The Internet came a little later than computers. It was about twenty-five years later than computers. Tim Berners-Lee invented it that year. Because of the Internet the world is becoming smaller and smaller. We can use computers and the Internet to read books, write letters, do shopping, play games or make friends. If we want to learn more about the outside world, there is no need to go outside. Just turn on our computers and search online, then the outside world appears in the screen. I was born in New York, but I grew up in San Francisco. I began to live in London 25 years ago. If I am asked now where I want to live forever, I would say London. But I will always be American.
In San Francisco, every day my sisters and I were taken to play in the parks as children. I didn’t go to school. I only had three hours of formal education when I was five. I was sent to school in the morning but came home at noon on the first day. I said I didn’t enjoy it and I didn’t learn anything. My parents thought that school was unsuitable for me.
Then my mother taught me and my two sisters at home, but we also had other teachers. About once a week we walked to Golden Gate Park. While we were walking, my mother taught me to read music. One day I noticed a little toy train in the window of a shop and I remember now how I’d like to have it. I couldn’t say “r” when I was small. My mother said if I could say an “r” well, I would have the toy train. I practiced and practiced. Then one morning I woke everybody up with my “r” s. I got the toy train. I usually get the things I want in life but I work hard for them.

Chinese pangolins (穿山甲) live in the south of the Yangtze River in China. They have hard skin and help to protect trees in the forest. But they are endangered now. Experts said that Chinese pangolins are functionally dying out (功能性灭绝), Beijing News reported. This means they cannot find a match and give birth in the wild.
According to a national wildlife survey, there were some 60,000 Chinese pangolins in different places, in the 1990s. Also, they face a heavy loss of habitat (栖息地).
China is now thinking about upgrading (升级) its pangolin protection efforts to the highest level, Xinhua reported. By doing this, the government would protect them at the same level as giant pandas. The ocean isn’t a quiet place as you imagine. Most of the noise is caused by sea animals themselves. Most of them use sound to find what they eat, whom they play with, or which general position they move towards. But the noise from human activities is increasingly troubling the lives of ocean animals. According to scientists, loud noise may cause more whales and other sea animals to take the ground (搁浅). Researchers recorded only five of these events in the first half of the 20th century. But from 1950 to 2004, they recorded more than 1,200 times. These were perhaps because of the use of sonar (声呐) under water since 1950.
Another main reason for loud underwater noise is pile driving (打桩). Piles are driven deep into the floor of the ocean. Driving in a single pile can take several hours and as many as 5,000 hits. This process creates a lot of noise.
To control that noise, some companies are making use of tiny bubbles (气泡). A single bubble is easily broken. However, the bubble wall can make pile driving quieter. The bubble wall is usually created in this way: A tube is placed in a ring around a pile. Air is then let out through closely spaced openings on the tube. When the bubbles rise, they act as a wall and take in some of the noise. Some more of the sound reflects (反射) back and becomes stuck inside the wall. Such bubble walls are really helpful. Scientists found that these walls can reduce noise by 30 decibels (分贝). A German company even says that its Big Bubble Wall can cut down the noise of pile driving by up to 95 percent. What exciting news it is! Such small changes in human activities can help make life better for animals in the oceans.

In San Francisco, every day my sisters and I were taken to play in the parks as children. I didn’t go to school. I only had three hours of formal education when I was five.
Since then, this number has dropped by 90 percent mainly because of several reasons. First, lots of people break the law to kill them for a high price in the black market or catch these animals and move them to neighboring countries where selling is easier. Also, they face a heavy loss of habitat (栖息地).
China is now thinking about upgrading (升级) its pangolin protection efforts to the highest level, Xinhua reported. By doing this, the government would protect them at the same level as giant pandas. This means people would only be able to sell or use pangolin products in certain situations, for example for scientific research. They would also need permission from the government if they plan to do so.
