost.
C. Mars never had liquid water. D. Surface-aquifer flow was slower than Earth’s.
9. What did the study imply about Mars’ early water?
A. It was less than that on Earth. B. It played a role in land formation.
C. It existed mainly in the form of ice. D. It failed to shape the planet’s surface.
10. What might future explorers do based on the findings?
A. Reduce space missions. B. Build surface settlements.
C. Seek underground water. D. Study Earth’s water cycle.
11. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Mars: A Dry Planet’s Life Mystery B. Groundwater: Key to Mars’ Exploration
C. Earth vs. Mars: Water Cycle Differences D. New Model: Unlocking Mars’ Water Cycle
D
New research shows that solar panels in Colorado’s grasslands may reduce water stress, improve soil moisture levels, and — particularly during dry years — increase plant growth by about 20% or more compared to open fields. This growth boost, which scientists say comes from reduced evaporation and enhanced water storage, can reach up to 90% in some dry-year cases on the east side of panels.
The findings outline potential benefits and challenges of photovoltaic (PV) arrays in grassland ecosystems. The work is particularly relevant to drought in the arid West and future climate change, as rising temperatures are projected to worsen water stress and threaten grassland health long-term.
While solar power systems are a key source of renewable energy, they reduce sunlight for plant growth, potentially impacting wildlife habitat, carbon. storage capacity, and forage production for livestock. The study, based on four years of data from an agrivoltaics facility in Longmont, is the first to field-test how co-locating solar and grasslands alters ecosystem dynamics at a regional scale.
The team found plants beneath and around solar systems benefited from partial shading and water collected on panels, aiding survival in harsh summers. During dry years, grass growth on the east side of panels was up to 90% more productive than neighboring sites, likely due to morning sunlight exposure combined with reduced midday heat stress. In wet and normal years. this response lessened but still showed higher growth than control areas.
Cornell postdoc Matthew Sturchio and CSU’s Alan Knapp say the results demonstrate synergies (协同作用) between solar energy and grassland use for renewable power and ecosystem stability. “This is the first analysis showing pronounced benefits with increasing aridity,” Sturchio notes, adding that gains could grow significantly if panels were designed to maximize environmental benefits through adjustable angle or spacing.
Knapp plans to study C4 grasses in Colorado plains, which are more water-limited and adapted to high temperatures. The team thinks solar panels can restore grassland ecosystems by promoting diverse plant communities, with testing now underway — a project aiming to integrate solar energy with sustainable grazing practices.
12. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The harm of solar power systems. B. The importance of wildlife habitat.
C. The challenges of grassland ecosystems. D. The effects of solar panels on grasslands.
13. What is the team’s attitude to solar panels?
A. Neutral. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.
14. How can the environmental benefits of solar panels be maximized?
A. By reducing panel numbers. B. By moving panels to deserts.
C. By covering panels with grass. D. By adjusting panel angle or spacing.
15. Why does the author mention C4 grasses?
A. To show their importance.
B. To introduce a new study.
C. To explain the adaptability of grasslands.
D. To stress plant growth limitations in dry conditions.

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11.

A By reducing panel numbers. B. By moving panels to deserts.
C. By covering panels with grass. D. By adjusting panel angle or spacing.
15. Why does the author mention C4 grasses?
A. To show their importance.
B. To introduce a new study.
C To explain the adaptability of grasslands.
D. To stress plant growth limitations in dry conditions.

【答案】 Right away, they started working to save what they could. They gently lifted the undamaged plants to new clean trays, refilled nutrient-rich soil carefully, and watered them lightly with a small spray bottle. Dede took the lead in rearranging the labels neatly and checking every page of the growth records repeatedly to ensure no important data was lost. They stayed after school for two whole days, taking turns to care for the rescued plants and monitor their growth closely. Though tired, everyone encouraged each other constantly, gradually turning the initial panic into firm determination.
On the day of the science fair, their project was still really good. They explained their experiment process and findings clearly to the judges, not forgetting to share how they worked together to deal with the unexpected accident. The judges nodded approvingly, praising their excellent teamwork and detailed, complete records. Many visitors were attracted and stopped to listen to their introduction. In the end, their project won a third-place award. Dede smiled brightly, realizing deeply that mistakes weren’t the end of everything — working together with teammates made even difficult challenges solvable. She felt much prouder of her united team than the award itself.
