Here are four of them to feed your imagination. A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson How did it all begin? And how did we get here? Combining history and science, the book offers a comprehensive yet entertaining answer to these questions. Bill Bryson takes the reader on an impressive journey through the greatest scientific discoveries in history. It explains scientific topics in a vivid way, but it’s quite a long read. Thing Explainer by Randall Munroe How do helicopters work? Or cells? Randall Munroe explains how things work using illustrations and only the most common 1000 words in English. It will shift your approach to explanation. So, next time explain how something works rather than merely call it by its name. However, additionally providing more technical terms might have enhanced the understanding and learning experience. Ask an Astronaut by Tim Peake What does it feel like to fly into space? How do you prepare for it? Astronaut Tim Peake answers all the questions you never knew about going into space. The book gives insights into the cutting-edge science, as well as the day-to-day life on board of the International Space Station. Its question and answer format makes it easy to quickly find answers, but it can become less appealing due to the lack of descriptive language. Deep Time by Riley Black Want to know the story of our planet? Riley Black takes us on a journey, in the order of time, through the geological (地质的) events that have shaped our planet. The fascinating high-quality images are supported by easily digestible explanations of key historical moments. It also expands on key concepts in geology, astronomy and biology. Yet, measuring the size of some objects on the photos is difficult due to the lack of a scale bar (比例尺). 21. Which book is organized in the format of question and answer? A. A Short History of Nearly Everything. B. Thing Explainer. C. Ask an Astronaut. D. Deep Time. 22. What’s a shortcoming of Thing Explainer? A. It is rather too long. B. It is written in plain language. C. It lacks technical terms. D. It fails to include clear images. 23. What do A Short History of Nearly Everything and Deep Time have in common? A. They combine science and history. B. They feature vivid illustrations. C. They introduce astronauts’ daily life. D. They entertain readers of all ages. B Rowan Atkinson is an English actor, comedian and screenwriter. In Britain, Mr Atkinson is mostly famous for many successful TV shows but internationally we know him best as the awkward, clumsy, but always amusing Mr Bean. If you think that Rowan Atkinson is anything like his famous creation, then you are in for a surprise. On the contrary, he is nothing like Mr Bean. Rowan was born on 6 January, 1955. He grew up on a farm with his parents and three older brothers. His father was very strict and did not believe in the value 10 of television. Rowan had a very successful academic career. At the age of 13, he was awarded a scholarship to a boarding school. Later, he studied at Newcastle University, where he attained the highest marks in his year. At Oxford, he obtained his master’s degree in electrical engineering. This may explain why he loves fast cars, of which he has many. When Rowan was young, he had a stutter and to make his speech clearer, he began to speak very carefully. This may be why some of his characters have unusual ways of speaking. As early as primary school, Rowan had already shown a talent for acting, but it was only later at university that he decided to become an actor. A key event occurred one day in 1976 when he was playing around and pulling a face in the mirror. “I discovered my face,” he said later. John Lloyd, who worked as a producer for BBC Television, says that one rarely meets someone with such genius, and that when he worked with Atkinson he became convinced that Rowan would be more famous than Charlie Chaplin. 24. From the first paragraph we know________. A. Mr. Atkinson is completely different from Mr. Bean B. Mr. Atkinson is famous to the British as a comedian C. Mr. Atkinson is very much like Mr. Bean D. Mr. Atkinson is really Mr. Bean 25. The reason why Mr. Atkinson loves fast cars is that ________. A. he was awarded a scholarship B. he has many fast cars C. he is good at electrical engineering D. he attained the highest marks 26. What does the sentence “I discovered my face” mean? A. he found he is handsome. B. he saw his face in the mirror. C. he realized he had genius as an actor. D. he didn’t know who he was. 27. Which of the following may be the best title of the passage? A. Rowan Atkinson B. The Contemporary Chaplin C. A famous Comedian D. A Talented Actor C Some talk of building settlements on the moon or Mars to help make sure humanity survives long into the future. Others have their sights set closer to home: on future cities under the ocean. “Technologically speaking, it is absolutely possible to colonize the bottom of the sea,” says Fabien Cousteau, a well-known ocean explorer who once spent 31 days living in what is now the world’s only functioning undersea habitat, Aquarius. It’s about the size of a school bus and located 62 feet below the ocean surface off the Florida Keys. Just as astronauts test what it would be like to live in space, aquanauts try out undersea living with an eye on the future. Escaping from disasters such as climate change, wars, or pandemics is one reason to live under the sea. Others include studying, exploring, or appreciating the ocean. It’s costly and expensive to constantly keep up an ocean habitat which must pump in or make its own air, electricity, and fresh water. Inhabitants have to deal with high pressure. And infections can develop rapidly due to high humidity. Despite the challenges, several new ocean habitats and cities are under construction. A series of space station-like undersea living quarters for aquanauts called Proteus are scheduled to be completed by 2025 off Curacao, an island north of Venezuela in South America. An undersea colony called Ven Base Alpha will be built near a hydrothermal vent, which would supply it with energy. Meanwhile, an undersea city called Ocean Spiral in Japan would link its surface to the deep sea, using the difference in pressure to generate energy and produce fresh water. This sounds amazing, but it would be extremely expensive and remains just a design. Not everyone agrees that building homes in the ocean is a good idea. This type of development could place even more strain on ecosystems that are already struggling with pollution and climate change. It’s important to make sure that any construction is done carefully, says Susanne Menden-Deuer, an oceanographer at the University of Rhode Island. Wild undersea habitats should be treated as “the precious, irreplaceable resource that they are,” she says. 28. What do we know about Aquarius? A. It is still under construction. B. It is the only ocean habitat in operation. C It functions as an undersea school bus. D. It only allows a person to live there for 31 days. 29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The present and future of living under the sea. B. The purpose and cost of building undersea settlements. C. The reasons and challenges of living under the sea. D. The problems and findings of building undersea settlements. 30. What would be the result of building homes in the ocean according to the text? A. Rapid development of undersea habitats. B. Protection of irreplaceable ocean resource. C. Struggles with pollution and climate change. D. Negative impacts on undersea ecosystems. 31. Where is the text most probably taken from? A. A textbook. B. A travel guide. C. An academic journal. D. A science magazine. D Construction robots are not new. They have been doing difficult jobs on building sites for some time. Now, there is a new robot named Charlotte. It is said that this robot can build a 2,150-square-foot house all by itself in just one day. It works as fast as about 100 human workers. Charlotte was created by two Australian companies. One company developed a special, environmentally friendly building material. This material is made from sand, waste glass, and broken bricks found locally. The other company built the robot. Traditional building needs a lot of steps, like fixing steel bars (钢筋) and setting up wooden frames (框架). But Charlotte is different. It uses a special system to 3D print the building material, layer (层) by layer. It can even move and lift itself up using its “spider legs”. All this is done by one machine in a single, continuous process. The robot is still being developed. It will probably take a few years before it builds its first real house. A smaller early model was shown at a recent exhibition. The companies have big dreams for Charlotte. They hope it will not only build houses on Earth in the future but also help build bases for research on the Moon. They say its design, which copies ideas from nature, and its ability to work alone make it perfect for the Moon. While Charlotte seems best for simple building styles right now, its main goal is to help with two big problems: not enough workers and slow building progress. These problems make it hard to solve the housing shortage in many countries. The houses it builds can keep out floods and resist fire. The building process is much faster and cheaper than traditional methods. If the materials are taken from nearby places, it can also be better for the environment by reducing carbon emissions. Of course, this robot builder won’t be the right solution for every place, climate, or what every person likes, But for the millions of people who need a home, it sounds like a very hopeful way to help solve part of the problem. 32. Which aspect of Charlotte is mentioned in paragraph 1? A. Its amazing work efficiency. B. Its widespread application. C. Its environmental quality. D. Its convenient operation. 33. How is Charlotte’s building process different from traditional methods? A. It needs more time. B. It requires more workers. C. It focuses on wooden structures. D. It uses a single continuous process. 34. What future application do the companies expect of Charlotte? A. Repairing historical buildings. B. Developing new building materials. C. Building research bases on the Moon. D. Creating artistic statues for famous people. 35 What is the author’s attitude to the robot builder? A. Critical. B. Positive. C. Doubtful D. Uncaring. Why Not Build A DIY Ebike? The bell’s ringing brought her out of her daydreaming. She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class. Lily followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups, chatted, and laughed, using the break to socialize. Lily, instead, walked alone along the wall of the hallway, with her head down. She was a shy girl, afraid to speak in front of other kids, and didn’t think others would like her. Lily finally sat in Mr. Johnson’s Language Arts class nervously. “Welcome to Language Arts,” said Mr. Johnson. He told jokes as he talked about English. Lily forgot to daydream and laughed along with the rest of the class. “We’ll have some fun with language,” he said. “Just wait and see.” Fun was far beyond what Lily desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply (长粉刺的) face, she felt hopeless and disappointed. “Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Lily began writing crazily as idea after idea fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story. “OK, pass your papers forward,” said the teacher. “Let’s see what we have.” For the rest of the class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Lily originally thought it would be awkward. However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher’s voice. “He’s actually enjoying this,” she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students’ papers not read, including Lily’s paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their work themselves in front of the class next class. Paragraph 1: A week later, the bell rang and the Language Arts class began again. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: After Lily finished her reading, the clapping from her classmates continued for a long time. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 建平县实验中学高二上学期12月月考英语试卷 (试卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟) 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? 27 Which of the following may be the best title of the passage? A. Rowan Atkinson B. The Contemporary Chaplin C. A famous Comedian D. A Talented Actor 【答案】24. A 25. C 26. C 27. 根据第一段中的“If you think that Rowan Atkinson is anything like his famous creation, then you are in for a surprise. On the contrary, he is nothing like Mr Bean.(如果你认为罗温・艾金森和他塑造的经典角色有任何相似之处,那你可要大吃一惊了。恰恰相反,他和憨豆先生毫无相似之处)”可知,罗温・艾金森和憨豆先生完全不一样。故选A项。 根据第三段中的“At Oxford, he obtained his master’s degree in electrical engineering. This may explain why he loves fast cars, of which he has many.(在牛津大学,他取得了电气工程硕士学位。这或许就能解释为什么他钟爱跑车,而且拥有不少辆)”可知,艾金森热爱跑车的原因是他精通电气工程。故选C项。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段中的“As early as primary school, Rowan had already shown a talent for acting, but it was only later at university that he decided to become an actor. A key event occurred one day in 1976 when he was playing around and pulling a face in the mirror. ‘I discovered my face,’ he said later.(早在小学时,罗温就已经展现出了表演天赋,但直到后来上了大学,他才决定成为一名演员。1976年的一天,一件关键的事发生了 —— 当时他正对着镜子做鬼脸玩闹。他后来回忆道:“我发现了自己的面部天赋。”)”可知,这句话的含义是他意识到自己具备演员的天赋。故选C项。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据第六段“John Lloyd, who worked as a producer for BBC Television, says that one rarely meets someone with such genius, and that when he worked with Atkinson he became convinced that Rowan would be more famous than Charlie Chaplin.(英国广播公司电视台制片人约翰・劳埃德表示,拥有这般天赋的人实属罕见,而且在与艾金森合作后,他坚信罗温会比查理・卓别林更加声名远扬)”可知,文章结尾借业内人士的评价,将罗温・艾金森与喜剧大师卓别林相提并论,突出其喜剧天赋与行业地位,以此升华主题。 C Some talk of building settlements on the moon or Mars to help make sure humanity survives long into the future. C. It functions as an undersea school bus. B 29. C 30. D 31. 根据第二段““Technologically speaking, it is absolutely possible to colonize the bottom of the sea,” says Fabien Cousteau, a well-known ocean explorer who once spent 31 days living in what is now the world’s only functioning undersea habitat, Aquarius. It’s about the size of a school bus and located 62 feet below the ocean surface off the Florida Keys. (著名海洋探险家法比安・库斯托说:“从技术上讲,在海底殖民是绝对可能的,”他曾在现在世界上唯一运行的海底栖息地“水瓶座”中生活了31天。该栖息地大约有一辆校车那么大,位于佛罗里达群岛海面以下62英尺处)”可知,Aquarius是唯一在运行的海洋栖息地。故选B项。 29题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段“Just as astronauts test what it would be like to live in space, aquanauts try out undersea living with an eye on the future. 根据最后一段“Not everyone agrees that building homes in the ocean is a good idea. This type of development could place even more strain on ecosystems that are already struggling with pollution and climate change. 35. What is the author’s attitude to the robot builder? A. Critical. B. Positive. C. Doubtful D. Uncaring. A 33. D 34. C 35. 根据第一段“It is said that this robot can build a 2,150-square-foot house all by itself in just one day. It works as fast as about 100 human workers.(据说这个机器人仅用一天时间就能独自建造一座2150平方英尺的房子。它的工作速度相当于大约100名人类工人。)”可知,第一段重点提及了Charlotte惊人的工作效率。故选A。 根据第三段“Traditional building needs a lot of steps, like fixing steel bars (钢筋) and setting up wooden frames (框架). But Charlotte is different. It uses a special system to 3D print the building material, layer (层) by layer. It can even move and lift itself up using its “spider legs”. All this is done by one machine in a single, continuous process.(传统建筑需要很多步骤,比如固定钢筋和搭建木框架。但Charlotte不同。它使用一种特殊系统将建筑材料逐层3D打印出来。它甚至可以用“蜘蛛腿”移动和提升自己。所有这些都由一台机器在一个单一的、连续的过程中完成。)”可知,Charlotte的建筑流程与传统方法的不同之处在于它采用单一的连续流程。故选D。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“They hope it will not only build houses on Earth in the future but also help build bases for research on the Moon.(他们希望未来它不仅能在地球上建造房屋,还能帮助在月球上建造研究基地。)” 根据第五段对Charlotte优势的阐述,如解决劳动力不足和建筑进度慢的问题、建造的房屋能防洪防火、建筑过程更快更便宜且更环保,以及最后一段“ But for the millions of people who need a home, it sounds like a very hopeful way to help solve part of the problem.(但对于数百万需要住房的人来说,这似乎是帮助解决部分问题的一种非常有希望的方式。)” Why Not Build A DIY Ebike? Buying an electric bicycle is a great way to get going quickly and enjoy the immediate satisfaction of getting around on an ebike. ____36____ Here are some of the best reasons. Save money with a DIY ebike. When you buy an electric bicycle, you aren't just paying for the ebike. ____37____ By converting (改装) a bicycle yourself, you can save a bunch of money. When you decide to convert your own bicycle into an electric bicycle, you just pay for the ebike parts themselves. Gain control when building your own ebike. When you choose your own parts, you have total control over the performance of your ebike. This applies more to choosing parts individually, but even buying a complete electric bicycle conversion kit (成套的组合部件) is a great way to go. There are so many different kits for everyone. ____38____ A DIY ebike means a better bicycle. A dirty secret of the ebike industry is that many ebike producers skimp an the quality of the actual bicycle, so that they can bring the price down enough._____39_____ ____40____ The last and perhaps best reason for converting your own bicycle into an ebike is simply the sense of fulfillment. You get a great feeling every day when you ride your ebike, knowing that you are doing a good thing for the environment and that you are also riding something you built with your own two hands. A. You can start with a simple electric bicycle. B. As a result, they can attract more consumers. C. Be proud of building your own electric bicycle. D. You're actually covering all the cost of the ebike. E. Do your own electric bicycle conversion without any help. F. The kit you choose will largely depend on your own desires. G. However, converting your own bicycle into an ebike is better. G 37. D 38. F 39. B 40. 【36题详解】 上文“Buying an electric bicycle is a great way to get going quickly and enjoy the immediate satisfaction of getting around on an ebike.”(买一辆电动自行车是一个快速出行的好方法,并能享受骑着电动自行车四处走动时的即时满足感。)可知,买电动车是一个迅速出行的好方法;后文“here are some of the best reasons to go with a DIY ebike. ”(下面是一些DIY电动自行车的最佳理由。)可知,空处承上启下,语意上表示转折,引出自己动手改装电动自行车的话题,G项“However, converting your own bicycle into an ebike is better.”(然而,把你自己的自行车改装成电动自行车更好),符合语境。故选G项。 【37题详解】 上文“When you buy an electric bicycle, you aren’t just paying for the ebike”(当你买一辆电动自行车时,你不仅仅是在为电动车买单)可知,当你买电动自行车的时候,你不仅仅是在买电动自行车,空处应是接着说还支付了哪些费用;D项You're actually covering all the cost of the ebike. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: A week later, the bell rang and the Language Arts class began again. Lily was nervous with her head down. After other students finished reading the papers one by one, finally, it was Lily’s turn. Frozen with fear, Lily stood in front of the class, with her hands holding her paper, shaking. Seeing it, Mr. Johnson told a funny joke, which made all laugh. Feeling more relaxed, Lily began reading. She was so focused that she felt she was alone. She didn’t notice that her story soon attracted all her classmates who sat up straight, without any chatting. They were lost in her fantastic story. After Lily finished her reading, the clapping from her classmates continued for a long time. Lily was shocked. When she raised her head, she found everyone staring at her excitedly. Lily finally smiled. She found everyone in the class responded to her story positively. After that class, Lily slowly lifted her head while walking. Later, she kept writing. And she began speaking in front of people and enjoyed it. A braver and more confident girl appeared. And she was grateful to Mr. Johnson who believed in every student. 词汇激活 行为类 结束:finish/complete 抬起:raise/lift 注意到:notice /take notice of 情绪类 感谢的:grateful /thankful 轻松的:relaxed /relieved 【点睛】[高分句型1] Frozen with fear, Lily stood in front of the class, with her hands holding her paper, shaking.
