The origin of Land Art can be traced to Stonehenge in the United Kingdom and the Nazca Lines in southern Peru. But the modern movement itself didn’t emerge until the late 1960s. Below are some artworks that help tell the story of Land Art as it has expanded and evolved since then.
A Line Made By Walking

As a six-year-old Canadian schoolboy, Ryan found it hard to believe that many people in Africa lacked clean water. Seeing the drinking fountain just ten steps away from his classroom, he wondered why African children had to walk ten kilometers for dirty water that made them sick. He decided to help.
Ryan initially aimed to earn $70 for a well through chores. However, a charity informed him a well actually cost $2,000. Determined, Ryan expanded his efforts by persuading classmates and neighbors to donate. With a family friend’s help, his story spread publicly, and he soon raised the full amount.
A well was built near a Ugandan primary school, freeing children from long, dangerous walks for water. When Ryan visited, they welcomed him with joyful songs, dances, and gifts. Seeing the direct impact of his work, Ryan felt profound happiness.
This success inspired Ryan to establish a foundation, encouraging broader participation in his mission. The foundation continues to grow, supporting well-building projects across Africa. To date, over 800,000 people in 16 countries have gained access to clean water.
Reflecting on his journey, Ryan now believes the essential question isn’t “Why don’t I help?” but “How can I help today?”. His story proves that a child’s determination can create lasting change.
4. How much did it cost to build the well?
A. 70 dollars. B. 1,300 dollars.
C. 2,000 dollars. D. 800,000 dollars.
5. How did Ryan raise more dollars?
A. By telling his story to his uncle.
B. By encouraging his family to help.
C. By cleaning more windows and doing gardening.
D. By persuading his classmates and neighbours to donate money.
6. Why did Ryan set up a foundation?

Sharks: Dangerous or Endangered?
We see a woman swimming at night in dark sea. Suddenly, she is pulled underwater. She surfaces, cries in fear, then disappears forever. This is the opening scene from the 1975 film Jaws, showing a shark attack. It tells the story of a great white shark that attacks and kills swimmers. Jaws was a great success, attracting huge audiences and winning many awards. It strengthened people’s long-held idea of the great white shark as a dangerous animal.
People have always been scared of sharks, but Jaws made things worse. It made people frightened of sharks, especially of the great white shark. Many people who saw the film started to believe that sharks were bad animals that ate humans. Some people stopped swimming in the sea, afraid of the horrible creature from the film. Other people started fishing for sharks, killing as many as they could. At that time, nobody cared if sharks were killed, or how many were killed. People just wanted them killed.
After 1975, the number of large sharks around America fell quickly, and soon fell around the world. This was not only due to fear of sharks, but also finning. Finning is a type of fishing where sharks are caught and their fins cut off. The sharks are thrown back into the sea where they die slowly and painfully. The fins are used in shark fin soup. Finning kills millions of sharks a year.
Finning would have an unexpected effect upon Peter Benchley, the man who wrote the book the film Jaws was based on. In 1980, Benchley was diving when he came across an awful sight. It was an area where fishermen were finning, and the sea floor was covered with dead sharks. Benchley saw sharks being killed and this caused a deep change in him. He came to see people as a danger to sharks, rather than the other way round. From that day on, he fought to protect sharks. He admitted that his book was wrong about sharks’ behaviour. “Sharks don’t target humans,” he said. Experts have proved that sharks do not see people as food, and they attack us by mistake. Only around six people are killed by sharks every year.
Fortunately, not everyone who watched the film Jaws became afraid of sharks—some became interested in understanding them. Today, as we learn more about sharks, more people than ever want to protect them from extinction.
8. The opening scene of the film Jaws is mentioned to _________.
A. introduce the topic
B. make people aware of sharks
C. tell sharks are lovely
D. show its anger in the sea
9. Which of the following was led to by the film?
A. Many sharks were killed for finning.
B. Children were more frightened of sharks.
C. Most people stop swimming in the sea.
D. People believe sharks are horrible animals.
10. What does the third paragraph mainly tell?
A. Finning led to a fall in the number of sharks.
B. Finning should be forbidden by the law.
C. It’s cruel for the sharks to be killed for profit.
D. It’s the film that makes finning popular.
11. How does the author of the text feel about the future of the sharks?
A. Worried. B. Optimistic.
C. Unconcerned. D. Pessimistic.
D
“Computer software to identify AI-generated text exists, but most programs share one weakness: no sense of style,” says Jun Jang, a 16-year-old junior at Oxford High School in Mississippi. His new software hopes to fill that gap.
Jun says he often sees students admit using AI tools on classroom assignments. “But relying too much on these tools can be harmful,” Jun says, pointing to a 2025 study published in Societies. “I figured that by solving this issue, I could assist teachers as well as help kids become more creative and contribute more innovation.”
Currently, most AI detectors look at one text by itself, and search for certain AI traits (特征) but don’t account for someone’s unique style of writing. Jun’s program instead analyzes a text known to have been written by a student without AI help. How? Schools already use browser-lockdown programs that block access to AI writing tools. A teacher could collect writing samples at the beginning of the school year when students are in this lockdown mode and “cannot cheat”. After that, the teacher can employ his new program to compare future work by the student with those early samples.
Jun’s software then reviews the text from a known author for how that person used such things as punctuation and grammar. Did the writer regularly use long, complex sentences, simple ones or a mix of both? His software searches for such personal styles in someone’s writing. Then it looks for evidence of the same style traits in a second text. By carefully examining the two, it judges whether both share the same author.
To test his model, he trained his model on some data, and then gave it a new set of data and asked it to identify whether the two documents came from the same author. Compared to author-verifying software on the market, Jun’s model was more veracious. He reports a 25% increase across the board”.
If a student’s work gets flagged as AI-written, Jun’s model explains how the model arrived at that judgment. Teachers will understand how a model made its decision, therefore being able to talk to their students about those issues.
12. What is a feature of Jun’s software?
A. It considers writers’ writing styles.
B. It is poor at analyzing AI texts.
C. It fails to search for certain Al traits.
D. It can increase data processing speed.
13. How does Jun’s software detect AI-generated texts?
A. By quoting a teacher. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By providing statistics.
14. What does the underlined word “veracious” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Creative. B. Accurate. C. Complex. D. Practical.
15 How can Jun’s software benefit teachers?
A. Generate writing samples. B. Identify students’ emotions.
C. Simplify grading processes. D. Explain detection decisions.

I begged my mother to let me go camping. For months I’d talked non-stop about the forest adventures and watching stars at night shown in the camp brochure. “It’s a chance to be on my own. And I will learn something,” I’d say. Finally, my mother agreed, and I spent weeks packing something necessary — sure this would be the best summer ever.
The first day at Camp Redwood was amazing. As soon as I stepped off the bus, the fresh pine smell and the sound of birds singing made me feel alive. I met Sarah, my camp roommate, and we quickly became friends. That evening, we roasted some food over the campfire and then gathered in the tent to tell stories, each of which made us jump and laugh.
Over the following days, the camp leader, Mr. Carter, patiently taught us to identify different bird calls by their sounds and deal with accidents. We also learned to make some special and beautiful items with what could be found in nature. I secretly made a hat with some leaves for my mother.
Everything was perfect — until the last night.
A thunderstorm hit suddenly. Rain beat down on the tent and wind howled like a pack of wolves. Sarah and I stuck together, scared. Our tent started leaking, and our sleeping bags became completely wet. “I want to go home, now!” Sarah cried. Thinking of what I had said to my mother, I grabbed the extra plastic sheet from my backpack and shouted, “Let’s fix this!”
We struggled in the dark, our hands shaking from the cold and fear as we tried to tie the plastic sheet over the tent. The wind pushed against us, making it hard to hold the slippery fabric. Just as we tied the last knot (结), Mr. Carter arrived with a flashlight. His eyes opened wide when he saw the fixed tent. “You two did that?” he asked, surprised. We nodded proudly. Mr. Carter offered to take a photo of Sarah and me achieving something amazing. At that moment, I felt eager to go home to share something with my mother.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
The next day, when I got home, my mother saw my muddy shoes and asked, “How was it?”

根据第一段中“We see a woman swimming at night in dark sea. Suddenly, she is pulled underwater. She surfaces, cries in fear, then disappears forever. This is the opening scene from the 1975 film Jaws, showing a shark attack. (我们看到一个女人在黑夜里游泳。突然,她被拉到水下。她浮出水面,恐惧地哭泣,然后永远消失。这是1975年电影《大白鲨》的开场场景,展示了一次鲨鱼袭击)”和“It strengthened people’s long-held idea of the great white shark as a dangerous animal. (它强化了人们长久以来认为大白鲨是危险动物的观念)”可知,作者在描述电影《大白鲨》的开场场景后,直接点明了其社会影响——强化了人们对鲨鱼的固有危险印象。这表明作者是通过这个广为人知的文化现象来引出本文要探讨的核心话题:鲨鱼是危险的还是濒危的?因此,提及电影开头场景的目的是为了引出主题。故选A项。
根据第二段中“Many people who saw the film started to believe that sharks were bad animals that ate humans. (许多看过这部电影的人开始相信鲨鱼是吃人的坏动物)”可知,这部电影导致人们相信鲨鱼是可怕的动物。故选D项。

This was not only due to fear of sharks, but also finning.(1975年后,美国周围的大型鲨鱼数量迅速下降,不久后全球范围内也是如此。这不仅是因为对鲨鱼的恐惧,还因为割鳍)”和“Finning kills millions of sharks a year. 故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Fortunately, not everyone who watched the film Jaws became afraid of sharks—some became interested in understanding them. Today, as we learn more about sharks, more people than ever want to protect them from extinction. (幸运的是,并非每个看过《大白鲨》的人都变得害怕鲨鱼——有些人变得对了解它们感兴趣。今天,随着我们对鲨鱼的了解越来越多,比以往任何时候都多的人想要保护它们免于灭绝)”可知,作者在结尾提到越来越多人了解并想要保护鲨鱼,这表明作者对鲨鱼的未来持乐观(Optimistic)态度。故选B项。

A. Creative. B. Accurate. C. Complex. D. Practical.
15. How can Jun’s software benefit teachers?
A. Generate writing samples. B. Identify students’ emotions.
C. Simplify grading processes. D. Explain detection decisions.
A 13. C 14. B 15. D

prevent...from doing... 故填being washed。

I begged my mother to let me go camping. For months, I’d talked non-stop about the forest adventures and watching stars at night shown in the camp brochure.

The next day, when I got home, my mother saw my muddy shoes and asked, “How was it?” Sensing her voice trembling slightly as she knelt to brush dirt off my shoes, I shared the highlights of my camping trip, especially what happened the night before. Then I carefully pulled out a photo from my pocket — Sarah and I smiled widely through rain-soaked hair, plastic sheet strings twisted around our fingers as we tied the knot — and said, “I learned something.” Digging into the depths of my bag, I gently placed the hat into my mother’s hand and said, “This is for you.”
My mother had a good look at the photo and the gift and said, “You’re absolutely right!” I saw pride in her eyes and added excitedly, “I learned that being on my own isn’t about doing everything alone. It’s about facing challenges with courage and cleverness — and sometimes with a friend.” My mother’s eyes softened as she put on the hat carefully. “I’m so proud of you,” she whispered, pulling me into a warm hug. At that moment, I knew this was truly the best summer ever — not despite the storm, but because of it.
