Early morning standing on the green ranch
I caught sight of eagles in the sun glow
Flying across the blue sky like an auspicious cloud
And bringing auspiciousness to the Tibetan sons and daughters
It’s really a magical heaven road
By which the terrestrial warmth is sent to the frontier
From now on the mountains seem not so high and the roads not so long
Children of all ethnic groups gather together happily
At dusk standing on the high hill
I sighted the railway built stretching to my hometown
Like dragons climbing over mountains and mountains
It brings peace and happiness to the snowy plateau
It’s really a magical heaven road
Taking us to the paradise on earth
Highland barley wine and buttered tea will be more aromatic and sweeter
Songs of happiness will spread all over the land

Para. 1
Sitting back in my seat, I can’t quite believe that I’m about to travel along the railway that many foreign experts claimed was “impossible”. The train has been racing along steadily since it left Xining. All this time, the song “Sky Railway” has been playing inside my head. The words “railways like massive dragons are winding among the mountains” seem particularly vivid as I travel across the “roof of the world”.
1. Find details that show the author’s feelings.
2. What’s the function of Para. 1 in picturing the author’s journey?
excited, curious
proud, sense of achievement
It sets both the background of the journey and the emotional atmosphere of the rest of the passage.
Para. 2
I was one of the people who came from all parts of China to work on this railway. Taking years to complete, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is a record of all of our efforts to overcome the most difficult engineering challenges. How to protect the delicate ecosystem was among the top concerns.
What function does Para. 2 play in developing the whole passage?
It makes clear the thesis statement of this passage.
It serves naturally as a transition to the following paras.
Para. 3
The first landmark to catch my eye is the splendid Qingshuihe Bridge, the world’s longest bridge built over permafrost. Look! A group of Tibetan antelopes is moving under the bridge, with some stopping to eat grass at their leisure. Thirty-three passages have been built under the railway to allow the animals to move safely and freely in their natural habitat. Wild animals such as these Tibetan antelopes have now been using these passages for years. They seem totally unaware that we are speeding past at over 100 kilometres an hour.
1. What’s the figure of speech used in “catch my eye”? What’s the function?
Personification
Compared with “I noticed the bridge”, “the bridge catches my eye” seems to let the bridge interact with people. The object becomes lifelike and vivid, increasing language expressiveness (表现力).
Para.
2. a. Underline descriptions of wild animals as the train passes Qingshuihe Bridge.
b. What’s the point in stressing the state of wild animals under the bridge?
The wild animals live as usual, safe, free, not being disturbed. This proves the effectiveness of the 33 passages built to protect the wild animals.
16
To prevent damage to wetlands and grasslands, 675 bridges with a total length of about 160 kilometres were built between Golmud and Lhasa. We even moved 140,000 square metres of wetland to a new area in order to protect its distinct ecosystem.
Para. 4
What is the author’s intention in listing these numbers?
These numbers provide direct and concrete (具体的) evidence of the massive protective efforts made, which shows our nation’s environmental determination while constructing the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.
Para. 5
The journey has been flying by, and before I know it, we have reached Tanggula Station. Located at over 5,000 metres above sea level, this is the highest railway station in the world. In locations such as this, the thin air, changeable weather and high levels of UV radiation presented perhaps the greatest challenge for railway workers. To make sure we stayed healthy, several oxygen-making stations were constructed. We were also able to enjoy regular breaks in lower areas.
1.What does “it” represent?
2. What can be inferred from this sentence?
“we have reached Tanggula Station”
the train is running at a high speed
the author has a comfortable journey instead of feeling bored, ignorant of (未意识到的) the passing time
Para. 6
As we pass Cuona Lake, I feel a sense of pride and achievement. Using thousands and thousands of sandbags, we built a twenty-kilometre wall along the lake to protect it from construction waste. Cuona Lake is so close to the railway that I want to reach out and touch its pale blue mirror-like surface. Water birds playing in the lake, and cattle and sheep wandering the grasslands bring the scenery to life.
1. What’s the figure of speech used in “pale blue mirror-like surface”?
What’s the function?
By comparing the lake surface with mirror, the author makes it easy for readers to image how clear and peaceful the lake surface is.

Water birds playing in the lake, and cattle and sheep wandering the grasslands bring the scenery to life.
Para. 6
2. How did the author describe the view of Cuona Lake?
Sights Feelings
1. pale blue mirror-like surface
2. water birds playing in the lake
3. cattle and sheep wandering the grasslands
wants to touch (to feel) it
the feeling of life
Para. 6

你对 “发展与保护环境” 的理解。
1.The Qinghai‑Tibet Railway runs from Xining to Lhasa and was put into operation in 2006. It is known as the “Sky Railway”.
During construction, builders took great care to protect the fragile ecosystem. They built passages for wild Tibetan antelopes to move freely. Plenty of bridges were built to protect wetlands and grasslands. Besides, a long sandbag wall was built to keep Cuona Lake away from construction waste. It is truly an extraordinary engineering wonder.
2.Diary October 12th Monday Sunny
Today I took a trip on the world‑famous Qinghai‑Tibet Railway, the amazing “Sky Railway”. Sitting on the train, I enjoyed breathtaking high‑land views. Snow‑capped mountains stood in the distance. When we passed Qingshuihe Bridge, I caught sight of several Tibetan antelopes walking freely under the bridge. Later, Cuona Lake came into sight. Its pale blue surface was just like a mirror, with water birds playing happily on the water.
I was deeply impressed by what I saw. Years ago, many foreign experts thought building this railway was impossible. While creating this great transport project, workers made every effort to protect the delicate ecosystem. They built animal passages, moved wetlands and set up sandbag walls to guard Cuona Lake.
This journey teaches me a valuable lesson. Economic development should never come at the cost of nature. We can achieve progress while respecting our environment. Only in this way can humans and nature live in perfect harmony.
