Getting around Venice by travelling along its water ways is a delight for all visitors. Apart from offering unforgettable views of the architecture, the city's transportations are convenient, efficient, and also relatively inexpensive.
PASSES
Instead of paying EUR 7 per ride, a better option is to purchase one of ACTV's passes, which offer unlimited travel for 1 day (EUR 20), 2 days (EUR 30), 3 days (EUR 40) or 1 week (EUR 60). For children and young people between the ages of 6 and 29, ACTV offers a special "Rolling Venice" 3-day pass (EUR 29).
BY GONDOLA
Considered by many as the most symbolic feature of Venice, today gondolas circulate most often on canals in the centre of the city, carrying tourists on rides at fixed rates, which tend to be rather high. A 40-minute ride costs around EUR 100, but may be shared by as many as six passengers.
BY RENTAL BOAT
It is possible to rent a boat to travel around Venice's canals. A boating permit is not required, but you will need to pass a basic turning and docking test before being allowed to rent a boat. Rates start at EUR 30 per hour.
BY WATER TAXI
Getting around by water taxi in Venice is most costly, but can be a convenient option when you are in a hurry or need to carry a lot of luggage. The initial charge is EUR 15, then EUR 2 per minute. If you have more than one bag per passenger, there is a charge of EUR 3 for each additional piece.
Note: There are only four fueling stations for boats in Venice. Make sure you note their locations before heading out.
21. What is said about the ACTV's pass?
A. It provides the tourists with five choices. B. It is only suitable for kids and the young.
C. It should be ordered ahead of time online. D. It is a certificate given to the foreign tourists.
22. Why does the author recommend gondola?
A. Because it is the most economical means. B. Because tourists can enjoy the city for longer.
C. Because tourists will be clear about the cost. D. Because it represents the city of Venice.
23. Which of the following may cost you most?
A. PASSES. B. BY GONDOLA.
C. BY WATER TAXI. D. BY RENTAL BOAT.

Rowan Atkinson is an English actor, comedian and screenwriter. In Britain, Mr Atkinson is mostly famous for many successful TV shows but internationally we know him best as the awkward, clumsy, but always amusing Mr Bean. If you think that Rowan Atkinson is anything like his famous creation, then you are in for a surprise. On the contrary, he is nothing like Mr Bean.
Rowan was born on 6 January, 1955. He grew up on a farm with his parents and three older brothers. His father was very strict and did not believe in the value 10 of television.
Rowan had a very successful academic career. At the age of 13, he was awarded a scholarship to a boarding school. Later, he studied at Newcastle University, where he attained the highest marks in his year. At Oxford, he obtained his master’s degree in electrical engineering. This may explain why he loves fast cars, of which he has many.
When Rowan was young, he had a stutter and to make his speech clearer, he began to speak very carefully. This may be why some of his characters have unusual ways of speaking.
As early as primary school, Rowan had already shown a talent for acting, but it was only later at university that he decided to become an actor. A key event occurred one day in 1976 when he was playing around and pulling a face in the mirror. “I discovered my face,” he said later.
John Lloyd, who worked as a producer for BBC Television, says that one rarely meets someone with such genius, and that when he worked with Atkinson he became convinced that Rowan would be more famous than Charlie Chaplin.
24. From the first paragraph we know________.
A. Mr. Atkinson is completely different from Mr. Bean
B. Mr. Atkinson is famous to the British as a comedian
C. Mr. Atkinson is very much like Mr. Bean
D. Mr. Atkinson is really Mr. Bean
25. The reason why Mr. Atkinson loves fast cars is that ________.
A. he was awarded a scholarship B. he has many fast cars
C. he is good at electrical engineering D. he attained the highest marks
26. What does the sentence “I discovered my face” mean?
A. he found he is handsome. B. he saw his face in the mirror.
C. he realized he had genius as an actor. D. he didn’t know who he was.
27. Which of the following may be the best title of the passage?
A. Rowan Atkinson B. The Contemporary Chaplin
C. A famous Comedian D. A Talented Actor
C
Older people worry about how to make young ones, who love their devices, interested in old books. Like the Monkey King from Journey to the West, he was a favorite hero before the Internet came along.
Havoc in Heaven《大闹天宫》 a new Peking Opera film, attracted the wider public to the charm of the traditional Chinese performance art, featuring one of the best-known chapters from Journey to the West. This film, expected to create a new channel to promote Peking Opera, includes nearly all the key ingredients of Peking Opera. It covers all the basic techniques, more than 10 classic tunes, and make-up for dozens of facial representations of different figures’ characteristics.
It’s actually a big challenge to combine Peking Opera and film, each of which has its own rhythm, according to Cheng Lu, director of the film, who is adopting a fresh approach to present the traditional art form. One challenge that Cheng and his production team faced is how to balance the new approach with maintaining the fundamentals of the art. The basic principles and performance skills in Peking Opera cannot be changed.
Some background images on stage, such as a painted waterfall, remain, and a live band was on the set to provide sound for the film, rather than employing the prerecorded music. “If we change traditions to cater to people’s taste and preference for a regular film, it will no longer be a Peking Opera piece of art,” Cheng said.
On the other hand, some creativity was needed because Cheng and his team did not just want to document a stage performance. Computer technology is also applied to achieve some visual effects and to present impossible scenes.
Peking Opera films played a powerful role in the 1960s and 70s, but they gave way to more diverse entertainment. In recent years, there has been a recovery in the popularity of Peking Opera films. However, the overuse of special effects in many film adaptations of Peking Opera plays has weakened the original charm of the stage performances. The imagination (enabled by the stage) can never be sacrificed for a film’s expression.
28. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To blame young people addicted to electronic devices.
B. To express older people’s concern about the young generation.
C. To arouse readers’ interest in traditional Chinese performance art.
D. To introduce a new Peking Opera film that the article is to deal with.
29 What did Director Cheng do while producing the film?
A. He made changes to basic performance skills.
B. He made use of symbols and motions equally.
C. He insisted on a band playing music on the scene.
D. He brought onto the stage exact details of real life.
30. What innovation did Cheng’s team make?
A. They opposed a rigid recording of the performance.
B. They enriched visual effects with modern technology.
C. They allowed actors to repeat actions before the camera.
D. They adopted real explosion scenes during the shooting.
31. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A. Imagination is a unique charm of Peking Opera films.
B. Technology makes up for the loss of stage imagination.
C. There is some possibility for a film to replace Peking Opera.
D. The traditional appeal of Peking Opera should not be given up for movies.
D
A form of gene therapy that is already being trialled in patients with Parkinson’s disease might provide a treatment for severe alcohol addiction.
Alcohol misuse is the biggest risk factor for death, disability and ill health among people aged 15 to 49 in the UK, responsible for 9,641 deaths during 2021. Like other addictive substances, alcohol triggers the release of a feelgood chemical in the brain called dopamine. However, long-term drinking decreases dopamine release, and people who are addicted to alcohol don’t tend to feel pleasure in drinking it any more. “It seems that they’re drinking more because they feel a need to maintain a drunk state,” said Prof Kathleen Grant at Oregon Health and Science University.
The idea of the gene therapy was to try to reset this dopamine reward pathway by enhancing the function of brain cells that synthesize dopamine. Like humans, some macaque monkeys are more likely to drink heavily than others: if you begin to offer them the choice of 5% alcohol alongside their regular food and water, some monkeys will eventually almost always choose the alcohol. Grant and her colleagues wondered whether resetting their dopamine reward pathways might contain their desire to drink alcohol. To do this, they used a harmless virus to deliver the gene for a protein called glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) to an area of the brain that is involved in addiction and reward. “We targeted the cell bodies that produce dopamine with this gene to increase dopamine synthesis, thus supplementing or restoring what long-term drinking has taken away,” Grant said.
The research, which was published in Nature Medicine, found that the macaques permanently started overexpressing dopamine and decreased their alcohol consumption by up to 90%. “We are entering an era of gene therapy for neurological disorders and perhaps mental disorders, and I think this study is very promising in that direction.” Grant said.
She added that animal studies are needed before the technique could be tested on humans. Also, because the gene therapy procedure involves brain surgery, it would probably only ever be used in the most severe cases of alcohol addiction.
32. Why do severe alcohol addicts drink more?
A. Because they long for desired pleasure.
B. Because they have a form of gene defect.
C. Because they want to escape from reality.
D. Because they suffer from deadly disability.
33. The underlined word “synthesize” in paragraph 3 can best be replaced by ________.
A. Stimulate. B. Produce. C. Charge. D. Delay.
34. What did Grant’s study focus on?
A. The life habit of macaque monkeys.
B The way to control alcohol addiction.
C. The working mechanism of dopamine.
D. The function of the protein called GDNF.
35. What did Grant suggest about the gene therapy?
A. Employ it to treat severe alcohol addiction only.
B. Replace it with more efficient methods if necessary.
C. Confirm its effectiveness with more tests on humans.
D. Put it into widespread use on other common species.

It was the first week of Lily’s middle school. The bell’s ringing brought her out of her daydreaming. She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class.
Lily followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups chatted, and laughed, using the break to socialize. Lily, instead, walked alone along the wall of the hallway, with her head down. She was a shy girl, afraid to speak in front of other kids, and didn’t think others would like her.
Lily finally sat in Mr. Johnson’s Language Arts class nervously. “Welcome to Language Arts,” said Mr. Johnson. He told jokes as he talked about English. Lily forgot to daydream and laughed along with the rest of the class. “We’ll have some fun with language,” he said. “Just wait and see.”
Fun was far beyond what Lily desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply (长粉刺的) face, she felt hopeless and disappointed.
“Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Lily began writing crazily as idea after idea fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story.
“OK, pass your papers forward,” said the teacher. “Let’s see what we have.” For the rest of the class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Lily originally thought it would be awkward. However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher’s voice. “He’s actually enjoying this,” she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students’ papers not read, including Lily’s paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their work themselves in front of the class next class.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

M: Like I said, I was just excited about my project. Biology is my favorite subject after all. But you are right. I need to set up a calendar and give myself a schedule to follow.

M: As a young child, I always enjoyed physical challenges more than mental ones. I liked to run and build swings. At that stage, I hadn’t yet learned to climb or swim, but I would have loved to try those two. One day, we had a physical education class at school. We did the long jump and handstands, but it was when I tried to do a forward roll, the disaster struck. Somehow, I twisted my neck in an extremely painful way. I screamed loudly, and the teachers were very concerned. An ambulance was called, and I was taken to a hospital. The doctors fitted me with a collar, and I was told to avoid exercise and stay away from school for eight weeks. At first, I was very bored. Having to keep still all day was no fun. So I started to read. I looked at books on the shelf at home. I wasn’t interested in love stories. I avoided those, but crime and adventure did appeal to me. During those eight weeks, I developed a lifelong love of reading. When my collar was removed, the doctors told me not to exercise for another four weeks. Instead of being disappointed, I was happy to devote more time to my new love — reading.

A 22. D 23. C

A 25. C 26. C 27. B
根据第一段中的“If you think that Rowan Atkinson is anything like his famous creation, then you are in for a surprise. On the contrary, he is nothing like Mr Bean.(如果你认为罗温・艾金森和他塑造的经典角色有任何相似之处,那你可要大吃一惊了。恰恰相反,他和憨豆先生毫无相似之处)”可知,罗温・艾金森和憨豆先生完全不一样。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“At Oxford, he obtained his master’s degree in electrical engineering. This may explain why he loves fast cars, of which he has many.(在牛津大学,他取得了电气工程硕士学位。这或许就能解释为什么他钟爱跑车,而且拥有不少辆)”可知,艾金森热爱跑车的原因是他精通电气工程。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“As early as primary school, Rowan had already shown a talent for acting, but it was only later at university that he decided to become an actor. A key event occurred one day in 1976 when he was playing around and pulling a face in the mirror. ‘I discovered my face,’ he said later.(早在小学时,罗温就已经展现出了表演天赋,但直到后来上了大学,他才决定成为一名演员。1976年的一天,一件关键的事发生了 —— 当时他正对着镜子做鬼脸玩闹。他后来回忆道:“我发现了自己的面部天赋。”)”可知,这句话的含义是他意识到自己具备演员的天赋。故选C项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据第六段“John Lloyd, who worked as a producer for BBC Television, says that one rarely meets someone with such genius, and that when he worked with Atkinson he became convinced that Rowan would be more famous than Charlie Chaplin.(英国广播公司电视台制片人约翰・劳埃德表示,拥有这般天赋的人实属罕见,而且在与艾金森合作后,他坚信罗温会比查理・卓别林更加声名远扬)”可知,文章结尾借业内人士的评价,将罗温・艾金森与喜剧大师卓别林相提并论,突出其喜剧天赋与行业地位,以此升华主题。
C
Older people worry about how to make young ones, who love their devices, interested in old books. Like the Monkey King from Journey to the West, he was a favorite hero before the Internet came along.
Havoc in Heaven《大闹天宫》, a new Peking Opera film, attracted the wider public to the charm of the traditional Chinese performance art, featuring one of the best-known chapters from Journey to the West.
29. What did Director Cheng do while producing the film?
D 29. C 30. B 31.

D Because they suffer from deadly disability.
33. The underlined word “synthesize” in paragraph 3 can best be replaced by ________.
A. Stimulate. B. Produce. C. Charge. D. Delay.
34. What did Grant’s study focus on?
A. The life habit of macaque monkeys.
B. The way to control alcohol addiction.
A 33. B 34. B 35. A

根据第二段中“Like other addictive substances, alcohol triggers the release of a feelgood chemical in the brain called dopamine. However, long-term drinking decreases dopamine release, and people who are addicted to alcohol don’t tend to feel pleasure in drinking it any more. “It seems that they’re drinking more because they feel a need to maintain a drunk state,” said Prof Kathleen Grant at Oregon Health and Science University.”(像其他成瘾物质一样,酒精会引发大脑释放一种叫做多巴胺的感觉良好的化学物质。 故选A项。
根据划线单词句中“The idea of the gene therapy was to try to reset this dopamine reward pathway by enhancing the function of brain cells…”(基因疗法的想法是试图通过增强……
根据第三段中“Grant and her colleagues wondered whether resetting their dopamine reward pathways might contain their desire to drink alcohol. To do this, they used a harmless virus to deliver the gene for a protein called glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) to an area of the brain that is involved in addiction and reward.”(格兰特和她的同事们想知道,重置多巴胺奖励通路是否会抑制他们喝酒的欲望。
根据最后一段中“Also, because the gene therapy procedure involves brain surgery, it would probably only ever be used in the most severe cases of alcohol addiction.”(此外,由于基因治疗过程涉及脑部手术,它可能只会用于最严重的酒精成瘾病例。) 故选A项。

____40____ The last and perhaps best reason for converting your own bicycle into an ebike is simply the sense of fulfillment. You get a great feeling every day when you ride your ebike, knowing that you are doing a good thing for the environment and that you are also riding something you built with your own two hands.
A. You can start with a simple electric bicycle.
B. As a result, they can attract more consumers.
C. Be proud of building your own electric bicycle.
D. You're actually covering all the cost of the ebike.
E. Do your own electric bicycle conversion without any help.
F. The kit you choose will largely depend on your own desires.
G. However, converting your own bicycle into an ebike is better.

上文“Buying an electric bicycle is a great way to get going quickly and enjoy the immediate satisfaction of getting around on an ebike.”(买一辆电动自行车是一个快速出行的好方法,并能享受骑着电动自行车四处走动时的即时满足感。)可知,买电动车是一个迅速出行的好方法;后文“here are some of the best reasons to go with a DIY ebike. ”(下面是一些DIY电动自行车的最佳理由。)可知,空处承上启下,语意上表示转折,引出自己动手改装电动自行车的话题,G项“However, converting your own bicycle into an ebike is better.”(然而,把你自己的自行车改装成电动自行车更好),符合语境。故选G项。
【37题详解】
上文“When you buy an electric bicycle, you aren’t just paying for the ebike”(当你买一辆电动自行车时,你不仅仅是在为电动车买单)可知,当你买电动自行车的时候,你不仅仅是在买电动自行车,空处应是接着说还支付了哪些费用;D项You're actually covering all the cost of the ebike.
上文“There are so many different kits out there for everyone.”(对于每个人,都有很多不同的套件。)

It was the first week of Lily’s middle school. The bell’s ringing brought her out of her daydreaming. She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class.
Lily followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups, chatted, and laughed, using the break to socialize.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
A week later, the bell rang and the Language Arts class began again.

One possible version:
A week later, the bell rang and the Language Arts class began again. Lily was nervous with her head down. After other students finished reading the papers one by one, finally, it was Lily’s turn. Frozen with fear, Lily stood in front of the class, with her hands holding her paper, shaking. Seeing it, Mr. Johnson told a funny joke, which made all laugh. Feeling more relaxed, Lily began reading. She was so focused that she felt she was alone. She didn’t notice that her story soon attracted all her classmates who sat up straight, without any chatting. They were lost in her fantastic story.
After Lily finished her reading, the clapping from her classmates continued for a long time. Lily was shocked. When she raised her head, she found everyone staring at her excitedly. Lily finally smiled. She found everyone in the class responded to her story positively. After that class, Lily slowly lifted her head while walking. Later, she kept writing. And she began speaking in front of people and enjoyed it. A braver and more confident girl appeared. And she was grateful to Mr. Johnson who believed in every student.
