B For the 70 percent of the world's population without any chance of using electric washing machines, keeping up with laundry takes up a lot of time. And it is often a painful physical task. The task falls unreasonably to women and girls, who can spend 20 hours a week washing clothes, often without electricity or running water. London engineer Navjot Sawhney, however, has come up with an idea: a portable and lightweight washing machine that is similar to a plastic drum. It also does double duty as a dryer, and costs around $60. 31- year- old Sawhney calls it the Divya, after the woman who inspired the project—his former next- door neighbour in South India, where he spent a year volunteering after leaving his job as an engineer at high- end vacuum (真空吸尘器) maker Dyson. “When I got to know Divya, I was so sad about all the unpaid work she needed to do—cleaning clothes,” says Sawhney. In 2018, he returned to the United Kingdom to found “The Washing Machine Project”, which is developing a washing solution that will be affordable, portable and accessible for everyone, everywhere. After a few months of developing a model, he received some money from Oxfam's Iraq Response Innovation Lab. Since March 2019, more than 150 Divyas have been given out to refugees in Iraq through non- profit partners. “The response was great,” Sawhney says. His goal is to deliver 8, 000 machines in 10 countries over the next three years. By saving 75 percent of the time and 50 percent of the water required to wash clothes, he says, women and girls will be freer to accept education. Aside from the Divya, Sawhney has also worked on making fuel- efficient cookstoves, and plans to develop refrigerators, conditioners, and lighting. Sawhney sees the world's growing refugee crisis as a call for innovation: “There is a huge need for appliances that make life better for people.” 4. What did Navjot Sawhney do to help the women in India? A. He volunteered to wash clothes for them. B. He provided them with free access to education. C. He called on people in his community to donate clothes. D. He worked out a solution by inventing a washing machine. 5. What inspired Navjot Sawhney to found the project? A. His neighbour's experience. B. His previous work in Dyson. C. The support of a science lab. D. The request of refugees in Iraq. 6. What can we infer about the project in Paragraph 3? A. It is highly praised. B. It focuses on education. C. It has created many jobs. D. It has earned a lot of money. 7. Which of the following can best describe Navjot Sawhney? A. Selfless and honest. B. Helpful and serious. C. Caring and creative. D. Thoughtful and strict. C Science is a process that builds upon existing theories and knowledge by continuously revising them. Every aspect of scientific knowledge can be questioned, including the general rules of thinking that appear to be most certain. So why is science trustworthy if it is always changing? If tomorrow we will no longer see the world as Newton or Einstein found it to be, why should we take seriously today’s scientific description of the world? The answer is simple: Because at any given moment of our history, this description of the world is the best we have. The fact that it can be made better can’t diminish (降低) the fact that it is a useful instrument for understanding the world. Consider a folk healer’s herbal medicine. Can we say this treatment is “scientific”? Yes, if it is proven to be effective, even if we have no idea why it works. In fact, quite a few common medications used today have their origin in folk treatments, and we are still not sure how they work. This does not imply that folk treatments are generally effective. To the contrary, many of them are not. What distinguishes scientific medicine is the readiness to seriously test a treatment and to be ready to change our minds if something is shown not to work. A research doctor in a modern hospital must be ready to change his theory if a more effective way of understanding illness, or treating it, becomes available. What makes modern science uniquely powerful is its refusal to believe that it already possesses (掌握) ultimate truth. The reliability of science is based not on certainty but on a complete absence of certainty. That is to say: the ideas about science that we now have the strongest support for have no protection to rely on, and they are only an open invitation to the whole world to prove them unfounded. 8. Why does the author raise the two questions in paragraph 1? A. To add some fun. B. To express doubts. C. To introduce the topic. D. To provide background. 9. What can we learn about today’s scientific description of the world? A. It can be timeless. B. It can be improved. C It is of little value. D. It is the best at any moment. 10. What is the author’s attitude toward folk treatment? A. Positive. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Indifferent. 11. What is the main idea of paragraph 4? A. It is unwise to believe in science. B. Too much uncertainty lies in science. C. The foundation of science is unfounded. D. The lack of certainty makes science credible. D If you’ve long assumed that you must rid yourself of delicious foods to be healthy, a new study offers encouraging news: Eating dark chocolate has been associated with a reduced risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The research did not prove that the chocolate itself was responsible for this health benefit; it could be something else about the people who ate dark chocolate that made them less likely to develop diabetes. And dark chocolate should not be considered a “magic bullet” for preventing diabetes, said Dr. Sun, a professor of nutrition from Harvard. But the findings do build on a larger body of research demonstrating links between dark chocolate consumption and reduced risks of certain health conditions like high blood pressure. “The results”, Dr. Sun added, “suggest that a little dark chocolate can be part of a healthy diet”. In the mid-1980s and early 1990s, researchers began studying three groups of mostly white health professionals. Every four years, the more than 190,000 participants completed detailed diet questionnaires, which asked how often they consumed chocolate. Beginning in 2006 and 2007, depending on the group, the researchers tweaked (调整) the questionnaires to ask how often participants ate dark chocolate and milk chocolate. They followed the participants’ health for up to 34 years. During that time, nearly 19,000 participants developed Type 2 diabetes. After adjusting for other aspects of their lifestyles, such as exercise, alcohol consumption, as well as their age and family history of diabetes, the researchers found that people who consumed at least five servings of any type of chocolate per week had a 10 percent lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes compared with those who rarely or never ate chocolate. But when they drilled down into the data from the nearly 112,000 people who provided details on the types of chocolate they consumed, the researchers found an even more striking result: Those who consumed at least five servings of dark chocolate per week had a 21 percent lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than those who consumed dark chocolate less than once per month. 12. Which statement would Dr. Sun agree with? A. Dark chocolate alone can not prevent diabetes. B. Dark chocolate can be eaten in large quantities. C Chocolate is likely to directly prevent Type 2 diabetes. D. Milk chocolate and dark one have equal health benefits. 13. How did the researchers carry out the study? A. By tracking people with a family history of diabetes. B. By observing participants’ chocolate-eating habits. C By performing experiments and making comparisons. D. By conducting surveys and making adjustments. 14. In which section of a newspaper might you read this article? A. Diet & Culture. B. Health & Science. C. Food & Lifestyle. D. Sports & Exercise. 15. Which can be the best title of the passage? A. Dark Chocolate: A New Cure for Diabetes B. Dark Chocolate: A Promising Healthy Diet C. Could Dark Chocolate Reduce Your Risk of Diabetes? D. What’s the Link Between Dark Chocolate and Health? (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) Tips for Foreign Students in China China is a very popular destination for foreign students today. ___16___ At this point, the most popular choices for study are management and technical courses, though the interest in other disciplines is growing every minute. D 5. A 6. A 7. 根据第一段的 “London engineer Navjot Sawhney, however, has come up with an idea: a portable and lightweight washing machine that is similar to a plastic drum.(然而,伦敦的工程师纳夫乔特·索赫尼想出了一个想法:一台类似于塑料鼓的便携式轻质洗衣机。)” 根据第二段的 “31- year- old Sawhney calls it the Divya, after the woman who inspired the project— his former next- door neighbour in South India, where he spent a year volunteering after leaving his job as an engineer at high- end vacuum maker Dyson.(31岁的索尼称之为“Divya”,因为这个项目的灵感来源——他在印度南部的前邻居,在辞去高端真空制造商戴森的工程师工作后,他在那里花了一年时间做志愿者。)” 故选A。 根据第三段的 “Since March 2019, more than 150 Divyas have been given out to refugees in Iraq through non- profit partners. ‘The response was great, ’ Sawhney says.(自2019年3月以来,已有150多名迪维亚人通过非营利性合作伙伴发放给了在伊拉克的难民。索赫尼说,反响很好。)” 可知,这款洗衣机反响很好,由此推知,该项目得到很高的评价。故选A。 C。 C Science is a process that builds upon existing theories and knowledge by continuously revising them. C To introduce the topic. D. To provide background. 9. What can we learn about today’s scientific description of the world? A. It can be timeless. B. It can be improved. C. It is of little value. C 9. B 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“Science is a process that builds upon existing theories and knowledge by continuously revising them.(科学是一个建立在现有理论和知识基础上并不断修正它们的过程)”及“So why is science trustworthy if it is always changing? If tomorrow we will no longer see the world as Newton or Einstein found it to be, why should we take seriously today’s scientific description of the world?(那么,既然科学一直处于变化之中,为何它还值得人们信赖呢?倘若未来我们看待世界的方式,不再与牛顿或爱因斯坦的认知相同,我们又为何要重视当下的科学对世界的描述呢?)”结合第二段中“The answer is simple: Because at any given moment of our history, this description of the world is the best we have.(答案很简单:因为在历史的任何特定时刻,这个对世界的描述都是我们所拥有的最好的描述)”可知,作者在首段提出问题是为了引出“科学为什么可靠”这一话题。 根据第二段中“Because at any given moment of our history, this description of the world is the best we have. The fact that it can be made better can’t diminish the fact that it is a useful instrument for understanding the world.(因为在历史的任何特定时刻,这个对世界的描述都是我们所拥有的最好的描述。它可以被改进的事实,并不能削弱它是一个理解世界的有效工具这一事实)”可知,我们今天对世界的科学描述是当前最好的,并且是可以被改进的。故选B。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“In fact, quite a few common medications used today have their origin in folk treatments, and we are still not sure how they work. This does not imply that folk treatments are generally effective. To the contrary, many of them are not. What distinguishes scientific medicine is the readiness to seriously test a treatment and to be ready to change our minds if something is shown not to work.(事实上,如今使用的不少常见药物都起源于民间疗法,而我们至今仍不清楚它们的作用原理。 根据第四段中“What makes modern science uniquely powerful is its refusal to believe that it already possesses ultimate truth. The reliability of science is based not on certainty but on a complete absence of certainty.(现代科学之所以独特而强大,是因为它拒绝相信已经掌握了终极真理。科学的可靠性不是基于确定性,而是基于完全缺乏确定性)”可知,本段核心观点是:科学的可信性恰恰源于其不认为自己是绝对确定的,即缺乏确定性让科学具有可信度。故选D。 D If you’ve long assumed that you must rid yourself of delicious foods to be healthy, a new study offers encouraging news: Eating dark chocolate has been associated with a reduced risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. C. Chocolate is likely to directly prevent Type 2 diabetes. D. Milk chocolate and dark one have equal health benefits. 13. How did the researchers carry out the study? A. By tracking people with a family history of diabetes. B. By observing participants’ chocolate-eating habits. C. By performing experiments and making comparisons. D. By conducting surveys and making adjustments. 14. In which section of a newspaper might you read this article? A. Diet & Culture. B. Health & Science. C. Food & Lifestyle. D. Sports & Exercise. 15 Which can be the best title of the passage? A. Dark Chocolate: A New Cure for Diabetes B. Dark Chocolate: A Promising Healthy Diet C.
