“Have you checked the oil in the car, Ted?” my father used to say to me. Sometimes our phone calls would begin and end with an only inquiry (询问) about the oil, without asking anything else. Fathers have lots of love to give, but it’s often provided through useful advice. In my experience, it’s mostly about the car.
Why can’t fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you”? Why can’t the sentences “I care about you” and “You made my life better from the moment you were born” be heard? Because fathers tend to express their true feelings indirectly. You just have to understand the language — Fatherlish (父亲式语言).
When I was 17 years old, I went on my first road trip in that old car. My father stood on the corner on a cold early morning to say goodbye. “Roads are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try driving faster than a horse. And remember to take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for a rest, you really should check the oil. ” At the time I thought his speech was pretty funny and old.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that if I had owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I would have understood that the speech that I always laughed at was simply Dad’s way to express love and care.
4. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. The author wanted to buy a new car badly.
B. The author forgot to check the oil regularly.
C. The author’s father expressed his love differently.
D. The author’s father preferred to make phone calls.
5. Why does the author mention his first road trip?
A. To show the danger of the trip. B. To present his father’s hidden love.
C To explain the rules of driving. D. To tell a very exciting experience.
6. How does the author feel about his father’s speech at last?
A. Funny. B. Traditional. C. Caring. D. Old.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Driving An Old Car B. Annoying Phone Calls
C. Father’s Helpful Advice D. The Fatherlish Language

Tall palm (棕榈) trees are a signature of Hollywood Boulevard. Their relatives, however, can come in very different shapes and sizes. And it seems that one new-to-science palm probably doesn't attract public attention. This palm is not only short, but also grows its flowers and fruit totally underground.
“We knew immediately that it's a really unusual palm,” says Benedik t Kuhnhäuser, who works at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in England.
Botanist Paul Chai first noticed the palm in the late 1990s. He found it growing in Borneo, a Southeast Asian island. Over breakfast one day in 2018, Chai told Kuhnhäuser and other botanists about the unusual palm. Later, the team visited Borneo. And to their surprise, they found this underground palm plentiful there.
Growing anything, even flowers and fruits underground, is uncommon for a plant. Although botanists just learned of Borneo's unusual palm, local people knew the palm well. The locals had their own names for the palm. Some even dug it up to eat its fruit. For Kuhnhäuser, this shows the importance of not only working with local people, but also including their knowledge in research papers.
The palm biology is also interesting. Plants often work hard to invite pollinators (传粉者) to their flowers to help their reproduction. Many plants depend on the wind to do it so that the species can survive. So how does a plant pull this off when its flowers and seeds are both underground? This palm may depend partially on self- pollination. Even underground, beetles may be able to move pollen (花粉) between plants. The researchers also saw wild pigs digging up the palm's fruits. They might help spread the palm seeds.
Sidonie Bellot, who works with Kuhnhäuser at Kew, now tries to find out how the newly described palm may have developed its underground lifestyle.
8. Who first noticed the short palm in science?
A. Borneo. B. Kuhnhäuser. C. Paul Chai. D. Sidonie Bellot.
9. What does Kuhnhäuser probably intend to do about his study?
A. Turn to the locals for help. B. Set up a primary school.
C. Find jobs for the villagers. D. Plant more palms at Kew.
10. What might play a leading role in helping the palm to reproduce?
A. Human beings. B. Wild animals.
C. Strong winds. D. Young leaves.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new flower. B. A lonely island.
C. A tasty fruit. D. A unique plant.

“The weather station in Furnace Creek, Death Valley, California, reported a temperature of 54. 4℃ on 16 August,” said Clare Nullis, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) spokesperson. “If verified (证实), it would be the highest temperature on Earth since 1931, and the third- hottest temperature ever recorded on the planet. ”
Speaking in Geneva, Ms. Nullis told reporters that WMO had tasked a group of international experts to check the reading by examining the observation (观测), the equipment used, and how it compared to data collected at nearby stations.
According to WMO's data, the hottest temperature ever recorded was in Furnace Creek, Death Valley, California, reaching 56. 7℃ on 10 July 1913. The next highest temperature was set in July 1931 in Kebili, Tunisia, reaching 55℃. Other high temperature records include54℃ in Mitribah, Kuwait on 21 July 2016.
The findings show that the equipment at Furnace Creek meteorological station was in proper working condition at the time of Sunday's observation, Ms. Nullis noted. “Although the full verification process will likely take many months, ” Ms. Nullis said, “ all the markers so far show that this is a fair and acceptable observation. ”
The very hot conditions have come along with a heatwave on the US west coast. The US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued (发布) numerous heat warnings explaining that the high temperatures will continue this week. The NWS in Las Vegas, which covers the Death Valley area, said online, “We are faced with a long- lasting heat event. Another run at 54. 4℃- plus temperatures in Death Valley remains possible.”
The development follows repeated warnings from WMO about high temperatures which are having a bad influence, causing wildfires in places such as forests and grasslands.
12. What is the highest temperature recorded on the earth since 1913?
A. 57. 0℃. B. 56. 7℃. C. 54. 4℃. D. 54. 0℃.
13. What does Ms. Nullis think of the observation in Furnace Creek?
A. It's changeable. B. It's incorrect.
C. It's believable. D. It's unfair.
14. What can we infer about the Death Valley area from the last two paragraphs?
A. It will probably see hotter weather. B. It was badly hit by deadly wildfires.
C. It will face temperature drops this week. D. It was well- known for its good grasslands.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The New Development Follows a Summer Event
B The Hot Weather Has a Bad Influence on Tunisia
C. WMO Carried out a Survey of the Mistaken Report
D. Furnace Creek Temperature is Close to a Record High

He was deep in thought when Guillermo, David’s friend and fan at school, sat next to him. Guillermo often watched his hero David play soccer. He admired David because David was popular, good at soccer, and had nice shoes. Guillermo felt shy about his own old shoes. They were dirty and had holes. Each time he sat next to David, he tried to hide his shoes under the seat and David didn’t notice it.
Another day on the bus, David happily told Guillermo that he had saved enough money for new shoes and planned to buy them as soon as he got off the bus. At this moment, the bus suddenly hit something on the road. One of Guillermo’s shoes slipped out (滑出) from under the seat. Everyone could see how old and broken it was.

Getting organized
Like most people, I can get disorganized: too many papers on my messy desk and a computer filled with different articles. Here are some ways I use to fight against disorganization.
Don’t add to disorganization.___16___ . Don’t just throw it on your desk or bed.
Every day, put something away. You may have several things hiding in and around your table, so why not at least put them in one box or even where they should have stayed?
___17___. I still regret selling my first bicycle at a yard sale, but at some point, your possessions(私人物品) can start to possess you. If you give yourself room to be a little sad about the letting go, you will have a feeling of freedom(自由) instead.
Organize your organization. ___18___ , followed by the least important. Get the hard tasks out of the way, and the boring ones will become much easier.
Use any moments. If for some unknown reason you pick up a piece of paper, file (归档) or throw it away. ___19___ , take a picture with your phone.
No need to pressure yourself. As someone once said, “You didn’t get disorganized overnight, and you won’t get organized that way either.” you do one thing every day, and do not make things worse, it will get better. ___20___, your situation will change.
A. If you need to keep something
B. Getting organized is not a race
C. Store things you are unsure about
D. Put the most important things first

第三节(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)
阅读下列各句,在空白处填入1个适当单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
46. ________(compare) with basketball, soccer is Sarah’s favorite. (所给词的适当形式填空)
【答案】Compared
47. My Chinese teacher recommends Mary ________ (watch) the film to experience the relationship between mother and daughter. (所给词的适当形式填空)
【答案】watching

【答案】jogging
【解析】
【详解】考查动名词。句意:我发现我的儿子对慢跑比对足球更感兴趣。根据“be attracted to doing sth. (对做某事感兴趣,被……吸引)”的固定搭配可知,此空应是动名词jogging,作介词to的宾语。故填jogging。
49. But spending too much time online is unhealthy and makes _____ very difficult to focus on other things in life. (用适当的单词填空)
【答案】it
50. It is for this reason______________ Spanish is the main official language of Peru. (用适当的词填空)

第二节(满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
David always took a window seat on the school bus. The wind felt cool on his face as he thought about that day’s soccer game. His teammates said he played well. One even said that he would become a famous player one day. That was David’s dream — to play for his country and make his mother proud.
He was deep in thought when Guillermo David’s friend and fan at school, sat next to him.
Guillermo was so embarrassed (尴尬的) that he covered his face with his hands. David felt sorry for him. They didn’t talk for the rest of the ride. But when they got off, David asked Guillermo to go to the shoe store together.

【答案】One possible version:
Though Guillermo felt surprised at David’s invitation, he followed David to the shoe store. There, the shopkeeper brought out the orange soccer shoes David dreamed to buy. But David pointed to another pair and said, “A smaller size, please. They’re for my friend.” Guillermo’s face turned red. He tried to speak, but David stopped him. “You always say I’m your hero. Today, let me be one.” The shopkeeper helped Guillermo try on the new shoes. They fit perfectly.
As David went to pay for Guillermo’s shoes, the shopkeeper refused and instead showed him his favourite shoes. “These are for you,” he said. “A true hero deserves a reward.” The two boys were both surprised and filled with gratitude at the shopkeeper’s words. Touched deeply, David realized that his mother would be prouder of this day’s act of kindness than any soccer goal. David had not only gained a new pair of shoes but also the satisfaction of making a real difference.
