Passage 1
Mixing concrete and charcoal powder(木炭粉) could enable houses to store an entire day's worth of energy in their concrete foundations. This innovative method of creating a supercapacitor(超级电容器)—an alternative to batteries—could be used to construct the foundations of buildings. When combined with renewable energy sources, it even could wirelessly recharge electric vehicles as they drive along.
“The materials are available to everyone all over the place, all over the world,” says Franz-Josef Ulm at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He and his colleagues showed how the supercapacitor can be mixed with water to form a solid block with carbon-filled wire-like structures. When the concrete is placed in an electrolyte(电解液), it will serve as a capacitor, enabling energy storage.
The researchers say that the next step might be to create 12-volt supercapacitors that can be connected to provide more charging power for large devices. They calculated that a concrete block similar to a cube 3.5 metres on each side could store 10 kilowatt-hours of energy. That is about a third of the average daily household electricity use in the US and about 1.25 times the average in the UK. The material could maintain its charging and discharging capabilities beyond 10,000 cycles, which means, in theory, that it could provide energy storage for a solar-powered home for more than 27 years.
Viable as it sounds, Yury Gogotsi at Drexel University in Pennsylvania notes that one engineering challenge is to replace conventional concrete with materials built with the supercapacitors, and that keeping the supercapacitor wetted with the conductive salt solution for the lifetime of the building or road would be challenging.
Still, the MIT team expressed optimism about how many people worldwide could start experimenting with this relatively simple blueprint for a low-cost supercapacitor. “The fundamental aspect of this technology is that it's two historical, ancient materials that come together, that we have known for thousands of years,” says Admir Masic at MIT.
1.What is the innovative method intended for?
A.Serving as a battery to store energy. B.Enhancing the strength of the concrete.
C.Reducing the cost of constructing buildings. D.Improving the material for electric vehicles.
2.How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A.By explaining principles. B.By giving a definition.
C.By making a comparison. D.By listing numbers.
3.Which can replace the underlined word “Viable” in Paragraph 4?
A.Important. B.Practicable. C.Unusual. D.Difficult.
4.What does Admir Masic mean in the last paragraph?
A.The new technology is promising.
B.He draws a blueprint for the new method.
C.Supercapacitors still have a long way to go.
D.Natural materials are vital to the technology.
Passage 2
In the race to document the species on Earth before they go extinct, researchers and citizen scientists have collected billions of records. Today, most records of biodiversity are often in the form of photos, videos, and other digital records. Though they are useful for detecting shifts in the number and variety of species in an area, a new Stanford study has found that this type of record is not perfect.
“With the rise of technology it is easy for people to make observations of different species with the aid of a mobile application,” said Barnabas Daru, who is lead author of the study and assistant professor of biology in the Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences. “These observations now outnumber the primary data that comes from physical specimens(标本), and since we are increasingly using observational data to investigate how species are responding to global change, I wanted to know: Are they usable?”
Using a global dataset of 1.9 billion records of plants, insects, birds, and animals, Daru and his team tested how well these data represent actual global biodiversity patterns.
“We were particularly interested in exploring the aspects of sampling that tend to bias(使有偏差) data, like the greater likelihood of a citizen scientist to take a picture of a flowering plant instead of the grass right next to it,” said Daru.
Their study revealed that the large number of observation-only records did not lead to better global coverage. Moreover, these data are biased and favor certain regions, time periods, and species. This makes sense because the people who get observational biodiversity data on mobile devices are often citizen scientists recording their encounters with species in areas nearby. These data are also biased toward certain species with attractive or eye-catching features.
What can we do with the imperfect datasets of biodiversity?
“Quite a lot,” Daru explained. “Biodiversity apps can use our study results to inform users of oversampled areas and lead them to places—and even species—that are not well-sampled. To improve the quality of observational data, biodiversity apps can also encourage users to have an expert confirm the identification of their uploaded image.”
5.What do we know about the records of species collected now?
A.They are becoming outdated. B.They are mostly in electronic form.
C.They are limited in number. D.They are used for public exhibition.
6.What does Daru's study focus on?
A.Threatened species. B.Physical specimens.
C.Observational data. D.Mobile applications.
7.What has led to the biases according to the study?
A.Mistakes in data analysis. B.Poor quality of uploaded pictures.
C.Improper way of sampling. D.Unreliable data collection devices.
8.What is Daru's suggestion for biodiversity apps?
A.Review data from certain areas. B.Hire experts to check the records.
C.Confirm the identity of the users. D.Give guidance to citizen scientists.

It was not so long ago that the contactless card payment was exciting and new, but the technology is already old hat. The new, better way to pay for things in shops? By using your phone to make a contactless payment.
Traditionally, when you have paid with a card tap (轻拍) or using a chip and PIN machine, ultimately the shop you are buying from will note down all of your card details. 1. And this could be a problem—it means that if the shop's database is hacked (非法侵入) or it plays fast and loose with its data, you could find your card number exposed to the world.
However, when you tap to pay with your device, it generates a unique ID number for that deal and sends that instead. So you can pay for your goods and the shop can get your money. 2. That is to say, phone payment is smarter.
3. If a pickpocket steals your card, they can immediately use up the money. But if they get your phone, when the phone goes to pay, it will typically perform a biometric check—it will ask for a fingerprint or use the camera to look at your face, to check that you are who you say you are.
4. Because of this added security, the limit (限额) is typically higher than contactless cards. In the UK, it's around £100 for most retailers—though some shops including most supermarkets let you spend much more with just a tap on the phone.
Want to give it a try? To actually set things up, go to your Wallet app and follow the instructions. 5. Then it will automatically recognise the number and connect with your bank. Usually you receive a text message with a special code on it. And then, well, you're done. When you pay, hold your phone over the payment machine, and pay for your goods!
A.It helps to build the client list.
B.The setup process varies with banks.
C.No one needs to share any sensitive data.
D.It's also more effective against the threat of thefts.
E.And phone payment is increasingly convenient too.
F.Typically this starts by scanning your card with your phone.
G.Therefore, it knows which bank account to take the money from.

Passage 1
A new study published in the journal Science Advances finds that AI enhances creativity by boosting the novelty of story ideas as well as the “usefulness” of stories—their ability to engage the target audience and potential for publication. It finds that AI “professionalizes” stories, making them more enjoyable, more likely to have plot twists, better written and less boring.
The researchers assigned the 300 study participants to three groups: the first group was allowed no AI help, the second group could use ChatGPT to provide a single three-sentence starting idea, and writers in the third group could choose up to five AI-generated ideas for their inspiration.
They then organized 600 people to judge how good the stories were, assessing them for novelty—whether the stories did something new or unexpected—and “usefulness”—how appropriate they were for the target audience, and whether the ideas could be developed and potentially published.
They found that writers with the most access to AI experienced the greatest gains to their creativity, their stories scoring 9% higher for novelty compared with stories written without AI. Writers who used up to five AI-generated ideas also scored higher for emotional characteristics, producing stories that were better written, more enjoyable, less boring and funnier.
The researchers evaluated the writers' creativity using a Divergent Association Task (DAT) and found that more creative writers—those with the highest DAT scores—benefited least from generative AI ideas. Conversely, less creative writers saw a greater increase in creativity.
The researchers also calculated how similar the stories were to each other. They found a 10.7% increase in similarity between writers whose stories used one generative AI-idea, compared with the group that didn't use AI.
Anil Doshi, Assistant Professor at the UCL School of Management, said, “While these results point to an increase in individual creativity, there is a risk of losing collective novelty. If the publishing industry were to embrace more generative AI-inspired stories, our findings suggest that the stories would become less unique and more similar to each other.”
1.Which aspect of the AI-assisted stories were assessed in the study?
A.Universality and availability. B.Originality and practicality.
C.Creativity and specialization. D.Similarity and integrity.
2.What could the underlined word “Conversely” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Sure enough. B.In conclusion. C.On the contrary. D.As a result.
3.What is Anil Doshi's attitude towards AI-inspired stories?
A.Objective. B.Indifferent. C.Favorable. D.Ambiguous.
4.What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.AI Is Being Used to Create Novel Stories
B.AI Is Becoming a Threat to Human Writers
C.AI Can Help to Improve People's Writing Skills
D.AI Can Boost the Creativity of Stories but Pays a Price
Passage 2
For decades it's been hoped that seawater could be desalinated(淡化) to resolve the problem of drinking water shortage. Yet desalination plants still provide only around one percent of the world's drinking water. The progress goes slowly as desalination plants are expensive to build and use enormous quantities of energy to run. Energy accounts for one-third to more than half the cost of producing desalinated water.
In Saudi Arabia, the world's largest producer of desalinated water, the process accounts for up to a fifth of the nation's energy consumption. But all this may be changing. A 2020 study found that, globally, the average cost of desalinated water could halve if solar power and battery storage systems were used. Across the world, there are around 180 facilities currently under construction, or in their design phase, mostly in the Middle East and North Africa. New sources of renewable energy like solar power mean it's getting cheaper to power energy-hungry desalination equipment in sunny and water-stressed areas.
Egypt and Morocco, for example, are building renewable-powered plants designed both to provide drinking water and to water crops. In South Australia, a self-cooling greenhouse design that uses wind to desalinate seawater for crops is part of a commercial project producing 15 percent of Australian-grown tomatoes. Scientists are also making major breakthroughs, such as new self-cleaning membrane(膜) technology, which improve the desalination process.
One start-up, Core Power, is developing nuclear-powered offshore plants. Another, Oneka, is employing wave power for desalination units. This wave of growth and innovation is set to continue. A global desalination equipment market valued at 17 billion dollars in 2023 is expected to grow to 32 billion dollars by 2030.
But serious challenges remain. Most facilities still use non-renewable fuels to power the plants, and the pouring of processed seawater into the sea poses a threat to sea life. These problems will have to be addressed as a thirsty world looks to the desalination industry to provide its fresh water.
5.What results in the slow progress of desalination?
A.High production costs. B.Environmental concerns.
C.Lack of official support. D.Little demand for fresh water.
6.What do the facts in paragraphs 3 and 4 imply concerning the desalination industry?
A.It faces huge investment risks. B.It'll end water shortage soon.
C.It's merely a temporary success. D.It promises a bright prospect.
7.In which of the following publications would this text be printed?
A.Motor Trend. B.Runner's World.
C.The Economist. D.Psychology Today.
8.What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A.Why we depend on fresh water to live.
B.How to lessen negative effects of desalination.
C.What to do to store fresh water against droughts.
D.How desalination technologies boost water supply.
Ⅱ 七选五
How to Ease AI Anxiety
Rapid advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) have brought big challenges and it's logical for humans to feel anxious about it. 1. . The following can prove it and ease your anxiety.
Remember context is key
Keep in mind that the present moment is far from the first time people have feared the rise of an unfamiliar technology. “Computer anxiety” and “technostress” date back decades. Before that, there was uncontrollable worry over industrial automation. 2. . But many of the worst sci-fi predictions did not come true.
Address the problem together
Rather than sticking your head in the sand, gain new skills to prepare for a career change or learn about ongoing efforts to regulate AI. Meanwhile, confronting anxiety over AI might begin with coming up with collective solutions and finding your community. 3. .
Switch your attention
Another way to feel better about AI is to avoid too much attention to it. 4. . Taking breaks from technology to reconnect with nature or loved ones in the physical world is critical to mental health. Stepping away from technology can also provide a reminder of all the ways that humans are distinct from AI.
5.
The current technology is not truly producing new things but rather imitating or following what people can do. AI may be able to answer questions and solve problems, but it lacks the power to convey emotions, empathy and create original content. Therefore, unbiased(公正的) judgment and certainty about your own skills can help with uneasiness.
A.Focus on what you can control
B.Remind yourself of its limitations
C.More attention should be attached to AI
D.Getting involved in it is crucial to seeking security
E.There is more to life than just programs and screens
F.But humans aren't yet headed for a complete replacement

5.A 根据下文提到的内容可知,他的方案是基于该国的两个基本国情。fact事实;theory理论;answer答案;principle原则。故选A。
6.C 根据空后的“Second, that wind blew over a country”可知,乌拉圭的风力资源充足。water水;light光;wind风;ice冰。故选C。
7.B 根据下文提到的“the empty grassland”可知,这里的草地还未被开发。unexpected出乎意料的;undeveloped未开发的;protected受保护的;limited有限的。故选B。
8.D 根据空后的“the empty grassland into hundreds of wind farms”可知,他的方案就是把这些草地转变成风力发电场。固定短语turn...into...意为“把……变成……”。故选D。
9.D 根据空后的“used by some electric plants in neighboring Brazil, in which state-owned power plants handled energy generation...customer service”可知,他借鉴了巴西的方法,但做了改进。tool工具;software 软件;image 形象,影像;approach方法。故选D。
10.C 根据空前的while可知,此处与上文“in which state-owned power plants handled energy generation”中的state-owned形成对比,故此处表示在巴西,是私营公司负责配电。responsible有责任的;weak 弱的;private私营的;profitable有利可图的。故选C。
11.B 根据空后的“so that private companies would be in charge of setting up and 12 the wind farms, while the state-owned power companies would distribute that energy to its customers”可知,国有电力公司将把这些能源分配给客户,私营公司负责建立和管理风力发电场。
故选A。
13.C 根据下文“98% of Uruguay's 15 comes from renewable sources”可知,他的计划获得了意想不到的成功。hardly几乎不;relatively相对地;unexpectedly意想不到地;rarely很少地。故选C。
14.B 根据下文的“what he had set out to do: 98% of Uruguay's 15 comes from renewable sources”可知,仅仅几年,他就实现了供电目标。
