As a company strategist,I'm used to showing up with authority.Playing the expert
is an exhausting business,which is why,on a much-needed Costa Rican leave,I was
particularly out of my depth as I stood on a stretch of piping hot sand as a beginner,a
9-foot surfboard under my arm.At work, being unsure felt like a burden, winding me up
tight. Here,it was plain embarrassing, with the entire beach watching.
“Are you ready?”my instructor asked.“Let'sgo!”My answer surprised me,butI
meant it.I loved the beauty and power of the ocean and dreamed of controlling its
elemental energy.
My instructor demonstrated how to push the board through the violent waves, while
walking with "the stingray shuffle",rubbing feet over sand to create shakings that would
tell any poisonous burrowed rays()to escape my approach. When we were finally
waist-deep,he showed me how to turn and ride back to shore on my stomach.Nothing
would stop me now."Remember the stingray shuffle!"my instructor called.
I forced myself to slow, eager to try again and again. This,I learned,is the power of a
beginner's mind.Failures become stepping-stones to success.Setbacks transform into lessons.
Slowly,I progressed.But I was not yet a master.The awe of newness faded.I
considered quitting.But I wanted to taste their freedom.So I carried on.I'd found a non-
judgmental curiosity about my experience that kept me going.Perhaps I'd tasted the
seasoned surfers'freedom after all.
Whether the next wave knocked me off course or became the best ride of my life,I
didn't need to know exactly what was coming.I'd never be the expert.Fresh challenges
kept rolling in,each one filled with possibility and opportunities for growth.
Suddenly,my career looked a little different.Sure,I have expertise,but I don't need
to be "the expert".The mastery is in the process of discovery and response,of finding a
way forward,whatever comes.
24.What does the underlined phrase "out of my depth"mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Untroubled.
B.Imbalanced.
C.Unchallenged.
D.Inexperienced.

Just like people faced with a sea of options at the grocery store, bees feeding in
grassland encounter many different flowers at once. They must decide which ones to visit
for food, but it isn't always a straightforward choice.
Flowers offer two types of food:nectar and pollen, which can vary in important
ways.Nectar,for instance,can change in concentration,volume,refill rate and
accessibility. It also contains secondary metabolites(代谢物),such as caffeine and
nicotine, which can be either disagreeable or appealing, depending on how much is
present.Similarly, pollen contains proteins and lipids, which affect nutritional quality.
When faced with choices, you'd expect bees to pick the flowers with the best nectar
and pollen. But they don't.Like human shoppers, their decisions depend on their recent
experience with similar flowers and what other flowers are available.
Humans are sometimes illogical.Winning $5 after $1 is exciting,but after $10 it's
disappointing.Perceptions affect product labels too.People expect fancy-labeled wine to be
better.Context matters in choices.Companies explore these unreasonable behaviors in
pricing, packaging, ads, and design.Research shows bumblebees and humans share many
of these behaviors.
A study found bees evaluate the quality of nectar relative to their most recent feeding
experience. My team wanted to explore whether scents, colors and patterns might serve as
product labels for bees.We found the bees were more willing to accept the medium-quality
nectar from yellow flowers than they were from blue.Their expectations mattered. In
another experiment, bumblebees chose between two equally attractive flowers with
different sugar concentrations. Then a third flower with lower sugar concentration or
slower refill rate was added to expand the choice. The presence of the new low-reward flower
made the medium-quality one appear relatively better.
Honeybees and bumblebees are used commercially to support billions of dollars of
crop production annually. If bees visit certain flowers more in the presence of other
flowers, farmers could use this tendency strategically.Just as stores stock shelves to
present unattractive options alongside attractive ones, farmers could plant certain flower
species in or near crop plants to increase visitation to the target crops.

Artificial intelligence is often associated with digital deception ()but a team of
researchers are trying to turn the tables by using AI to fight against climate misinformation.
Their strategy started with the development of an AI model that can track large
volumes of false or misleading climate claims on social media. To teach the AI model how
to do that, the researchers went straight to some of the biggest collection of climate
misinformation."The data that we originally trained it with came from climate denial
blogs and conservative think tanks, said John Cook."We're ultimately trying to detect
and review misinformation in real time.
For decades, fossil fuel interests and conservative groups have worked to sow public
confusion around climate science by using false, misleading research.Recently,AI has
been employed to flood the Internet with deceptive claims.Fake news websites that use AI
to create articles grew more than 10 times.Climate misinformation specifically has
increased in part because social media giants have weakened safeguards against
misinformation.Fact-checking systems on some sites are rarely used to counter climate
disinformation and human fact-checkers can't keep up.
The AI model being developed by Cook, known as CARDS,could be used to counter
false climate claims in real time and at scale, detecting climate misinformation roughly 90
percent of the time.Still,that's not good enough."You don't want a self-driving car that's
90 percent accurate,he said.
Researcher Imran Ahmed said,"Many people have moved on from rejecting climate
change to accepting climate change but saying that there is no hope, the solutions don't
work,and,besides,the scientists don't really understand it."To Ahmed,this shift
permits more criticism about climate change denial than other misinformation
movements."They didn't care about the science of climate change. They just cared about
stopping action on climate change.I'd love to see them adopt CaRDS as a way of
identifying climate denial descriptions,"said Ahmed.
32.How did researchers train their AI model?
A.Collecting data from social media.
B.Building big think tanks for the model.
C.Using data from climate denial sources
D.Employing a real-time fact-checking method.
33.What is implied in the third paragraph?
A.The effectiveness of user-driven fact-checking.
B.The need for more technological advancements.
C.The application of Al on social media platforms.
D.The urgency of addressing climate misinformation issue.

The pace of change is speeding across nearly every aspect of society-technology,
culture, economics, and even how we think about ourselves. In this rapidly developing
landscape, learning new skills and acquiring knowledge are crucial.36 It is equally
essential because it involves letting go of outdated or incorrect beliefs, habits, and
knowledge in favor of more accurate, useful,or relevant information.
Consider how quickly technology has transformed over the past few decades. In the
early 2000s,few could have predicted the rise of smartphones, cloud computing, and
social media. The importance of unlearning lies not just in letting go of what we no longer
need but in being able to relearn and adapt to the ever-changing world around us.37
As we advance into the digital age,the speed of change shows no signs of slowing. In
such a world, holding onto outdated knowledge and habits can delay personal and
professional growth. In fields like artificial intelligence, automation, and data science, the
methods and tools are evolving so rapidly that what was cutting-edge five years ago may
be outdated today.Holding onto outdated knowledge can prevent progress in such
dynamic environments.38 For example,conversations around inclusivity,diversity,
and mental health have developed significantly.
Unlearning outdated prejudices is essential for individuals and societies to remain
adaptable and inclusive.Climate concerns, and political instability require novel solutions
and fresh thinking. The problems we face today cannot be solved with the attitude or tools
of the past.39 It helps develop innovative solutions for complex global challenges. At
an individual level, unlearning enables us to challenge our self-limiting beliefs about our
capabilities.
40 Actually,it's a necessity.As we progress in this century,those who master
the art of unlearning will be better equipped to innovate, grow, and succeed in a complex,
rapidly changing world. The illiterate()of the 21st century will not be those who
cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.
A.It is about challenging personal beliefs.
B.However,unlearning is often overlooked.
C.Social values and beliefs are also changing.
D.This makes more room for new knowledge.
E.The ability to unlearn is no longer a luxury.
F.So unlearning is about updating not removing.
G.Unlearning rigid ways of thinking is necessary.

On a cool autumn morning, the small town of Willow Creek cheered with
excitement. The annual Mini Marathon was about to begin, and the streets were lined
with enthusiastic audience.Among the crowd,a father and his young son,Alex, stood
ready at the starting line. For months,Alex had been training diligently, dreaming of
winning the race and bringing home the trophy().
Alex's father,Mark, had always supported his son's passion for running. He had run
marathons himself in his younger days and was proud to see his son follow in his
footsteps. As the race officials gave the final instructions,Mark placed a reassuring hand
on Alex's shoulder."Remember,it's not just about winning,"he said."It's about giving
your best and enjoying the journey.
The starting gun fired, and the runners took off.Alex rushed ahead, his legs moving
swiftly and his heart pounding with determination.Mark followed closely behind, keeping
an eye on his son.The first few kilometers flew by,and Alex maintained a steady pace,
feeling confident and strong.
As they approached the halfway mark,Alex noticed a disturbance on the side of the
road.A small crowd had gathered around something on the ground.Curiosity sparked,
Alex slowed down and saw a tiny, injured squirrel lying in the grass. Its leg was twisted at
an odd angle, and it was obviously in pain.Without hesitation,Alex stopped and knelt
beside the animal.
Mark, who had been a few steps behind, quickly joined his son."What's going on?"
he asked,concerned.
"It's an injured squirrel,"Alex replied,his voice filled with sympathy."I can't just
leave it alone.”
Mark looked at his son, torn between the race and the animal."Do you want to help
it?”he asked gently..
Alex nodded, his eyes determined."Yes,I do.It's the right thing to do.
