As night fell,I knew I should go to bed.Instead,I opened my laptop to revisit a
research problem. If I could just make a little headway before bed,I was sure I would
sleep better and awake ready to resolve all other tasks-lectures to polish, emails to send.
But my work was fruitless, and by the time I gave up,I had only 3 hours to sleep.
I had been stuck in the same pattern since graduating school, working whenever
possible and filling the rest of my time with reflection about work.Things were getting
worse in my new role-a new assistant professor, though.I knew the potential cost of
continuing this way,but I didn't know how to change.
I started to think about a lesson I had learned.Back then,I ate constantly and
became very fat.Change seemed out of reach until I happened to go a few nights without
eating anything.I was surprised at how good this made me feel physically and mentally.
It seemed like a sustainable habit,so I decided to make it a part of my routine.
I was 3 years into after-dinner fasting()at that time.It occurred to me that
there might be a similarity between my current pattern of ceaseless work and my earlier
pattern of ceaseless eating,so I decided to establish a scheduled reset for work as well.
Every Saturday night through Monday morning,I would shut off all email notifications
(通知)to my phone and keep my laptop shut,
Almost instantly,my Saturday night habit of disabling email notifications became a
weekly highlight. On Mondays,I found myself returning to the office with a sense of
refreshment. The quality of my work improved during the day, giving me freedom to
decide whether I wanted to continue with anything in the evening.
My fasting experiences have taught me that rest is far more important than I ever
thought. My body and mind need rest from food and work in much the same way as they
need sleep.

A backyard regular caught Trish O'Kane's eye while she was living with a friend in
New Orleans, five months after Hurricane Katrina hit the region and her house in August
2005.Hearing the bird calls was an initial step toward over 1960 hours of birding,33 field
notebooks. In her book,Birding to Change the World,O'Kane charts her
transformation from human rights journalist to environmentalist.
"How to stop war and how to end economic injustice-these global problems were
the focus of my life and work,"O'Kane writes."I never paid any attention to
environmental issues.
Her interest in birds actually began a few days before the storm arrived.O'Kane
notes how, despite the fine weather, alarmed gulls shrieked (near Lake Pontchartrain.
"This was the first time I began to think of them as more than pretty flying objects and
instead as creatures with their own agendas,"she writes."But they can't watch weather
forecast,so how could they possibly know that a hurricane is going to hit us in less than
forty--eight hours?”
Post-Katrina,O'Kane must navigate between working at Loyola and coping with the
loss of her home. She finds relief in watching the birds that fly about in New Orleans'
Audubon Park.
"My students stare at me in disbelief when I tell them that until I was forty-five years
old,I never cared about birds,"O'Kane writes."I suddenly wondered how many creatures
had died simply because of the way I lived."She decides to pursue an eco-oriented career. In
2007,she enrolls in a doctorate program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to study
environmental science.
Most of the book focuses on O'Kane's efforts to preserve Warner Park. She
successfully campaigns to stop the construction of a parking lot in one of the park's
meadows().Her activism snowballs into Wild Warner,a local crew of wildlife
watchers flocking together to defend the park from further development. At its core,
Birding to Change the World is about how people and birds today depend on one another.

Robots are supposed to do boring or unpleasant jobs for us.However, some tasks
such as cleaning the bathroom are challenging for them. How is it possible to calculate the
movement of a robot arm so that it can reach every part of a washbasin? What if the basin
has unusually irregular edges? How much force should be applied at which point?
It would be highly time-consuming to precisely encode()all these things in fixed
rules.A different approach has been taken at TU Wien:a human uses a sponge()
fitted with force sensors and tracking markers to clean the edge of a sink. Then from a
few demonstrations,a huge amount of data is generated and processed.By watching the
human, the robot learns how cleaning works and can flexibly apply this knowledge to
differently shaped objects.
This innovative learning method enables the robot to clean the entire sink or other
objects with a complex surface after the training, even though it has only been shown how
to clean a single edge of the sink.
"The robot learns that you have to hold the sponge differently depending on the shape
of the surface, that you have to apply a different amount of force on a tightly curved area
than on a flat surface,"explain Christoph Unger from the Industrial Robotics group.
In the future, the robot could be placed on a mobile platform to be used as a useful
helper anywhere in a workshop.Such robots could not only learn but also exchange ideas
and teach other robots what they know."Let's imagine many workshops use these self-
learning robots to sand or paint surfaces. Then, you could let the robots gain experience
individually with local data,"says Andreas Kugi.
Many tests have proven the sink-cleaning robot's flexibility. The technology has been
already causing a blockbuster internationally:At IROS 2024,a conference with over 3500
submitted scientific papers,TU Wien's work was awarded the 'Best Application Paper
Award'and thus voted one of the top innovations of the year.

Preparing for college can be a difficult task, but starting early can make it smoother
and less stressful. Here are some effective ways high school juniors can get a head start
on their college journey.
16 Academics are the cornerstone of college preparation.High school juniors
should put their grades first and take challenging courses that will strengthen their college
applications.
Make preparations for exams.17 Juniors should start studying well in advance,
using resources such as prep books, online courses, and practice tests. Many students
find it beneficial to take these exams in the spring of their junior year, allowing time for
retakes if necessary.
Develop extra-curricular (involvement.18 So Juniors should not only
pay attention to their grades but also engage in extra-curricular activities. They should
focus on a few key activities that they are passionate about, whether it's sports, clubs,or
part-time jobs.Leadership roles and commitment in these activities are particularly
impressive to admissions committees.
Take care of mental and physical health.Preparing for college can be stressful,so
it's important for juniors to take care of their mental and physical health.19
Additionally, practicing stress-relief techniques can help manage anxiety.
Research colleges.Juniors should begin researching colleges to understand what each
institution offers and to identify which schools are fit for their goals and interests.Factors
to consider include location, size, academic programs, campus culture, and financial aid
options.20

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At night,I think about my mother and hope she's asleep. She lives alone in the little
town of Golden,Colorado,in a house high up on a hill.I'm out in L.A.,so there's not
much I can do-except worry.She won't move here,and I can't visit her as often as I'd
like. But I know she would turn to the police for help if necessary.
I called a little while ago.She said it had been snowing all day,and her nose was
running non-stop.I kept thinking of her, sick and alone in that empty house.I had this
little fantasy about how,if I lived there,I'd run out to get her some chicken noodle soup.
Then I came up with a great idea.
I remember there was a little Chinese restaurant in the town.So I dialed Information
and asked the operator to search the Golden listings for Chinese restaurants. But the
operator told me he needed an actual name.I kept that operator on the line, inventing
dozens of listings for him to check. It's incredible that the operator didn't disconnect me.
I finally hit on the right name:Golden Peach.
I went ahead and paid the extra charge for the operator to connect me,and I ordered
the soup, plus egg rolls and stir-fried vegetables. It was an entire Chinese banquet()
for one tiny lady. With the snow piling up,I figured she could use the leftovers, plus at
that point I guess I was sort of hungry myself.I charged the whole order to my credit
card, including a tip to the delivery guy. Then I just sat back, feeling pleased with
myself, and waited for my phone to ring.
I glanced at my watch.I worried Mom might have fallen asleep. But I didn't think
the delivery guy's arrival would scare this little old lady.I only thought about how
surprised my mom was going to be.I wished I could see the look on her face.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Sure enough, about half an hour later,my phone rang but it was a strange number.
When I got through,my mother sounded frightened telling me someone was knocking at
her door.
