(B) School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D.C., students are hard at work outdoors. In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting (收获) vegetables for the weekend’s farmers market. Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a. m. until 2 p. m. with City Blossoms, a nonprofit that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviours home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables. City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged (使参与) and improve academic performance. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed or learning the science of how plants grow. For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their views on where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation (评价) conducted by PEER Associates. 4. What does Roshawn Little think of the summer outdoor activity? A. It is a good way to earn pocket money. B. It has improved her family relationship. C. It contributes to her healthy eating habit. D. It is helpful to her academic performance. 5. What is the purpose of the school gardens? A. To invite students to care for plants. B. To advance teachers’ teaching skills. C. To get students interested in science. D. To provide a creative way of learning. 6. What does the last paragraph focus on about the project of City Blossoms? A. Its evaluations. B. Its effects. C. Its operations. D. Its expectations. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. City Blossoms: Team up with Local Community Teachers B. Happy Holiday, Sweet Memory: How Kids Enjoy the Harvest C. Outdoor Classrooms: Get out for the Weekend’s Farmers Market D. Healthy Eaters, Smart Minds: What School Gardens Teach Kids (C) Recycling in general can be an effective way to reuse natural material resources. The U.S.’s high recycling rate of paper, 68 percent, has proved this point. But although some materials can be effectively recycled and safely made from recycled content, plastics cannot. Plastic recycling does not work and will never work. The problem with recycling plastic lies not in the concept or process but in the material itself. There are thousands of different plastics, each with its own characteristics. They all include different chemicals that cannot be recycled together, making it impossible to sort the trillions of pieces of plastics into separate types for processing. What’s more, plastic recycling costs more than new plastic because collecting, sorting, transporting, and reprocessing plastic waste is very expensive. Despite this obvious failure, the plastics industry has begun a decades-long campaign to keep the lie that the material is recyclable, which reminds the public of the tobacco industry’s efforts to tell smokers that filtered (过滤的) cigarettes are healthier than unfiltered cigarettes. Traditional mechanical recycling, in which plastic waste is ground up and melted (熔化), has been around for many decades. Now the plastics industry is promoting the benefits of so-called chemical recycling, in which plastic waste is broken down using high heat and turned into a low-quality fossil fuel. In 2018, Dow Chemical claimed that the Renewlogy chemical-recycling factory in Salt Lake City was able to reprocess mixed plastic waste through the “Hefty EnergyBag” program and turn it into diesel fuel (柴油). As Reuters showed in a 2021 survey, however, the pyrolysis (高温分解) process was not worth it. We’re not making a case for hopelessness. Just the opposite(相反的). We need the facts so that individuals and policymakers can take action. Proven solutions to the plastic-waste and pollution problems exist and can be quickly copied across the country. These solutions include placing bans on single-use plastic bags and unrecyclable single-use plastic food-service products, and installing dishwashing equipment in schools. Consumers can put pressure on companies to stop filling store shelves with single-use plastics by not buying them and instead choosing reusables and products in better packaging. And we should all keep recycling our paper, boxes, cans, and glass, because that actually works. 8. What is the problem with recycled plastic? A. It costs too much to produce. B. It can hardly be selected out. C. It is generally of poor quality. D. It can’t be stored in large numbers. 9. What is the plastics industry trying to do? A. To compete with the tobacco industry. B. To cut down the cost of recycling plastic. C. To uncover the lie of the tobacco industry. D. To prove the possibility of recycling plastic. 10 What is the fourth paragraph mainly about? A. Traditional recycling proves to be safer. B. Chemical recycling turns out to be a failure. C. Chemical recycling can save energy resources. D. Traditional recycling can deal with limited waste. 11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To show the difficulty in recycling plastic. B. To introduce a new way of recycling plastic. C. To stress the importance of recycling plastic. D. To call for a ban on single-use plastic products. (D) Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese writer Liu Cixin. Until four years ago, Liu worked full-time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu’s imagination took flight. He did what he might never have the chance to do in real life — wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit planets light-years away. But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably hadn’t expected that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize, in 2015. Perhaps neither did he think that former US president Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, nor that on Nov 9 in Washington DC, he would win the 2018 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It’s the first time a Chinese writer has ever won the award. In his acceptance speech, Liu said that he owed his imagination to Arthur C. Clarke (1917 — 2008), a famous UK sci-fi author. He said that reading Clarke’s 1968 classic novel 2001: A Space Odyssey in the early 1980s had a great effect on him. “My mind opened up like never before. I felt like a narrow river finally seeing the sea,” Liu said. “That night, in my eyes, the starry sky was completely different from the past. For the first time in my life, I was awed (充满敬畏的) by the mystery of the universe.” But no matter how far away Liu’s imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay rational (理性的). In The Three-Body Problem, for example, Liu tells a tale of aliens invading Earth. But unlike other alien stories, Liu talks more about relationships between civilizations, rules of survival, and the meanings of life. And in The Wandering Earth, Liu looks ahead to the day when our solar system comes to an end and humans have to look for a new place to live. However, all his visions and solutions are based on “hard science”. Liu’s works aren’t simply daydreams. 12. What do we know about Liu Cixin? A. He became a full-time writer when he was young. B. He is the first Asian to win the Arthur Clarke Award. C. He is the first Chinese winner of the Hugo Award. D He dreamed about wandering in space from childhood. 13. Liu Cixin’s words are used mainly to show ___________. A. his feeling after reading Clarke’s work B. his love of reading science fiction C. his interest in mysteries of the universe D. his confusion when he started writing 14. Why did the author mention The Three-Body Problem and The Wandering Earth? A. To prove that Liu Cixin’s works relate science to reality. B. To explain how Liu Cixin came up with his ideas. C. To show that Liu Cixin has a powerful imagination. D. To compare the different writing styles in the two books. 15. What’s the text mainly about? A. Liu Cixin’s contributions to science fiction. B. Liu Cixin’s achievements and writing style. C. How Liu Cixin became a sci-fi writer. D. How Liu Cixin started a new sci-fi style. 三、七选五 (每题2.5分 共12.5分) In our fast world of phones, fax machines and computers, the old-fashioned art of letter writing is at risk of disappearing altogether. ____16____ There is the excitement of its arrival, the pleasure of seeing who it is from and, finally, the enjoyment of the contents. Receiving an award on such a day was a great honor for any scout, and all desired to be the scout selected to give the summary of the year’s activities for the association. I was not the one selected to give the summary and for that, I was grateful. I could hardly stand in front of a large crowd to make a speech, but Sean could. He was selected to do the honor because he was the President of the Boy Scouts. My job was much simpler. Being the Vice-President, I was very much behind the scenes, content to ensure that everything was in smooth running order. It was an hour to go before the ceremony began, and I had put the finishing touches to the stage. Walking down the stage, I saw my teammates in a state of panic(恐慌).When they saw me, they ran to me to tell me that Sean met with a traffic accident and would not make it to the award ceremony. Someone else had to give the summary. All of them looked hopefully at me, and I could feel my knees beginning to collapse. All their arguments against my unwillingness were reasonable. I had a copy of the speech as well as the benefit of having seen Sean rehearse(排练)it. I was the Vice-President and therefore should take his place. Finally, I was firmly told not to turn it down any longer and they said that they were convinced that I would do the right thing. I sank down onto the floor, totally shocked by the situation. I knew I was not a confident speaker, and the thought of presenting a summary in front of so many distinguished guests horrified me. To think that the fame of the scouts would take a beating because of me! The burden of responsibility troubled me greatly. But there was really no way out of the situation. In the end, I quickly rehearsed the speech and got ready to go on stage for the presentation. I looked calm, but inside I was a trembling. Although they kept encouraging me, I still felt very worried that my poor performance would cost us the opportunity to win an award. Soon after, I was called to do the presentation. Having butterflies in my stomach, I walked onto the stage. As I stood on the stage, my heart beat violently. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 宁海高级中学2024-2025学年度第二学期3月质量检测 英语试题 一、听力选择题 (每题1.5分 共30分) 1. 6 What does the last paragraph focus on about the project of City Blossoms? Healthy Eaters, Smart Minds: What School Gardens Teach Kids 【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. 根据第二段“Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. And she’s taken those healthy behaviours home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.(罗肖恩·利特尔即将在东方大学读大三,她已经在这个花园里工作了三年了。 根据第三段“City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged (使参与) and improve academic performance. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed or learning the science of how plants grow.(城市之花是全国各地与当地社区合作建造学校花园的众多团体之一,就像东方大学的花园一样。它与学校合作创建学习花园,并培训教师如何利用它们让学生参与进来,提高学习成绩。这些花园是真正的户外教室。例如,花园可以用来上数学课,比如计算植物床的面积或学习植物生长的科学。)”可推知,学校花园的目的是提供创造性的学习方式。故选D。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their views on where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation (评价) conducted by PEER Associates.(对于学生们来说,这段经历可以让他们在营养学上大开眼界,完全改变了他们对食物来源和生产食物所需条件的看法。根据PEER协会进行的一项独立评估,合作学校通过标准化考试的学生人数也增加了12%至15%,94%的教师报告说,学生的参与度有所提高。)”可知,城市之花项目的重点是它的影响。故选B。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段中“She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviours home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.(她认为,在花园里工作教会了她尝试各种新事物,比如更经常地吃不同种类的蔬菜。她把这些健康的行为带回家,她的饮食习惯鼓励她的家人买更多的水果和蔬菜。)”以及最后一段中“For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their views on where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation (评价) conducted by PEER Associates.(对于学生们来说,这段经历可以让他们在营养学上大开眼界,完全改变了他们对食物来源和生产食物所需条件的看法。根据PEER协会进行的一项独立评估,合作学校通过标准化考试的学生人数也增加了12%至15%,94%的教师报告说,学生的参与度有所提高)”和纵观全文可知,本文主要介绍了学校花园的好处,所以D项“健康的饮食,聪明的头脑:学校花园教给孩子们什么”是本文最好的标题。故选D。 (C) Recycling in general can be an effective way to reuse natural material resources. 10. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about? 8. A 9. D 10. B 11. D. He dreamed about wandering in space from childhood. C 13. A 14. A 15. 根据第二段中的“But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably hadn’t expected that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize, in 2015.(但即使有着如此强大的想象力,55岁的刘慈欣可能也没想到他会成为2015年第一个获得雨果奖的亚洲人,雨果奖是科幻小说的最高奖项。)” 根据第三段中的“He said that reading Clarke’s 1968 classic novel 2001: A Space Odyssey in the early 1980s had a great effect on him.(他说,在1980年代早期阅读克拉克1968年的经典小说《2001:太空漫游》对他影响很大。)”和第四段““My mind opened up like never before. I felt like a narrow river finally seeing the sea,” Liu said. “That night, in my eyes, the starry sky was completely different from the past. For the first time in my life, I was awed (充满敬畏的) by the mystery of the universe.”(“我的思想前所未有地开阔了。我感觉自己就像一条狭窄的小河,终于看到了大海,”刘慈欣说。“那天晚上,在我眼里,繁星点点的天空与过去完全不同。这是我有生以来第一次对宇宙的神秘感到敬畏。”)”可知,刘慈欣说克拉克的小说对自己产生了巨大的影响,他说他这些话是在描述他阅读后的感受。故选A。 根据最后一段首句“But no matter how far away Liu’s imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay rational(理性的).(但不管刘慈欣的想象力带他走多远,他的小说总是保持理性。)”可知,刘慈欣的小说虽然富有想象力,但总会保持理性,接着“In The Three-Body Problem, for example, Liu tells a tale of aliens invading Earth. 故选A。 通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中的“Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese writer Liu Cixin.(也许没有人比中国作家刘慈欣更了解想象力的力量。)”、第二段“But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably hadn’t expected that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize, in 2015. Letter writing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. It probably began with the little notes I would write to my mother. My mother, also, always insisted I write my own thank-you letters for Christmas and birthday presents. ____17____. When I left home at 18 to train as a doctor in London, I would write once a week, and so would my mother. Occasionally my father would write and it was always a joy to receive his long, amusing letters. ____18____ Of course, we also made phone calls but it is the letters that I remember most. There were also letters from my boyfriend. In our youth he had to work or study away at some time and we were only able to stay in touch by letter. ____19____ I found that I could often express myself more easily in writing than by talking. I love the letters that come with birthday or Christmas cards. Notes are appreciated, but how much better to have a year’s supply of news! And it’s better still when it’s an airmail envelope with beautiful stamps. ____20____ Like my mother before me, I insist they write their own thank-you letters. My daughter writes to me little letters, just as I did to my mother. I strongly urge readers not to allow letter writing to become another “lost art”. A. Poor handwriting can spoil (破坏) your enjoyment of a letter. B. I am pleased that my children are carrying on the tradition. C. We had been writing to each other for a long time but never met. D. It didn’t matter how short or untidy they were as long as they were letters. E. But instead of harming the relationship, letter writing seemed to improve them. F. Yet, to me, receiving a letter cannot be matched by any form of communication. G. The letters from him contained just everyday events concerning my parents and their friends. 【答案】16. F 17. D 18. G 19. E 20. Yet, to me, receiving a letter cannot be matched by any form of communication.(然而,对我来说,任何形式的沟通方式也不能与收到一封信的感觉相匹配。)该项中提到的“any form of communication”即指代第一句中出现的电话、传真、电脑等交流方式。F项起承上启下的作用,故选F。 【17题详解】 考查上下文逻辑关系。第二段第一、二句提到从开始记事起写信就是作者生活中的一部分了,而且作者的妈妈也会在圣诞节和生日的时候给作者写信。D.项提到It didn’t matter how short or untidy they were as long as they were letters.(只要是字母,无论长短或是凌乱都不重要。)根据前文可知,作者从很小可能都不会写字的时候就开始写信,有可能字迹非常潦草,但真正重要的是作者家中写作这一传统,D项起总结上文的作用,故选D。 【18题详解】 考查上下文逻辑关系。第三段第二局提到“Occasionally my father would write and it was always a joy to receive his long, amusing letters.”作者有时候也会收到父亲写的长长的、有趣的信。G项提到The letters from him contained just everyday events concerning my parents and their friends.(他的信件只包含有关父母和他们朋友之间的日常)G项中提到的him指代的是前文中“my father”。G项起承上启下的作用,故选G。 【19题详解】 考查上下文逻辑关系。第四段最后一句提到“I found that I could often express myself more easily in writing than by talking.”作者认为写信比说话更容易表达自己。第四段开头提到作者和男朋友年轻的时候分开工作或学习,只能通过信件联系,且该段最后提到作者觉得通过书信的形式更容易表达自己。由此说明作者通过书信的方式改善了和男朋友之间的关系。E项提到But instead of harming the relationship, letter writing seemed to improve them.(但是,写信并没有损害这种关系,反而改善了这种关系。)E项起承上启下的作用。故选E。 【20题详解】 考查上下文逻辑关系。最后一段第二三句提到“Like my mother before me, I insist they write their own thank-you letters. My daughter writes to me little letters, just as I did to my mother.”作者也会像她妈妈一样要求自己的孩子写感谢信,就像作者小时候与她妈妈做的那样。由此可知,作者在拥有了自己的孩子后仍然保持着这个传统。B.项提到I am pleased that my children are carrying on the tradition.(我很高兴我的孩子也继承发扬着这个传统。)由此可知,该项为此段的中心句,故选B。 【点睛】七选五题型要求考生从整体上把握文章的逻辑结构和内容上的联系,理解句子之间、段落之间的关系,对诸如连贯性、一致性等语段特征有较强的意识和熟练的把握。所以懂得整篇文章的基本结构或段落的语篇结构对解题很有用。本文是记叙文体裁,可以根据上下文的内容进行选择。如最后一题空处后的“Like my mother before me…“(就像我妈妈之前那样……),可根据这句话定位到第二段第一句“Letter writing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. It probably began with the little notes I would write to my mother.”作者有记忆起就开始写信了,小时候经常写信给自己的妈妈。由此可判断这是作者小时候就做的事,并且和自己的小孩也继续这样做着,说明这是作者家里的传统。B项提到“…tradition”,符合对于文章内容做出的判断,因此选B。 四、完形填空 (每题1分 共20分) The shower, I find, is the best place to cry. I knew I was not a confident speaker and the thought of presenting a summary in front of so many distinguished guests horrified me. 注意: 1.续写词数应为80到100词; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 As I stood on the stage, my heart beat violently. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 As I stood on the stage, my heart beat violently.
