After the hurricane the power supply in our block was unstable, and the stores were empty. My neighbour Tanesha built a small booth (棚子) in her yard so people could leave each other messages inside. One day, she said,“Most of the block is using this booth, but not everyone. We should check on people, don’t you think?” She was right. Then, we made a list of the houses on the block. “You do the east side and I’ll do the west side,” Tanesha said.“Okay,” I said. Then, I walked down to the corner to start.

The people with the generator were at mid-block. Most of us didn’t have generators — we just charged up what we could during the hours we had power. This house’s generator ran during every power failure.

I walked up the steps and knocked on the door. An old man opened it.“I’m Alexis,”I said.“I’m just checking in with everyone to see if they’ re okay. If you need anything, please let me know.”

“Can you wait — no, just come in,” he said.

“Clifford?”I heard a woman call.“Is someone here? Who is it?”

I followed him into the living room. Then, I saw an elderly woman sitting on a chair. She didn’t look well.“This is Alexis, Susan,” Clifford told her.“Maybe she can help us.”

It turned out that Susan was very ill and she needed additional oxygen, so they ran an oxygen concentrator to turn room air into pure oxygen. The concentrator couldn’t run without power; that was why they fired up the generator every time the power went out. However, they were running out of propane (丙烷), a fuel for the generator.
