Jennifer Hodges is a third grade teacher. She says her students don’t just sit at desks every day. They do a lot of practical learning, such as raising coho salmon (银鲑) and then putting them into a lake. It’s through a program called Salmon in the Classroom, founded by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Coho salmon lay eggs in the fall, when many schools start. The eggs remain in the classroom about six months before they are put into lakes. After that, they live for two to four years before they lay eggs and then die shortly afterwards. Though many of her students often see salmon in their backyard, few are familiar with them. Hodges says, “With this project, they have a whole different perspective because they know what it takes to actually go through the stages of a salmon.”
Learning about climate change is more crucial now than ever. In 2022 the Arctic had its sixth-warmest year on record. But these lessons are made concrete to them in raising salmon, which require cold water to survive.
During the months when the salmon are in the classroom, students like to sit by the tank to observe, and calculate when the salmon will turn from eggs to fry (鱼苗) based on the temperature of the tank. To them, it’s not practicing math problems; it’s predicting the future.
Since Hodges and her students live in such a rural area, there aren’t many field trips. But each year in May, she takes her students on the Salmon Field Trip, where they get to release the salmon they’ve raised in class, which is an educational event. This trip is designed to teach students about the living of salmon and the importance of environmental conservation.
“The best part is getting to say goodbye. We release the salmon after watching them hatch from eggs and grow into fry while taking care of them,” says a boy, Fisher. “I can’t be too excited at that moment.”
24. What do we know about the program according to the first two paragraphs?
A. It is well received by teachers. B. It is created by Jennifer Hodges.
C. It aims to teach the salmon life cycle. D. It helps the development of salmon.
25. What is the students’ attitude to raising salmon?
A. Interested and curious. B. Determined and passionate.
C. Indifferent and bored. D. Negative and disappointed.
26. Why does Hodges take her students on the Trip?
A. To learn to survive in rural areas. B. To catch little salmon in fields.
C. To see the endangered salmon. D. To learn to protect ecosystem.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Learning about Salmon in a Practical Way.
B. Learning to Predict the Future Climate Change.
C. Working with Teachers to Protect the Environment.
D. Practicing Dealing with some Difficult Math Problems.

There’s a song in your head. You keep hearing it repeatedly. You can’t make it stop, and it’s driving you crazy! Has this happened to you? Maybe you have suffered from an earworm, which is a memory of a song.
Earworms are common. A study showed that 90 percent of people experience them. Why do we get earworms? According to neurologist Oliver Sacks, music affects us whether we pay attention to it or not. We’re surrounded by music all the time in our everyday lives. Sacks wonders if there is a higher incidence (发生率) of earworms today because of all this music in our environment.
Research on the primary auditory cortex (听觉皮层) supports Sacks’ ideas. The auditory cortex is the part of the brain that processes sound. It’s a short-term storage system for small amounts of auditory information. Some of this auditory information is forgotten, and some of it goes into long-term memory. However, songs appear to stay in the auditory cortex for a long time.
James Kellaris, a professor of marketing at the University of Cincinnati, thinks that only certain types of songs become earworms. These songs are repetitive, simple, and incongruous (不协调的) — something unexpected such as uneven rhythm. Your brain pays a lot of attention to a song like this, Kellaris says. Because it is repetitive and unusual, it stays longer in the auditory cortex. At that point, Kellaris believes, it becomes an annoying earworm.
Advertisers often use jingles — short songs that are easy to remember to promote sales. Advertisers want jingles to stick in people’s minds to keep them thinking about their products. It seems that advertisers have learned what Kellaris has found out in his research.
Is there any way to get rid of an earworm? Here are some tips Kellaris collected: replace the earworm song with another song, try to distract yourself by doing an intense activity such as exercising, or tell someone about your earworm. What if none of these strategies work? Then perhaps you should just sit back and try to enjoy the music in your head!
28. How does the author lead to the topic?
A. By giving a definition. B. By clarifying a question.
C. By drawing a conclusion. D. By describing a phenomenon.
29. What might contribute to the higher incidence of earworms today?
A. People having better memories. B. The decrease in the quality of music.
C. The large amount of music around us. D. People listening to music more carefully.
30. Why does the author mention auditory cortex?
A. To explain the workings of earworms. B. To prove the significance of music.
C. To emphasize the necessity of the research. D. To introduce the effect of memory.
31. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Earworms come and go in a flash.
B. Jingles have nothing to do with earworms.
C. Earworms are welcomed by music lovers.
D. Enjoying the earworms might be the last choice.

Mentally replaying a memory can be helpful for recalling key details such as picturing the moment you last arrived home to remember where you put your keys. This ability is what psychologists call “mental time travel”. Episodic memory, which is a form of long-term memory for events, is an example of mental time travel. While scientists once thought it was unique to humans, evidence of such memory has been found in animals, such as great apes and mice. Scientists have recently found birds called Eurasian Jays can do it, too.
Eurasian Jays have excellent memory: they stash foods such as nuts and larvae (幼虫) for future consumption, so remembering the place, contents and time is crucial for their survival. They also have complex mental abilities such as object permanence and spatial memory. This made researchers curious to know whether Eurasian Jays might revisit memories like we do.
In the experiment, seven birds watched experimenters place food beneath one cup in a line of identical cups. They were rewarded for later picking the correct cup. This training was repeated multiple times so that the birds could remember the correct cup’s position.
Then the birds were given a different memory assessment in which they saw food placed beneath one of several cups with differently colored shapes or patterns. Ten minutes later, they were brought back to these non-identical cups in a different order. If the bird only remembered what it was trained to recall, it would have been fooled by this switch-up. “But instead, the birds were largely able to access visual details that they hadn’t known they would need,” says James Davies, the lead author of the study. The jays correctly chose the cup with the food 70% of the time based on those visual features. This experiment was a powerful indicator of something like episodic memory because the jays didn’t know colors and patterns would be important when they first saw them.
Next, the researchers hope to get a clearer picture of the jays’ memory abilities by testing their limits. Human episodic memory is quite flexible — it can apply to situations that don’t have to do with food or survival — so the researchers suggest exploring whether Eurasian Jays’ memory abilities are sharp in non-food-related situations as well.
32. What is a feature of “mental time travel”?
A. It benefits temporary memory. B. It’s different from episodic memory.
C. It’s common in the animal kingdom. D. It enables mental scene reconstruction.
33. What does the underlined word “stash” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Digest. B. Share. C. Store. D. Consume.
34. What can be inferred from two experiments about Eurasian Jays?
A. They show flexible memory beyond training.
B. They are a good master of color and patterns.
C. They choose correctly based on initial memory.
D. They rely on their spatial memory to find food.
35. What do researchers want to explore in future studies?
A. Jays’ specific food preferences. B. Jay’s survival skills in the wild.
C. Jays’ social behavior and memory. D. Jays’ memory ability in non-food contexts.

In a new school filled with unfamiliar faces. Charlie felt like a fish out of water. The lively chatter of students around him only fueled his loneliness. Every day, he walked through the hallways feeling invisible and trapped in uncertainty. To escape this loneliness, Charlie turned to video games, where he became a hero battling monsters and saving kingdoms. In this digital world, he felt powerful and important, unlike his quiet life at school.
Ms. Rita, his literature teacher, noticed the quiet boy at the back of the classroom, often lost in his thoughts. She had a gift for connecting with her students, always offering kind words or warm smiles. Although she encouraged Charlie to share his feelings, he hid his struggles, preferring the company of imaginary friends in his games, where he found the appreciation that was missing in his real life.
Recently, Charlie became hooked on a new game. One Sunday evening, he immersed himself in its colorful world, ignoring his mother’s reminders to sleep. Excited by his adventures, he remained awake, thinking about strategies, which left him anxious and tired for school.
The next day, unable to resist the temptation(诱惑), Charlie secretly packed his gaming machine in his backpack. In Ms. Rita’s class, his heart raced, not from the lesson on poetry, but from the thought of playing during breaks. While other students engaged in discussions about finding something valuable in life, Charlie’s mind was focused on the game hidden in his bag.
When the discussion opened up, he took the chance to peek at his gaming machine. As he powered it on, the screen flashed with new quests(新任务), and he lost track of his surroundings. Unfortunately, just as he was concentrating, the gaming machine slipped from his hands and crashed to the floor with a loud sound. Silence enveloped the classroom, and all eyes turned towards him, the weight of anxiety and tension heavy in the air.

However, Ms. Rita picked up the fallen gaming machine with her usual warm smile. _________ ___________________________________________________________________________________

My Favorite Book
My favorite book is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is set in the 1920s, a time of great prosperity and excess in America.
The story mainly revolves around Jay Gatsby, a wealthy and mysterious man. Gatsby throws lavish parties in the hope of attracting the attention of his former lover, Daisy Buchanan. However, Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan, and their complex relationships lead to a tragic ending.
I highly recommend this book. For one thing, it provides a vivid picture of the Jazz Age, showing the hollowness beneath the glittering surface of that era. For another, the themes of love, wealth, and the American Dream are explored in a profound way, which will undoubtedly help readers gain a deep insight into the true meaning of happiness and success.
Paragraph 1:
However, Ms. Rita picked up the fallen gaming machine with her usual warm smile. Instead of blaming or criticizing Charlie, she playfully joked that he was the first student to uncover something really “valuable” from the poem they had just discussed. She urged the other students to work on their search for valuable things in life, adding that every perspective mattered. Her unexpected joke transformed the moment, and laughter erupted in the classroom, saving Charlie from embarrassment and easing his anxiety. In that instant, his heart began to lighten, feeling warmth instead of shame.
Paragraph 2:
Grateful while guilty, Charlie approached Ms. Rita’s office after school. He expressed his thanks for her forgiveness while admitting to his distraction during class. He recognized the need to balance his passion for gaming and study. Ms. Rita listened attentively, and returned his gaming machine with a smile. She encouraged him to join the school’s e-sports club, suggesting that combining his interest with social involvement help him connect with others. In that moment, Ms. Rita’s forgiveness and understanding melted his heart, inspiring him to embrace both his passion and the journey of building new friendships.

根据第一段中“They do a lot of practical learning, such as raising coho salmon (银鲑) and then putting them into a lake. It’s through a program called Salmon in the Classroom, founded by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. 这是通过一个名为“课堂上的鲑鱼”的项目实现的,该项目由阿拉斯加渔猎局创立)”以及第二段中“Hodges says, “With this project, they have a whole different perspective because they know what it takes to actually go through the stages of a salmon.”
根据第四段中“During the months when the salmon are in the classroom, students like to sit by the tank to observe, and calculate when the salmon will turn from eggs to fry (鱼苗) based on the temperature of the tank. To them, it’s not practicing math problems; it’s predicting the future. 故选A项。

根据第一段“There’s a song in your head. You keep hearing it repeatedly. You can’t make it stop, and it’s driving you crazy! Has this happened to you? Maybe you have suffered from an earworm, which is a memory of a song.(有一首歌在你的脑海里萦绕。
根据第二段中“Sacks wonders if there is a higher incidence (发生率) of earworms today because of all this music in our environment.(Sacks怀疑,由于我们所处环境中存在着这么多的音乐,如今“耳虫”的发生率是否更高了)”可知,可能导致如今“耳虫”发生率较高的是我们周围大量的音乐。
根据第三段“Research on the primary auditory cortex (听觉皮层) supports Sacks’ ideas. The auditory cortex is the part of the brain that processes sound. It’s a short-term storage system for small amounts of auditory information. Some of this auditory information is forgotten, and some of it goes into long-term memory. However, songs appear to stay in the auditory cortex for a long time.(对初级听觉皮层的研究支持了Sacks的观点。 故选A。
根据最后一段“Is there any way to get rid of an earworm? Here are some tips Kellaris collected: replace the earworm song with another song, try to distract yourself by doing an intense activity such as exercising, or tell someone about your earworm. What if none of these strategies work? Then perhaps you should just sit back and try to enjoy the music in your head!(有没有什么办法能摆脱“耳虫”呢?
根据第一段“Mentally replaying a memory can be helpful for recalling key details, such as picturing the moment you last arrived home to remember where you put your keys. This ability is what psychologists call “mental time travel”. Episodic memory, which is a form of long-term memory for events, is an example of mental time travel.(在脑海中回放一段记忆对回忆关键细节很有帮助,比如想象你最后一次回家的那一刻,记住你把钥匙放在哪里了。
根据倒数第二段““But instead, the birds were largely able to access visual details that they hadn’t known they would need,” says James Davies, the lead author of the study. The jays correctly chose the cup with the food 70% of the time based on those visual features. This experiment was a powerful indicator of something like episodic memory because the jays didn’t know colors and patterns would be important when they first saw them.(该研究的主要作者詹姆斯·戴维斯说:“相反,鸟类在很大程度上能够获得它们不知道自己需要的视觉细节。” 故选A。
根据最后一段“Next, the researchers hope to get a clearer picture of the jays’ memory abilities by testing their limits. Human episodic memory is quite flexible — it can apply to situations that don’t have to do with food or survival — so the researchers suggest exploring whether Eurasian Jays’ memory abilities are sharp in non-food-related situations as well.(接下来,研究人员希望通过测试它们的极限来更清楚地了解松鸦的记忆能力。
根据本段主旨句“Be an honest person with them. 根据上文“If there’s no trust, there’s nothing there. E项“So please be honest and they’ll learn to open up to you.
根据上文“Now respect isn’t just simply treating her or him nicely. A项“There’s a lot more to it.
根据上文“Make them feel you are someone they can really count on and build a future with. G项“Your partner has to be able to count on you when needed.
根据本段主旨句“Make sure you have a good sense of humor with them. 根据上文“Laughter is the key to happiness. Laugh a lot with them, joke with them. Laughter may seem silly, but it’s the secret to a lot in life. It will keep the sparks alive. D项“Laughter keeps the relationship strong and lasting.
根据本段主旨句“Make sure the communication is good. C项“Instead of screaming, talk to them.
A. idea 想法;B. plan 计划;C. version 版本、说法;D. habit 习惯。
A. proposal 建议;B. theory 理论、看法;C. worry 担忧;D. secret 秘密。
A. struggle 费力、挣扎;B. desire 渴望;C. choose 选择;D. pretend 假装。分析:“struggle to do sth”是固定搭配,表“费力做某事”,结合后文“yet, at deer camp, I can cut and saw firewood with no problem”的转折可知,作者做“修剪树枝”这件事时状态很差、很费力;其他选项的语义与后文的转折逻辑不符,因此选A。
A. true 真实的;B. familiar 熟悉的;C. typical 典型的;D. similar 相似的。
A. tires 使疲惫;B. confuses 使困惑;C. shocks 使震惊;D. disappoints 使失望。
A. excuse 借口;B. order 命令、订单;C. thought 想法;D. news 消息。
。A. luck 运气;B. laziness 懒惰;C. imagination 想象力;D. motivation 动力。
A. clever 聪明的;B. right 正确的;C. reliable 可靠的;D. helpful 有帮助的。
A. doubted 怀疑;B. claimed 声称;C. remembered 记得;D. pictured 想象、描绘。
A. ran out of 用完、耗尽;B. got rid of 摆脱;C. cut down on 减少;D. gave up on 放弃。
A. fearing 害怕;B. seeking 寻求;C. trying 尝试;D. ignoring 忽视。
A. tips 建议;B. steps 步骤;C. jokes 玩笑;D. rewards 奖励、回报。
A. recipes 食谱;B. dreams 梦想;C. moments 时刻;D. makers 制造者。
根据“a symbol of friendship”可知,动词短语stand as符合题意,意为“作为…… 故填as。
根据“size of a football pitch”可知,固定表达the size of符合题意,意为“…… 故填the。
故填that/which。
故填has obtained。
故填was embraced。
根据“a window for local people”可知,此处用view“观赏”的不定式作后置定语,描述window“窗口”的功能。故填to view。

W: Actually, I don’t want a pet with long hair, like a cat or a dog. I don’t want a pet that could be dangerous, either, like a spider or a snake.
M: How about ants? They are easy to look after. Come here and have a look. You only need to put the ants into a glass box. The box is filled with special soil, so you don’t need to feed them. The most interesting part is that you can watch the ants digging roads in the soil.
W: It sounds good. Do you sell both the ants and the box? M: Yes.
W: How many ants should I get at least?
M: Eight at least. They can live three to six months.
W: Thanks a lot. I will find out more online and come here next week.
M: That’s fine.
M: Look at my new e-book reader.
W: Oh, it’s nice, but I’d never get used to it.
M: You should try it. A lot of people just don’t like progress. I’m sure the first people to see real books said that stories should be told by storytellers and heard by listeners around a fire. Things change.
W: Well, how does it work? Isn’t it like reading a big PDF document on your computer? When I have to do that, my eyes get so tired. I can’t imagine what it would be like to read a Jane Austen novel in that way.
M: No! There isn’t a light on it like a computer has, so it doesn’t tire your eyes.
W: Huh, I never realized that. How do you put books on it?
M: I just buy books for it online and they get delivered straight to the reader.
W: By e-mail?
M: Yeah. It’s very convenient. Listen, I’m going out on business for a few days. I’ll leave this e-book reader with you. It’s got the latest Grist novel on it, the one you wanted to read. See if you get on with it. W: Thanks. I can’t wait to see what it’s like.
W: Hello, everyone. Today, I’ll tell you something about South Orange Town. Located along the Pacific coast in Southern California, the town attracts a few million visitors a year. It is known for its artist community, seaside village atmosphere, and beautiful beaches. Much of the town’s beauty is natural. You can see giant blue whales rise onto the sea surface in summer and fall. In the winter season, you can explore the galleries and cafes along the seaside streets. You can also get close to the local wildlife in the Pacific Ocean Park. This is where injured sea lions that were saved and cared for before being returned to the wild. The small, family-friendly park, which opened in the 1970s, was the first of its kind in California, and entrance is free. Every summer, the town hosts many popular events. The Festival of Arts is one of them, featuring not only the paintings of over 100 local artists, but also live music. Its sister event, the Pageant of the Masters, even provides attractive outdoor guided tours.
