At an age when most children are just beginning to explore their academic (学业的) interests, 11-year-old Saxena is already an award-winning scientist and inventor, whose independent research into children’s Type 2 diabetes (糖尿病) has earned recognition at state and national competitions.
Born in Virginia, Saxena moved to California with her parents at age 8. Her journey as an inventor began several years earlier. Saxena started learning to code at age 8. As a fifth-grader, she developed “Healthy Littles powered by SmartGenes,” an app and wearable technology project aimed at helping identify and reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes in children.
Now, as she enters seventh grade, Saxena is continuing to build on research that has already taken her from a middle school classroom in Palo Alto to statewide competitions, the national invention stage and an international biomedical engineering meeting — all before her 12th birthday.
Her interests go well beyond science and technology. Saxena is also a speaker and competitive ballet dancer. Saxena is the founder and “Chief Sparklez Officer” of Sparklez, a nonprofit project. The idea grew from an experience she had when she was 6, after her mother, Sweta Sinha, visited a school for blind girls. Videos her mother brought home made Saxena think about what she could do to help other children.
“I started Sparklez, a non-profit organization, in 2021 to support and encourage kids in need in communities with few resources,” Saxena says. “My goal is to grow this program to support kids in need by helping them through healthy living and good education.” Saxena has also served as a youth ambassador (大使) for children’s health and kindness projects.
Even with her long list of prizes, Saxena is very determined. “Never give up, even if people tell you that you can’t do it or you’re too young,” she says. “It’s never too late or too early to start.”
4. What can we learn about Saxena’s research from paragraph 3?
A. It took her to many important events.
B. It was finished after her 12th birthday.
C. It was mainly done at an international meeting.
D. It helped her complete seventh grade in Palo Alto.
5. What led Saxena to create Sparklez?
A. Her science prizes. B. Her interest in science.
C. Videos from her mother. D. Her coding experiences.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Saxena?
A. Graceful and quiet. B. Helpful and creative.
C. Smart and adventurous. D. Easygoing and humourous.
7. What message does Saxena’s story tell readers?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. He who laughs last laughs best.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C
What do you imagine when you picture the perfect holiday destination? A beach? A comfortable hotel? A chair by a pool? How about a farm? Holiday stays on farms — or “farmcations” — are now booming in the UK, with young people especially attracted by country breaks with fresh air, birdsong and locally grown food.
Recent data (数据) from Airbnb shows that farm stay bookings in the UK went up by 14% this summer compared to last summer. And among younger people aged between 18 and 28, farm stay bookings went up by 41%!
For farmers, the “agritourism” industry provides a way of making money. Working farms are increasingly changing old farm buildings into holiday cottages, adding nice tents to their farms and offering experiences like collecting eggs, cooking, gardening and farm animal tours. Caitlin Owens, owner of Fowlescombe Farm in Devon, said that visitors enjoy being part of the working life of the farm. “Even if only for a night or two, guests can come and connect to the farm — the people who work here, the dogs, the sheep in the fields and the chickens next to the orchards (果园),” she said.
Many farms also offer health and relaxation holidays. Louma in West Dorset, for example, has changed its farm into a health and relaxation center with swimming pools, a sauna (桑拿浴) and a gym. Yoga classes are also offered there.
Freshly cooked, home-grown seasonal food is another big part of the attraction of farmcations. At the Knepp Estate in West Sussex, visitors can learn how to grow their own food in gardening workshops, and eat meat and vegetables grown at Knepp in the farm’s own restaurant.
The Knepp Estate is also the home of a very successful rewilding project that has returned much of the farm to a more natural state that is able to support more wildlife. The farm offers wildlife-watching tours to view wild horses, deer and many uncommon birds.
8. Which can replace the underlined word “booming” in paragraph 1?
A. Becoming formal. B. Remaining steady.
C. Growing very quickly. D. Changing quite slowly.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Doing farm work helps visitors relax greatly.
B. Why Fowlescomb Farm is the most popular.
C. Agritourism benefits both farmers and visitors.
D. How to turn a traditional farm into a working farm.
10. What makes Knepp Estate special?
A. It focuses on health holidays.
B. It is a home to many wild animals.
C. It sells food to local markets.
D. It offers cooking classes to visitors.
11. What can we infer about farmcations from the text?
A. They are major income source of local farmers.
B. They allow visitors to raise farm animals.
C. They provide free fresh home-grown food.
D. They can satisfy different holiday needs.
D
Kids who take part in after-school sports show measurable advantages in brainpower, mental health and physical fitness, researchers reported in the journal Exercise, Sports and Movement.
These advantages remained even after researchers controlled for social, economic and demographic (人口的) differences between kids, the study found. “We find that children and teens who took part in after-school sports regularly had better mental and physical health results than those who didn’t,” senior researcher Nicole Logan said in a news release.
For the study, her team studied data from an ongoing developmental study of children growing up in the New York City area. They compared 391 children and teenagers who joined in after-school sports with another 391 who didn’t join in sports, examining schoolwork, thinking ability, mental health and physical fitness.
Results showed that kids in after-school sports had improved in several areas: the ability to plan, organize and think quickly; language comprehension (理解) skills; grades and other school results; social awareness; and physical health, including strength, flexibility (灵活性), daily energy burn and resting heart rate. According to Logan, these benefits may apply to children from many backgrounds.
“Since health differences remain for many families, our results show that we should encourage fair chance to sports and physical activity to help children grow up healthily,” Logan said. Many families face financial challenges that stop children from joining organized activities. Cost related to equipment, transportation and registration fees can limit participation (参加) for lower-income families. Limited chance to safe spaces for exercise can also create differences. The study’s findings stress the need for schools, local governments, and community organizations to support affordable sports programs for all children. Logan noted that giving more students fair chances to join school and community activities could positively influence child development on a broader scale.
12. What was the study’s main goal?
A. To help kids with mental problems.
B. To test the effects of after-school sports.
C. To show teenagers’ sports preference.
D. To improve school sports classes.
13. How did researchers carry out the study?
A. By following children for many years.
B. By testing children in a laboratory.
C. By asking parents to fill in forms.
D. By comparing two groups of children.
14. Which of the following may Logan agree with?
A. Their study needs further improvement.
B. Equal chance to sports programs matters.
C. Few families can’t pay for kids’ activities.
D. Social differences were not considered in the study.
15. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. After-School Sports Help Children’s Body and Mind
B. After-School Sports: Good for Creative Thinking
C. Why Children Need More Physical Exercise
D. How to Make Sports Fair for All Children

Confidence helps teenagers feel they can make safe, informed decisions and avoid people and situations that aren’t right for them. If your child is confident, they’re also more likely to be positive. When they lack confidence, they might avoid trying new things, or they might not try as hard when things get difficult. ____16____
Be practical.
Look for the practical and positive things your child can do to build skills, achieve goals and experience success. ____17____ For example, “Ada, if you want to be picked for the basketball team, you need to make sure you’re listening to the coach and practising between terms.”
Give your child chances to try new things.
When your child tries plenty of different things, they’ll get to know what they’re good at and what they enjoy. Your child will also learn that most people do well at some things and not so well at others — and that’s OK. ____18____
Encourage your child to keep going.
___19___ You can help them understand that mistakes and difficulties are part of life and can be good chances to learn. It’s OK if your child can’t do something the first time, because they can ask for help, try a different method and improve with practice.
____20____
You can set an example when it comes to confidence. For example, you might talk about how you’re feeling nervous about giving a speech at work. You could tell your child that you’re practising the speech at home so that you’ll be well prepared and confident on the day.
A. Your child may fail sometimes.
B. Set small goals to build success.
C. Model confidence in your own ability.
D. Here are tips for building confidence in your child.
E. Let your child make decisions within manageable risks.
F. You can talk with your child to find out what they’re interested in trying.
G. Giving your child strategies to improve chances of success is a great way to do this.

47. Lily and I were best friends. We sat together, ate lunch together, and walked home together every day. But one Monday morning, everything changed. I saw Lily talking to Kate near the school gate. They were laughing and looking at me. I felt my face turn red. I thought they were making fun of my old shoes. I did not say anything. I just walked past them with my head down. All day, I did not speak to Lily. When she asked me what was wrong, I turned away. I felt angry and hurt.
For the next few days, I stayed away from Lily. I sat alone in class and ate lunch by myself. Lily looked sad and confused. She tried to talk to me many times, but I always said, “Leave me alone.” I did not want to hear her excuses. I thought she was not a true friend. My heart was heavy. I could not focus on my homework. Even my teacher noticed that I was quiet. I felt lonely, but I did not know how to fix it.
On Thursday afternoon, I went to the classroom to get my book. The door was half open. I heard Lily’s voice inside. She was talking to Kate. “I want to give Amy a surprise for her birthday,” Lily said. “That’s why we were laughing. We were planning a party for her. But now she won’t even talk to me. I don’t know what I did wrong.” Kate said, “Maybe you should tell her the truth.” I stood outside the door and felt terrible. I had made a big mistake. I walked into the room.

C. Smart and adventurous. D. Easygoing and humourous.
7. What message does Saxena’s story tell readers?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. He who laughs last laughs best.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. B 15. A

【36题详解】
考查介词。句意:卫冕冠军中国在周二的决赛中以3比0战胜日本,夺得第十枚亚运会女排金牌。victory over sb.

That evening, Lily and Kate helped me plan my birthday party.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Lily looked up, surprised. “Amy!” she said. Seeing me step in, Lily froze for a second, her eyes wide with astonishment. A wave of guilt swept over me, and I bit my lip, struggling to voice my apology. I admitted that I had wrongly assumed they laughed at my old shoes, and regret filled my heart. Tears welled up in my eyes as I begged for her forgiveness. Lily reached out and held my hand gently, relieved that the misunderstanding was cleared up. She explained that she and Kate had been busy preparing my birthday party all along. Never had I imagined such a warm surprise was hidden behind what I saw that morning.
That evening, Lily and Kate helped me plan my birthday party. We sat around the desk, brainstorming creative ideas excitedly. Lily pulled out colorful ribbons and handmade cards she had prepared, her face glowing with delight. I offered to bake small cookies for the guests, grateful for their sincere kindness. What touched me most was that true friendship could survive misunderstandings as long as we chose to communicate bravely. By the end of our discussion, I could hardly wait for the coming birthday party, cherishing our precious friendship more than ever.
