(A summary of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden)
In this story, Mary Lennox, a 10-year-old girl goes to live with her uncle, Mr Craven, after her parents pass away. Her uncle has a huge house, but he is seldom there. Mary spends a lot of time alone and bored. At night she often hears crying coming from somewhere.
One day, Mary hears about a beautiful garden. It belonged to her uncle’s wife. After she died, the garden became a painful memory for him, so he locked it up. No one has seen it for ten years. One morning, Mary finds an old key. When it opens a half-hidden door, she discovers the secret garden inside! Unluckily, nobody has taken care of the plants, and therefore, much of it is in a bad state.
Later, Mary tells her secret to a new friend, Dickon. The young boy knows a lot about gardening, and they work together to make the garden beautiful again. One night, Mary hears someone crying again and discovers Colin, her cousin. He is unhappy and weak because he has lived alone in a hidden room since his mother’s death. He has not walked for years because he thinks he has an illness. Mary and Dickon tell him stories about the garden and take him secretly to see it.
Over time, Colin grows stronger. The fresh air and beautiful garden are good for him, and he proves (证明) that he is not ill when he gets to his feet for the first time in years! The three friends spend time together in the garden and grow happier day by day.
In the end, Mary’s uncle returns home. To his great surprise, he sees Colin walking and running, and he discovers that the secret garden has become as alive and beautiful as it ever was.

Do you want to know some eating habits of a Qing Dynasty emperor (清朝皇帝)?
Most of us eat three meals a day, while a Qing Dynasty emperor ate only two meals a day. The meals were served at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., but it doesn’t mean the emperor wouldn’t eat anything else. Instead, he could ask for snacks any time he wanted. And he could also eat wherever he was working.
On the table, there were usually over 20 dishes, including chicken, duck, fish, pork and vegetables. When the table was set, the emperor did not eat right away. He had to make sure the food was safe. A small silver stick would be put into each dish. Its color would turn black if the food had been poisoned. For more safety, the emperor would ask his servants to taste the dishes first. After that, the emperor could finally enjoy his food, mostly by himself. He wasn’t supposed to eat too much of one dish, because he didn’t want anyone, especially his enemies, to know what he liked or disliked. So usually after three spoons, no matter how much the emperor liked a dish, it would be taken away and ended up as waste.
How about the kitchen? It was managed by the Imperial Household Department (内务府). Hundreds of officials, cooks and servants worked there. Every dish was marked with the name of the cook, so cooking for an emperor was not an easy job!

I put a long black bag in the garage (车库) two days ago. Tonight, in the dark, I would finally take it out. If everything went well, I would finish the job by morning. But I had to make sure no one, not even my wife, saw me.
It was more difficult to get away from the party than I expected. And I had to get my kids to sleep. That was never easy at any time, and tonight it was even harder. As usual, I read them a bedtime story, but I had to stop myself reading too fast or they would find out my secret.
Silence finally came, and acting as a thief in the night, I went out of the house and into the garage. I carried the bag carefully into the garden, my movements quiet and hidden. I didn’t want neighbors to call the police when they saw me.
It was already eleven o’clock. By the light of the moon I started working, trying to keep as quiet as possible. After much effort, my work was finally finished. I looked down at my watch. It was exactly 4:00 in the morning.
Then I went back inside to take a shower and get a few hours of sleep. It wouldn’t be long now before my kids would rush into my room and wake me up to tell me about the Christmas tree that Father Christmas had brought them this year.

Lanzhou beef noodles are one of the top ten noodle dishes in China.
According to historical records, Lanzhou beef noodles developed from hot pot noodles which started during the Qing Dynasty. They were formally created by Ma Baozi in 1915. Born into a poor family, Ma Baozi used to make hot pot beef noodles at home to make a living. He walked around the streets selling the noodles.
Later, he developed the dish by adding boiled cattle and sheep’s liver (牛羊肝) soup to beef noodles. This gave the noodles a great smell and made them delicious. Encouraged by this success, he opened his own restaurant.
From then on, Ma Baozi’s beef noodles became quite famous. In 1925, his son, Ma Jiesan, took over the business. He kept his father’s old ways and made the noodles better. Lanzhou beef noodles are known for their fresh and tasty soup. This shows the hard work and skills of Ma Baozi, his son Ma Jiesan and many other cooks.

考查副词辨析。clearly清楚地;smoothly顺利地;badly严重地。根据“Mom said no ice-cream for me.”可知,咳嗽得厉害,很严重,不准吃冰淇淋。故选C。
2. —Look! There’s a sign outside the Italian restaurant: “New Opening”.

A. may B. can’t C. must
【答案】C
【解析】
【详解】句意:——看!那家意大利餐厅外面有个牌子写着“新开业”。——哦,对!它一定是一家新店。

A. comedies B. documentaries C. dramas
【答案】B
【解析】

A. has made B. was making C. made

考查被动语态。根据“because he had to finish his report on time”可知,他没被允许去参加学校旅行,且该句描述的是过去发生的事情,所以应该用一般过去时的被动语态,其结构是“was/were+动词的过去分词”,主语“He”是第三人称单数,be动词用was,“allow”的过去分词是“allowed”,所以此处应该是“wasn’t allowed”。故选B。
