Passage 2
Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage (选择最恰当的单词或词语完成短文)
Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries. Have a look in your fridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check the origins(来源) of the food. Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand, or potatoes from Egypt? You will probably be surprised how 1 food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from “field to plate”, is called “food miles”. A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer’s field to the person who buys the food. Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer (消费者). Why is this, and what are the effects (影响) of these long distances?
In the past, farmers sold their food in the local market, so the food didn’t have to travel very far. The consumers also did not travel very far, because they went to their local market to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and consumers. However, there were some 2 . For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally. In addition, they could only get food that was in season. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are 3 in winter if we want.
Some countries have to import (进口) most of their food. This is because they have difficult climates. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), for example, gets 85% of its food from other countries. 4 food made in the UAE often uses imported materials.

First of all, because food travels such long distances, we need more planes, lorries, and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol, so there is more pollution and more global (全球的) warming. 6 food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty. Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journey. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer. Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces the amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food.

Passage 3
Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
The Japanese are well known to have some of the longest life expectancies (长寿) in the world. They also enjoy the lowest obesity (肥胖症) rate in the developed countries. What’s their secret? Their healthy diet contributes a lot.
An important feature of the Japanese diet is the visual appeal (视觉吸引) of food. Food with attractive appearance is presented on pretty little dishes and plates. This way of dining encourages you to “eat” with your eyes, by enjoying the beauty of the food. The result is that you slow down to taste every bite, which means eating less, because it gives your brain time to realize you’re full.
In Japan, food is served on separate small plates and bowls instead of on one big plate. Diners take turns having a little taste of everything. Research shows that when we’re served more, we tend to eat it—whether we are hungry or not. Serving smaller portions (量) may be one of the best secrets for healthy eating and weight loss. We can control the amount we eat in that way.
Japanese prefer fresh vegetables and fruits. Lots of fresh vegetables and fruits are eaten daily in the Japanese diet. Japan is kind of a “vegetable-crazed” (嗜蔬菜如命的) nation. When Japanese women were asked which home-cooked meals they most loved to prepare for their families, “mixed vegetable simmered (炖) in soup” came out on top. Green beans, onions, tomatoes, green peppers, cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes all have a place in the Japanese diet. Vegetables are served simmered in soup, stir-fried in a small bit of oil or lightly steamed. All these methods keep a maximum amount of nutrition.
Japanese eat a lot of fish. Japan account for (占……比例) only 2% of the world’s population, but its people eat 10% of the world’s fish. Fish, especially fatty fish, for example, salmon and tuna (金枪鱼) are Japanese favorites. Eating a lot of fish helps them to reduce the risk of heart disease.
1.What lowest rate do Japanese have in the developed countries of the world?
2.What is an important feature of the Japanese diet?
3.What is the advantage for serving food on separate small plates and bowls?
4.Food is not served on one big plate in Japan, is it?
5.Why do Japanese people eat a lot of fish?
6.What is your opinion about the Japanese diet?

One of Allen's ankles was injured one month before his first time to compete in a marathon. This meant he could not run or train for two weeks. Yet, Allen made up his mind to go ahead.
Allen remembers back to his first year in the school. He was only seven at that time. In his first P. E. class, his teacher required them to run laps and then hit a ball. He didn't do either well. He was later told that he was "not athletic"—he had no talent in sports.
The idea that he was not athletic went with him for years. When he started running in his thirties, he realized running marathon was not about competition or whether he was physically strong and active. He thought that .
The night before his first marathon, he dreamed that he couldn't even find the finish line. He woke up sweating (冒汗) and nervous, but ready to prove something to himself.

At mile 3, Allen passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, he became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. When he felt the pain, he tried to slow down and walked a bit and then ran again.
As Allen approached mile 25—near the finish line, he saw his wife waving a sign to encourage him. She is Allen's biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 5 a.m. or questioned his money on running.
Allen was one of the final runners to finish. But he finished! And he also got a medal. In fact, he got the same medal as the one that the man who got in first place.

Passage 3
Anything is Possible
We caught up with 16-year-old Australian world champion climber Angie Scarth-Johnson to find out how she had gotten to this point in her life.
Q: What got you into climbing?
A: It was my mum’s fear of me hurting myself. Like many kids, I was always climbing trees. From the age of three, I thought anything that looked climbable needed to be climbed. I started to have accidents that sometimes led to me making hospital visits. Then when I was seven, mum finally found the solution to my strange climbing addiction (嗜好)—a climbing gym. And it changed my life.
Q: You were only nine when you climbed a grade (攀岩难度路线) . What do you make of that?
A: That’s one of the most memorable moments of my life. It’s hard to explain how significant (意义重大的) achieving a grade 31 at nine is. It requires physical strength kids rarely have. Now, as an experienced climber, I know how difficult it was to believe a nine-year-old could do it. When I climbed as grade 31, I never thought of it as being unachievable — it was just a challenge. And it was the moment in which I felt anything was possible. I reflect on this when something starts to feel impossible now.
Q: 5 ?
A: I tried many sports but I never got that feeling of freedom that climbing can give to me. I’m in complete control of my mind. I know what I must do and during that period of time, my surroundings disappear. I can only feel the movement of my body; the only sounds I’m aware of are the birds, my steady breath and maybe a slight breeze. When I’m finally able to reach the top, it is a feeling like no other.
Q: What advice do you have for new climbers?
A: Make an ambitious goal and just go for it. I’d never be in this position if I held back. Go beyond expectations and continue to believe it’s possible even if it’s never been done before. And this mindset (思维模式) can be used throughout all aspects of your life.
1.What did Angie like to do when she was a kid?
2.What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
3.Why does achieving a grade 31 seem impossible for a nine-year-old?
4.How did Angie feel after she had successfully climbed a grade 31?
5.Fill in the blank in the article.
6.Why did Angie become successful? (give at least 2 reasons)

Passage 3
Allen's First Marathon (马拉松)
Shortly after crossing the star line, his shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So Allen stopped to tie them. Not the start he wanted!
Allen made up his mind to be himself and moved forward. He can now call himself a real winner.

【分析】Allen曾经被认为不适合运动,但在他30多岁时他带伤完成了人生的第一场马拉松,虽然是最后一名,但他证明了自己。
1.根据第一段第一句“One of Allen's ankles was injured one month before his first time to compete in a marathon.”可知,Allen的脚踝在他第一场马拉松比赛前一个月受伤了,故填Yes, he was.
2.根据第一段最后一句“Yet, Allen made up his mind to go ahead.”可知,在受伤后Allen下定决心继续前进,即继续参加比赛,故填His decision was to go ahead.

【答案】1.She liked to climb trees. 2.A climbing gym. 3.Because it requires physical strength kids rarely have. 4.She felt anything was possible. 5.Why do you like climbing? 6.Because she made an ambitious goal and never held back. She believes anything is possible even if it’s never been done before.
