Last year, I moved from London to the African grasslands because my husband Robin took a new job there. Robin was able to work, but the language barrier (障碍) didn’t allow me to do so. With few people around our home, I felt bored. I turned to nature and learned about many kinds of local birds.
One morning in September, after a bad rainstorm, I found a baby bird on the ground outside of our home. His eyes were closed and he was shaking. The poor little thing had been left behind by his flock (鸟群). Clearly he was too young to be able to live on his own. I placed him in a cardboard box. I stayed up all night that day to study how to care for him.
The next day, he woke with his mouth wide-open with a sharp hunger call. I fed him termites (白蚁) and chirped (叽喳叫) at him. He chirped back, jumped into my hand and then fell asleep in my hand. To him, I was mama bird. ①
For 84 days, the cute little thing lived on me. Wherever I went, he would fly alongside me. He would make short flights from my hand to my head and then slide down my long hair to rest again. I never named him because he didn’t belong to me. I had to tell myself again and again that he needed to return to the wild. ②
Day by day, he was stronger, more confident and flying farther from me. His flock had returned to the grasslands. ③
Before I flew back to England in November for the holiday season, Robin and I had decided that he should be allowed outside to fly daily. Robin took him out to the flock three times. On the fourth day, the bird flew away with them. ④
When I returned, in January, I would watch out for him whenever birds flew past. Every one seemed to be him but no one was him. I would still cry when I thought of him. I wrote our story into a book, Fledgling. That, along with the lesson that any tiny animal can make a difference, will make me remember him forever.
29.The writer learned about many different local birds because _________.
A.it was her job to study birds B.her husband told her to do so
C.she had nothing else interesting to do D.she wanted to look after the baby bird
30.Where can we put “It was time for him to go.” most properly?

32.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.My job in Africa B.Ways to take care of a bird

Last Sunday was Mom’s 40th birthday. I wanted to give her a special gift, not a store bought one. Dad suggested a necklace (项链), but I said, “No—I’ll make it myself. It has more love.” So I decided to make a photo frame (相框) with our family photo from last summer.
I found materials at home: thin wood from the garage (Dad used it for a shelf), white glue, colorful paper, scissors, markers, and rose stickers—Mom loves roses.
At first, I tried cutting the wood into a 20cm square with small scissors, but it slipped. I got angry, then remembered Mom’s words: “Be more patient.” I asked Dad for a small saw. He taught me to use it safely, and we cut the square. I sanded the edges (边缘), so Mom wouldn’t hurt her hands.
Then I decorated it: I glued colorful paper on the frame, drew small flowers with markers, stuck rose stickers on the corners, and wrote “I love you, Mom!” in big letters. I also learned to fold three paper hearts and glued them on. It took two hours—my hands were sticky, but I didn’t care.
When Mom came home, I gave her the frame. She held it, looked for a long time, then cried happy tears. She hugged me tight: “This is the most beautiful gift! I’ll put it on my desk.” Later, she sent a photo of it to Grandma.
DIY gifts aren’t easy—you make mistakes and spend time, but they’re special because of your heart. Try one for your family’s birthday; it just needs to show care. I’m already thinking about Dad’s birthday gift now!
33.What tool did the writer use to cut the wood finally?
A.A knife. B.A saw. C.Scissors. D.Dad’s tool.
34.Why did Mom cry when she got the frame?
A.Because she didn’t like the rose stickers.
B.Because she hurt her hands on the wood edges.
C.Because she was sad the frame was not perfect.
D.Because she was moved (感动的) by the writer’s love.
35.What does “sanded” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Cut the wood into a square. B.Stuck colorful paper on the wood.
C.Made the edges smooth with sandpaper. D.Drew flowers on the wood with markers.
36.What does the writer tell us in the last paragraph?
A.DIY gifts are special because of love. B.Family birthdays need expensive gifts.
C.Dad’s birthday gift will be a photo frame. D.DIY gifts are easy to make and save time.

People and dogs have been living together for hundreds of years. When did dogs and people become friends? Where did dogs come from?
A group of scientists tried to answer these questions. They just finished a study about the history of dogs. In the study, they looked at the DNA of dogs all over the world and found that dogs, like humans, shared DNA with their family members. The scientists put together a big family tree for dogs. It went all the way back to the animal’s beginning.
In this way, scientists learned about the history of dogs. The first dogs lived in Asia. They were born about 33,000 years ago. At first, there were only about 6,400 of them. Their parents were wolves.
The new study answers many questions. It raises some too. For example, what caused wolves in Asia to become dogs all those years ago?
One idea is that their DNA slowly changed and the wolves became dogs in the end. As time went by, dogs became “man’s best friends”. Or it could happen the other way around. It was possible that some wolves started living with people before they became dogs. Living with people led to many changes to these wolves. It changed their DNA, so their offspring (后代) became dogs. In other words, it was possible that the wolves were our friends before they became dogs.
By studying DNA, scientists now have a much better understanding of the history of dogs.
▲ . How exactly dogs came to be our friends is still unknown.
37.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By telling a story. B.By giving an example. C.By asking questions. D.By making a comparison.
38.What can we learn about the first dogs according to the passage?
A.They lived in Africa. B.They were born 6,400 years ago.
C.Their parents were wolves. D.There are about 33,000 dogs.
39.What does the underlined word “some” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.wolves B.dogs C.ideas D.questions
40.Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ”?
A.However, there is still much to learn
B.But we still know little about wolves’ history
C.Because we’ve learned about dogs’ friends

五、阅读与表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Police dogs are given special training to help the police with their work. Many different types of dogs can be trained to do this work, but the best known ones are German shepherds and bloodhounds. In Britain, police dogs usually have a 13-week training course and many dogs fail. Not all dogs make good police dogs. They must be completely trustworthy and honest. Most police dogs live with their handlers as part of the family, but they are not pets. They are working dogs and they have a job to do.
Police dogs are trained to chase and hold people who are trying to get away from the police. Police dogs are not vicious animals. They are trained to hold on to people until their handler tells them to let go.
Police dogs often go into dangerous places and they are given special vests to protect them from knife and gun attacks.
Dogs are not only trained to chase and catch criminals. They are also used for following suspects or finding missing people. This is because some dogs, such as bloodhounds, have a very good sense of smell and can be trained to recognize certain types of smells. Some dogs are used to find survivors after earthquakes or explosions and some are specially trained to find dead bodies.
In many countries dogs are used in airports to check luggage for drugs and bombs. Labradors, spaniels and beagles are used for this because they are friendly dogs and people are not afraid of them.
61.How long does the training course for police dogs usually last in Britain?
62.What protects police dogs when they go into dangerous places?
63.Are people afraid of dogs like Labradors, spaniels and beagles when they are checking luggage in airports? Why?

例文:
Dear Henry,
How is everything going? I like wild animals very much. I want to introduce my favourite wild animal to you.
I like pandas the most. They eat bamboo and mostly live in the mountains of Sichuan, China. These cute animals with black and white fur are so lovely! But they have lots of troubles. First, people’s actions, like building roads, make their living spaces smaller. Second, it’s hard for them to find enough bamboo to eat when it dies off sometimes.
To help them, we can build more nature parks and grow more bamboo. Also, we shouldn’t buy things made from wild animals.
What kind of wild animal do you like? Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
