Bergl doesn’t consider himself the next Thomas Edison. He’s just a man who loves animals, Africa and adventure. Yet, Bergl might have invented a tool as great as the light bulb (灯泡) — a tool that uses modern-day technology to solve an almost prehistoric problem.
The tool is called the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART). It is designed to be waterproof (防水的), shockproof and poacher (偷猎者) proof. Bergl worked with the Bronx Zoo and worldwide wildlife groups to develop it in 2011. Since then, it has been seen in more than 55 countries where poachers have forced the best-known but most threatened species to near extinction.
SMART works as a very simple smart phone — it lets the user record observations, like animal sightings, behavioral changes in animals and illegal activities. If a park ranger (管理员) sees something that is very important, that information gets entered, sent to the cloud and sent out to the base camp so they can take action and stop the killing.
Bergl and his workmates travel to African wildlife reserves now and then. They teach park rangers in some of the most remote countries how to use SMART. “SMART makes collection of information easier. It allows us to focus on the things that really matter, according to what the information is telling us,” said Kim Young, director of the Panthera cheetah program at Etosha National Park in Namibia. “Thanks to SMART, most of Africa’s endangered species seem to be coming back.”
Bergl never plans to make money from his small but great invention. SMART is free and doesn’t even have a patent (专利).
4. What can we learn about SMART?
A. It looks like a light bulb. B. It is used to prevent poaching.
C. It was invented by Bergl alone. D. It can help deal with water problems.
5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Why SMART got popular. B. What SMART is like.
C. How SMART works. D. How SMART was created.
6. What does Kim Young think of SMART?
A. It is easy to hold. B. It will be used widely.
C. It doesn’t cost much. D. It is very helpful.
7. Which of the following can best describe Bergl?
A. He dislikes taking risks in life. B. He’s a creative and giving person.
C. He’s determined to succeed in life. D. He never wants to depend on others.

There’s no denying that learning a foreign language is difficult, and when it comes to speaking the language, it can be extremely tough. I remember walking into my first-ever Spanish class at university only to discover that half of my classmates were already fluent in multiple languages. It’s safe to say I felt out of my depth!
At first the thought of speaking Spanish terrified me; not only were my vocabulary and grammar very limited, but I had never spoken another language before. However, I was determined to overcome my fear, and by adopting a few simple methods I have been able to build my confidence and make progress. In fact, it was not as terrible as I thought. Here, I think I will share a few tips with you.
Firstly, it is OK to make mistakes for language learners and that you should accept them. This sounds obvious, but when it comes to language learning we often aim for perfection and feel as though we are not ready to speak until we have "enough" words or grammatical knowledge. The truth is you will never feel ready, and instead it is important to use the knowledge to communicate what you can.
This leads on to my next tip: don’t compare yourself to others. This can be a hard one, especially if you are in a large language class. It is important to remember that we all learn at different speeds and through different styles of learning. Something that really helped me progress was finding a patient language exchange partner. Finding someone whose level of English was similar to my level of Spanish to practice with made me feel much more confident.
Lastly, celebrate the small success and remember how far you have come! Instead of focusing on how far you have to go, focus on the progress you have already made and be proud of your achievements!
8.What does the underlined part suggest in the passage?
A.The author took great pride in his classmates.
B.The author wanted to leave university immediately.
C.The author was unable to speak many languages.
D.The author failed to join in his classmates’ conversation.
9.What is the common barrier for language learners?
A.They fail to have a good command of grammar.
B.They have a lack of courage to speak the language
C.They can’t use the language in right situations.
D.They can’t help comparing themselves to others.
10.What’s the best way to learn Spanish in the author’s opinion?
A.Choose a language exchange partner at the same level.
B.Set long-term goals to improve enthusiasm.
C.Learn from an example and pick out weak points.
D.Find a partner whose Spanish is excellent.
11.What does the author want to tell in the passage?
A.Mastering Spanish is a chance in a million.
B.Learning new languages is not so hard.
C.Confidence is the key to speaking a language.
D.Don’t ignore what you have achieved in learning.
D
The British are known for their sense of humour. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The reason is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, “It’ a little damp (潮湿的) outside.” Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, “She isn’t exactly friendly.” Understatement is often used in an unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.
Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to their everyday life when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What’s more, the British love to watch comedies (喜剧) about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedy series Mr. Bean is a good example of this kind of humour.
Mr Bean doesn’t talk often, and instead he uses his body movements and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr. Bean is popular in many countries around the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humour.
12.Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?
A.The British often enlarge the fact.
B.The British usually use understatement.
C.British jokes are not as funny as jokes in other countries.
D.British jokes are connected with many different cultures.
13.The author explains understatement by ________.
A.describing a process B.making comparisons
C.following the time order D.using examples
14.Mr Bean makes people laugh by ________.
A.telling funny stories
B.making jokes about others’ accent
C.copying how others behave
D.using his body movements and facial expressions
15.What can be the best title for the text?
A.British humour in comedy
B.Humour in different cultures
C.Understanding British humour
D.Developing your sense of humour

Bees ( 蜜蜂) touch our lives in ways we may not realize. They are responsible for as much as one third of the food that we eat, and even play a role in growing the cotton (棉花) used in much of our clothing. 16 Here’s how you can help:
1. Plant more flowers
Bees depend on garden flowers to ensure they have different kinds of diet. By planting flowers in your garden you can create a pleasant place for bees. 17 Another idea is to add hanging baskets of flowers next to your front door.
2. Find a space for a beehive (蜂窝) in your garden
Many would-be beekeepers find it difficult to find a safe space for their bees. If you have some space, contact your local beekeeping organization. 18 You will be surprised what a difference a beehive will make to your garden.
3. Give bees water
19 They use water to produce food for their bee families and control the temperature in their hives. Bees look for a clean source of water. Leave out containers filled with clean water in your outdoor spaces and refresh them often.
4. Be bee friendly
Bees are good neighbors, and only sting (蜇) when they feel threatened. Beekeepers wear protective clothing when they are dealing with bees. If a bee flies in front of you when unprotected, do not flap (拍打) your hands. 20 The bee will soon lose interest.
A. Stay calm and move slowly away.
B. Fight the diseases that affect bees.
C. One way to help bees is to buy local produce.
D. They could find a beekeeper in need of a site.
E. But more than one quarter of the species is facing extinction.
