My mother didn’t come to pick me up, so I walked home alone. About 20 minutes later I came to the alleyway that leads to my house. This alleyway is known to be quite dangerous. As I was about a quarter of the way down it, I suddenly wanted to look behind me. When I looked behind, I thought I saw the figure of a man. He looked strangely familiar, a top hat, a coat which fanned out at the top and bottom and rather tall. I looked closer and a moment of fear went through my mind as I saw what looked like a long knife in his hand. I turned around and started walking faster, being careful not to run as he might chase (追) after me. It wasn’t long before I had wanted to turn around again, and when I did, he wasn’t there.
Breathed a sigh of relief and caught my breath a bit. Feeling like I must have imagined it through paranoia (妄想狂). I turned back around. I couldn’t help myself, I screamed in fright as the same figure was in front of me, only a lot, lot closer. I could clearly see the details of his clothes, the knife, and then all those reminded me of the deathly figure of the infamous Jack the Ripper (开膛手杰克). I didn’t know what to do then. Jack the Ripper died a long time ago, didn’t he? I turned on my heel and started to run but my body didn’t move. Someone was grabbing (抓住) my arm, I slowly turned my head and a horrible face frightened me. His eyes were grey and bloodshot with huge black bags below them. His skin looked as if it was burnt and sore, and his teeth were yellow, but there were cracks in them with a red stain.
I screamed again and tried to get my arm free but the man had pushed me on to the ground. He kneeled down over me and moved the knife close to my stomach. I screamed in pain as the knife cut my skin. I couldn’t lie there and let him kill me, so I bit the hand which was over my mouth and ran away from him. I ran back in the direction of my house but I forgot about my school bag which I had dropped while trying to get away. I then fell and smacked my head against the road. As everything went black, a tear came from my eye as I saw his boots stop near my side. I smiled a bit as I would not have to feel the pain as he cut my body.
To my surprise, I woke up in my bed the next morning. I thought I was dreaming and that I would have to go through that boring school day again, but as I sat up, a sharp pain cut through my stomach. I lifted up my top and saw a knife shaped wound. My mum came into my room, and saw I was awake. She said that someone had seen me fall and run to help me, I got out of bed and went downstairs to thank him. I went to shake the man’s hand, and froze in fear, when the man smiled, his teeth were yellow, and they had cracks stained with something red...

Hundreds of people attended the premiere (首映) of the movie My People, My Country at a Los Angeles cinema on Sept. 30. Waving Chinese flags in their hands, audiences sang My People, My Country together at the start of the film, its theme song that serves as a thread throughout (贯穿) the movie
The song is a patriotic (爱国的) Chinese classic, known to every family. It was first sung by singer Li Guyi in 1985. It was reworked for the movie by pop singer Faye Wong.
Made up of seven short stories from seven directors, led by Chen Kaige, the film draws on the nation’s greatest technological and cultural achievements starting with the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
Yet the film does not focus on the historical moments themselves, but rather shows events through the eyes of ordinary people who worked for them and were influenced by them.
The short story The Guiding Star, for example, follows a pair of brothers who saw the landing of the capsule of the Shenzhou XI manned spacecraft on Nov. 18, 2016 in Inner Mongolia and who were filled with pride and hope at that moment.
“If a person encounters a historical opportunity to be changed, the inspiring power generated is unbelievable,” Chen told China.org.cn. “In my story, the landing of Shenzhou XI changed the lives of two teenagers, changed their destiny and allowed them to gain new hope.”
In another short story, Going Home, Simon Yam plays a clock repairer who witnessed the return of Hong Kong from British rule to China in 1997. The actor himself has experienced the power of hope. “On the day of Hong Kong’s return, I felt it wasn’t just a return to the motherland, but the return of hearts,” he told China.org.cn. “When the flag was raised, I felt like, ‘We are home. We feel secured and assured’.”
The film certainly struck a patriotic chord with many. In a survey ranking audience satisfaction, My People, My Country came in first among 267 domestic films released since 2015. The survey was done by the China Film Art Research Center.

We all dream about things that we would like to do and things we hope to achieve in the future. But are everybody’s dreams the same? Here are some of the findings of a survey about hopes and dreams in which thousands of students across China took part.
What are the hopes of teenagers? We received several different answers to the question: what would you like to do after you finish your education? It seems that some students would like to start work as soon as they can., so that they can help offer their parents better lives. Other students hope to go on studying after they finish school and to go to university. Although money is important, many teenagers said they want to do jobs they like. According to the survey, the most popular choice of job is computer programming. What are the dreams of teenagers? Teenagers have all kinds of dreams. Some are more realistic than others. For example, many students said they would like to be volunteers if Beijing could hold the World Cup, maybe working as translators or tour guides. And quite a few said they dream of having a trip to every corner of the world one day.
According to the survey, less realistic dreams are also common, but many students reported that they were willing to work hard to achieve dreams. Quite a few dreamed of becoming famous, perhaps famous sports people or singers. Some students said they would like to go on exciting trips. One student said she would love to sail across the Pacific Ocean. And then there are dreams that are impossible. Three students said they would like to be able to fly!
Conclusion: It was clear from the survey that teenagers have similar hopes. It seems that most students hope to have a good education and find a good job. On the other hand, students dream of very different things: good things, and even crazy things. It is very important to dream, so hold on to your dreams; one day they may just be realized.
