第二节(满分 25 分)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: my brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise—a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he’ll get over it, I reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing health issues, and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.

【范文】
I realized it was me who was at fault. My selfishness and lack of empathy had hurt the person closest to me. My brother had lost his beloved wife and struggled with poor health—Toby wasn’t just a dog, but his lifeline, the only one that stayed by his side through dark days. I shouldn’t have dismissed his feelings so casually or forced him to choose between his companion and the gathering. Regret weighed heavy on my heart as I recalled his disappointed face that rainy evening. I knew I had to make it right.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door. When he opened it, surprise crossed his face, followed by a hint of warmth. Toby bounded over, wagging his tail and nuzzling my hand. I handed him the biscuits and said softly, “I’m so sorry, brother. I was thoughtless and didn’t see how hard things have been for you.” His eyes softened as he patted Toby’s head. “I’ve missed you too,” he murmured. We hugged tightly, the tension melting away. That day, we sat chatting for hours, with Toby curled up beside us— proof that love and understanding can mend any rift.

A Birthday Surprise
I stood at the kitchen window watching Papa as he sat in the old, wooden lawn chair staring out at the lake. Ralph, his old black dog, lay on the ground at his side. Papa's hand absently stroked(抚摩) the head of his old companion as they dreamed the dreams of old men and old dogs in the evening sun. "He does this day after day?" I asked Mama.
She nodded, sadness filling her eyes. "I don't know what to do for him. There is a strong desire in his eyes that I can't satisfy-a desire for the past. The past can't be brought back to the present. Once days are gone, they are gone forever," Mama sighed.
"I’m going down to talk to him," I said.
I called out to Papa and handed him a cup of coffee. "What are you and Ralph thinking about all these hours you spend out here?" I asked.
"We're not thinking," he said softly. "We're wishing." I sat on the grass beside his chair. "Wishing for what?" "For the impossible, I suppose," he sighed. "You always told me that nothing was impossible if you wanted it badly enough and were willing to work hard for it," I reminded him.
He laughed softly, but there was no amusement in the sound. "But Ralph and I have come to learn that when you reach our age, some things are actually impossible." "Maybe I can help you. What do you want so badly?" I asked.
Papa grinned(咧嘴大笑), and his eyes shone brightly at the thought of his dream becoming a reality. "Ralph and I want to fix up the old boat and go out on the lake again. We used to spend all day out on the lake, fishing, drinking beer and eating sandwiches," Papa said.
Yes, I remember. When I was young, Papa and Ralph often enjoyed themselves on the lake on weekends. They'd start for home when the sun went down, totally satisfied with themselves and with life. Now, Papa was almost eighty-five years old and had a heart condition, so Mama was horrified by the idea of him going out on the lake again at first. But eventually I managed to convince her.

【范文】
After Mama agreed, I persuaded my friends to join in my secret plan. We decided to repair the old boat in the shed without Papa knowing. Every weekend, we gathered tools and quietly worked on the boat, sanding, painting, and checking the engine. Ralph often sat nearby, watching with curious eyes, as if guarding our secret. The boat, though worn, gradually regained its former appearance. Mama helped by keeping Papa occupied with small tasks or conversations away from the shed. Our hearts were filled with anticipation, hoping to restore not just a boat, but a precious piece of Papa's past.
On the day of Papa's birthday,we were all eager to give him a surprise. I led Papa and Ralph to the lakeside, where our friends waited beside the fully restored boat. Papa froze, his eyes wide with disbelief, then slowly filled with tears. "Happy birthday, Papa! Today, you and Ralph are going fishing again," I announced. With our careful assistance, Papa stepped into the boat. As the engine started and the boat glided onto the lake, his face lit up with a radiant smile. Watching him sit contentedly with Ralph under the sun, I knew we had given him back not just a day on the water, but a cherished memory revived.

Being a twelve-year-old girl is hard; being a twelve-year-old girl with dyslexia(阅读障碍)makes it even
harder.
I was standing in my mom's bedroom with my unfinished math homework in my hand.“I can't do it, Mom; I don't understand it!" Although I couldn't see clearly through my teary eyes,I could still sense my mom's face
was filled with concern.
"Can I see your homework, honey?” As instructed, I slowly handed over the paper. After a short pause she
excitedly announced, “You got the fifth question right!” Shrugging my shoulders, I replied, “Yeah, but the rest
are probably wrong."
Mom lifted my chin with a gentle hand and said, “Just because you got some answers wrong doesn't make the
answer you got right any less impressive!”
As we stood in silence, she lightly held my shoulders and slowly turned me so I could see myself in the large
mirror. "Now repeat after me!" Mom said in a kind but demanding voice,“I DID IT!” She paused as she waited for me to obey her.
With a reassuring hand on my shoulder, Mom said, “You know that I went through, and still go through, the same hardships. But I know I'm competent, smart and successful and it's so important that my daughter knows how intelligent she is. Now, let's take a look at your homework.”
Together we looked through and completed the math homework. After each problem we got right, we would
high five as if I had just won a huge victory.
"Now, tomorrow when you are doing your math, I want you to take the problems one at a time and say 'I
DID IT!' after completing each one. Okay?" said my mom.
“Okay, I'll try.”

【范文】
The next day, I sat at my desk in front of my frightening math test. My palms sweated as I stared at the first problem, but Mom’s voice echoed in my head: “Take it one at a time.” I gripped my pencil tightly, scribbling calculations slowly. When I finished the first question, I whispered, “I DID IT!” quietly enough not to disturb classmates. With each solved problem, my confidence grew—even when a tricky equation made me pause, I took a deep breath and kept going. By the time I handed in the test, my chest felt light, not heavy with fear.
As I walked through the school gate, I had a smile on my face. Mom waited by the sidewalk, her eyes lighting up when she saw me. “How was it?” she asked. “I did my best—and I said ‘I DID IT!’ every time!” I exclaimed, bouncing over to hug her. When the test results came back a few days later, I’d passed with flying colors. But more importantly, I’d learned: dyslexia didn’t define me. With courage and self-belief, even the scariest challenges could be overcome. From then on, “I DID IT!” became my go-to mantra, pushing me through every hard day.

My Best Examination
One day, while at work in a coal-mine in Malden, I happened to overhear two miners talking about a great
school for poor people in Virginia. It was Hampton Institute. The school was established to provide opportunities for poor but worthy students who could work out all or a part of the cost of board, and at the
same time be taught some trade or industry.
I was on fire constantly with one ambition, and that was to go to school. I decided at once to go to that school. Finally the great day came and I started for Hampton. I had only a small, cheap bag that contained what few articles of clothing I could get. The distance from Malden to Hampton is about five hundred miles. I had not been away from home many hours before it began to grow painfully evident that I did not have enough money to pay my fare(路费)to Hampton.
By walking and begging rides in some way, I finally reached the grounds of the Hampton Institute after a number of days, tired and dirty. As soon as possible after reaching, I presented myself before the headteacher for assignment to a class. Having been so long without proper food,a bath, and change of clothing, I was like a worthless loafer(游荡者).
I did not, of course, make a very favourable impression upon her, and I could see at once that there were doubts in her mind about the wisdom of admitting me as a student. I tried to impress her in all the ways I could with my worthiness. How I wished that I could get a chance to show what was in me.
After some time, the headteacher said to me,“The adjoining(隔壁的)classroom needs sweeping. Take the broom and sweep it.”

【范文】
It occurred to me at once that here was my chance. I grabbed the broom eagerly, as if it were a precious key to my dream. I swept every corner thoroughly, not missing a single speck of dust. I scrubbed the wooden floor with a wet cloth until it gleamed, and arranged the scattered chalks neatly in the tray. My hands grew sore, but I kept going—this was more than a cleaning task; it was my examination of worth. I even wiped the windowsills and dusted the bookshelves, determined to leave no room for doubt.
The headteacher went into the room and inspected the floor and closets. Her eyes widened with surprise as she ran a finger along the spotless surface. She opened the closets, finding everything in perfect order. “You’ve done an excellent job,” she said, a warm smile spreading across her face. “Your diligence speaks louder than words.” She told me I was admitted. Tears of joy welled up in my eyes. That day, I passed the best examination of my life—not with pen and paper, but with honesty and hard work. It taught me that every opportunity, no matter how small, is a chance to prove oneself.

Eight-year-old Evan stood by the sidewalk watching as Mrs Carter opened her flower shop. He felt relieved that the shop hadn't closed forever. Two days ago, when he passed by, there was a closed sign on the door and a note saying Mrs Carter was sick. Evan was worried that he would never be able to get his "dream job" if the shop remained closed for too long.
Mrs Carter, an 85-year-old woman, spotted Evan looking in her shop's direction and waved hello to him. Excitedly, Evan ran up to her and expressed his desire to work at the shop. Mrs Carter laughed quietly, finding it amusing that an eight-year-old wanted a job. Evan confidently explained that since his dad passed away, he had learned how to do various tasks, like taking out the rubbish, making sandwiches, and assisting his mom, Stacey, with groceries. He didn't want any payment for his work; instead, he simply wanted a bouquet(花束)for his mom's upcoming birthday. He believed in working hard for what he wanted, just as his mom had taught him.
Impressed by Evan's determination, Mrs Carter agreed to hire him. She asked if he knew how to tie ribbons around flowers, and when she heard Evan's affirmative(肯定的)response, they got down to making bouquets. Evan was excited to assist Mrs Carter every evening for a whole week, and his presence brought joy to her boring work. Customers found Evan adorable and entertaining, which resulted in increased flower purchases and booming business for Mrs Carter.
On Evan's last day, Mrs Carter felt emotional. Their bond had grown strong, and she saw him as a grandchild. As she prepared a splendid bouquet for Evan's mother, tears welled up in her eyes. She invited him to visit her shop in the future, and Evan promised to tell his mom about her.

With the bouquet in hand, Evan rushed home to celebrate Mom's birthday. He burst through the door, eyes shining with excitement. “Mom, happy birthday!” he yelled, holding out the vibrant bouquet. Stacey dropped the dish she was washing and turned, her face softening at the sight of her son and the beautiful flowers. “Oh, Evan!” she exclaimed, pulling him into a tight hug. Tears of joy glistened in her eyes as she smelled the blossoms. Evan chattered happily about his week with Mrs. Carter, telling her how kind she was and how much fun he’d had. Stacey listened warmly, proud of her son’s diligence and kindness.
As Evan handed his mom the bouquet, they were surprised to discover an envelope with several hundred-dollar bills inside. Stacey opened it carefully, and a note fell out: “For a wonderful mom and her amazing son—thank you for bringing light to my shop. With love, Mrs. Carter.” Both mother and son were moved to tears. “We must go thank her tomorrow,” Stacey said softly. Evan nodded eagerly. That night, as they admired the flowers, Stacey hugged Evan tightly. “You’ve given me the best birthday gift ever,” she said. The bouquet not only brought beauty to their home but also a heartfelt connection that would last a lifetime.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the Earth. If we didn't see any rain soon, we would lose everything. It was on that day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the only miracle I have seen in my life.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking towards the woods. I could only see his back. He wasn't walking in his usual way. He was obviously walking with great effort, trying to be as still as possible.Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, towards the house. I went back to making sandwiches, thinking that whatever he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that unusual way towards the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill the water he carried. I followed him secretly as he went into the woods. Branches and thorns(刺)slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He might have a much greater purpose, I thought. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing sight. Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them, at the sight of which I almost screamed for him to get away. A huge buck(雄鹿)was dangerously close. But the buck didn't threaten him nor even move as Billy knelt down. And then I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from thirst and heat, lift its head with great effort to lap(舔)up the water cupped in my beautiful boy's hands.

【范文】
When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house. I quickly stepped behind a tree so he wouldn't see me, my heart pounding not with fear but with overwhelming pride. I watched his small figure disappear down the path, his mission clear in his determined steps. Back in the kitchen, I heard the faucet(水龙头)running again. Through the window, I saw him carefully holding his cupped hands, water already dripping between his small fingers as he began his slow, deliberate walk back towards the woods.
Instead of scolding him like his father, I decided to help him. I filled every pot and bucket I could find with water and quietly carried them to the edge of the woods. Seeing me, Billy's face lit up with a surprised smile. Wordlessly, we worked together, creating a small, makeshift water station. Soon, my husband and his brothers, curious about the commotion, joined us. They brought more containers. For the rest of the afternoon, our family wasn't fighting the drought for our own survival; we were simply ensuring a suffering creature had a chance to live. As we finished, the sky, which had been relentlessly clear for weeks, darkened with gathering clouds.

The summer finally came. That afternoon, the hot sun was shining brightly, making the tree leaves almost burn and making people's bodies seem to be on fire. Having nothing interesting to do at home, I decide to go to the pool to enjoy the coolness instead of going swimming. The reason was simple- I still couldn't swim. I was impatient, and I always failed to do something and suffered losses. So the swimming lesson was put off again and again.
Upon arriving at the gym's pool, I was greeted by a lively scene. Some people just jumped into the water, with hands entering first and the body following in a smooth motion. Some were kicking their legs rhythmically below the surface. All were happy. That was infectious, and I couldn't help but feel deep admiration. Then I made a decision!
Taking a deep breath, I followed their example, closing my eyes and jumping into the “vast water” with a plop(扑通声).
At this moment, my head was pointing to the ground and my feet to the sky. When I “plopped” to the
bottom, my whole body was swinging hard and my hands and feet lost their ability to feel. I just felt water
rushing towards me, and my nose was filled with water. It was very terrible. Suddenly, I was hit by something. I struggled out of the light blue water bit by bit as if being dragged.
"That's horrible!" I shouted loudly, and while I was complaining, I suddenly realized that I couldn't
swim in the first place, so why should I be shocked? Just when I decided to stay away from water, someone gently patted my shoulder and said,“Don't be discouraged, little girl. Look, swimming requires..." The lady introduced herself as Allison. She gave me a “lecture" on how to hold my breath, how to kick gently, and how to start with floating with the help of a swimming ring, being patient while giving me a demonstration.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;2.请按如下格式作答。
"Why not try one more time?”said Allison.______________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________
As the day drew to a close, I still could not swim very well._____________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________
【范文】
"Why not try one more time?" said Allison. Her patient eyes held no pressure, only quiet encouragement. Swallowing my fear, I nodded. Clinging to the swimming ring, I slowly lowered myself into the water. This time, I didn't jump. I focused on her instructions: a deep breath, a gentle kick, and relaxing my tense body. To my surprise, the water didn't feel like an enemy anymore. It began to hold me, and with Allison's steady hands offering support, I managed to float, my face breaking into the water with a nervous grin.
As the day drew to a close, I still could not swim very well. My movements were clumsy, and I could only manage a few feet before needing to stop. But something fundamental had shifted. The burning impatience was gone, replaced by the cool understanding that progress comes with calm, persistent practice. Walking away from the pool, I didn't feel the sting of failure. Instead, I felt a light, refreshing hope. The water was no longer a barrier; it was a promise, waiting for me to return, one patient stroke at a time.

[高分句型1] I focused on her instructions: a deep breath, a gentle kick, and relaxing my tense body.(运用冒号引出具体解释说明,清晰罗列动作要点,使叙述富有节奏感和指导性。)
[高分句型2] The burning impatience was gone, replaced by the cool understanding that progress comes with calm, persistent practice.(使用“replaced by...”过去分词短语作状语,并衔接“that”引导的同位语从句,生动对比了情绪的前后变化,并深刻揭示了领悟的内涵。)
[高分句型3] The water was no longer a barrier; it was a promise, waiting for me to return, one patient stroke at a time.(通过分号构成并列句,并使用“no longer...; it was...”的对比结构,后接“waiting...”现在分词短语作伴随状语,将“水”这一意象从负面转化为充满希望的象征,结尾部分“one...at a time”的表述余韵悠长,点明主题。)

Being a twelve-year-old girl is hard; being a twelve-year-old girl with dyslexia(阅读障碍)makes it even
