School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D.C., students are hard at work outdoors. In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting (收获) vegetables for the weekend’s farmers market.
Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a. m. until 2 p. m. with City Blossoms, a nonprofit that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviours home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.
City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged (使参与) and improve academic performance. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed or learning the science of how plants grow.
For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their views on where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation (评价) conducted by PEER Associates.
4. What does Roshawn Little think of the summer outdoor activity?
A. It is a good way to earn pocket money. B. It has improved her family relationship.
C. It contributes to her healthy eating habit. D. It is helpful to her academic performance.
5. What is the purpose of the school gardens?
A. To invite students to care for plants. B. To advance teachers’ teaching skills.
C. To get students interested in science. D. To provide a creative way of learning.
6. What does the last paragraph focus on about the project of City Blossoms?
A. Its evaluations. B. Its effects.
C. Its operations. D. Its expectations.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. City Blossoms: Team up with Local Community Teachers
B. Happy Holiday, Sweet Memory: How Kids Enjoy the Harvest
C. Outdoor Classrooms: Get out for the Weekend’s Farmers Market
D. Healthy Eaters, Smart Minds: What School Gardens Teach Kids
(C)
Recycling in general can be an effective way to reuse natural material resources. The U.S.’s high recycling rate of paper, 68 percent, has proved this point. But although some materials can be effectively recycled and safely made from recycled content, plastics cannot. Plastic recycling does not work and will never work.
The problem with recycling plastic lies not in the concept or process but in the material itself. There are thousands of different plastics, each with its own characteristics. They all include different chemicals that cannot be recycled together, making it impossible to sort the trillions of pieces of plastics into separate types for processing. What’s more, plastic recycling costs more than new plastic because collecting, sorting, transporting, and reprocessing plastic waste is very expensive.
Despite this obvious failure, the plastics industry has begun a decades-long campaign to keep the lie that the material is recyclable, which reminds the public of the tobacco industry’s efforts to tell smokers that filtered (过滤的) cigarettes are healthier than unfiltered cigarettes.
Traditional mechanical recycling, in which plastic waste is ground up and melted (熔化), has been around for many decades. Now the plastics industry is promoting the benefits of so-called chemical recycling, in which plastic waste is broken down using high heat and turned into a low-quality fossil fuel. In 2018, Dow Chemical claimed that the Renewlogy chemical-recycling factory in Salt Lake City was able to reprocess mixed plastic waste through the “Hefty EnergyBag” program and turn it into diesel fuel (柴油). As Reuters showed in a 2021 survey, however, the pyrolysis (高温分解) process was not worth it.
We’re not making a case for hopelessness. Just the opposite(相反的). We need the facts so that individuals and policymakers can take action. Proven solutions to the plastic-waste and pollution problems exist and can be quickly copied across the country. These solutions include placing bans on single-use plastic bags and unrecyclable single-use plastic food-service products, and installing dishwashing equipment in schools.
Consumers can put pressure on companies to stop filling store shelves with single-use plastics by not buying them and instead choosing reusables and products in better packaging. And we should all keep recycling our paper, boxes, cans, and glass, because that actually works.
8. What is the problem with recycled plastic?
A. It costs too much to produce.
B. It can hardly be selected out.
C. It is generally of poor quality.
D. It can’t be stored in large numbers.
9. What is the plastics industry trying to do?
A. To compete with the tobacco industry.
B. To cut down the cost of recycling plastic.
C. To uncover the lie of the tobacco industry.
D. To prove the possibility of recycling plastic.
10. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. Traditional recycling proves to be safer.
B. Chemical recycling turns out to be a failure.
C. Chemical recycling can save energy resources.
D. Traditional recycling can deal with limited waste.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To show the difficulty in recycling plastic.
B. To introduce a new way of recycling plastic.
C. To stress the importance of recycling plastic.
D. To call for a ban on single-use plastic products.

Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese writer Liu Cixin. Until four years ago, Liu worked full-time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu’s imagination took flight. He did what he might never have the chance to do in real life — wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit planets light-years away.
But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably hadn’t expected that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize, in 2015. Perhaps neither did he think that former US president Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, nor that on Nov 9 in Washington DC, he would win the 2018 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It’s the first time a Chinese writer has ever won the award.
In his acceptance speech, Liu said that he owed his imagination to Arthur C. Clarke (1917 — 2008), a famous UK sci-fi author. He said that reading Clarke’s 1968 classic novel 2001: A Space Odyssey in the early 1980s had a great effect on him.
“My mind opened up like never before. I felt like a narrow river finally seeing the sea,” Liu said. “That night, in my eyes, the starry sky was completely different from the past. For the first time in my life, I was awed (充满敬畏的) by the mystery of the universe.”
But no matter how far away Liu’s imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay rational (理性的). In The Three-Body Problem, for example, Liu tells a tale of aliens invading Earth. But unlike other alien stories, Liu talks more about relationships between civilizations, rules of survival, and the meanings of life. And in The Wandering Earth, Liu looks ahead to the day when our solar system comes to an end and humans have to look for a new place to live. However, all his visions and solutions are based on “hard science”. Liu’s works aren’t simply daydreams.
12. What do we know about Liu Cixin?
A. He became a full-time writer when he was young.
B. He is the first Asian to win the Arthur Clarke Award.
C. He is the first Chinese winner of the Hugo Award.
D. He dreamed about wandering in space from childhood.
13. Liu Cixin’s words are used mainly to show ___________.
A. his feeling after reading Clarke’s work B. his love of reading science fiction
C. his interest in mysteries of the universe D. his confusion when he started writing
14. Why did the author mention The Three-Body Problem and The Wandering Earth?
A. To prove that Liu Cixin’s works relate science to reality.
B. To explain how Liu Cixin came up with his ideas.
C. To show that Liu Cixin has a powerful imagination.
D. To compare the different writing styles in the two books.
15. What’s the text mainly about?
A. Liu Cixin’s contributions to science fiction. B. Liu Cixin’s achievements and writing style.
C. How Liu Cixin became a sci-fi writer. D. How Liu Cixin started a new sci-fi style.

Letter writing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. It probably began with the little notes I would write to my mother. My mother, also, always insisted I write my own thank-you letters for Christmas and birthday presents. ____17____.

52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。本部分请作答于答题卷2。
On Saturday, we gathered at the hall to witness the award ceremony for the senior scouts(童子军). Receiving an award on such a day was a great honor for any scout, and all desired to be the scout selected to give the summary of the year’s activities for the association.
I was not the one selected to give the summary and for that, I was grateful. I could hardly stand in front of a large crowd to make a speech, but Sean could. He was selected to do the honor because he was the President of the Boy Scouts. My job was much simpler. Being the Vice-President, I was very much behind the scenes, content to ensure that everything was in smooth running order.
It was an hour to go before the ceremony began, and I had put the finishing touches to the stage. Walking down the stage, I saw my teammates in a state of panic(恐慌).When they saw me, they ran to me to tell me that Sean met with a traffic accident and would not make it to the award ceremony. Someone else had to give the summary. All of them looked hopefully at me, and I could feel my knees beginning to collapse.
All their arguments against my unwillingness were reasonable. I had a copy of the speech as well as the benefit of having seen Sean rehearse(排练)it. I was the Vice-President and therefore should take his place. Finally, I was firmly told not to turn it down any longer and they said that they were convinced that I would do the right thing. I sank down onto the floor, totally shocked by the situation.
I knew I was not a confident speaker, and the thought of presenting a summary in front of so many distinguished guests horrified me. To think that the fame of the scouts would take a beating because of me! The burden of responsibility troubled me greatly.
But there was really no way out of the situation. In the end, I quickly rehearsed the speech and got ready to go on stage for the presentation. I looked calm, but inside I was a trembling. Although they kept encouraging me, I still felt very worried that my poor performance would cost us the opportunity to win an award. Soon after, I was called to do the presentation. Having butterflies in my stomach, I walked onto the stage.
注意:
1.续写词数应为80到100词;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As I stood on the stage, my heart beat violently.

【答案】 How I’ll help the earth
With the improvement of our living standard, the world is becoming more advanced. At the same time, it also brings about many problems. Therefore, it is particularly important to protect the Earth.
From my point of view, I think it useful to lead a low-carbon life. Firstly, when we have a need to go out, we may as well take public transport, such as riding bikes. By riding a bike, we can not only exercise our body but also protect our environment. Besides, as for green living, we can sort the garbage. In this way, garbage won’t be thrown casually and our surroundings will become more and more friendly and beautiful.
Protect the Earth, and everyone is responsible! Only one of us is dedicated to their own little effort, we will be able to make tomorrows’ home more beautiful.

As I stood on the stage, my heart beat violently. My face turned pale, and my mind went blank. I could not remember what I was supposed to say. I was at a loss what to do when I saw my teammates smiling at me with trustful looks. It was then that I realized that I should try my best for our team. Instantly, I reorganized my thoughts, and began to speak into the microphone. When I was finished, all my teammates stood up and applauded loudly.
