In another corner of the room were a gas burner (煤气灶) and a fridge. Mrs. Jones got up and walked there. She did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run now, nor did she watch her handbag, which she left behind her on the sofa. But the boy was careful to sit on the far side of the room, away from the bag, where he thought she could easily see him out of the corner of her eye if she wanted to. He did not trust the woman to trust him. And he did not trust the woman not to trust him. And he didn’t want anyone to doubt him now.
“Do you need somebody to go to the store,” asked the boy, “maybe to get some milk or something?”
“Don’t believe I do,” said the woman, “unless you just want sweet milk yourself. I’m going to make chocolate milk.”
“That will be fine.” said the boy.
Mrs. Jones heated some cooked food she had in the fridge and set the table. She didn’t ask the boy anything about where he lived, or his parents, or anything else that would embarrass him. Instead, as they ate, she told him about her job in a hotel beauty salon that stayed open late, what the work was like, and how all kinds of women came in and out. Then she cut him half of her cake. “Eat some more, son.” she said.
When they finished eating, Mrs. Jones got up and said, “Now, here, take these ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. And, next time, do not make the mistake of stealing my bag nor nobody else’s — because shoes got in this way will burn your feet. I’ve got to get my rest now. But, son, I hope you will behave yourself from now on.”
The woman led the way down the hall to the front door and opened it. “Good night! Behave yourself, boy!” she said, looking into the street as he went down the steps.
The boy wanted to say something other than “Thank you, ma’am” to Mrs. Jones, but although his mouth moved, he couldn’t even say that, as he turned at the front of the steps and looked up at the large woman in the door. Then Mrs. Jones shut the door. And the boy never saw her again.

Some people decide to stop eating meat and begin to accept a vegan (纯素食) diet because of health reasons. This way of eating avoids all animal products, including meat, fish, milk, eggs and even honey.
Making the change can be a challenge for people who often have dairy and meat in their diet, according to Dena Champion, a dietitian, an expert on diet and nutrition (营养学), from Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She added that starting a vegan diet could change your body in certain ways. It might even offer some health benefits.
Reduced body weight
Instead of high-fat proteins like bacon and beef, vegans get their protein from plant-based sources such as tofu, beans, soy milk, and so on. “This can lead to losing weight. Considering that two-thirds of Americans are overweight, this can have a positive effect on body shape and health.” says Kailey Proctor, a dietitian at St. Joseph Hospital in California.
Improved blood sugar control
Because being overweight is a major risk for developing diabetes (糖尿病), losing weight can lower that risk. There was one study from some experts published in the magazine Nutrients in 2018.The experts chose some overweight people with no history of diabetes to switch to a vegan diet. Then they followed them for 16 weeks. Improvements and better effects were seen in those people in controlling blood sugar levels.
Reduced cancer risk
There's also the chance to reduce your risk of developing cancer. “Vegan diets, when planned correctly, are also very high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. These plant-based foods have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer.” says Proctor. We should always focus on consuming whole, fresh foods as much as possible. It's important to make sure you're getting enough nutrients for your health.
23. Which one belongs to a vegan diet?
A. Meat, fish, milk. B. Eggs, honey, soy milk.
C. Tofu, beans, milk. D. Tofu, beans, soy milk.

D. The diet that may have a bad effect on people's bodies.

It’s hard to talk to dads sometimes. The roles we often expect our fathers to play—protector, provider—can make them seem impenetrable (不可理解的). That’s how it was with my dad. He came to Canada at the age of ten and settled in an immigrant community. He was never much of a talker. He rarely drank, so we didn’t get to see him loosen up after a few beers. He didn’t tell stories about himself at the dinner table or when we went for walks in the park. He was a private person and seemed to want to stay that way.
Bringing up the many questions I had about life before I was born--his early hopes and dreams, loves and heartbreaks—let alone sharing my own feelings, felt like too much for us to handle. I didn’t want to threaten the integrity (完整) of his hard shell. I had gotten used to it, and it made me feel secure.
But when my relationship and career suffered a hit a year ago at the same time, things had to change. I was facing serious questions about my own nature (本性), and I wanted to know that he had faced them, too. I needed to know how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine.
In a severe moment of desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key. An email can be crafted (心制作) slowly and carefully. I could speak at a comfortable distance and give him room to adjust. He’d be up in his office — a comfortable place filled with bookshelves, dusty CD-ROMs and piles of old newspapers. I’d be at my desk in an apartment 20 minutes away.
So I wrote to him. I told him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it, and to share something about himself, something that would give me much-needed perspective on my life, especially on relationship and career.

19. Why was the boy careful to sit on the far side of the room, away from the bag?
A. Because he was too afraid.
B. Because Mrs. Jones asked him to.
C. Because he didn’t want anyone to doubt him.
D. So that Mrs. Jones couldn’t see him out of the corner of her eye.
20. Which of the following statement is true according to the fifth paragraph?
A. The boy ate all her cake.
B. Mrs. Jones complained about her job.
C. Mrs. Jones asked the boy too many questions.
D. Mrs. Jones tried not to make the boy feel uncomfortable.
21. What does the underlined words “burn your feet” mean in the passage?
A. Hurt his feet. B. Be caught by others.

第二节(共1题,每题25分,满分25分)
71. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段, 使之构成一篇光整的短文。
注意: 1. 所编写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Two weeks later, his response showed up in my email box.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I closed the email and started to cry.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Two weeks later, his response showed up in my email box. It was a scanned three-page document. Apparently, my dad had carefully considered my message, reached back into his memory and crafted a response. In the letter, he shared his history of love, longing, self-doubt, fears and struggles in life. He also offered me some practical suggestions on how to handle my relationship and career. While reading, I got the sense that it must have been really tough for my dad to settle down in a new country at an early age. I was also impressed by the great perseverance he showed in the face of difficulty.
I closed the email and started to cry. I cried because I wished I had opened up earlier but was grateful it wasn’t too late. I cried because in the midst of my own struggles, his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end, it was so simple: I just had to hit “Send”. We’ve since had many exchanges. My problems haven’t been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better-and learning to love him more-has made the tough stuff more manageable and life sweeter. It’s hard to talk to dads sometimes, but I’m glad that I found a way to talk to mine.
