I looked at Harry, my dog. He was jumping up and down. Just at that moment, I saw some people running through the trees. They were (8) ______________! They finally put out the fire. Luckily, Harry and I were safe.

Further thinking
1. “Outside, people were running in all directions while pieces of glass and bricks were raining down.” How do you understand the phrase “rain down”?
“Rain down” means to fall to the ground from the sky like rain. It shows that the number of bricks and broken windows was very large. It also shows that the earthquake was very powerful, and the situation at that time was very dangerous and urgent.
Further thinking
2. Do you think Timmy did the right thing? Would you do anything different? Give reasons for your answers.
Most of what he did was right. But I don’t think I would shout for help if I were trapped. Instead, I would knock on the water pipe because sounds can travel better and faster through water pipes than through air.
Further thinking
3. What do you think people need to do to prepare for possible earthquakes?
To prepare for possible earthquakes, we should learn more about earthquakes and safety tips, and have earthquake drills at least once a year.
Thank you!
