【Text 10】
W: On September 16th, 2021, a group of “ordinary” people blasted off into space on the first space mission with no professional astronauts. The mission, called Inspiration 4, was the idea of a billionaire Jared Isaacman, who paid the company SpaceX to arrange the flight. He’s a pilot who has flown different kinds of airplanes. Mr. Isaacman decided to use the trip to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Haley Arceneaux, 29, was a cancer patient at St. Jude when she was a child. Ms. Arceneaux works at St. Jude as a physician’s assistant, helping patients and assisting doctors. She is the youngest American to fly into orbit. The capsule has room for four crew members. Mr. Isaacman’s company held a contest to fill one of the spots. The position was won by Dr. Sian Proctor, a college professor who was nearly chosen as a NASA astronaut in 2009. The Inspiration 4 mission orbited 360 miles (575 km) above the Earth. That was about 93 miles higher than the International Space Station.

When most kids go to the beach, they're too focused on making sandcastles and splashing around to notice litter, but several years ago, for 7-year-old Cash Daniels, noticing a plastic straw sparked a lifelong passion for saving the planet.
Cash, who is now known as the “conservation kid”, has always loved nature. He grew up fishing along the Chattanooga River, after all! But once he learned that 80 percent of all trash from land and rivers ends up in the ocean, he couldn't sit back.
He started with clean-ups along the river, something that quickly went from a family affair to a community effort with volunteers and neighbors. In 2019, Cash, together with a Canadian conservationist, Ella Galaski-Rossen, started a nonprofit organization called the Clean-up Kids. Despite living in different countries, they managed to create educational videos on their YouTube channel. “We hope to be a really big nonprofit organization that eliminates plastic in the U.S. and Canada,” Cash said. “We want to inform kids and adults in the landlocked states about how their actions are connected to the water and the ocean,” Cash said.
Cash was selected as one of America's top 10 youth volunteers of 2021 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. He also earned the title of “National Honoree”, for which he received a $5,000 grant to go to a nonprofit organization of his choice, and he became the first person to win the Young Conservationist Award two years in a row from the Tennessee Wildlife Federation.
“I want to travel the world, teach others, and help them feel connected to the ocean, because if you are connected to the ocean—if you love it and what lives in it—you'll want to protect it,” he said. “This is my fun, and it becomes more fun with every new discovery.”
24.Which can replace the underlined words “sit back” in paragraph 2?
A.Fall asleep. B.Lose heart.
C.Turn a blind eye. D.Lend a hand.
25.What is the purpose of starting the Clean-up Kids?
A.To recycle waste plastics.
B.To make instructive videos.
C.To spread marine knowledge.
D.To appeal for ocean protection.
26.Which of the following best describes Cash Daniels?
A.Sympathetic and devoted.
B.Active and talented.
C.Ambitious and humorous.
D.Determined and modest.
27.What does Cash Daniels' story imply?
A.Passion fuels dreams.
B.Great minds think alike.
C.Helping others is of great fun.
D.Actions speak louder than words.

No one, except maybe Sesame Street's Oscar the Grouch, wants to consume food that most people think of as garbage. But if everyone ate food that might otherwise be thrown out—say, strange animal parts or milk that's close to its sell-by date—we'd significantly reduce the impacts of human-caused climate change.
“Addressing food waste turns out to be one of the biggest climate solutions of them all,” said climate scientist Jonathan Foley, who serves as executive director of the climate solutions think tank Project Drawdown.
According to the food waste reduction nonprofit ReFED, 38% of the U.S. food supply goes uneaten. All of the processes involved in making food, from clearing land and raising cattle to packaging and cooking ingredients, contribute to one-third of the world's planet-warming pollution. The food waste that ends up rotting (腐烂) in landfills is particularly problematic.
“It causes methane (甲烷) to go into the atmosphere as well, and that's a really powerful greenhouse gas,” Foley said. Methane traps more heat than carbon dioxide, which causes global warming. An estimated 50% of methane emissions are human-caused and come largely from agriculture, fossil fuels and food waste rotting in landfills.
Restaurants are in a suitable position to help solve this problem. According to research from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, people are spending more on eating out in this country than they are at home, and the restaurant industry was responsible for almost 10 million tons of leftover food in 2023, according to 2023 data from ReFED.
“Restaurants can make small practical changes, like reducing or customizing portion (一份) sizes. That's a big one,” said Roni Neff, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who studies food systems and waste. “Seventy percent of the food that's wasted in restaurants is happening after it's served to people on their plates.”
Neff said restaurants can also simplify their ordering processes so extra food isn't sitting around. And then there are the chefs. “They can help to shape people's views, expand our ideas of what's good food. And they can also shift behavior in easier ways,” he said.
28.How does food waste harm the climate according to the text?
A.It causes damage to agriculture.
B.It decreases greenhouse gas emissions.
C.It raises energy use in food production.
D.It leads to the release of a greenhouse gas.
29.What is the purpose of paragraph 5?
A.To criticize food waste in restaurants.
B.To suggest the government take measures.
C.To stress restaurants' role in waste reduction.
D.To emphasize the growing trend of eating out.
30.What can restaurants do to reduce food waste?
A.Restrict the business hours.
B.Offer rotted food to customers.
C.Serve large portions to please customers.
D.Adjust meal sizes to match customers' needs.
31.What does the underlined word “They” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Chefs. B.Customers.
C.Food systems. D.Ordering processes.

For lots of kids, toddlerhood(幼儿期) is an important time for friendship. Studies show that the earlier kids learn to form positive relationships, the better they are at relating to others as teenagers and adults. Playing together also helps these kids practice social behavior, such as kindness, sharing, and cooperation.
Even so, how quickly your child develops into a social creature may also depend on his temperament(性格). Some toddlers are very social, but others are shy. In addition, the way that toddlers demonstrate that they like other children is markedly different from what adults think of as expressions of friendship. Research at Ohio State in Columbus found that a toddler's way of saying “I like you” during play is likely to come in the form of copying a friend's behavior.
This seemingly unusual way of demonstrating fondness can result in unpleasant behavior. Regardless of how much they like a playmate, they may still grab his toys, refuse to share, and get bossy. But experts say that this is a normal and necessary part of friendship for kids of this age. Through play experiences, toddlers learn social rules. That's why it's so important to take an active role in your toddler's social encounters by setting limits and offering frequent reminders of what they are. When you establish these guidelines, explain the reasons behind them.
Begin by helping your child learn sympathy (“Ben is crying. What's making him so sad?”), and then suggest how he could resolve the problem (“Maybe he would feel better if you let him play the ball.”). When your child shares or shows empathy(同理心) for a friend, praise him (“Ben stopped crying! You made him feel better.”).
Another way to encourage healthy social interaction is by encouraging kids to use words—not fists—to express how they feel. It's also important to be mindful of how your child's personality affects playtime. Kids are easy to get angry when they're sleepy or hungry, so schedule playtime when they're refreshed.
32.What does it indicate when toddlers copy their playmates' behavior?
A.They are interested in acting.
B.They are shy with the strangers.
C.They are fond of their playmates.
D.They are tired of playing games.
33.What does the author suggest parents do for their kids?
A.Design games for them.
B.Find them suitable playmates.
C.Play together with them.
D.Help them understand social rules.
34.What is the function of the quoted statements in paragraph 4?
A.Giving examples.
B.Explaining concepts.
C.Providing evidence.
D.Making comparisons.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.How Children Adapt to Changes
B.How to Be a Role Model for Children
C.How Your Baby Learns to Love
D.How to Communicate with Your Kid

Sara Lewis, an expert who studies the insects, offers tips on what you can do to ensure that fireflies will continue to light up your backyard.
Create a firefly habitat
37. . With about 2,000 different species of fireflies, there's a wide variety of environments in which they thrive(茁壮成长)—including wetlands, forests, and even city parks—which is why some species are more threatened than others. “You can recreate those conditions in your own backyard simply by leaving some leaf litter around the edges of your property,”Lewis says. “That's a good microhabitat for fireflies.”
38.
Flashing lights is an important part in fireflies' life. As the sun sets, male fireflies move around while flashing their lights to signal their interest. If a nearby female is interested, she flashes back from her position to the ground, and the males fly down to find her. “All of that has to happen for the next generation to survive,” says Lewis. “However, light pollution makes those scenes much harder to see. It's like cutting a phone line. It really stops the romance. 39. . You can draw your curtains at night and turn off the lights completely when possible.”
Stop using pesticides (杀虫剂)
Using pesticides in your yard also poses an existential threat to fireflies, which are insects after all. 40. . Scientists are researching alternatives to chemical pesticides that could target specific species, like mosquitoes, while leaving other insects unharmed.
A.Reduce light pollution
B.Make a fire in the open air

D.But these beloved insects are in trouble

While perusing the dessert section at a local dessert shop, Jeff Greene, a middle-aged man in a friendly manner, was drawn to the beautiful display of cakes and pies. He was accompanied by his wife, Emily, and their teenage daughter, Sophie, who were all eagerly discussing which treat they should take home. The air was filled with the sweet aroma of freshly baked goods, making the decision even more delightful and challenging.
As Jeff reached for a box of chocolate mousse, he noticed Tara, a young, enthusiastic employee, arranging the pies on the shelf. Her eyes lit up as she noticed Jeff's curiosity. “Hi there!” Tara greeted warmly. “If you're looking for a recommendation, the key lime pie (酸橙派) here is my absolute favorite. It's tangy and sweet—truly the best!”
Jeff smiled, interested. “Really? I actually make a pretty good key lime pie myself. But I'm up for trying this one.”
Tara's eyes sparkled with excitement. “You won't be disappointed! It's really special.”
Jeff thanked her, and he and his family continued their shopping, chatting about their plans for dessert. The conversation was filled with laughter and anticipation, as they debated the merits of each dessert. Emily suggested the chocolate mousse, while Sophie leaned towards a classic apple pie. Yet, the enthusiasm in Tara's voice about the key lime pie lingered in Jeff's mind, adding a touch of curiosity to their decision. Little did they know, this brief exchange would soon unfold into a heartwarming story.
As they reached the checkout, Jeff's family noticed something unusual. The key lime pie they had initially chosen was missing from their cart. Instead, they found a pie with a handwritten note attached. The note read: “Enjoy this key lime pie, on me! Tara.”
Jeff was taken by surprise by the unexpected gesture. “Wow, this is such a nice surprise,” he said, his voice filled with genuine gratitude. His family shared his feeling, touched by Tara's kindness.
