I am a shy girl. I find it quite difficult to start small talk when I meet someone for the first time. I always wonder how the other kids my age can be so natural when they are introduced to people they’ve never met before.
On the morning of my first day in high school, I had butterflies in my stomach. I’d heard lots of the first day in high school stories. Many high schoolers had bad memories that they just couldn’t let go of for quite a while. On the way to school I was thinking about what to do when I walked into the classroom. “Shall I wave to those students who’re in the classroom? Or shall I just give them a smile and nod at them? What if they didn’t wave back or didn’t smile back?” I couldn’t stop imagining the worst situation of my first day in high school.
I kept my head down when I got close to my classroom. “Hello, little miss, I’m Mrs Sccar, would you like to start your high school life with a game?” What a relief it was to hear your new teacher talking to you in such a pleasant way! “Sure, I’d love to,” I answered in a low but happy voice.
Mrs Sccar gave me a piece of paper and it was a new school Bingo game. On the paper there were 40 squares, with 20 having questions and 20 empty. The questions were like “Have you ever visited England? Do you have three older sisters?” Holding these pieces of paper, we went to the other classmates and asked them the questions. If any of them answered “yes” to a question, I wrote down his or her name in the empty square following the question. When I’d filled in all the empty squares, I knew everyone in my classroom. I quite enjoyed my first day in high school, especially the Bingo game.
4. What does the underlined part “I had butterflies in my stomach” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. I was proud. B. I felt nervous.
C. I seemed unfriendly. D. I looked dangerous.
5. What did the author do on the way to school?
A. She waved to other people.
B. She nodded to other people.
C. She imagined some bad situations.
D. She thought about seeing smiling faces.
6. How did the author feel when Mrs Sccar talked to her?
A. Warm. B. Lost. C. Frightened. D. Successful.
7. What did the author do during the Bingo game?
A. She asked Mrs Sccar questions.
B. She talked about her own sisters.
C. She collected her classmates’ names.
D. She wrote down “yes” in the squares.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. C

Teenagers who spend more time on afterschool activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally (心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventhgrade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV, Netflix or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in afterschool activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study.Students with no afterschool activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in afterschool activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in afterschool activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests long screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that afterschool activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said.“While past studies have proved the importance of afterschool activities for social and academic development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
8. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study?
A. Reporting their mental states.
B. Talking about their lifestyles.
C. Introducing their afterschool activities.
D. Answering questions about screen time use.
9. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in afterschool activities.
C. Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
10. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in Paragraph 4?
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. No afterschool activities mean no screen time.
C Long screen time is common among teenagers.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than afterschool activities do.
11. Why are afterschool activities so important according to the new study?
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B

故选A项。
【9题详解】

【10题详解】

The biggest challenge faced by travelers, especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady (稳定的) supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called Scrubba Wash Pack, that worry may be a thing of the past.
The easy to take washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while he was planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quitted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag’s design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light.
Not surprisingly, the bag which was worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a disadvantage of his invention — dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.
In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two or three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged (按摩揉洗) for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What’s even more amazing is that with a capacity (容量) to hold 13 liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.
The best part is that the 99 - dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it’s not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!
12. What led Ash Newland to create the Scrubba Wash Pack?
A. His job requirements. B. His career as a lawyer.
C. His interest in invention. D. His personal experience.
13. Why wasn’t Ash Newland satisfied with his former invention?
A. Clothes couldn’t be washed well. B. An extra bag was required for dirty clothes.
C. The bag was not beautiful and fashionable. D. The cost of invention was high.
14. It can be inferred that the improved Scrubba Wash Pack ________.
A. turns out to be not environmentally friendly
B. will replace the traditional washing machine
C. will be widely used by more travelers in the future
D. can encourage all people to travel a long distance
15. Which of the following is the best title?
A. The Biggest Challenge of a Traveler
B. A New Washing Bag for Hikers
C. How Clothes Are Washed During a Hike
D. The Washing Machine: A Thing of The Past
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. B

C. Long screen time is common among teenagers.
D
D. The Washing Machine: A Thing of The Past
