Last Friday Britain’s Prince William announced the winners of this year’s Earthshot Prize. The prize is meant to encourage new ideas and rapid action to help protect the planet. Below are parts of this year’s prize-winning projects in each category.
Protect and Restore Nature
Kheyti won the prize for protecting and restoring nature with its “Greenhouse-in-a-box” idea. Kheyti is already working with 1, 000 farmers across India, which is one of the most climate-affected countries in the world. The company says the greenhouses allow farmers to use 90% less water and produce seven times as much food. Kheyti hopes to get its greenhouses to 50,000 farmers by 2027.
Clean Our Air
Charlot Magayi won the prize for cleaning the air. Ms. Magayi developed a stove (炉子) that uses a fuel that’s cheaper and pollutes far less than charcoal stoves. Currently, over 200,000 of her Clean Stoves are being used in Kenya.
Build a Waste-Free World
A London-based company called Notpla(for “Not Plastic”)won the prize for building a waste-free world. They’ve created a plastic substitute(替代品)from plants found in the ocean. Unlike most plastic, their products break down naturally with no microplastics. Notpla believes their products can help end the plastic pollution that’s filling landfills and polluting oceans.
Fix Our Climate
The Earthshot Prize for working toward fixing our climate went to a company called 44.01 from Oman. 44.01 has come up with a way to turn polluting carbon dioxide(CO2)into a rock called peridotite. Once the CO2 has been turned into rock, it can no longer be released into the atmosphere again. The method that 44.01 uses is fast, cheap and permanent.
1. What is the aim of the Earthshot Prize?
A. To offer practical advice on global warming.
B. To find solutions to the environmental problems.
C. To develop a strategic partnership with all parties.
D. To encourage literary creations of the British people.
2. Where are Kheyti’s greenhouses widely used?
A. In India. B. In Kenya. C. In the UK. D. In Oman.

More than 20 years ago, Yung-Chi Cheng, a Yale professor in drug development for cancer, had a pioneering idea: what if he could unlock the potential of ancient Chinese medicines for treating cancer? What if he could design botanical drugs that would make traditional cancer treatments work better? No one had done it before. Fellow researchers and experts advised him to change course, because developing botanical drugs was too complicated and too risky. But Cheng didn’t let the idea go.
Now, in a landmark moment in cancer research, Cheng and research partners are launching the first international clinical trial for a botanical drug, YIV-906. Shwu-Hucy Liu, a postdoctoral researcher in Cheng’s Yale lab, spent hours leafing through ancient Chinese texts at Yale’s library seeking the properties of Chinese herbs. She returned with Huang Qin Tang, a 1,800-year-old treatment for stomach illnesses, based on which the team developed a drug and tested it on one thousand mice.
What followed were years of additional testing of the drug’s effectiveness for a range of cancers in multiple human studies involving over 200 patients. The positive effects displayed again and again, YIV-906 not only reduced the side effects of radiation treatment, but also led to faster recovery and longer survival rates.
All they need now are larger data sets. When the results of the international trial are available about three years from now, YIV-906 may find itself next in a long line of breakthrough drugs developed from natural products, which includes a malaria (疟疾) treatment developed from the Chinese herb qinghao, the discovery of which led to a Nobel Prize for chemist Tu Youyou.
It has been a long journey, but if Cheng and his team are successful, it could create a new approach to treating cancer. They called the new approach “WE” medicine, a combination of Western medicine and Eastern medicine. “It’s a totally new model. I’ve met with a lot of doubt, but think the results will speak for themselves,” Cheng said.
4. What did fellow researchers initially think of Cheng’s research?
A. Creative. B. Comprehensive. C. Conventional. D. Challenging.
5. Why did Liu refer to ancient Chinese texts?
A. She wanted to question ancient treatment methods.
B. She desired to find inspiration for treating diseases.
C. She tried to document the history of Chinese herbs.
D. She determined to find a cure for stomach illnesses.
6. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Steps of the drug testing. B. The application of YIV-906.
C. Effects of the clinical trial. D. The effectiveness of YIV-906.
7. Why does the author mention Chinese herb qinghao?
A. To illustrate the value of botanical drugs.
B. To advocate the adoption of “WE” medicine.
C. To praise Tu’s contributions to drug development.
D. To highlight its success in medicine development.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. D 7. A

Middle-school aged children who use the Internet, social media or video games for more than an hour each day during the school week have significantly lower grades and test scores, according to a study at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.
Researchers say the findings give parents and children a threshold for using entertainment-related technology-no more than one hour daily on school days and four hours a day on weekends.
“Interactive technology is widely used to improve children’s educational access and achievement,” said lead author Vivien. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, technology is important for remote learning. But there’s a growing concern that too much technology use, particularly for entertainment, may affect children’s educational development by holding them back from learning activities.”
In the research, about 10,000 first-year middle school students were surveyed and followed. Their average age was 13.5 years. The results showed that children who used the Internet for entertainment four or more hours daily were four times more likely to skip school than those who didn’t. Boys used interactive technology for entertainment more than girls. Boys also performed worse and showed lower school engagement levels than girls.
“Such findings are important, particularly in the recent online learning in countries throughout the world,” said Vivien. “In a learning environment mixed with the Internet, it is easy for children to move across educational and entertainment platforms during learning to other activities.”
Vivien said children in study who used a bit of technology experienced less boredom at school, potentially due to the positive effects of participation in social media for students’ relationship building and advancing children’s cognitive (认知的) development.
The findings suggest that parents place time limits on their children’s interactive technology use, and that parents and teachers should help children to develop effective time management and self-regulation skills to reduce their dependence on technology.
8. What’s the finding of the study?
A. The Internet is important for children’s learning.
B. More than an hour online a day hurts the learning.
C. School kids should keep away from the Internet.
D. Staying online does more harm to boys than girls.
9. What does the underlined word “threshold” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Punishment. B. Reward. C. Guideline. D. Target.
10. What conclusion did Vivien draw from the study?
A. Children under 13 should be kept from online. B. Schools have the duty to limit online lessons.
C. Online learning helps children manage time. D. A bit use of technology is helpful to children.
11. Where is this text most likely from?
A. An educational journal. B. An entertainment magazine.
C. A technology report. D. A tour guidebook.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. A

Feeling a bit bored? It could be just what you need to produce your best ideas, excite your creativity or simply give your brain a rest.
Nowadays, in the age of round-the-clock entertainment, it’s (technically) trickier to be bored. If the show you’re watching has lost its spark, you can easily amuse yourself on social media without even leaving the sofa. But that’s not necessarily a good thing. Feeling disengaged from the task in hand, or a lack of stimulation (刺激), does have its benefits, according to researchers at the University of Central Lancashire.
Being bored motivates you to search out something less boring to do. For example, if you decide there’s nothing worth watching on TV, you might choose to switch off and take up a new hobby. This, according to researchers, can explain why the lockdowns of the past two years saw a surge (激增) in creativity among people stuck at home from banana-bread-making to picking up a paintbrush for the first time since childhood.
But what about those times when you have no choice but to stick with the boring situation, waiting for a bus, for instance? The good news is that the boredom you’re feeling now could spark your creativity later, says a 2019 study published in the Academy of Management Discoveries journal. People who’d taken part in a bean-sorting task later performed better at coming up with creative ideas than another group who’d been given something more interesting to do first.
Ultimately, don’t take it for granted that there’ll always be something close at hand to entertain us. With boredom, we will not run the risk of becoming boring ourselves.
12. What does the author imply in paragraph 2?
A. Wondering mind can be healthy.
B. Social media can surely entertain us.
C. Being bored may be something good.
D. Being involved in the task is beneficial.
13. Why was the surge in creativity seen recently?
A. People were stimulated by boredom.
B. People were better equipped at home.
C. People had more hobbies to choose from.
D. People were more concerned about mental being.
14. What is the purpose of the bean-sorting task in the 2019 study?
A. To create a boring situation. B. To reduce people’s boredom.
C. To make a funny performance. D. To show an entertainment at hand.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. What is the point of creativity?
B. Are we more easily bored nowadays?
C. How can we deal with daily boredom?
D. Does boredom make us more creative?
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了通过一系列的研究实验发现无聊可以激发创造力。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Feeling disengaged from the task in hand, or a lack of stimulation , does have its benefits, according to researchers at the University of Central Lancashire.(中央兰开夏大学的研究人员表示,对手头工作感到心不在焉或缺乏刺激确实有好处。)”可推断,作者在第二段中暗示了无聊可能是件好事。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“For example, if you decide there’s nothing worth watching on TV, you might choose to switch off and take up a new hobby. This, according to researchers, can explain why the lockdowns of the past two years saw a surge in creativity among people stuck at home from banana-bread-making to picking up a paintbrush for the first time since childhood.(例如,如果你觉得没有什么值得看的电视节目,你可以选择关掉它,培养新的爱好。研究人员表示,这可以解释为什么在过去两年的封锁中,到童年以来首次拿起画笔的人们的创造力激增。)”可知,无聊刺激了人们使得人们出现了创造力的激增。故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“People who’d taken part in a bean-sorting task later performed better at coming up with creative ideas than another group who’d been given something more interesting to do first.(那些后来参与了豆子分类任务的人比另一组先做更有趣的事情的人在想出创意方面表现得更好。)”可知,这个实验室为了证明无聊可以激发创造力,所以推断2019年研究中的豆类分类任务的目的是创造一个无聊的环境。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Feeling a bit bored? It could be just what you need to produce your best ideas, excite your creativity or simply give your brain a rest.(感觉有点无聊?它可能正是你所需要的,让你产生最好的想法,激发你的创造力,或者只是让你的大脑休息一下。)”及全文可知,本文主要介绍了通过一系列的研究实验发现无聊可以激发创造力。所以“Does boredom make us more creative?(无聊让我们更有创造力吗?)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选D。

The Price of A Dream
I grew up poor in a family with little money and few worldly goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, they could still afford a dream.
My dream was sports. By the time I was sixteen, I could crush a baseball, throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything that moved on the football field. I was also lucky: My high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who taught me the difference between sticking to a dream and just showing determination. One particular incident with Coach Jarvis changed my life forever.
It was the summer between my junior and senior years, and a friend recommended me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket-cash for hanging out with friends, certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect of a summer job was appealing, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell Coach Jarvis I wouldn’t be playing. I was fearing this, but I had to.
I stood before him with my head hanging, trying to think of the words that would explain to him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment in me.
“How much are you going to make at this job, son?” he demanded.
“Three twenty-five an hour,” I replied.
“Well,” he asked, “is $3.25 an hour the price of a dream?”
That question struck me like a flash of lightning. “A real dream is immeasurable, young man.” He sighed, patted my shoulder and strode away. With tears blurring my eyes, I clenched my fists, determined to keep pursuing my dream. From that day on, I threw myself into the baseball court, for I understood success came at a price. Finally, that moment arrived. I heard my name called in the award ceremony.
注意:
续写词数应为 80 左右;
I went on the stage to collect the prize for the best baseball player.

【答案】 I went on the stage to collect the prize for the best baseball player. My eyes swept the crowd and soon locked on Coach Jarvis, who was smiling and nodding at me proudly. With a lump in my throat, I held the trophy tightly and said in a trembling voice, “I owe this to Coach Jarvis. He once asked me if $3.25 an hour was the price of a dream. That question woke me up.” Cheers erupted as I finished my speech, and I knew my dream was just taking off.

Last Friday, Britain’s Prince William announced the winners of this year’s Earthshot Prize.

A London-based company called Notpla(for “Not Plastic”)won the prize for building a waste-free world. They’ve created a plastic substitute(替代品)from plants found in the ocean.

A. Punishment. B. Reward. C. Guideline. D. Target.
10 What conclusion did Vivien draw from the study?
A. Children under 13 should be kept from online. B. Schools have the duty to limit online lessons.
C. Online learning helps children manage time. D. A bit use of technology is helpful to children.
11. Where is this text most likely from?
A. An educational journal. B. An entertainment magazine.
C. A technology report. D. A tour guidebook.
D

注意:
续写词数应为 80 左右;
I went on the stage to collect the prize for the best baseball player.
