I no longer needed to work after 5:00 pm. I suddenly had a lot of time of my own. One day, when I was trying on a dress, I knew I should start to run if I didn’t want to throw away all of my old clothes. I joined a running club. At first, I wasn’t brave enough to go to my first session alone. So, in the end I dragged a friend along with me. After that, I knew a few faces, and was confident enough to keep attending. Many people give up running easily. In order to avoid that, I have a poster (海报) on my wall that reminds me how good I feel after a run. It’s what stops me from making excuses. If I’m very busy with work on weekdays, then I will run on Saturday and Sunny mornings. If I have more time, then I will go out after work during the weekdays. Running has opened up so many doors for me. It’s the best thing I have ever done. Through my club I have been to places that I never thought I would travel to. If anyone had told me that I would be running a half marathon in Barcelona one year ago, I never would have believed that. I have been working on my 5km time and I have brought that down to a personal best. I love sharing pictures of me running on my blog. In this way, I have learnt the influence that one small person can have on others. Many people have commented on my photos or my posts. They have said that I’ve encouraged them to get out and run. I never thought that I would have that sort of influence upon others. It’s a great feeling to have helped someone else. 24. Why did the author begin to run? A. She wanted to kill time. B. Her poor health required that. C. Her friends asked her to do that. D. She wanted to lose some weight. 25. What’s the author’s purpose of having that poster on the wall? A. To excuse herself for not running. B. To know when she can go running. C. To encourage herself to keep running. D. To push herself to become an athlete. 26. What has running brought to the author’s life? A. Free travels. B. More job chances. C. Great self-improvement. D. Better management skills. 27. What makes the author happy according to the last paragraph? A. She has become a national role model. B. She can run together with many people. C. Many people are ready to help others. D. Many people follow her example in running. C Today, friendships can develop between people from different countries or even different time zones. Internets help people stay connected, no matter where they are. However, this convenience also has downsides. Real friendships usually grow from spending time together in person, having deep talks, or sharing important experiences. But online friendships often depend on short messages, funny pictures (likes memes), or quick comments, which don’t create the same strong connection. When we chat online, we miss important cues (提示) such as tone of voice, facial expression and body language. Because of lack of these cues, online communication leaves a lot of room for misunderstandings. What’s meant as a harmless joke could easily be taken the wrong way. Online friendships will never really replace (替代) the feeling of face-to-face communication because online, people are sharing information not true feelings. Meeting friends in person actually makes our brains send out dopamine (多巴胺), a chemical that makes us feel happy. Studies show that people who communicate online with friends get 50% less dopamine than those who meet face to face. That’s why online communication can leave us feeling more tired than satisfied. But we don’t have to give up online friendships entirely. Online friendships offer chances to connect, learn, and find support. We can make them more meaningful. One side is using VR avatars that mimic (模仿) real-life gestures and expressions. Another is “Screen-free Saturdays”, where people take a break from the Internet to focus on real-world connections. Some friendships, like those among online gamers, even combine both online and offline communications—they play games together virtually and also meet in person when possible. 28. What can we know from paragraph 1? A. Online friendships can be more natural. B. Traditional friendships are more meaningful. C. Online friendships can’t make deeper connections. D. Traditional friendships can connect people quickly. 29. What does the underlined word “lack” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Absence. B. Error. C. Difference. D. Change. 30. Why is dopamine mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To show its role in improving health. B. To explain its influence on making friends. C. To show why online communication feels tiring. D. To explain why face-to-face communication is easy. 31. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Advice on making offline friends. B. Ways to improve online friendships. C. Advantages of playing online games. D. Reasons for quitting traditional friendships. D Imagine a city that rewards (奖励) you for making environmentally-friendly choices—ride a bike instead of driving to receive free entry to a museum, or collect rubbish to get a free cup of coffee. That’s what Copenhagen is doing through its CopenPay program. In 2024, the city introduced the program. It was a program where thoughtful actions allow visitors to win free cultural experiences. The program was more successful than expected. During the 4-week run of CopenPay in 2024, bike rentals increased by 29% and tons of rubbish were collected. So, CopenPay is back in 2025, with 100 attractions taking part. CopenPay 2025 lasts twice as long, running for a total of 9 weeks. “By encouraging thoughtful actions during their visits, CopenPay is changing how visitors in Copenhagen travel. Rather than bringing more tourists to the city, the goal of CopenPay is to guide visitors and raise their awareness (意识) about the choices they make when traveling—exploring Copenhagen in a more thoughtful way while being rewarded with unique experiences,” said Soren Tegen Pedersen, CEO of Wonderful Cophnhagen. This year, CopenPay rewards visitors who arrive in Copenhagen by train with benefits such as free bike rentals, yoga classes, guided tours, and free entry to some of the city’s top attractions. Once there, CopenPay also encourages visitors to stay in the city longer by offering rewards, which helps reduce total travel—by rewarding longer stays. “Tourism must move from being an environmental burden (负担) to a force for positive changes. With CopenPay, we aim to raise travelers’ awareness about choices. We provide our visitors with an easy and locally based way to contribute to our city. Hopefully, they will leave encouraged—both when they return home and on their next trip.” Pedersen said. 32. What can visitors get through the CopenPay program by riding a bike instead of driving? A.
